I want to like this but something about it bothers me, and I think it's a combination of little things. If people think it's blocky, it usually means that the color is poorly balanced. For example, there, it is pretty much a white/ivory block sandwiched between two red/dark blocks.

It does look nice with the coord but seeing all 3 in a row, it's less 'a fresh retro take on lolita' to me now and going right into 'it's not a take, it's just plain just retro'. How many likes I get isn't really something I have control over. Honestly I think the main reason I got so many likes is just because it's Christmas and it was a very red coord. Actually, I didn't think this would matter so much in lolita because what are the odds your blouse is gonna be the same fabric of your dress unless you're a giant ita who put on normal clothes over a petti.
As far as I know, all of this stuff comes in different fabrics. As for what the girl in question did - how do you avoid doing something like this when it's cold? because you're gonna want to bundle up some of the most similar fabrics for warmth, yeah?
Looking at it, she could definitely improve the colors and where they are, but everything here seems to match, and as far as different fabrics, she's definitely only wearing AP so it's very likely the tights and the blouse are the same fabric, but I don't know why that would be a faux pas.

Even if your main pieces are the same texture you can add accessories/layers to make it a little more interesting. That's one of my favorite parts of the fashion (or fashion in general actually) but it's probably something that takes a while to master.
