Fingers crossed schedule and exhibition info comes out this week.
>>
The more I read the worse it gets but I have way too much non-refundable money sunk into going to not go and I'd rather be there than at work, anyway.
If nothing else, I suppose I can bring my dead SLR and pretend to take pictures of people to pass the time.

list of rejected panels. Some of these look kinda fun, hoping they're duplicates of similar panels that made the cut. Looking forward to the schedule

I don't think even the special guests know what their schedules are like yet. I'm planning to hang out with someone and we're both waiting on his scheduling.

If I want to save an image for real I'll use my phone. Either that or scramble to acquire and familiarize myself with a K-S2 in the next two weeks.

>and they let stuff like Zap's Space ship panel.

Hey man, you sayin' my panels are shit? >:(
>>
so is there going to be a meet-up or what?
>>
>>8900535
They certainly aren't anime- or Japanese culture-related, along with half the other panels that continue to be accepted at an anime/Japanese culture convention.
>>
>>8900439
>>8900445
with this many rejects it's amazing they accept any of those "ask a ____" or "pretend we're ____" panels at all. I thought they were running those in the program because they had no other panels in waiting
>>
>>8900548

Yeah, I get that a local comms for some of these fandoms might be big, but that's still no reason to justify Q&A panels.

You'd think that yeah, they'd be taking them 'cause they had nothing else, but guess not. Unless the submissions on the rejects list were just terribly written which is always a possibility.
>>
>>8900560
I suspect the reason some were taken (which I don't think was actually a lot? I know 3 Hetalia ones were rejected... Probably due to being made by teenagers, but hey.) is because it fills seats, not because it's quality. Cons don't inherently care about quality.

Though! Many of the ones rejected were rejected because the people who submitted it... had 2 other panels accepted. 3 gets you a free badge. So.
I'm sure, to them, they could justify Q&A panels for the pure fact that they rejected a whole bunch of them for either being shit, or to avoid giving free badges.

I'm fairly bitter about how staff is going so far, and I can only urge people that are actually local still (aka not me, since I've been stuck in texas for 3 years) to actually bother being voting members, and kick the dinguses who can't fucking run a con on out in favor for people who can. That's the only plus about Sakuracon- those people in charge are voted in by "voting" members (aka anyone with a badge in the previous year.)
>>
>>8900545
>>8900548
I'm really disappointed at what got rejected

the western culture and ask/sleepover/dating bullshit panels should definitely come after anime/jp culture panels and I KNOW some of those got in
>>
>>8900545
I would absolutely argue our panels are relevant. As you yourself said, it's an ANIME and Japanese culture convention. Part of the anime culture is video games, and general nerd culture -- Things we actively try to include in all of our panels.

That being said, however, I think it's bullshit not to include lolita panels. Lolita's not only Japanese culture, but very much Anime culture as well. As much as lolitas might want to argue that lolita =/= anime, anime has helped popularize it (for better or for worse) and brought it to many peoples attention as... Something that exists at all.
>>
>>8900584
Like, I think what Anon was getting at is that they're rejecting Lolita because "it's not related", which is clearly stupid, since it's a Japanese CULTURE con. Whereas, they're A-Okay with your panel, which is western media. Your panel IS a-okay, but it seems stupid to be OK with that, and hate on Lolita.
I have no idea what got up that person's ass to refuse Lolita stuff, though. Yikes.
>>
>>8900574
>3 gets you a free badge
They don't even give you a badge just for being a panelist? That seems a bit stingy. Is it normal for cons not to give a badge to people hosting panels?
>>
>>8900604
No, it does seem to be normal to give a badge for just ONE panel. Sakuracon didn't even do the 3 up until last year, from my understanding. It's kinda shit, considering it's such a large con and they wouldn't lose shit for giving a few badges away free.
And having the 3rd of mine rejected made me realize that at door prices are now 70 a pop. What the fuck.
>>
>>8900592
Oh, yeah, I figured as much, as well. I just think anon might be shitting a little too hard on "loosely related" content panels.
>>
>>8900610
I didn't personally read into it that way (but I barely read anything into most posts, so I'm no judge), but I can understand that you would.
I'm glad you got your panel accepted, all the same.
>>
>>8900614
I am a jaded old man now. Everything offends me these days!

