I haven't seen a thread like this in a while, but what are some rarely-cosplayed pieces of media that you wish had more attention in the community? What about characters (from popular or unpopular series) that you'd like to see more of?
For me, it's Rhyhm Heaven. I love the series and think it has a lot of potential for cute cosplays but I've never seen much from it.
Characters from bemani games (iidx, pop'n, DDR, sdvx, etc.)

Nadia Secret of Blue Water (the whole cast not just nadia or jean)
I really want the last one, but the show is over 25 years old now and is not that memorable to most people besides the fact the main character is black. I can dream though.

There are so many options and Sandman cosplayers tend to stick to the basics.

Rune Factory or Harvest Moon characters. I grew up on Harvest Moon, and goddamn, I want to see more people cosplaying them. All I ever see, which is still rare in the first place, are shitty PCs/OCs and fucking Karen.

Conan! I realize that it's not a great series for cosplaying (mostly casual outfits and few signature ones, characters are defined mainly by facial features) but I love it so and I've seen a total of one cosplay from it. It would be especially awesome if parents who want their kids to cosplay could do some Conan; it's cute, not overly costumey and uncomfortable to wear, got plenty of kids and adults interacting, and even if most kids probably shouldn't read the books they can still sympathize with "kid detective".

Honestly anything, game or anime, from the late 90s to mid 2000s that aren't from series that got hugely popular and are still regularly cosplayed like Bebop. Eva, or old FF. Those were the greatest years for anime and J-RPGs but they were also the years cosplay was in its baby stage. There weren't as many resources so you had a lot of inaccurate footwear, cheap wig or spray dye, and bad fabric choices. I'd LOVE to see a lot of that stuff redone with today's resources and standards.

Far Cry 4. The downside is that there are not a lot of characters, but the characters that are there are interesting. Good for people of many races (lots of POC characters) and women who want to look badass. However some of the costumes can get a bit complicated (Pagan Min, Noore) but theyre cool costumes.
Fucking great game, too.
I know it's a weird game and not that well-known outside the BL genre but I still liked it. But knowing the horrendous yaoi community, I think it's better for me to dream than actually see it in person.

You could cosplay one of the missionaries in their 'Turn It Off' outfits, with the sparkly vest! There's also the all-white costumes from 'I Am Africa', and the rock and roll backup missionaries from 'Man Up'
I think Cunningham and McKinley are the more recognizable of the three lead missionaries, so if you don't do a general costume it's really down to them. For Cunningham you could wear a Star Wars backpack and carry a Book of Arnold, and McKinley you could obviously do the vest and maybe also his frilly pink suitcase from near the end of the show.

There was a killer group of Nichijou cosplayers last year at Anime Midwest (Yuuko, Mio, & Mai) and I just about cried when I saw them. Their cosplays were flawless and I wish I got a better picture.

Do you guys think it's bad to cosplay a character from a series that you haven't fully seen? I really like some of the characters I've seen here and would want to cosplay them, but I don't know if I want to commit myself to the whole series (or if I'll even like it). Do you think doing in-depth research on the character and having a basic knowledge of the series is enough, or should I fully commit to a series I want to cosplay from?

As long as you get enough of the major references/characteristics/ understand the role of your character you'll probably be OK. It's unlikely that you'll get a turbo-nerd giving you a pop quiz, though people cosplaying as other characters from the series might copy some meme-ful dialogue with you or something like that.
A few years ago I made the mistake of cosplaying as a character I had no idea about, I didn't even watch the series. Needless to say, I disappointed several crowds of people when they asked me to do a characteristic laugh - something I would have known if I watched the series for a single episode

I honestly wish RPDR cosplay was a thing. There are so many iconic looks if it was done well anyone who's seen the show could recognize them.
I haven't been to any cons recently, but as a longtime fan of Monolith Soft and their associated series (Xeno/Chrono/Baten Kaitos) and Kunihiko Tanaka's character designs, if I see anyone doing Xenoblade X at Anime Boston this year I will buy them a drink on the spot.

I'd really like to see more Suikoden cosplayers. The series has hundreds of characters to choose from their designs can suit pretty much any level of cosplayer - there are a lot of outfits ranging from basic adventurer style to incredibly intricate.
I'd love to see the FF:CC spin-offs get more love. They're Final Fantasy games, so the designs are good, and there's a lot of diversity in them too. The main FF games aren't the only good ones, people.
