So my father very kindly painted my bedroom for me when I wasn't able to, but he painted directly over the wallpaper, and now it's bubbling and peeling in places. Sorry for sob story- I'm living at some kind of commune for abused/homeless youth for years now, and I recently got the bad news that its bankrupt. I just got the news yesterday that there is a small studio for me but I need to start renting it this March. On the plus sice. You can buy a 4 ft x 8 ft particle board panel at home depot for $10. It's 3/8th of an inch thigh though. They sell a 5/8th inch thick one of the same dimensions for $20.

Get yourself some totes. Label them specifically what you're using them for. Start organizing your shit. You're gonna realize how much extra you have of certain things. Designate a home for stuff, label what it is. Got a shoebox just for bias tape? Label that box and have it on a bookcase with your other crafting supplies.
I've got a ton of scossors, but at least I know where they are and they have a home.

See if you can find some car window edging or similar trim. You can buy it in rolls, and then just cut thin particle board and clear plastic to size and "sandwich" it with the trim.
I've done a bunch of custom frames, but always aluminum ones, and that gets expensive fast if you want to do a bunch of big posters.

Free furniture on craigslist and maybe $30 of paint supplies will do wonders. Contact paper is also fun, but not usually great on the tops of desks or tables that get a lot of use. For decorating shelves and stuff though, highly recommend.

If you live near a university, see if they have a facebook sales page or "craigslist" page. I get furniture and decor for dirt cheap at the end of the semester when all the students are moving out and can't take their stuff, sometimes even for free too. Check out garage sales and thrift stores as well, some thrift stores have 50% days and such. I have a low budget too and I've found some really cute decor items even at Dollar Tree. Look on pinterest for ideas as well, they have a lot of low budget ideas. If you have a plain couch or chair, put some pillows or a throw blanket on it to make it look more cozy. I like to get fake flowers from the dollar store and put them into cheap vases to brighten up the room. A string of white Christmas lights around the window may seem a little cliche, but I've always thought that was a cheap solution for an extra cozy glow. Anyway, take it slow and good luck!

Good luck with your new place! As others have mentioned, paint is probably the easiest way to spruce up a piece. Another option is to change out the hardware (drawer pulls & handles). Just take the old stuff with you to the hardware store to check the spacing/size. If you can't afford prints or posters, you can get Staples, or other office supply places to print pretty nice ones for like $1.50 for 11"x17" if you bring in digital files. Some might be iffy about copyright, but generally don't care about obscure stuff. I used to do this for anime that didn't really have any merch over here. If you have a Re-Store in your city they can be a good source for materials and appliances. If you're bringing in any soft items, just be careful about bed bugs. The biggest thing with decorating on a budget is patience. Sometimes you have to live with something ugly and functional until the right thing comes along for the right price.
As much as the site is filled with yuppies, I like Apartment Therapy. They have some good advice for thrifting and giving face lifts to old stuff. Hope you like your new home anon!

I really liked the method in the book by Kondo Marie, "The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up". The basics of it are to get rid of everything that doesn't "spark joy". You do this by setting aside a period of time to focus on one specific category of your stuff (clothes) and get rid of everything you don't love in one shot. Hold each piece of clothing, decide whether it sparks joy. If you decide to get rid of it, thank it for its service to you and let it go. If you decide to keep it, you need to find a permanent spot for it to stay, be it a hangar, or a drawer, everything has a home. It really helped me think about my relationship with my possessions. If I don't love how a piece of clothing feels, or makes me look, I get rid of it. If I absolutely love an object, I'll keep it even if I don't wear it. Try to not be overly sentimental. If I used to love a piece, but don't anymore, I'll take a photograph of it before I let it go. There's no shame in donating clothes that don't work for you, and throwing away really worn out stuff. The only exceptions to this are the things I know I need for work, which may be practical, but not things I love, but I keep a reasonable quantity of only what I need.
If you have nice stuff, some consignment stores have purchasing counters where you can get some money back.

This and if being sentimental about clothes is a thing, you could always pick a specific place to donate to - just make sure you follow through! If you remind yourself, "I'm letting these clothes go to help sick kids or victims of a hurricane" maybe it will help you to let things go? Do research, some charities will even pick up from your porch/front yard so you don't even need to haul any of it anywhere.

