Shoutout to armored Undyne edition.

Old thread >>8795103

What's everyone working on? How many Frisks will we see at every con this year? Going to a con soon? Dont forget to take pictures of Undertale cosplay and share it here! (so we can talk shit)

I'll going to work in this armor too, nobody did it, at least, a good one.

The pic you have is her genocide armor though. I think OPs pic looks reasonably like Undyne's normal armor. Its pretty difficult to translate a sprite into a cosplay, anyway.

I would love to see one of her genocide armor, though.

That frisk in the background looks adorable af. Also what is up with all the fatties? I get that the game panders to tumblr but jesus fuck.

That's just how cosplay is nowadays. You get the "cosplay whoever you want!" stuff and a lot of people interpret it as "I can wear whatever I want" without a care about how it fits or if maybe that one other character might be a tiny bit more suitable.

And well, Undertale is popular/soup du jour right now so of course you're going to get a lot of people cosplaying, which increases the chances of fat cosplayers as well.

As for what I'm working on, just finished making a totebag (messenger bag?) for my Alphys. Pretty content with it.

Someone posted this in the last thread and now I kind of want to cosplay this interpretation of Napstablook. I'm just not sure about the hair. Does anyone know what kind of style would be good for it?
>>
>>8804953
Would the scarf be big enough to wrap around my body or should I wear a sweater dress underneath?
>>
>>8804954
Just go for something simple, minimal styling.
>>
>>8804961
I would use an oversized scarf, but still having a sweater on underneath. Maybe just black, or a color close to the hair? Up to you. But yeah, I think trying to deal with a scarf wrapping around your whole body wouldnt be manageable, you'd be adjusting it all day.

Thats super cute! I like it! Make sure you have the beanie/hat though.
>>

Undyne's normal armor is grey, and genocide armor is black, I though it's the genocide because that. With grey color would be nice normal armor.
>>
>>8804805
>>8804794
I was actually planning on doing Genocide Undyne some time soon. I've never made armor before though so it'll probably be a while before it's done. The main thing I'm unsure about doing is her eye.
>>

Ah right I forgot to add that in. Thank you! I think I'll go with this. With that set in stone, any recommended knitting tutorials for sweater dresses?

Anon from last thread going with the Chara hoodie idea, I'm thinking of small details to work into the cosplay. Like the rosey cheeks Chara has, though I have them naturally it looks too red to me.

It's not so hard. Try this, its what a few of us are using to knit our sweaters http://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter04/FEATknitbynumbers.html

How would you go about making flowey's face? I'm using one of those long bendable fake flowers(plastic not cloth) as a base and I'm wondering how to construct the face.
>>
>>8805173
If you want to be the realest Frisk/Chara then you should build the flower around a screen that plays an animation with a periodically changing face.

Or you could make it out of craft foam and paint it. Add layers to create depth for his eyes and mouth.

I see a lot of Charas wearing shorts or shorts with leggings. I get that it would work with Frisk but Chara is shown wearing pants. Is it based off of fanart or something?
>>
>>8807604
I assume so, yeah. Most of tumblr thinks playing a genocide run makes you a real life sociopath who should be in prison and won't do it so they're going based on "chara is a frisk recolor" designs.

>>8807604
I think it was based off the sprite. You cant really see Frisks legs in the tiny sprite, so I guess shorts+leggings is a logical conclusion.

Personally Im going to wear just shorts when I do Frisk, because shorts are comfy and easy to wear (and its hot where I live).

So for Mettaton..
How should one tackle the neck/collarbone area?
Usually people either paint it silver with the panels, or just wear a black turtleneck.
The silver might be more accurate but how bad does paint get on the wig..?
I'm just at a loss.

Papyrus cosplayers: cape or scarf?
>>
I really want to attempt a Mettaton EX cosplay for the next big con in my area; Sakuracon (March 25-27)

I have nothing set up for it yet, but my biggest concern is my "shape" i guess. I'm a dude, but not that big, so I think It'll work out. I see mostly girls cosplay Mettaton and I get a lil worried that It'll look like shit.
Any good workout advice to get a nice lookin' tumtum, ass & legs?
Anything that other Mettaton cosplayers do that I shouldn't?
>>
>>8807914
Look up drag queen padding. They basically make foam cutouts to pad the hips/ass/thighs.
Don't do that weird black-upper-lip thing.

