WonderCon is like next week people! The poor person's SD Comic Con. Who's getting their stuff together and who's in panic mode?
>>
This thread just reminded me of all the things I still need to finish.
Full blown panic mode!
>>
Room. Check.
Badge. Check.
Guilt Free Spending Money. Check.
Days Off All Weekend with Zero Chance of getting called in? Cheeeeeeeeeck.
Cosplay? ...FUCK. I knew I forgot something. Maybe next year. That's what I said last year.

>Saturday badges are sold out

Oh, ok then.
>>
Still waiting on things to come in the mail but other than that and packing I should be okay.

Anyone else flying from out of state? I'm coming from the Midwest and it's my first con on the West Coast.
>>
>>8906989
Same as last year
If you didn't buy early it's your own fault
>>
Cucka
>>
>>8906997
WC is a good first west coast con to go to I think. It's like OP said, it really is just a smaller Comic Con. BUT it's moving downtown instead of Anaham. Which is fine, it's got too big for the other place. Now it's in the same place as Anime Expo, and that's great for the elbow room. Lucky for me it's only a ten minute drive and I'll be Ubering it so to avoid the 40 dollar parking...JESUS.
>>
Ugh, there's going to be a Lakers game on Friday night. That's going to be a nightmare to deal with.

By the way, Uber has a discount for people who sign up for an account with the code "LACCUBLOG". Your first ride is free (up to $20) so you don't have to deal with parking.
>>
>>8907541
>Ugh, there's going to be a Lakers game on Friday night

Well that's going to be literally impossible to come and go for at least the rest of the night. Hope people have rooms. Make friends with those who do!

I wasn't going to go, but my friend somehow got an extra weekend badge, so I'm like SCORE. And then I just found out Ancient Magus Bride is getting an anime. I betcha I can make a really nice skull headpiece and cosplay Elias since I already have a very fancy suite/dress shoes and I'm 6 feet. 2016. My time has come.
>>
How ded does it get on Sundays?
>>
>>8907581

Not at all. It only gets dead once everything starts to shut down. Panels are a little slim for the pickings at this point, but it's also a great day to go catch up on the AMV or viewing rooms, which are always packed cause people are chillin.
>>
>>8907573
>Well that's going to be literally impossible to come and go for at least the rest of the night. Hope people have rooms.
Game starts at 7:30; if I'm scooting out of the LACC by 5:30 should I be okay or should I aim for earlier?
>>
>>8908083
Game STARTS at 7:30? That means the place will be packed for pre-game stuff/family and friends getting dinner at all the places around. IE Hooters, and Jay's and the parking madness will be on it's way. But I think 5:30 is early enough. Don't think at 6 or beyond you'll have luck though.
>>
>>8907520
I'm not sure how close the hotel is that my friend has for us, but I may consider telling him about Uber to save some cash since he's local.
>>
I haven't cosplayed at all for a couple of years now but I'm kicking around the idea of pulling out one of my superhero costumes and fixing it up. The big deciding factor will be "am I now too much of a whale to fit into spandex." We'll see.
>>
>>8908415
If he's local I can't see him not knowing about Uber
>>
>>8908506
True.

I'll ask him either way just to be safe.
>>
What meetups/photo shoots has anyone heard of?

So far on FB I've seen:
Marvel on Saturday 12 PM
DC on Saturday 2 PM
Disney on Sunday at 2 PM
Dr. Who on Saturday at 3 PM
Dragon Age on Saturday at 3 PM
Valve on Saturday at 1:30 PM
Undertale Saturday at 4:30 PM
Fallout Saturday at 4:00 PM

Anyone heard of a Star Wars meetup? I would have thought that would have been popular this year...
>>
>>8908415

Uber KNOWS when there are big events and then they surge the price. AKA, they jack it up. SO the earlier you use it, the better. They surge during popular hours, but if they know there's a con, they do it for like 3 hour blocks. Still way cheaper than 30 bucks parking a day.

I'll probably head down for one of the days, maybe Saturday.

Wasn't planning on cosplaying, but I've really been enjoying The Division, and I can pretty much closet cosplay it, so I think I may dress up as my character for the hell of it.
>>
>>8909005
Alright. Good news is I checked with my friend and the hotel he got is pretty much across the street. Thank god.
>>
>>8914176
Glad to hear that! Hope you have a great time. Wondercon is a blast.
>>
Less than a week to go; how y'all doing?

>tfw sewing a spandex outfit when the character designer evidently had only a weak idea on how fabric and clothing actually behave
>>
I'm an idiot and thought that I bought a 3-day badge, but I actually got my FANIME 3-day badge and I got them mixed up. Now Saturday and the 3-days are sold out.

