Gurokawaii is a j-fashion that mixes the grotesque with the cute. Menhera is very similar, but uses medical themes rather than spooky and horror themes.

There might be themes that some people may not be comfortable with in this thread, browse at your own discretion.

If you don't,why so defensive and aggressive? Who is this "we"??? None of the japanese in asks make any gramatical sense and image translations are way off. Its very noticable and rather embarassing. Do yourself a favour if studying and use a dictionary, because it won't help you in the long run. It won't help the fashion either.
>>
>>8805455
I am far away from agressive and that Tumblr was started by a bunch of /cgl/ anons after the first Menhera thread including one native speaker that is the one making the japanese posts and confirms the accuracy of translations.

The only people we block is anyone sendinguns the typical "oh, this is so ableist" or "omocat supports pedophile rapist" sjw rants and the text is correct the way it is, Google Translate wouldn't even be abel to come up with this text entering "From this point I will reply in japanese. I would be very happy if you will answer me in japanese too. Stop making a fool of yourself. You don't know a lot about the topic. Obviously."
>>

And to add: I don't even know how you were thinking the posts was about the person's japanese, it was regarding them sending us messages about how much menhera is ableist and everything that gets called shota is child porn (right, every shota character is porn). That's why we said the person doesn't know a lot about it.

I could see how maybe in Japan the term might be "problematic" due to the supposed negative view that Japan has of mental illnesses (but I'm not really well educated enough on that issue to say for sure that japanese people really are dismissive of mental illnesses...that seems like something that may have happened in the past and got exaggerated and now everyone is like "omg ur not allowed to be mentally ill in japan!")

but anyway the vibe I get from western people interested in the fashion is that it's a way for them to reclaim all the shitty things they went through. Like finding a way to make something positive out of their personal struggles. Idk why this tumblr person assumes everyone into menhera is "neurotypical". I'd say that being interested in any sort of jfashion is a predictor of NOT being neurotypical lmao

obviously it's abelist since in order to take back words you have to play the victim!

>>
>>8805665
Neurotypical is not an edgy term for cool and original ~diffrent~ people. It's a clinical term for healthy people with no mental disorders. An interest in ANY fashion is in no way shape or form an indicator on your literal mental health.
"Lol I'm ~*~diffrent and wierd~*~" ≠ literally mentally unstable. You sound like an idiot edgelord (which I suppose is to be expected considering the thread I'm in.)

>>8805746
I'm not saying that liking jfashion causes mental disorders or mental disorders cause liking jfashion but the two seem to be correlated based on my experience in the community.
also I know what neurotypical means? I just don't know why the person who wrote that blog assumed everyone into the fashion was neurotypical esp because there seems to be a lot of lolitas/cosplayers/weeaboos who AREN'T neurotypical. it seems like they think everyone into menhera are just into it for the novelty when the feeling I get is that they are into it because they can relate to it.

Also I don't really care for the fashion and I'm just in this thread because I'm bored it's one of the fastest moving ones rn. But it's cool that being an edgelord can be associated with liking a fashion but being mentally ill cannot

Fyi the original is actually functional and does it's job as a windbreaker. I have worn mine in -2C with a sweater underneath no problem. The only downside is that you can't tighten the large waist to trap the heat. Also ApparelK is slow and backlogged af and it will take them months to ship.

The replica is just a fancy rain cape and the print is muddy. It does however come in red and black.

They both feel super thin and cheap.

Those necklaces are so cute. I used to make lots of things with embryos and foetuses on them during my edgy teenage years, but now I've actually known people who have had miscarriages and had to deal with that I feel like it's something only young teenagers could get away with being ignorant to my wearing. I don't want to start any fights, this fashion is really interesting in the ways it pushes boundaries.
Junko Mizuno uses them a lot in her art, very cute.

That's such a cute idea I hope someone in the aa thread sees it and does it better.

I think something like that or pic related is so obviously a fantasy character that it might just draw confused or grossed out looks from normies, but something that resembles a human foetus could easily cause a scene or upset in a public setting. I honestly wouldn't wear something like that anywhere but an alternative fashion event.

He is one of the top authors and artists for japanese horror manga.
The images are from the story "spirals".

Even the manga about his cat is drawn in a real horror way.

They didnt say it WAS a term for different people, they are saying that the tumblr poster is claiming that everyone into the fashion is neurotypical and thus are appropriating/abusing imagery or whatever from actually neurodivergent people. What >>8805665 is saying (I believe) is that the tumblr op shouldnt make the assumption that everyone who likes menhara is without mental illnesses.

