With every special snowflake with a tumblr account trying to make up their own super cool new take on lolita fashion, I figure we should do it too!
Here what you do: take some stupid thing shit has nothing to do with lolita, and fucking make that shit lolita. Make coord collage and post it too.
You like hiphop? Well gangster lolita could be the next big thing!
Wear cutsews instead of blouses, sag your bloomers, find a kawaii snapback and throw on every piece of brand jewelry you own.
Who knows, your unique new style could be the next hit trend!

So I'm genuinely curious how a new substyle of Lolita comes about? Seems like it's an unspoken rule that if the Japanese didn't do it, it's just not allowed.

Pirate Lolita and Sailor Lolita both seem very costume-y to me because its very reliant on their themes. Somehow both of these are accepted as a substyle of Lolita almost without question.

The Gangsta Lolita style could just be a re-vamp of the now defunct Punk Style. And I don't see anything wrong with a Chemistry Lolita if Pirate Lolita is allowed. Both are very costume-y and theme oriented.

Also, I'd like to state for the record that I care for none of these substyles, or whether they become a thing or not. I personally would never wear any of it, but what's wrong with other people experimenting with the fashion so long as the silhouette is correct? I would imagine that the current set of accepted substyles were deemed experiments in Lolita fashion before they became an accepted thing.

As an aside, I remember reading an interview about Minori where she stated that she did not feel that Lolita suited her, nor any of the prevailing j-fashion styles, so she came up with her own style. She felt it best represented who she was. Her style became what is now known as Shironuri, and it became a style other people wanted to emulate. I don't recall anyone giving her shit for starting her own style.
>>
>>8766090
Minori did not start shironuri, her style of shironuri is just the most popular at the moment.

>I'd like to state for the record that I care for none of these substyles

it's a fucking joke, nofun-chan
op literally says "special snowflakes"
>>
>>8766090
Because lolitas, out of all fashion styles that have been posted on this board, are the most rigid with their rules. It's entirely possible for experimental styles to look pretty good, but there is an overwhelming majority of lolitas who want to stick to "the rules" that whatever else someone tries will look "bad" and the majority will shit on it.

Most lolitas cant even get past the fact that sometimes people live in climates that are fucking hot and wearing a blouse under a dress with a petticoat and a wig would cause you to have heatstroke.

Lolitas are by far, the most uptight when it comes to fashion. Which is hilarious considering how ridiculous lolita fashion looks.
>>
>>8766137
Ok anon, OP isn't a fucking retard. They know what is posted in this thread is a joke, but they wanted to start a discussion that has to do with experimenting in lolita. Don't be dumb.

Finally a style that caters to the lolitas who just don't understand what everyone else has against office blouses and ballet flats; they have ruffles and bows guys isn't that automatically lolita?

Office lolita is a prim and comfort based substyle with minimal accessories and minimal ties to lolita in general. Many Itas have been spotted wearing office lolita already! So grab some sheer saggy pantyhose and jump on the bandwagon!

>Pirate Lolita and Sailor Lolita
That's because what we've seen of those themes go well with the overall aesthetic of lolita, and have become popular enough that they've been worn over again and again to have developed distinct and recognizable features that set them apart from other themed coords.Nurse I think is another example of this.

Shit like gangster and chemistry and all the other snowflake shit don't work because the aesthetics aren't that compatible and people don't make an effort to try to make them mesh. Themes that don't seem very lolita have been made into successful dresses in the past (Florence's Medicine Cabinet, Melty Sky, to some extent Nightmare Rising), but the aesthetics of the themes are always reinterpreted in a way that becomes more suitable for lolita.

We shit on themed coords most of the time because people try to shoehorn themes into coords without actually making sure it's lolita-appropriate.

>>
>>8766460
I think the ultimate test of whether a theme can stick or not is "romance". If you can think about dashing pirates or windswept sailors or a melancholy nurse, those are pretty straightforward "romantic" figures. If you think about a chemist or a "gangsta" in that strictly "classical Romance" way, it definitely doesn't feel right, it doesn't come naturally. That's not to say there can't be something romantic about those themes, but there would be an incredibly thin line between the effort required to make it work, and it feeling too "tryhard". Does that make any sense?

>>8766105
I think there was some miscommunication here. Probably on my part for bad wording.

I know that Shironuri was an already established thing before Minori came about, and that she did not "invent" it. The exact history though, I admit I don't know much about as I find her interesting as an artist, but I'm not particularly interested in the style itself. The article I read said she "reinvented" Shironuri with her style. So that is to say that she developed her own variation or interpretation of Shironuri by incorporating/using existing Shironuri elements within her personal style. The thing is, almost no one associates Shironuri now with what it was previously. If you Google "Shironuri", you get "Shironuri makeup" and "Shironuri Minori" as the top two search results. Googling "Shironuri" on it's own will yield image results of Minori and her styling of Shironuri, meaning that the current understanding of Shironuri style is often intermingled with Minori's personal style.