Full length mirror - get an over the door one and deco it yourself. You could use something as simple as a string of battery powered lanterns (which have the bonus of being able to be taken off easily) or covering the frame with flowers or other cutesy motifs. The best thing with those mirrors is that they will hang off a 3M hook because they're so light, so if your door doesn't fit the hooks you can put it up on the wall.
For the night stand, I would consider getting a collapsible wooden step stool since that will give you multiple layers to put things on and it will also fold down. It can also be easily covered with a patterned cloth or lace overlay to make it more girly
For your hats - cute hat boxes. Depending on what the stores around your area are like, sometimes you can find huge gift boxes that are cute and work as hat boxes as well, but aren't as expensive.
Shoe storage and book storage are more tricky because in my experience the cheap, transportable plastic shoe racks are also really shit and don't usually last more than a year. If you do get one of those, go for a smaller one that holds something like 10 pairs of shoes because the ones billed as holding up to 30 pairs will invariably break due to the weight. For book storage I would go for sturdy and transportable over the cheapest option - and probably something like a wooden collapsible shelf.
Decoration wise, paper tissue flowers on a string are cheap (buy paper tissue, buy nice ribbon) and can be changed to suit whatever room you move to. I would also suggest a string of LED fairy lights which can liven up dark rooms and also just look nice.

I know this is so tmi but I've been sick for months and today I kicked my illness and my depression in the face and said "fuck you, today's the day I'm making my bedroom cute and organised!" So now the bedrooms started looking a lot better but we're not yet finished, but there's so much progress already. I'm so happy and me and my boyfriend had sex for the first time in months. does anyone have any ideas/recommendations on how to defuck a book collection? i have about a third of mine sorted and organized, but the rest is either laying on the floor or just crammed onto shelves, and unlike my clothes collection i'm waaaaaay more hoarding with my books. this month i dumped almost half of my closet into a donation bin no problem but the idea of throwing away my old paperbacks makes me cringe, and if it wasn't for that i probably would have had most of my room defucked by now.

It may help for you to have an "outbox" where you keep a bunch of books you're iffy about. Put your books in a box someplace out of the way and set a reminder on your handphone/calender for 3-6 months later, and once those months are up, re-evaluate if you really want to keep those books. If you wake up in the middle of the night and absolutely want them back, dig them out of the box and find a permanent place for them in your shelf. If you haven't even thought about the books, it's time to let them move on.
Additionally, you're going to feel better if you chose where to move them on to. Check if there's some kind of book donation programs, eg- you can donate it to the local library, to a homeless/women's/children's/etc shelter, Goodwill, etc. Places like Goodwill don't give you money for your books, but once they sell your books the proceeds go towards some other charity or cause, it helps to think about every book you give away as another way of helping out someone in need while giving another person the chance to enjoy a good book. Even if you donate them to the library, think of every book you let go as giving someone else a chance to discover a really good book you once enjoyed.

Went to Michaels today. They're having a sell on their memory boxes $2 each.Useful for both here and the sewing room thread. They're a good size for sorting accessories and other smaller stuff in your room. Also roughly about the size of a shoe box. So might be a nice way to organize some shoes. Painting the room would help a lot. It's not a good colour for a room. If you're in love with the colour, go full goth and paint all the furnature black.
Get some real curtains like suggested.
If you're going to keep that bed, remove the stickers/cards - new paint would be ideal - a bed rail would make it look much nicer, it would hide any mess if you can't make the bed easily.
How much room is under the bed? Remove the dangly shit. Either put a desk under there and make a cute sewing/study area. The paint under there clashes something awful with the walls. If you can only repaint a small section, paint that. Move all your posters under there or get rid of them. If you painted that section white you could have a little nerd cave - a white clean look with that kind of stuff will make it look less cluttered. This room has potential but the clashing colours are a big thing to overcome.

But like everyone has said you can get decent furniture for cheap or free off craigslist, from college students moving, garage sales, and even the dollar store.
A tip from my first apartment. Get one of those kitchen in a box sets from amazon, ikea, or even target if they have them. It has pretty much everything you need from utensils, cooking pans, to a knife block for $35-60 bucks. Not the best stuff imaginable but it lasted me for years.
