From a crafting perspective I'm usually very impressed by them. A lot of characters wearing masks aren't designed to have the slightest visible line of sight, or even functioning eyes at all.
If a cosplayer manages to work around that I find it more impressive than most good-tier wigs.

Besides a very few cases, people don't have the face of their character. Even an extremely well-made cosplay looks weird, if the face doesn't match imho. Doing masked cosplay eliminates this problem entirely.

I need a character originating from a Japanese source that wears a mask that could comfortably house pic related without the mic being pushed into my face. Bonus points if they have a fun/evil/unique voice.

No one knows my eyes are closed and I'm basically napping when there's a crowd snapping pics and I just move when I hear my handler say they're gone. Also the shock when I speak and no one expects a girl in there. And no one bothering me when I'm unmasked is nice.
I don't look like any character aside from mclovin from superbad so I'm kind of stuck with masked cosplay.