Also, you are incorrect about the term neurotypical - it specifically refers to those without autism spectrum disorder/developmental disorders. The people who have changed the meaning are the ones using it incorrectly on tumblr.
>>
>>8805279
not into this thing but I would love to have a junji ito or shintaro kago shirt
>>
Is this considered a reactionary fashion in Japan? - As in, is there an element of expression and social commentary relating to the perception of mental illness and how it's handled etc or is it just considered a cute alt fashion?

Curious because mental health stigma in Japan is massive and the support system for people with mental health issues is severely lacking, especially for a modern wealthy nation.

I find the whole "if im following you please tag these things" really odd/a bit presumptuous maybe. I get it if its things in general that people probably SHOULD tag, like rape or nsfw, but if its something specific to yourself isnt it a bit egotistical to be like "you have to change the way you blog for the sake of me". I dont really care if youre following me or not!

weird that I've never heard this mental illness thing in japan before even thought I'm an oldfag otaku, I guess I thought they had it in good shape because of their free healthcare etc

so are mentally ill people left alone in japan and there is no help? or only help with those with loadsa dosh?

mental illness is pretty common in finland or at least in my life and there is stigma or more like people make fun of you but it's usually from cunts n assholes you don't wanna be friends with anyways
>>
>>8811187

>neurotypical
>neurodivergent

Is this an academic term or? Because I'm pretty heavily involved with clinical psychiatry and I never see these terms used.
>>
>>8811235
Not familiar with mental healthcare in Japan but I'm guessing it's probably close to that of South Korea where it's one of those things you don't talk about. Suicides happen left and right but there's such pressure to blend in that you just don't talk about any mental issues you may have because it could lead to losing jobs/friends/etc. Last I heard in South Korea (this was a few years ago) people had just started to accept therapists as something 'normal' and seek them out. Before that, there wasn't much in the way of therapy and probably close to the same in medication.

But like I said, this is South Korea and I'm just assuming that Japan would be similar since they both have high suicide rates and similar hierarchy in society along with the same sorts of social/family pressures.
>>
>>8811236
I think they are sort of pseudo-clinical. I'm in psychology and never really see them used except for in pop-psychology related things. Neurotypical has reached a level of legitimacy from autism related organisations as a correct way to refer to people who don't have an autism spectrum disorder (i.e. instead of something like "autistic people think differently to 'normal' people" you would say "think differently to neurotypical people"). I think its fair enough and meant to cut down on 'othering' people with developmental/autism spectrum disorders, although has a certain level of political correctness to it. But as with many things sjw people, mostly on tumblr, have run with it and (while im sure they are well intentioned) have no clue what they're on about.

So basically, they're "real" terms in regards to reporting and media etc, but I wouldn't quite class them as academic (although i think they are gradually being adopted)
>>
>>8805631
This is really lacking in any substance. I remember when the threads on here first started and the majority of the people on here thought menhera might be a fun way to help cope with their mental illness and the stigma attached.
>>
>>8811258

Huh.

I'm not autistic so forgive my parsing of the word, but wouldn't neurotypical vs neurodivergent be other-ing anyways? If you take off the "neuro" aspect you get "typical" which for many people has the connotation of "normal." So now we're back to square one with how do we term people without "othering " them.

I mean whatever offends people the least I guess but a rose by any other name is still a rose and masking it with a term, particularly that one doesn't seem to do anyone any favors.

That and technically anyone with any neuro disorder could call themselves neurodivergent. But that's just me being not picky.

>inb4 autist insult
>>
>>8811265

>that's just me being nit picky

Goddamn autocorrect nit is a word too.
>>
>>8811265
it seems kind of.. disrespectful to treat them in the same way, like as if they were neurotypical, because in a way that's erasing their experiences and how they process the world. othering isn't always a bad thing

with many people like that (especially with developmental disorders), their goal is not 'recovery' or to seamlessly blend in or be neurotypical, they just want some degree of functionality and to be accepted
>>
>>8811265
Yeah I'm with you on that. Whatever those involved prefer i guess, but at the end of the day its got the same meaning. I suppose people just prefer it to "normal" because generally normal is seen as good and anything else is seen as bad or wrong.
>>
>>8811262
I'm not really into gurokawaii (not a guro person at all) but yeah, I took one look at menhera and went "This is actually pretty neat" because it does sort of banish that stigma that you have to treat your issues like a dirty little secret. It's not glorifying mental illness or anything like that, it's just bringing the issue to the forefront and making it hard to ignore.

I was wondering, would shironuri work well with menhera? also, is it strictly necessary to wear pastel colors for a coord to be menhera? I'm more interested in white/red/black palettes, since pastels tend to look terrible on me. I love them, but for some reason I feel like an overgrown child when wearing them
>>

I'd love to see shironuri blended with menhera themes! Menhera is just medical themes mixed with cute and cute doesn't necessarily mean pastel colored.