I'm happy we got all our panels in, too. I'm a bit worried though, they gave us a much smaller room for Spaceship of Love this year. That panel's usually packed as is...
>>
>>8900626
Weird? Maybe they're expecting less of an audience or something? When you pack a room and have people sitting on the floor & peeking in the door, they'll learn.
Though I wonder if whoever is in charge of panels just...didn't realize what your panel is about? (That said, I'm starting to wonder what my friend is doing for panels, because all he said was "coordinator" and I'm tempted to clonk him upside the head if he's making these dumb ass decisions.)
>>
>>8900634
Yeah, I have no idea. We had a successful panel last year. I didn't notice any less of an audience? I certainly hope we didn't, at least. I'd be heartbroken!

I had to wonder if they were trying to shy away from fan panels in 6C or something. Figured maybe they were trying to get it just for Guests or some such. I know we've pissed off a certain guest in the past!
>>
Anyone have advice for getting over first-time convention nervousness? After debating cosplay options for months, I'm finally at checkout for a wig while questioning my life choices and sweating bullets.

I swear these jitters are going to drive me mad before I even get to Seattle.
>>
>>8900705
When is the last time you went to a big event and had fun? Did you give a shit? No? Channel that. You're there to nerd out with thousands of other people. Have some fun. Are you going by yourself? Do you know any friends who are going?
>>
>>8900705
what will you be wearing?
>>
>>8900708
I'll be going with a couple friends who all have experience cosplaying at Sakura-con before, while I've only done it once at a small regional con. I think I'm just worrying if I'll be "good enough", so I'm glad you brought up the part where this is for fun and not a competition.

>>8900712
Having run out of time to do anything involving armor or extensive self-fabrication, I've finally decided on Shirou from F/SN. Just ordered the rest of the personal costume, so now it's just a matter of figuring out which reasonably-sized sword to build on short notice.

Gotta be the bone of my sword and all.
>>
>>8900722
Everything is more fun when you're with friends. Even the most boring and horrible event is tolerable when you're with friends. Plus you're a dude. You're allowed to give zero shits about appearance.
>>
>>8900733
That isn't the right attitude though.
Do your best and be proud even if your cosplay isn't super.

They are pretty shitty to their entertainers/guests too. I heard that they don't even discount or comp a room/pay their DJs. Its rumored that they make them bring their own equipment. I honestly wouldn't want to do any event that would not let me have a safe space for my $2,000 stuff for my show.

It's worth noting that most of the time when people get involved with Sakuracon, they do remember it's a charity thing. So, no, the guests and DJs don't get paid what they would usually make, but I do believe they used to get rooms comped. If they can do it for volunteers, they can do it for DJs.

I'm personally bitter about the panelist/badge thing because they don't lose any money printing off an extra paper badge with a name on it.

Remembering when I first saw the S-con 2009 commerical. I self-cringed as a long time attendee but also thought it was halirous. Wasn't suprised it became a meme, heh. Sakuracon 2009 was the last good S-con. Couldn't top the Girugamesh. I remember the higherups were so pissed over that. I loved seeing people cosplaying as the Girugamesh guy. I also lived near the convention center so we had "Girugacon" at my place.

>>
>>8900922

Well, they do lose money. If it takes 3 panels to get a badge and me doing one panel means I still have to buy a badge (I paid $60), then if they gave me a badge for free 'cause I did a panel, they did lose out on $60. Now I think that giving a badge to panelists is fair because I'm helping fill their schedule, and I think less of Sakura Con for having this policy. But you can't fool yourself thinking cons don't lose money giving out free badges. They just budget an account for it ahead of time.

>>8900574

>Cons don't inherently care about quality.