I'm not too sad as I'll still go Friday and Sunday, and I can go explore LA on Saturday instead. Just kind of a bummer because I'm going to be debuting my Black Canary and won't be able to make it to the DC meetup! Maybe next year.

This is my first time at Wondercon. Anything that I should know about before I go? My friend and I nabbed an AirBnB about 10 minutes away and we're just going to Uber it.
>>
>>8921240
If the DC meetup is outside you might be able to ghost it. I haven't looked at the map yet though, so I could be totally wrong there.
>>
>>8921240
Try actually going to the purchase page instead of just the page where they label the badge as Sold Out. I managed to snag one this way a few days ago, you might get lucky too.
>>
>>8906721
>Poor person SDCC
More like the consolation prize for those who couldn't get SDCC tickets.

I'm only going on Saturday.
>>
>>8907520
STFU LAfag. LACC is terrible for these types of conventions.
>>
>>8921289
I thought about that, too! I'll probably take a look at the maps. Thanks, anon!

>>8921424
Damn, this is great advice! Unfortunately there weren't any left when I went to the actual purchase page. I will totally keep this in mind though, thank you! Glad at least one of us got lucky.
>>
>>8919752
I feel your pain. I'm excited because the spandex suit I'm doing had SEAMS in places that made SENSE this time.

>>8921240
This is the first time its been at the LA Convention Center, so what it will be like is kind of anyone's guess. Generally its busy without being absolutely packed. If you're a comic fan, there's lots of cool guests and panels.
>>
>>8907520
LACK is dog shit. Anaheim CC is larger in total space and not designed by an idiot. The downtown area the LACC is located in is terrible, I hope they move back when construction is done
>>
>>8922662
Oh nooo, I'm so sorry that you couldn't get one! If you're really after one, maybe keep an eye on it these next few days. Maybe it changes depending on refunds? You might be able to snag one with last minute cancellations.

I'll post from time to time to let anyone following this thread know if I find any cool free goodies or what not. Will be taking lots of photos with my super new iPhone. I'll be on the hunt for League cosplay like I do every year. Have a fun Friday everyone!

I went Friday and Saturday

seemed most people started coming after 2pm on Friday...I got there around 3 and waited probably 45 min just to pick up my badge. The main lobby was decently busy but obviously still less than Saturday at peak. Overall I liked the extra space but I really hate the layout of LA

Well I for one had a great time. There was too much space, but I agree with the anons that said it was nice to have elbow room. Waltzing through the Artist Alley without having to chug along like a human centipede with everyone was nice. We could stroll and actually look at all the booths and their art. First time at a con none of the shirts caught my fancy which was a bummer. I always get a quirky shirt to commemorate my time there. Oh well.

Star Wars was the new Deadpool. There were more Kylo Rens than any Deadpools I saw. But the space was too big for the handful of cosplayers. I tired to take as many photos as I could, but I think I always manged to get a good angle cause nobody was crowding me. I think it was 1 cosplayer to every 10 normies. All three days sold out, but it certainly didn't feel like there were 60,000 people. It was AWESOME to always have a seat at all the panels we wanted to go to, I highly enjoyed seeing everything I wanted even with the people who squatted in the rooms for the NEXT panel. But no drama, no weirdos, nothing super exciting. Hope everyone else had a good time! I'll start my lovely little photo dump now.

i liked the much more relaxed atmosphere for the panels and expo floor, but I really think the spread out layout meant most cosplayers were scattered between outside, the main lobby and all the connecting halls. Also, thanks for the pics

For sure. I think there were more cosplayers outside then in. And that kills the whole idea to moving to a bigger building, don't it? thought I was reading some articles how all the people what went this weekend really helped boost the LA area's economy by 6 million bucks. LA is going to try to get it back in 2018.

Cause Wondercon isnt SDCC sized, and they didnt advertise it anywhere on the site that you needed to reserve parking online, so the lot stayed a good chunk empty and they were turning people away without a reservation

I would say everything was well deserved (except one), but only cause there wasn't much to pick from? WonderCon has a Star Wars Sponsored Award, right? But if you only have one Star Wars group...well, I guess you're gonna win, huh? And this year there were two Star Wars groups, and surprisingly, the judges split the prize cause they were both awesome. And they were! So that worked out nicely.
But off the top of my head the winners were:

Lady Groot who won Audience Favorite and 3rd Place. I liked it and she did the little Groot dance and would freeze as she walked across the stage. Her dress really looked like bark, so that was cool. Also she's a teacher and her kids gave her the idea and they helped her make the dress? Or the hat? Or something, so I thought that was nice.

The two Star Wars groups were both fight skits that were done awesomely. One was the fight between the three main people of the Old
Republic Game. Second one was an India stylized fight between Vader vs Luke and R2D2 child. Very creative.
A Nightmare Before Christmas Carnival style trio won most creative? But they were decked out in detail and looked really clean and fun. (next pic I'll post).

