Honestly, I love simple coords. I only wear simple stuff that often gets labeled a too plain or too boring. I try to achieve something closer to a wearable-everyday, dressed-up "normal" fashion; think something like fannyrosie. I mean this is a fashion and not a costume, so why do Lolita shit on simple coords so much?
I once went out with a girl in OTT sweet, and I was utterly embarrassed to be with her when people were asking her why she was dressed that way and her having to explain that "it's a Japanese fashion." I agree compleatly. I feel like what makes a coord look like a costume the most are the stupid fucking wigs. It never pases for real hair, they make the infamous game of thrones for the first couple of season wigs look amazing by comparison. And that's usually what makes people think it's a costume, the obvious synthetic wig that makes their head look big.
Personally I never get asked why I'm dressed the way I do, if I'm in a play etc which seems common in my comm. I definately get comments on my clothes but no one ever assumes it's a costume. Most girls in my comm dress fairly simple on a day to day basis, the only difference is they wear a wig and they get the costume comments pretty often.

I wear wigs, but only natural colored ones. The one I wear frequently is actually similar to my natural hair color. I only wear it because I have very fine and very thin hair that doesn't like to stay curled. It's a battle every time I need to do something with it, so I just think wearing a wig is easier.

Except when you have this going on, (not me, but a picture that shows my level of thinning) and the only way you can get your hair looking halfway decent is pulled up into a thin depressing ponytail or wearing a hat (which is fine, but not what I want to do all the time). I wasn't really talking about pastel wigs. Even natural colored wigs end up looking like a costume (who even wears pastel ones anymore?) is just cheap synthetic wigs in general. In this thread there's a fair amount of both wig and no wig so it's easy to see my point I hope.
I think the problem is mostly coming from people getting wig advice from cosplayers. The kind of wig that is good enough for cosplay doesn't pass for real hair IRL. Lolita's are awful at wigs, I don't know why they can't invest in a decent natural one that passes for real hair.
And honestly thin hair is not that bad, you could get extentions, or layer it, find the right priducts to style it. IMO it's definitely better than an obvious wig. but that's just my opinion.

However I will say that for very Ott styles, Ott hair does tend to look better. And that's usually better achieved with wigs. If you're gonna go all impractical and costumume-ish you might as well go all out. My annoyance is more over the basic, everyday look with a wig.

To the normal person, the last thing they're going to ask about is the wig, especially if it's natural. I've gone out in fake as fuck hair before and have had lots of people asking if it was my real hair, but I've gotten more questions about toned down outfits with normal hair. I was only asking because I was posted on here. And I am one of the girls in a picture you didn't like. Not offended or anything, but I will take it into consideration in the future. I would prefer to wear my natural hair out straight, but it just ends up looking limp and lifeless. I like a slight curled or wavy look to my hair, but it's hard to achieve that. I've never seen this happen before, but I'm new to the community so I have a lot of catching up to do. I do see a lot of comments like "This is an ok coord. It isn't anything special or great, it's just ok." A lot of that is used to describe simple coords like some of the ones posted here.
It was my observation that CoF girls LOVE and fawn over all the OTT stuff, which I personally hate because it's just too costume like.

The picture you attached with your comment is a beautiful example of a tone down, simple coord that I think even normal people can like and would find acceptable. Well, I can agree that it could pass as "normal" but people will still inevitably ask her why she's dressed up or where she's going, it's still not under the radar.
But the entire point I was trying to make was why are so many lolitas desperate to please normalfags? Even if you're wearing a neon duct tape suit, you're still yourself. Drawing attention to yourself isn't pleasant, but if wearing the clothes you love isn't worth it to you, you shouldn't change your style just for that. And you shouldn't suggest anyone else do it either.

In my local comm (and I'm sure others as well) as long as you're not totally fresh out of milanoo ita, they'll give you a chance. There's tons of overweight, possibly colorblind, or ridiculously tattooed girls in my comm and they're all friends with skinny brandwhores. Try finding a hair stylist how knows how to deal with thin hair. Both my mother and hair stylist have extremely thin hair. If the wind blows even slightly you'll see bald spots.
My mother got a specific type of layers suited for her face and hair and it made a huge difference. The only time I've heard her talk about products is to say that most products will just make your hair even more limp.

Imo, one of the big problems with wigs is the style of the bangs. In the pictures above, a big reason why the hair looks face is because of the side-swept bangs, they just don't look like they're coming from someone's scalp.

You're reading too much into this. The point of Lolita is that it's a fashion, so yeah, people are going to look at the way you look. When I go out by myself, I don't worry myself over what other people think of it or what I'm wearing because I like it and I am comfortable with it. When I started going to meets, I was concerned about fitting in with the rest of the Lolitas because I've heard that the community could be rough (ie, bitchy, judgmental, elitist, etc). Being nervous the first time is normal, isn't it? After my first meet though, I was fine. Everyone in my local comm is very nice and I really didn't have anything to worry about after all.

In most cases, a "haircut that adds volume and suits your face" is also short, and/or without a fringe. Having thin hair means that to have a decent blunt bang, I'd have to devote almost half of my hair to it.
So I don't.
The few times I've gone sans-wig and posted photos, I've had remarks that I would look better with longer hair and a blunt fringe, that it would be more lolita. Neither of these are possible with how thin my hair is. Hell, I can't even use a clip-in fringe without it being blatantly obvious it's fake, because the rest of my hair is so much thinner and finer.
You see the problem? Just because a haircut suits you doesn't mean it suits lolita. And when you have thinner hair, the result is often to sacrifice the typical "cute" styles and end up with something more mature or modern than works with lolita.

Some of them have light boning, however, and they almost always have some corset lacing in back. AatP and Baby sometimes sell similar stuff, and Excentrique also produces a variety of cuts of corset vests and bustiers.

Wear your natural hair out, and it's too thin for the hairstyle you chose? Get a better, more flattering style of cut.
Have a flattering, but short style of cut? Too boyish, wear it longer or get a wig.
Have a flattering cut, but no fringe? Not lolita, wear clip-ins or get a wig.

I know it's annoying lolita's will comment on short hairstyles without bangs no matter how flattering it is. I guess I'm just sad/bitter that that's one of the reasons people feel the need to wear wigs. I think less people would say such things if they were more used to seeing different hairstyles in lolita but that won't happen like this.

I've been taking vitamins, switched birth control to something with less androgens in it, keeping my hair short with as little heat treatment as possible and it seems to be helping a little bit since my hairline looks a little more filled in than it had been. But the center part still very thinned. I usually part from the side though where it's less terrible. At least it's not been worsening. For awhile, I had hair falling out in clumps especially while I was having some tooth trouble.