Maybe Sakura Con doesn't but you can't just say all cons don't care about quality. I think a lot of East Coast cons definitely do, and certainly any con that has banned Q&A is trying to create an atmosphere of more meaningful, perhaps even educational, content.
>>
>>8900751

Maybe not everyone, but some do. I go to panels to learn something or yeah, to have a good time. Maybe West Coast cons are just different.

>>8900751

Not sure what shojo you have read but there are plenty with unhealthy relationships. The difference is that Japan considers all that romantic (ditto for rape in yaoi) whereas in the West we tend to see it for what it is, emotional abuse.

You're talking to different anon here. I'm the person who initially brought it up. You are being overly defensive. To start, no, not everyone will like your panel so don't get so upset when someone expresses not liking it. No one was even shitting on it, so I really don't get why you're so up-in-arms. I brought your panel up because it's the first panel I thought of that's not Japanese related. Calm yo' tits.
>>
Did anyone else contact the panel guy with a change? Been 24+ hours and no response to my email or the one where the poor girl replied all.
>>
>>8900885
hahaha, i love it.
Probably because it's not ~japanese~ and con staff doesn't care what people want
>>
>>8901527
Zapp has three panels though
>>
>>8900584
Yea you need to be less defensive, you're not painting a great picture of yourself.
Besides, there are entire cons for video games and 'nerd culture'.
Conversely, I can't imagine people at PAX are very fond of anime. Or Comicon.
I'm not saying you shouldn't have a panel, but I think you are grasping for straws to be accepted and liked by everyone.
>>
>>8901008
That was my third year going.
AND GAY MEN!
>>
>>8901633
What's your point?
>>
What cosplayers have you seen over and over again each year, yet have never had a conversation with?

There are a couple I have seen every year and I still don't know their names.
>>
>>8901870
About 1/3 of the cosplayers I see I recognize from previous years and I've never talked to any of them, but that's to be expected because I never talk to anybody.
>>
>>8901527
>>8901650
Woah now, I'm not trying to be defensive, so I apologize if it's coming off that way! I don't really give a shit if people don't like my panels or what we do. Different strokes for different folks. Was just trying to have some fun up there with my first post. Eventually ended up on my personal views on the matter, is all. Don't agree with 'em? More power to you. Considering where the conversation went though, I can see how that's what would be read. I just think that a lot of the "not explicitly anime / japanese themed" panels can totally belong.

>Conversely, I can't imagine people at PAX are very fond of anime. Or Comicon.
I don't know. I've never gotten that sense from any type of convention I've gone to. I just generally found that the content involved, merch cosplay and panels, leans towards the one side but everyone was cool with non-related cosplay and panel things. I've at least never heard anyone complaining about it. Maybe I've just been lucky in avoiding them.
>>
>>8901873
I'm going to really push myself to talk to more people this year. I've worked harder on improving my cosplay skills and its more fun when you don't look like you spent only two hours on your whole cosplay.
>>
>>8901907
I'll talk to you regardless of your cosplay skills because no matter what, you're better at it than I am.
Youl have to be the one to initiate, though, because I have a crippling inferiority complex.
>>
>>8901912
Working hard on your cosplay can boost your confidence. At least put your self worth issues aside for a few days and enjoy yourself.
>>
I'll most likely ask this again in a different thread but I figured I would mention it here.

After following different wig styling tutorials, I still can't get really clean looking weft clumps. My wigs end up looking worse after I style them. I see wigs in cosmode that look styled but still natural and clean vs badly styled wigs that exaggerate fake appeal. I want to achieve that.

How do you guys style your wigs?
>>
>>8901931
>Working hard on your cosplay can boost your confidence.
I've had a Panzer Cop suit in the planning stages for several years now but I've yet to set aside any time for it. Too many other projects going on.
Even then, projects only increase my confidence in my fabrication skills, not my interpersonal skills.

