I've always had a weird fear of my nails getting ripped off and thought acrylics would make me feel more protected, like nail armor you know? Exact opposite. I've never felt more uncomfortable and paranoid about my nails than the one time I had acrylics on them.
I live through people who do nail art though. Nail art gulls, please be all the cute I cannot.

What search terms are best for all the nail decorations? Nail glitter? Nail gems?

Anyone have any recommendations for stained nails, i've tried whitening toothpaste which was slightly effective, but I'd rather something cheaper.

Anyone do their own acrylics? I was watching some youtube videos and reading some tutorials, and it looks pretty fun, but maybe challenging. I'm thinking of getting some starter shit of amazon once I get paid for my next commission. I like doing resin casting and was thinking I'd probably be able to throw some tiny pieces in there while it's still wet, is that how that works?
>obligatory snoop

>the salon where I live quoted me $600 for a set.
Yeah most stateside salons are gonna way overcharge for it because its going to take them for-fucking-ever since they've probably never done it before. The only times I've ever done any sculpted decos on nails as a professional has been on my own or on my friends, who are also in the industry. Its not exactly taught in cosmetology school.
>>
>>8948905
Be really really careful buying off Amazon. Look for reviews that mention them being actual nail techs and using the stuff professionally. A lot of the powders on there are absolute shit and can even burn your skin.

>I like doing resin casting and was thinking I'd probably be able to throw some tiny pieces in there while it's still wet, is that how that works?
Kind of but not really? Its not like its a mixed slower curing liquid that you can push things into or stir stuff in. Its polymer powder that you dip a brush thats been dampened with liquid monomer into to pick up a small amount and brush on. If your powder gets too wet it just oozes everywhere and you cant shape it, and you cant premix it because it hardens so quickly. It also tends to be harder to get perfectly clear because of the powder aspect and all the buffing that needs to be done to make it smooth. That said, I have siphoned off a small amount of the powder and mixed glitter into it which gives somewhat the effect of >>8942679 and >>8942686. Though I think the second one is more likely building gel/hard gel because of its clarity and smoothness. Building gel is definitely way easier to embed with because its much more clear, is already liquid, and reacts similarly to resin as far as being able to brush it over decals or other decorations to embed them inside. It is an investment to get the supplies for though.

Thanks for the info, anon!
So for sets like >>8948647, you would sculp those before hand of the same material? Or of something else?
I'm obviously not planning on this anytime soon, but I'm just curious.

Depends. For that set, it looks like the characters, the macarons, and the centers of the candies were made separately on a gently curved surface (like maybe a bit of wax paper draped over something) and then certain details were sculpted on once they were in place, like the wrapper edges of the candies and maybe the bows on the lamb(?) character. Though, honestly I don't much like how they seem to have brought their acrylic/gel over the edges of everything to smooth it. I understand its probably sturdier and more practical, but it looks messy and I think it would be too heavy. I wonder if these are competition nails or actual customer nails.

Honest seagull to seagull here, don't attempt that, at least not before you've even tried acrylic at all before. If you're really serious:
>get some plastic practice fingers for beauty students (theyre cheap and kind of hilarious to have anyway) and a big pack of cheap glue on tips and practice doing the actual base nail first
>start with practicing shorter nails and once you have them down pat graduate to longer ones
>use tips when you first start on yourself too, don't try to use the little forms. trust me, i did my time in school and in a salon and i'm STILL shit at doing my own acrylics with my non-dominant hand
>a piece of wax paper or a bit of laminated paper is great for practicing sculpting decorations
>if you wanna cheat, that silly Mod Podge deco whip mold has some great little cute shit in it that you can carefully fill with over-wetted acrylic powder and then attach to your nail when cured, or if you're making press on nails you can actually stick the nail directly to it as its in mold. the one I have has some cute sweets and a hello kitty knockoff rabbit
>stuff like >>8948638 will be much easier for you to start with than something with so many parts like >>8948647

Gonna see if I have some acrylic tutorials too.

Shit I think these are my only acrylic tutorials. I'll see if I can find my old classbook thing later tonight and scan it for you. We had this laminated paper thing that had different size dots and different shapes that you're meant to match with your brush.
>>
>>8949957
Thank you so much, anon, you are so wonderful. I definitely will be starting with the super basic look, but I really appreciate the insight on the kawaii clusterfuck look too, since that's my ultimate goal.
Last question: most tutorials I've seen say to use a clear coat to bring the clarity out at the end/smooth over the sanding. Do you have a preferred brand? Do you even do this?

A place nearer where I live had 3D sculpts on display.. I can't remember the price now, but it was A LOT cheaper than that.. but they have since closed/ moved/ vanished off of the face of the planet unfortunately..

but $600.. at most would take them 5 - 6 hours.. theyre charging $100 an hour.. and I know for a fact the cost of product is no where near that price.. I mean, I understand there is skill and time required.. but $600!?!? For $200 I would have considered.. just kinda bummed me out it had to be so expensive..

Though I did get a quote back from a place in Toyko who would do it for $200! So maybe Ill have fancy nails to share in upcoming threads after all!
>>
how do u guys get ur press ons to fit? I can never find ones that fit right.
>>
>>8949995
Clearcoat I use at work is Out The Door, its nicely glossy and dries quickly. And yeah you always clearcoat over acrylic, even if its a matte topcoat. The buffed finish is never gonna be 100% perfect and the topcoat helps give it a final smoothing and get rid of the whitish opaqueness.

>>8950311
Maybe it depends on area because out here, I think they'd way overcharge because one, the average person here is well off, and two, literally no salons here do that even though this is a large well known city. They'll charge you extra because they're not covering material or time costs, they're kind of charging because its a strange request for them and puts them way out of their comfort zone.

I mean, I used to do hair, and if someone came in with a really out there idea (like that new multicolored rainbow cat undercut thing) I'd charge extra just because its something I'd never consider doing and will probably have to go much more slowly and concentrate much harder on, and there's a hell of a lot more risk if I fuck up.
>>
>>8950396
You're supposed to file them to fit.
>>
I recently got a LED lamp and gel varnish to do at home. I got some gems and things like that and was wondering what the best way to stick them on is? Do you just put them in the wet gel before curing it and then it stays on when its cured, or is it best to use glue (if glue do you have any recommendations)?
>>
>>8952212
Most gels will be slightly sticky to the touch after curing, so what I do is place the gem on the final color coat and then liberally go over it with the topcoat and seal it in. You'll want to 'float' the brush over it or even apply a drop of topcoat directly on the gem, let it settle a bit before curing.
>>
Noob question, but I only recently started to get acrylic nail sets done and stiletto nail extensions, but I'm always afraid of them getting busted or coming off.

Does anyone here grow out their nails for their gels/art VS risking an acrylic nail eventually falling off?
