It's actually adopted from Fraternities. They often have a (small) paddle with their letters engraved on one side, and their slogan/crest/whatever on the other. They used to be used for discipline, then were used in initiation and blahblahblah, but is now mostly symbolic. Some will have oar-sized ones as decoration on their walls in their chapter house. The small ones are given as gifts to graduating members, as well.
That's why the YAOI ones were always engraved with all caps letters early on, to mimic the Greek letters used in Fraternity names. As people forgot it was tied to the old Frat tradition, that changed.

I know back in middle school and early highschool I had no concept of my body and hygiene to go with it, I showered and washed my hair maybe twice a week. I picked clothes off the floor and rewore them, didn't change underwear every day, didn't pluck my eyebrows or shave my legs.
I'd get stupid obsessed with one thing that I'd binge read/watch until the very end and ignore everything else.
I used to color my hair with markers and sharpie paint my nails and use cheap colored eyeshadow mixed with my chapstick to make crazy lipstick colors.
It's just normal 12-15 year old behavior where they don't have any idea of how look/come off to people so they neglect how they look or dress in dirty/stained clothes without even noticing and just go about their business.

Some of it though, you honestly sound kind of mean. Her weight and her gym class remarks just make me annoyed and I really hope you're not saying those to your child because at that age, hearing from their parent that they're fat because they eat everything and how "Gym class isn't an actual work out" could really fuck them up.
They'll think well if gym class isn't helping then why bother trying and instead the only option is to just not eat if they're that concerned about their weight. Instead, take your kid outside on family walks or get a Wii and some of those Wii Fit games that will get them up and moving if they're really into gaming. Make it into a family game night or something or do a reward system that if she comes home after school and clocks in a certain amount of time on the Wii Fit or (if she'll wear a fitness tracker) certain amount of steps on the fitness tracker, you'll all do something special or she'll get a toy from the dollar store, whatever appeals to her.
Kids at that age are going to make stuff up, they're going to lie, they're going to be unhygienic, but you can make compromises with them to save yourself a headache and give them some independence. You can't pick out their clothes without a fight but you can set out 3-4 outfits and let them choose which one to wear. You can make showering more enjoyable by letting them pick out their own shampoo/body wash. You can even help them be more unique by offering to do their hair in braid designs or use cute hairbows and bands (pic related). It gives them something to show off and get attention with without resorting to stuff that really shouldn't be put in hair.

this shit triggers me because i knew someone who did this kind of thing and she turned out to have NPD as an adult. she was younger than me but i was afraid of her because she never developed empathy for others and would lie or mimic emotional things she saw on TV with utterly dead eyes to try to manipulate people, but she was clueless about how emotions in others work so it tended to just feel weird and inappropriate.
she would terrorize her brothers by acting like a wild animal, roaring and yowling and hissing at them, chasing them around the house on all fours, and then just meow stupidly and stare blankly when confronted about how she was scaring them. i babysat her and could not leave her in a room alone with them: they could mostly get along without her, but once she prowled over to them all hell would break loose.

I know a lot of the stupid shit I did as a tween/young teen was a compromise because my parents wouldn't let me do what I actually wanted. (Mainly arts and crafts orientated, I would ruin clothes and shit because I didn't have any real art supplies) She's probably wearing stupid shit in her hair because she doesn't have access to what she actually wanted to put in her hair. Not saying you should indulge every single one of her stupid desires, because kids want everything, but it's not unreasonable to supply a kid with some things to express themselves.
A lot of the rest sounds like problems with understanding how her actions affect other people, which is basically empathy. You can't teach a kid empathy by telling them "that's wrong!" Or correcting them. Behaving the right way comes from thinking the right way in the first place.
It's probably why her humour is shit too, she's thinking "What would make *ME* laugh?" Instead of "What would make other people laugh?"

Giving a child some healthy independance is a great boost them instead of saying "No!" every time they want to do something. They'll just end up doing it anyway but in a more destructive way. Tell them "No, you can't have any coloring books" will just lead to the kid finding something they CAN color on.. like the wall. Not saying you have to immediately run out and buy your kid some coloring books right then and there but it wouldn't hurt to toss them a few sheets of printer paper and let them indulge for a half hour so you can have some down time.
And yeah, empathy isn't something kids just instinctively know and punishing them for something they do/say with no explanation for WHY it's upset you is just a big no.
If your child says something hurtful to another child, how are they going to understand what they've done wrong if you go straight to punishing them for it or just saying "That was bad! Don't say that again!"
You have to explain to your child, "Do you know why this is upsetting?" of course they'll answer no and that's when you tell them "Well it's upsetting because what if the other child had said that to you?" and explain a scenario that applies to them.

Look, I used to refuse to bathe when I was a kid. I'd never want to wear underwear either, I used to put feathers and beads in my hair because I thought they were cute. I... I don't know what is all this about it being normal for children to not bathe and be gross. I remember being a kid growing up in Mexico of all places from ages 0-11 and being perfectly normal with a reasonable standard for cleanliness along with everyone from my classes. Not all children are the same and you can have two siblings that are vastly different when it comes to brushing teeth and bathing. One will enjoy it while the other will hate it.
Considering Anon's child has ADHD, focusing on bathing themselves is something they probably don't enjoy because they could be doing so many other things and to them, bathing is just a hassle. It probably doesn't help that Anon-Mom physically barricades the bathroom door until she's bathed to Anon-Mom's standards.
But yeah, it's definitely not unreasonable to demand for your child to bathe but even if the child understands the concept that "I have to bathe for my own health and it's not socially acceptable to be dirty" that doesn't mean they'll do it willingly or enjoy it.
I think if kids are muddy or otherwise visibly dirty they'll clean themselves but if their hair is greasy or unbrushed they just don't care. That's how I was with the "I don't want to bathe" so to me that's a normal thing. My grandmother would forcefully scrub my head and dump a pan of water over me when I stayed at her house so I began to hate it. That's probably what this little girl is doing as well, she's being forced to scrub down thus hates it.

I am still rooming with her at an upcoming convention and having to spend most of the con around her but I have another friend coming from out of town to visit for the con and we've already made plans together so for the first time ever, Coloring-chan and I won't be attached at the hip 24/7 all con weekend. I also booked my own travel so for the first time we won't be traveling together either and made sure I got Greyhound tickets because she hates the bus and her mother won't pay for bus tickets.
She hasn't forced any more of her stolen DA colorings on me but I spent a lot of hours working on a craft and posted it to Twitter to show my friends who had been following it (didn't tag anyone, just straight uploaded it) and all I got from Coloring-chan was "Pretty" despite me always coming up with at least a whole sentence full of compliment for her colorings.
Ah well, I'm not going to let it bug me. She's been pretty miffed about me furthering my education (she went to comm college and then had to drop out before graduating) and makes excuses for why she can't go back despite being eligible for financial aid. She still desperately wants thousands of dollars to fall into her lap for college in Korea though which may have a lot to do with it.