>At least put your self worth issues aside for a few days and enjoy yourself.
No can do, I'm a professional masochist.
>>
>>8901946
It might be the quality of your wigs, and otherwise going slow with the amount of hair gel or hair spray or whatever hold you're using. Help thread will be better than this.
>>
>>8901980

There's these two guys I always see every year. One cosplays a final fantasy character, Aerith. The other one momiji from touhou (I think) and has a nice camera. I don't know if he is a photographer or not.
>>
>>8902118

And of course no panel changes were made. Just emailed "Panel Sheriff" again and copied the other people he had cced so maybe they're higher ups who can help? This is the third email in 48 hours and I haven't even got a "we're working on it" or "I've gotten your email, let me see what I can do" to acknowledge that he's even seen this.

Does Sakura Con check their social media? How else would you gulls suggest escalating this to actually get a response. It's two weeks to the con and I haven't been able to finish my panel because I don't know if they'll give me a spot where I'm not 10,000 feet in the air.

Well, at this point I don't ever plan on coming back to this shithole of a con, but I'd rather not burn the bridge just yet. I'm just so fed up. Normally I wouldn't be so panicky, but seriously, it's two weeks until the con. Am I doing this or am I not?

Regardless of what happens, I'm going to leave them some very honesty emails about this whole ordeal after the con.

I understand that you are passionate about your panel but do you go to the con for anything else? Like the culture and the guests?

It just seems like you can't take things in stride and how for the best.

Sorry, I meant to type "hope for the best".

I apologize for coming off strong. If this wasn't so close to the con perhaps I would feel much differently, but it is admittedly a blow to have gotten so far and maybe not be able to do this. I would say I am going to the con primarily to present the panel, secondly for the guests (but I had decided to go before those were announced). It probably sounds egotistical for me to say I'm going there to present, but I wanted to be able to share my research and experience working on the show. At this point I'm a broken record, and I apologize for that, so I'll stop posting.

I can't imagine any reason for giving a panel to be the main reason to fly to a convention. That's what people do for million dollar business proposals and/or if they are paid to do it. I said last year might be my last Sakura-con, but I had a good enough time that I decided to make the trek across the state. Again. Granted, I spent more of my time getting together with friends in the area than at the convention center, but still...

Not surprised the con leadership/organization is fucked up, seems to be a trend with anime cons. The local clusterfuck here in Spokane is exhibit A in how to take a great idea and turn it into get-along-gang afraid-of-pissing-people-off kiddie-con with godawful leadership. Sakura seems like it's that up to 11, with a bizarre dislike of numerous aspects of the culture its allegedly a convention for.

>>8900638
You've only pissed off one guest? Try harder. But seriously, your thing is one of the main reasons that keeps me coming back. Keep it up.
>>
>>8902512
Like, I wouldn't dare come up with insults regarding it. But I am confused. Why? Is it just a quiet room? I doubt it would be easy to bond with people just over a neurodivergence. Not one as complex as that. I am having a difficult time fathoming what in the world is going on here, and don't really have a description to figure it out.
>>

>>
>>8902570
It's not the same experience with censorship. Crunchyroll has a stream up, but with boring presenters and admins banning everyone that may be 4chan, it's just not the same.
>>
>>8902570
>internet connection
Unless you paid out the wazoo to have a dedicated service provider in the con grounds, it's a complete clusterfuck with so many devices and services in there, which is why even the booth streams pause every minute. It's been discussed and the conclusion is that it's just not viable for most people.

>Love Live! Song and Dance Panel

>>
>>8902948
I said fuck it, personally. And then proceeded to make a new project to fill up my time till con, because THAT'S what I needed. (It isn't Sakuracon till I'm wildly sewing up to the day I leave, I guess.)
(Casual and lolita is probably what I'm doing most of con.)
>>
>>8903110
We had one group attempt to start up but the leader was a mega psycho so it crashed and burned quickly
>>
>Zelda Mythology and Anime Mythology panels at the same time

WHY
if someone is interested in mythology, they'll want to go to both panels!

I'm also so sick of introduction to lolita panels. It isn't a panel for lolitas. They are so painfully boring for real established lolitas.