Sage for ot
>>
>>8807914
2nd padding your butt and hips. If you want to dedicate yourself to a life of squats thats cool too, but you'll likely still need to pad to get a nice shape.

Also learn how to walk in heels. I know youre a guy and it's not a skill you use often, but you dont want to look a mess and be tripping over yourself all day.
>>
>>8807709
Both
>>
>>8807914
If you do the padding thing, get yourself 4 or 5 pairs of leggings/pants/tights for it. One under your pads, then the others over it to smooth it out and make it look uniform.

Seconding the practice thing. Practice heels (start slow, half an hour, next day an hour and so on). Practice stairs in heels, trust me, it sounds dumb but you'll thank yourself. Practice Mettaton-mannerisms, look up some glam-rockers and see how they do. You can look perfect but if you'll stand around like a shy wallflower it'll ruin it.

Maybe obvious ones but get a wig. Style it or get it styled. I'm going to make assumptions but depending on your level of make-up, get help there as well. If you can do that by yourself, then disregard. Practice the make-up at least once beforehand.
>>
>>8807914
>>8808186
Oh and I was going to say I would go for a chunkier heel on the boot. IMO women can pull off stilettos because A) they generally walk in heels better and B) they have smaller figures, but as a guy and someone new to walking in heels, you'll want a thicker heel for the stability. They'll be hevaier and they'll probably tire you out, but just practice and you'll be fine

This is solid advice. Try Googling gogo boots for shoes. Left ones would be a very good beginner heel, the right ones would probably end you at a con. Of course, that's all up to your level of experience.

I'm a girl, so I guess height isn't an issue. But I always think of Toriel being fairly tall, anyway.

And well, alright! I'll put it on my list. The thing is that I don't exactly know how her hair would translate into that kind of costume. White, straight wig with the ears and horns attached to it...?
>>
>>8809749
You might think her taller than she is because she's an adult to Frisk's childness? It's true that in the game she's one of the bigger characters, but translating that into real life she'd probably just be an average height. Then again, they're sprites, where proportions are a lot harder to figure out.

People seem to use short wigs a lot for Toriel, and I guess that's because her floppy ears are more of an attention point. I'd personally go with a "mom" haircut, all things considered.

While on the topic of prosthetics, I have a bit of a question. Sorry if it's been asked before -- new to the thread and the game -- but I've been thinking of doing an Undyne cosplay down the road and was wondering if anybody had success getting rid of their nose for it? Like that flat fish-like appearance? I know art style is one thing and it could translate horribly irl but I'd be interested to see cosplays that actually took it to that level and if they were successful or not.

Other than that requesting just great Undyne's in general -- OP looks really good.

go for it, but it'd probably be hard to find an old dress that's both the right colour and big enough to fit round a costume

making something fit decently is the hardest part of sewing clothing from scratch, which wouldnt be a problem with a box. difficulty might vary depending on the design.
>>
>>8810634
thrift stores. Trust me you will find big dresses there. Maybe not blue, but have seen a few metas in wedding dresses and thrift stores have a ton of those. Also you could always just add some extra straps in the back and leave it unzipped to fit, or ribbon tied into bows. I cheated and did this for my friend who couldn't fit into my alphys dress, I had added ribbons to the sides because it was too big and planned to tie the extra back, well we ended up using the ribbon and safety pins to hold the back closed for her under the lab coat.

(Pardon the decopic filter)

Mostly finished my Mettaton EX costume, but I have one problem I'm not entirely sure how to solve. As you can see in the picture, my bodysuit's sleeves have a bad tendency to wrinkle which breaks the illusion of metal. They don't do this when my arms are straight, but I figure more often than not I won't be holding them rigidly so that's a bit useless. I tried tightening them so they'd cling better, but it didn't work as well as I wanted it to. I also need to get the black lines on them but probably not until I've solved this issue first.

