I don't drink at any other convention except magfest. It's kind of like a group mentality/peer pressure, but not as a bad thing. Magfest is the only convention I see people I may have not seen in a year. My friends talk about it all year.

this, this, a million times this. when i talked to the concierge on the phone a month or two before katsucon the woman basically admitted that they hiked the room rates purely to cover the costs of hotel damage that they anticipate. with magfest being literally the week after a particularly egregious display at katsu, we as magfest attendees really cannot afford to drop the ball because that may just be the final straw that ties the gaylord's hands and forces them to ban both cons indefinitely.
the problem is, telling people this on /cgl/ is preach to the choir. if i'm being honest, i'm almost certain all this hotel bullshit we see more and more of is a direct result of cons going mainstream and bringing in normies who don't give a shit about the community, but rather just use cons as an excuse to get shitfaced and hit on attractive girls.

They don't advertise the prices for the concepts, you have to ask. For comparison, though, the biggest non-concept suite is 349/night during midseason July. It'd be reasonable to double that for one of the bigger concepts, especially for a convention.

I daytripped to Magfest for the first time, and the difference between Magfest and Katsucon was like night and day. Katsucon is filled with sullen cosplayers standing around murdering time in between photoshoots who shoot sullen, judgmental glances at anyone cosplaying from the same series as them; Magfest is filled with happy nerds. I liked the Jam Pods, too. I'm not going to stop going to Katsucon, because I like the friends and photographers who go there, but I'm definitely going to daytrip to Magfest again next year.
It was also fun to just see the marina bustling with cosplayers at sunset after everyone was cooped up in the Gaylord last weekend, but that's less of a difference between Katsucon and Magfest than it is a difference between 20 degrees and 50 degrees.

All in all it was another great MAGfest. The autism was a bit less than usual just because con staff was preventing a Katsu 2.0. On top of that, around 100 people gathered at the shore to honor Troy Murdock. See you faggots next year.

The programming and performers weren't really my cup of tea this year but I still had a really incredible time. I met so many new people and had some of the most fun since I started going to cons. Talking to Mark Jacobs at the Camelot Unchained booth about mmos was a highlight, that guy is the coolest. Also I was really stoked that Tokyo Attack brought 6 fucking Jubeat cabinets.

First MAGfest, working shopkeep, we made out pretty well. Observations for next year.
1. If I work marketplace next year, I'm closing down earlier or taking more frequent breaks. As much as I love how they have the main festival layout easy to traverse from Arcade to Market to Indie Showcase and so on, the noise gets unbearable.

4. Inadvertantly ended up at Snacks party where I met some pretty boss people.
The only drawback is losing a couple small things (which I probably got in the door of my house and dropped like an idiot, anyway), my mutated KatsuMAG con plague, and just NOT ENOUGH SLEEP . I needed to pace myself better.
Also I really fucking wish Katsucon and MAGfest could be in March or April so being on the river would be reliably nicer. Saturday this week vs saturday last was night and day, totally ridiculous.
I think this is my last magfest mainly because every group I go with has some sort of drama and invites a massive cunt to the rooms. Also I got super sick and missed all of Saturday unfortunately but that isn't magfest's fault.

I had no idea this was even a thing until this thread. Here I was thinking we were all under the same "insufferable faggot" umbrella. :'(
I'll be straight up, the con was great, the people were fantastic but the meet up was tough.
Further feel pretty rough about missing the Snacks party, it was the goal of this con and I just never got a single detail. Great job on their part for security but man I'm jelly of those who got to go. Next time amigos.