2nd or 1st place or Best Armor went to a nine foot tall Hulk Buster with all the cool light up LCDs. Thing was huge and had a really nice paint job.

Funniest Award went to The Hobbit- Under Two minutes. Lady was the Dragon in a dress, Bilbo and Legolas were in the group. It was indeed funny, but again, I don't recall any other "funny" ones, so they won by default?

Hawk Woman won a place or a mention. 3,000 individual feathers on the wings and she was only one that made any noise by shouting out a warrior yell. Her mace lit up.

The Bullshit Award went to an original design that was a women covered in purple glitter and star pants? White strips of fabric hung off her arm and she had a messy white long wig? I don't even remember what I was looking at.

Queen Minnie Mouse got the College of Costume Award for being most creative. And she gets to go to their 4 day weekend class for free. BUT, even though the dress was indeed nice, I think the judges never saw Kingdom Hearts before. Because I'm 1000% sure they thought it was an original design, and half the award is about being original and creative.

A super cute male Harely Quinn got a mention for his Sleep Over Night Time idea. He was in a cute onesy and his butt flat was open and he had black Batman underwear one. He looked like a major dork with glasses and short blond hair, so I actually liked it too.

The half time show was SO amazing!!! It was a real dance group of super hot and fit people, and their dancing was perfectly synced. It was S.H.I.L.E.D themed, and they made their own music mix. Then Deadpool dropped in and it was hilarious and THEN the whole X-MEN team joined. (guys in above pic were some I found before the show started. So when I saw them on the stage I was really surprised). I loved it so much. I would glady pay to see them preform again. It was so nerdy and so cool at the same time. Major props to those guys.

That's all I can remember. One lady totally took someone's spot, I'm sure. She was "Earth Sprit" or something, and she just danced around to some piano music in her "outfit". It was a shirt, a shall, and a long skirt sewd onto a short skirt? I'm sure she took an actual cosplayers real costume spot and I felt butt hurt over it.

The WonderCon MC is super chill and funny too. Great guy.

A better pic of the Armored Gems. And that's it! Didn't feel like I took a lot of shots, but like I said either everything was a duplicate, store bought Halloween costumes (Elsa, Kylo Ren, Deadpool, Harley, Rick and Morty, Spiderman, ect...) or I couldn't find people! Halls were bare, but I was so busy with panels and meeting up with people I didn't even get a chance to check out any of the big group meet ups outside. Or go outside in general. Can't wait for ComicCon and Anime Expo! Good job everyone who did dress up and got off their lazy butts to actually make something. Unlike me, who will forever keep saying "Next year I'm totally gonna make something."
Hope I caught a gull in one of these pics.

This is going to be the new method for sure at SDCC but its also their first try at it so hopefully it gets better

for example they already said they will look into raising the scanner so everyone doesnt have to bend over just to swipe the badge

>>

>raising the scanner
As far as I could tell, it was 50/50 convenience/inconvenience until later in the weekend, when more people were picking up on it and started wearing their badges near their belts.

>of course I'm biased because I keep my badge looped around my hip-height bag (because cosplay), so having the scanners at midsection-height was perfectly convenient 4 me

Wondercon is like SDCC (aka normiecon), you don't get a large portion of the cosplay or anime convention community attending
>>
>>8937657
Aw really? Are you saying smaller anime cons are more fun?
>>
>>8937683
well, it depends what you're expecting in comic conventions. i mean, if youre expecting anime related stuff at wondercon, then you're doing it wrong.

I personally love wondercon and have been going ever since they moved it to anahiem.
Friday and Saturday alone I spent half the day watching panels/premiers of stuff.
>>
>>8937657
I would agree with you if it weren't for the past two Wondercon Anaheim's that had a pretty significant chunk of the anime cosplay community.

Simply put, they didn't like LA for this con, and they made it known by not even attending.
>>
>>8937729
That's true. I didn't see aaaany anime cosplays. All Star Wars, comics, Disney, marvel, some League, some Halo, and some mortal Kombat, but no anime. Not even a AoT
>>
>>8937735
Its not an anime convention? Why would expect anime cosplayers to come if its not an anime convention?
>>
>>8938622
If they went to Wondercon in Anaheim they would have noticed that Wondercon drew quite a huge contingent of Anime Cosplayers from the LA area. It just happened that this year, the first and only year the con moved to LA did most of them not attend.

How did the angry lesbians go? I was trying to wait in standby for the signing and missed the panel. Terrible idea since they just picked random ass people to go in last, despite be being there first. I was curious about how much rage there'd be. I heard Eliza practically only talked about Lexa because of obvious PR reasons.