Does anyone who has made bodysuits/sleeves before have advice to get rid of the wrinkles? I can get over it if there's no good solution, but it'd be nice for them to look smooth. Thanks in advance!

This actually makes me curious, have people done costumes for all MTT forms at this point?
>>
>>8811558
Maybe add some thin interfacing? Maybe not to the elbow areas, but to the upper arm and forearm parts. It may make your arms a bit awkward to move but it should help with the wrinkling.
>>
>>8811570
That's plausible! The only thing I'd be concerned about is taking away the stretch of the fabric, but maybe I'll test it on some scrap pieces first. I hadn't even thought of that, thanks for the suggestion.
>>
>>8811582
Np! Costume is looking good so far!
>>
>>8811558
maybe if instead of full interfacing, you could make "tube" pieces inside the sleeve? I don't know..

Maybe another way to do Mettaton's arms would be a black sleeve with silver pieces over it, so you keep mobility and your arms look like they are made of pieces ?

That's something I considered as well, I think I'm going to try both the interfacing and the tube ideas.

As for the silver on black method, while I see the logic I don't have much time to redo them entirely (I head back to college in a couple of days and will be there until just before the convention). My other thought was getting some kind of fabric/puff paint type thing (preferably not puff paint but you get the idea) and simply paint the lines on carefully, but again I need to experiment with it.

I'd really like to do it, but lord knows my tailoring skills aren't high enough to make shoulders like that look good, much less a sharp well-fitting blazer. How should I go about making this better? Like maybe sand it more to make it look smoother? And how should I go about making one of the eyes glow? Like any cool techniques you guys can throw my way?
>>
>>8812027
put something over the styrofoam to smooth it out. Since youve already carved in the face fabric is out of the question, but it needs something to give it more texture. Think of what a skull looks like, it doesnt look smooth as a baby's bottom and shiny white. Its a dull ivory, it has bumps, it's imperfect.

I'm sure there are some textured paints (probably house paints rather than craft paints) that could give you some nice textures. But youll have to seal it first, paint probably won't stick well on styrofoam. You'll have to ask someone else what would be best as a sealer because Im not sure. But make sure to seal the paint also.

As for the light I would recommend EL wire, its super light, durable and even flexible, and comes in several sizes. Easy to attach to stuff. EL wirecraft is a great distributor, but since you only need a few inches, you might have to custom order from them, as their smallest premade size is 1m. (I'm imagining the rim of the eye lighting up, if you just wanted to do the center you'd probably just need a single light, but Ive never done something like that in a project so Im not sure how it would work).
>>
>>8812061
Gah, I shouldnt have said 'to smooth it out' in the first sentence, I contradicted myself later on. Ignore that. Sorry, im typing half asleep.
>>
>>8812027
>>8812061
You can paint it with a bunch of thin layers of wood glue and you can even sand it a bit after that. I guess you can use gesso too but I personally don't like the stuff.
>>
>>8812067
Gesso would actually work pretty well if anon stippled it on in layers with a sponge brush. It builds up a fine texture really quickly that way, looks more like bone and less like styrofoam.
>>
>>8812061
perhaps he could use acrylic putty or other materials like it.

I'd also recommend EL wire or EL tape, in fact, you can find discs of it on ebay, with charger and cables.

Anon could buy a blue disc and stick it inside the head.

I'm pretty much done with the body of my sweater, going to knit maybe one or two more rows of blue since I dont want the pink right at the armpit. Otherwise I am pretty proud of myself considering I only started this about a week and a half ago.
>>

Looks good! I love seeing Frisks/Charas knitting their own sweaters, it usually looks so much better than the alternatives some people come up with.

I'm despairing hard on my own costume, I'm the Alphys-anon that posted some of my WIP in the previous thread. I just need to finish the eyes and teeth and the face would be pretty much done, but I absolutely CANNOT get the teeth to look right. Whatever idea I come up with ends up looking either too ridiculous and goofy, or too creepy. Normal fursuit tutorials for teeth also don't help me at all since they're practically all for realistic cat/dog teeth. If anyone knows some last ditch tutorial or inspiration (doesn't have to be from Alphys fursuits even!), feel free to help out.