Though I think I went to one once where they had volunteers craft an accessory and we did a little fashion show. I was one of the volunteers. It was so much fun.
>>
how's the karaoke? I'm debating on checking it out.
>>
>>8903283
Sometimes embarrassing as hell, but the times I've gone, it's mostly just horribad weeb fun. If you're ok with marginally embarrassing people around you, there's no reason not to go be a singing weeb for a while.

>I'm unwilling to touch it till I know who is running it. Anyone have the panel list that gives names?
(referencing the lolita 101 panels sorry. I forgot to add that and just kinda spoke to a wall instead of a person.)
Though the crafting an accessory thing... I'd love to see one that operates as more of a workshop/interactive panel. It means the people who want to learn can learn, and even get an accessory they can wear out of it.
>>
Thank God for some panelists dropping and being able to swallow anxiety long enough to send an email; my third panel should be good, so yay for a horror anime panel!
>>
>>8903291
>lolita 101
I found out.
If anyone really does want to just see that panel, there is 100% no reason not to go. I know the person running it and they're brilliant, well dressed, and an awesome human.
(I might go, even if the information is useless to me.)

>>8908491
I think people who call it "season 2" are actually referring to ALO, which was god-awful. SAO II was decent, with GGO and Mother's Rosario being stronger than the Calibur quest.

>change writers
It's all from the hands of Kawahara.
>>
>>8908492
Some panel on modeling with some famous modeling dude from Japan. I guess the SC translators were awful at translating technical terms, and the audience members asking questions who knew Japanese asked in Japanese. At some point the con staff said to ask questions in english only, and I got the impression it was because the unprepared SC translators were royally butthurt. This is all second hand from my roommate's brother though.
>>
>>8908495
I think it might be more that other audience members couldn't understand Japanese. Some of the people in attendance are Media and they'd need to be able to jot down the questions as they hear them. By excluding the rest of the audience from the question, it drives up the chances that other people will get lost/bored/frustrated and up and leave, which is the last thing you want to see happen at the panel. Double-translation of the Q & A also allows for far fewer questions to be asked and more time for the staff to filter the questions properly.
>>
>>8908495
Could also be that they want all the attendees to be able to understand the questions/answers unless the attendee asking in Japanese was also translating into English afterward
>>
>>8901135
Do you even watch/read/listen western media? It promotes almost nothing but unhealthy relationships and emotional abuse. Hate to say it, but Japan isn't the only closeted racist nation, they all are, by degrees.
>>
>>8908497
>>8908498
Per roommate, she remembers her brother saying the people asking stated their question in both languages. Again, all of this is hearsay.

If it's true, makes me think the con needs to prep their translators for events with specific guests. Particularly ones who will likely be using a lot of tech jargon. Considering the quality of people the con's been attracting to its staff in general though...
>>
>>8908491
it's fundamentally worse than that, but is spelled out in the light novels. The author ultimately decided to turn the series into a lame harem partway through, and the anime producers successfully realised the demographic was easily swayed by fan service.

Reading that hurt my eyes. I had to stop halfway.

Special guests get their own hotel rooms, right? Or are they crammed into a single room, 2-3 special guests each? Because if SAO writer has his own room, I'll try to convince him to give people a special late-night reading of chapter 16.5. I'll bring refreshments.
>>
>>8908515
Most cons do not have people who know everything about whoever they are assigned to. In a perfect world you would have someone who is a mega fan who knows all the terms but that just isn't possible

>>
>>8908783

Log horizon is like 80% world building and politics so if that's not your cup of tea I don't think you'll like it.

Accel world though is a legit 9/10.
>>
>>8908495

professional translator-anon here (not interpreting or fun stuff like manga, just boring technical jargon), thought I'd throw my 2 cents in. SC has godawful interpreters every year--it is rare to see a con of this size that has interpreters cutting off so much important information that guests say, omitting tons of things/clearly having problems understanding specific terminology related to things the guest does or has worked on, and taking some major creative liberties in their translations for the audience. I feel awful for everybody who doesn't speak Japanese because they don't know just how bad it is and how much they're missing out on.