I personally wouldn't mind someone have a taxidermist make something of their dead pets (some accessories maybe, like darlingdeadadornment or others like that) but I don't think it would work with gurokawaii or menhera, they definitely look better with goth/dark/witchy outfits.
The anon in that thread mentioned "getting a pet and waiting for it to die of natural causes" (as in taking care of it and just wait), which sounds pretty creepy to me (I mean having a pet and "honouring" it after its death its a thing but getting one because you plan on making accessories... it could have been just a misunderstanding). Also got irritated when someone told them that that kind of jewellery doesnt work with this style, they were all around pretty unpleasant desu

I remember being in that thread and I didn't say anything at the time but... I'm just the kind of person that accepts death. My best friend was murdered in second grade. I just know that people are gonna die, and that my pets are gonna die too.
I don't go in thinking "can't wait for this cat to die so I can keep it forever" - that would be silly. And maybe that is what that person meant, but when I read their comment the first time, I didn't see the problem cause I get where they're coming from. If I could have at least one of my cats taxidermied, I would.
When II've and no longer have a stupid landlord and I can have a cat again, I'm gonna get one and no with the intention of waiting for it to die, but I will know that like, in 20 years it's gonna have to be down or what have you.

I don't think it's creepy to know that death is inevitable. I think it's silly to not accept that it will happen eventually and that you shouldn't plan for death because what about living?!
Things are alive right now and one day they won't be. That's just how it is.
>>
>>8820128
I dont think its that. There is a difference between getting a cat and accepting that it will one day die, and getting a cat and basically waiting for it to die because your intention in getting it was to taxidermy it
>>
>>8820128
I get the appeal of taxidermy (of pets, not of wild animals), but I don't think I could ever deal with it. I have a few hamsters who I love to absolute death, and I know they're most likely going to pass within the next year/year and a half, and I could never handle seeing them taxidermied...but I'm an emotional little bitch when it comes to pets, so that's really just me.

I like the idea of honoring death, which I'll probably do via burying them in a potted plant (most likely mint, chamomile, sunflower, dandelion, cornflower, something hamsters can eat and enjoy, as a a means of coping with the fact that losing one will mean I can save another)

I'd honestly think it's fucking weird to see somebody use their own pet as an "accessory", though. Or considering the idea, "Hmm, maybe I'll use their dead body as fashion accessories later." Seems a little fucked up.
>>
>>8820432
Yeah but a lot of pets can live for 20+ years. You can't wait for something to die for 20 years, other stuff is gonna happen and you're not gonna remember 20 years from now that you wanted to include your dead pet in a coord. Unless you purposely don't care of your pet and that would be animal abuse in which case, that's wrong and you shouldn't get a pet to ignore it until it dies, but that should go without saying.

>>8820455
I'm a little bitch too and cry over everything. Especially animals, I prefer them to people.
Wearing a dead pet as an accessory is pretty out there but I used to hang out with a kid that kept a mummified cat on his mantle. He put tie on it once and a cigarette in its mouth. Thought it was pretty amusing.. but to have a cat skull on a necklace or something, it'd be pretty big and when you told someone what it was, you'd get quite the reaction I'm sure but I wouldn't have a problem with it.
There are some people that wear like cattle skulls as hats. I think it looks pretty cool.

Gurokawaii is "a j-fashion" - I think this is a big misunderstanding with people outside of Japan. It isn't "a" fashion, it's not even really a buzzword, it's just an adjective for describing a certain look or feel. Same with menhera etc. There's a tendency for fans of Japanese pop culture to try to make something concrete out of something quite fluid and abstract.

I do taxidermy as a hobby (mainly bone articulation and wet specimens).

Personally, it depends on the "type" of pet for me. I could never work on my cats, but I have my pet rats (who I absolutely adored as much as my cats) in my freezer to eventually preserve (not for a coord or anything).

I still haven't figured out the thought process in regards to it, but the concept of working on my pet rats as opposed to my cats, doesn't upset me nearly as much, despite caring for them immensely.

I do know some in my community who have preserved their larger pets, but mainly for memorial, I've never seen them used for anything but.

Yeah I kinda agree with this.
Like, it can be gothic with blacks and reds, or it can be a bit fairy kei:ish with pastels and such, or even something else, like >>8830668 as long as it has a creepy look to it.
>>
>>8830721
Maybe it's because you sort of accept that rats will only live for a very short time, so you sort of want to hold onto them a little more. I felt the same about my rabbit, I still cry thinking about him and he died two years ago.
Catskull was messed up though. I can understand getting animals taxidermied to remember them but seriously? Buying a cat so you can wait for it to die and wear it? That's beyond screwed up. Guro and menhera aren't about wearing literal remains, at least not ones that big or which were reared for that specific purpose.
(Sorry about your rats by the way.)