Determination is slipping.
>>
>>8812495
Yeah, I considered going the sweatshirt with stripes sewed on but I really prefer the sweater look since the stripes are seamless. I'm knitting a Chara sweater once I finish this one up.

Oh I love your progress pics! Dont lose hope, you can do it! I wish I could help but I'm not much of a fursuiter at all. Just keep looking at different suits you'll find youre inspiration. Just got to stay determined!

You're in luck, I'm the one who posted that link and I just got mad at mistakes in my sweater and frogged it down to the armpits.
The tutorial says stitch holders but I used lengths of yarn to hold the stitches on the body and each sleeve so my needles were out of the project.
Then whatever 8% of my chest number was, I took a different colored piece of yarn and used it to hold that number of stitches on opposite sides of the body piece (exactly opposite sides, I counted). Then I took another 2 pieces of yarn to hold the same number of stitches on each sleeve. At this point the body piece had one large stitch holder yarn piece all the way around it and 2 smaller pieces on either side and the sleeves had one large yarn piece holding all the stitches with one small length holding stitches.
After that, take the sleeves and match their small stitch holders up to the small ones on the body. Pick up all the other stitches with your needles to the whole outside of the sweater is back on the needles but the armpits aren't on anything. Once it's all on the needles take the long stitch holders out (being careful not to pull off the small stitch holders.
Knit a couple rows and start the raglan decreases.
I'm only 3 rows in and too tired to work on it more so if that doesn't make sense I can rip it back up and show what to do in a video or something.
>>
>>8813662
Ohgoodlordthankyou.

That makes a lot more sense (though a video would be awesome anon). I was just hella confused as to what the hell I was doing with the stitch holders. Hopefully I should be able to get this. Gotta knit up my sleeves first though.

Now time for a round of 'oh my god I hate the first row of knitting on circular needles'
>>
>>8813477
Yeah I'm feeling bad about my sewn frisk cosplay too. I'm learning to knit now so if I manage to not screw up I should be able to make it before the con.

I seem to have some issues with either tension or size of needles/yarn because the first test I did was looked so big even though I did a really small piece
>>
>>8813727
There are still good sewn sweaters out there!
Tip for knitting though, never go with the thing on the yarn package that says "1 inch is x many stitches with whatever size needles". It's always wrong. Just knit like 6 rows of 20 stitches and use a tape measure to see how many stitches you personally put in an inch.
I hate doing this because I feel like I'm throwing away time and effort making a dumb piece of knitting that isn't going to get used but in the end it really helps.
>>
>>8813727
Dont feel bad anon, every ones gotta make their cosplay their own way.

The size of needle you'll need for yarn is usually on the yarn label. So that helps. And tension mostly takes practice. Starting with scarves is great since it gets you used to it and controlling your tension, plus they are super easy.

So I recently made a gasterblaster for Sans, but I'm not sure what to do to smooth out the surface of the skull. It's made of cardboard, model magic, paper mache, and acrylic paint. What can I do to get rid of the paper mache lines and bumps?
>>
>>8814457
I know you can sand paper mache CAREFULLY but only if you have enough layers. You might have just one or two?

You could put Bondo over it, or whatever other brand of car spot filler you can find. It hardens real hard and is sandable as well, plus it'll give you a nice fortification! If you go that route, try to get it on in small layers and to smooth it out while it's workable.

Whatever eventual solution you find, it'll involve covering what you have with more stuff I'm afraid.
>>
Curious what you guys think: do you guys prefer Sans's hood as a gray hood or a blue hood with white fur on it? I think the fur looks better for cosplay, but the sprite really looks like it's just a different color rather than fur.
>>
>>8814778
I'm personally more of a fan of the gray hood because those two toned sports hoodies seems like something Sans would wear (along with his basketball shorts) but I wouldn't say a fur trimmed hood would look bad.

>>
>>8816060
Shoot, I guess I should add that my main question is whether or not my lips look okay without lipstick or accents, and whether or not I should contour more.
>>
>>8816060
I'm no makeup expert but I really like the overall look. Masc MTT looks so much better and it's a shame most people do the stupid lip thing.