The thought that they would try to keep me from asking a question in Japanese so they could butcher it themselves is garbage. I honestly wouldn't trust them to translate it to the guest accurately, and if I can do it myself and say exactly what I want to in Japanese, that's what I do. I'd imagine this is the thinking of anyone who asks a question in fluent Japanese.
>>
>>8908537
Accel world is meh at best, at least sao had some interesting concepts for world building.

>>8908783

Long story short.

GF wants me to go with her to convention. Im a bigger weeb then she is but I hate these things but I'm going with her to make her happy. She wanted to do couple cosplay (I said okay as long as it wasn't something super crazy), not enough time to make the costume and I'm too poor currently to actually afford any materials to make the costume and I definitely don't want to try to cosplay half assed. So I think she's upset about that a little. Also afraid of encountering ex-GF there because she was a huge sonic freak and probably still is.

Any advice from femanons here on how I don't embarrass her or ruin the fun for her? I just want her to have a fun time because she really likes these things. So is there like a do and do not list or something when it comes to these???

What exactly should I expect from this?
>>
>>8909912
You don't need to cosplay to have a fun time.
Check out the schedule before hand, print it out and circle what you want to go to. Some things will conflict. You'll need to figure that out.

Keep an eye on when the expo hall closes. It always sneaks up on me when I wanted to go through it more.

You'll feel awkward for the first couple hours, but you'll settle in and realize that people are very tolerant. You're being compared to screaming glomping weebs. You'll be fine.

Cons are fun. Don't over think it.
>>
>>8909217

Is the only musical guest Band Maid?

Fuck the concerts are usually my favorite thing at sak but this is disappointing.
>>
>>8909952
Yes, it's a disappointment to me as well.
>>
>>8909951
IIRC, getting Urobochi was cheap af.
>>
>>8909952
also disappointed, especially after last year they had 2 big name music guests I am a huge fan of.
>>
>>8909986

Yeah, but when was the last time he actually came to a US con? Maybe I just don't hear about it because I don't give a shit, but wasn't in Katsu a few years ago?

Sakura-Con 2012 I believe
>>
>>8909951
if gen = lots of people flying in then maybe Japan Expo USA wouldn't have been as empty as it was lol
>>
>>8910001
is two the norm or one the norm for musical guests at Sakuracon?
>>
>>8903771
Same. Just now reading through the thread to catch up on what's going on.
Gonna try making the meeting, but I'm probably only going to be at Sak for one day this year.

As someone who was actually in the panel front row, most of the people who talked in Japanese weren't very good at it, to the point where even the guests weren't exactly sure what some people were asking. Trust me, the people attempting to try to speak Japanese was pretty damn cringy for the most part.
The actual people translating were fine, they did their job well as there wasn't anything really technical going on and there were just fun stuff being talked for the most part; how they got in the industry, family stuff; nothing super amazing. I had no personal complaints.

Glad someone fucking brought up what happened with Archer and him never getting released to the point him coming out became a fucking meme.

There's been a handful the past couple years. I tend to avoid them because sadly (and I say this as someone who's a toku fan himself), your average toku scene is made up of exactly the kind of people who you'd expect to take a show for 8-year-olds extremely seriously. I've had better luck at California cons, but the Seattle toku scene is pretty cringey.

Don't constantly play on your phone ignoring her, or the things around you. Like the other anon said, look at the schedule and ask if there are any panels/events she wants to go to. Just focus on having fun together, and you guys will have a great time
>>
Had anyone heard from the guy doing panels about any changes? He pulled my panel off of the waitlist and said he'd find a slot, but hasn't gotten back to me.

Is anyone going as Ebola-chan/Zmapp-chan? Or has seen one?

I'm very curious about it ever since I've seen anons post some Ebola/Zmapp-chan cosplays from Sakuracon before on 4chan.
>>
>>8911630
ebola-chan's popularity died out as soon as people realized oh wait we're not getting ebola because we're in fucking america and we don't eat bushmeat or dryhump infected dead
