Only reason I said she's not the best example to recommend is that most people don't get the surgery anon mentioned, and don't look this gorgeous in their fifties, so using her as an example is a bit like saying everyone can wear AP sack dresses because the GLB models pull them off fabulously. There's certainly nothing to stop anyone from wearing the sack dresses or dressing sweet lolita in their fifties, and if it makes them happy then let them do it. It's just a little unrealistic though, with Arika's looks you might as well compare the 70-year-old grandma to a thirty-year-old who can pull off many different looks.

In terms of lolita fashion history in the west she is very relevant. From about 2002-2005 along with Mistress M, she was arguably one of best known lolitas and it's not an exaggeration to say that they were 'lolita idols' of sorts. M and Roren were both in glorious Nippon as a fully-formed version of lolita fashion was really starting to take hold. They both regularly posted images and provided western communities with information about the fashion and helped it to spread. Of course they didn't do this single handedly and there were other factors at play, but their place in the lolita fashion time line is still quite significant.
M (and I think roren as well but can't confirm) used to post on http://blueperiod.suddenlaunch.com/ as early as 2002, which at the time was one of the only principal arenas for discussing lolita fashion in the west. After a while many lolitas moved to egl on livejournal instead, or posted to both egl and blueperiod but activity on the blueperiod forums dropped off massively by about 2004. I'm amazed it's still going actually, makes me wonder if any early lolitas have still kept posting on there.
Egl on livejournal slightly pre-dates the blueperiod forums by about a month, but as far as I remember it, in the very early stages blueperiod was initially more popular although that window didn't last for long.