Also afaik people don't mind if you selfpost if you're upfront about it and not just dropping your pic in here for compliments.
>>
>>8816060
Its not a bad start anon but you just need some practice.

First add some definition to your lips, I'm glad you didnt do the whole half lip thing, but as is you look a bit washed out. A bit ombre to your lips with a darker grey might be good, anything that makes them stand out just a bit from the rest of your face.

Overall your lines are pretty messy, dont be afraid to use tape to get smooth straight lines. Maybe use a higher quality product for your black lines, the color looks a bit inconsistent in places, especially around the blank eye.

As for your eye make up and eyebrows, look up some youtube tutorials for crisp lines, or good cat eye, you can apply the techniques to get a nicer finish on what you have going.

It's not bad, and I like the design you have going a lot! Just practice it a few more times and you'll get there!
>>
>>8816060
your eyebrows are looking a bit powder-y so i would say comb your eyebrows with mascara after your makeup is done so they are as black as your wig. also maybe put a nice medium gray tone on your bottom lip. otherwise its pretty good!
>>
>>8816060
This is a good start anon. I like that wig.
If you're going for more sprite accuracy, you should probably do 2 eyebrow bolts instead of 3. I also think it would look good with a slightly droopy eyeliner.

I'm hoping to do Mettaton EX one day, and NEO the next. It would probably be cheapest the same wig for both and just style the bangs differently, but I can't really understand his hair, much less what wig would work for it. Is it like, a mullet with a large front bang? What kind of wig would even work for it?

And as for NEO, do people interpret his "cape" as an actual physical thing, or as the glow from stage lights in his shoulder armor? I'll probably end up using banks of LEDs and then some kind of large sheets of... Something. I have no idea what material would work best.

Should the NEO armor be based on the same colors as EX? He'd definitely still have the flashiness, if not moreso.

Magnum from Arda is often used for Mettaton. The only problems are that the bangs aren't as long as I'd like and the back needs a slight trim.

You can try making the light-cape an actual object, but I imagine that'd be hard to maneuver. The few NEOs I have seen usually just rig a bunch of lights in there.

The problem with NEO is that we have no idea what colors he has, so you have a bit of creative liberty here. Some people also make him completely black, to match the battle sprite.

I think the work they did is great, but for some reason I hate the knitted sweaters. I just think they're so ugly...

Are you joking?
Those fins are ridiculous, the teeth are ridiculous, the clothes are ridiculous, the wig is stupid as hell.
>>
>>8817414

Out of everything in that cosplay, I like the ridiculous teeth. Undyne isn't supposed to be pretty, I think. I see her having like... snarly fucked up anglerfish teeth.
Pic related for one of my most liked interpretations for Undyne, even if it's hard to go that far with teeth irl.

lips are terrible, eyebrow is terrible, white eyelashes(?) are terrible. I like the little bit of blue worked into the paneling shading, but other than that, this is a hot mess.

I feel like this thread and the steven universe thread have become nothing but two fights:
>You like that? Your taste is shit.
>What are you, autistic? It's good!
and
>You hate that? Your taste is shit.
>What are you, autistic? It sucks!
And no one ever says anything of value

I don't know about SU, but we do have some sustenance here. Some people go into detail about why something is shit, which I'd consider better than just saying "but it's bad"

We get Cringey Mettatons all the time, but this time it's a full video. I can't be forced to suffer through this alone, seagulls. I just can't.

Really nice.

Didn't last past 15 seconds. The voice hurt me.

So I'm actually thinking about cosplaying pic related. Don't know the first thing about furry cosplay so any tips, advise, and ideas would be appreciated.
>>
>>8818212
Furry dog heads are in ridiculous abundance so you have plenty of reference. You'll probably want to go for a simpler mascot-head sort of shape, but fursuit tutorials help a lot with the foam carving and covering it in fur.

It'd be easiest to just make a head and the paws rather than a full-body outfit.

Oh man I was actually thinking about doing a couples cosplay of these guys, too. Does anyone know whats actually on their shirts?