>Her style became what is now known as Shironuri, ...
What I meant here is that what people "now know" as Shironuri is most likely intermingled with Minori and much less of what it was before her.

Or I could still be wrong, but that was my understanding of it anyway. If anyone knows any more background on the history or where to point me, I'd love to read more about it.

>>
>>8766460
This is more or less the kind of response I was looking for. I forgot about the Nurse Lolita thing, and also hated it as it looked way more costume-y than Pirate ever could. Somehow that died out like Punk Lolita, but Pirate seems pretty steady? Also, I know there have been many attempts to mingle Steampunk and Lolita together, but I have never seen it become an accepted substyle. Chinese brands have even made a series of dresses specifically for a Steampunk Lolita style. Any takers on why this hasn't been accepted?

>>8767190
I like this answer very much. I have never thought about it in this "romantic" sense before.
>>
>>8767851
Good to know.

I found this synopsis: "It refers originally to the painted faces of the Geisha, Maiko and the performers at the Kabuki theaters. Also, in present day, it is the signature characteristic of one of the street fashions in Japan - Shironuri. Now then. The reason why I call it the makeup artist's dream is because the only real requirement of the makeup is the white base."

My (mis)understanding was that referring to (old) Shironuri meant it centered around old Japanese elements/themes/motifs like Geishas/kimonos and Kabuki theater/music as well. I also read somewhere that war and horror (?) was also a common "element", but that Minori draws her inspiration mostly from nature instead. Maybe "element" is not the best word for what I was trying to convey.

I do not want this thread to turn into a discussion about Shironuri/Minori. Sorry OP! I was only using her as an example.

>>8767908
The only reason pirate is still around is because of Alice and the Pirates. Likewise, sailor stuck around because it's a common trend in normie fashion and because brands like Meta have done multiple proper sailor collections (the rockabilly crossover probably helps). Nurse lolita has never had as much brand geared towards it. Steampunk might stick around if you either get a spinoff from a recognized brand that specifically themes their designs around it for it or if recognized brands start putting out multiple dresses for it every year or so.

Punk lolita was also tied to visual kei, I think? When that dropped in popularity, punk died. People don't want to be seen in a style that's passe.

That's interesting. I did mention before

>Seems like it's an unspoken rule that if the Japanese didn't do it, it's just not allowed.

So when you say "recognized" brand, do you mean the main Japanese brands? Because I think Classical Puppets did the steampunk Lolita line (correct me if I'm wrong), and they are pretty recognizable, but still it didn't really catch on.

I'm interested to see if this means that Lolita styles can only be influenced by what the big Japanese brands put out, or if brands (all brands) can be influenced to make stuff if Lolitas were free to express an interest in a certain style even if it's not popular?

Sorry if that sounds convoluted. I'm having a hard time with words lately it seems.
>>
>>8767839
Yeah, well, his camera person corrected him.
>>
>>8768016
Yeah, I mean brands that have community cachet, so BTSSB, AP, those ones. The Chinese ones don't have quite the level of brand awareness that the Japanese ones do, probably because the community is mostly weeaboo at heart. I mean, when people first get into lolita, it's the Japanese brands that they're dreaming about. That sets a precedent for consumer behavior and establishes the Japanese brands as tastemakers.

In normal fashion, you get a bit of a symbiotic relationship between designer and consumer. The designer designs things that they hope will sell and if the consumer bites, they do more of that thing until they can jump on another proto-trend. Applying this to lolita, on one hand you have designers setting trends by deciding which collections to put out every year and on the other you have the consumers voting with their wallet which leads to more unpopular styles shuttering - see how MMM is doing right now.

TL;DR - Brands are going to do what sells, which means they're probably not interested in going too niche in an already tiny niche. However, they're probably open to experimentation in order to find new trends, particularly if there's precedent for a certain look in normie fashion already. And if you had enough lolitas noticeably interested in steampunk, you'd probably get a brand designing more for that. Plus if a smaller Chinese lolita brand made mad bucks selling chemistry lolita, you can bet BTSSB would get in on it.

>>8769252
Btssb has done a few prints with an eastern european theme and they're really nice I'd love for peasant lolita to become a thing

way ahead of you, i've worn this with a few coords
>>

I like the sound of those three, but the dresses that anon posted in >>8768709 are pretty grim. maybe they look nicer irl but they all just look so dull there. To each their own, i guess

>>8769408
are those the red riding hood type ones? I thought they were cute but sort of too removed from eastern european stuff to properly count. Like i could kind of see where they were coming from but didnt really see anything to properly link it if that makes sense
>>
>>8769252
I saw a pic where two lolis in AatP Ragnarok had Tolkien-esque accessories and one had an elven sword. It looked pretty good.
>>
>>8770665
Oooh i would love lolita inspired by the Tolkien's works/legendarium!

>Imagine rich blues and reds in velvety material with metal motifs/accessories for dwarven themed ones
>and then giant beards

Regal or religious themed ops paired with armor pieces and devotional items.
Color pallet: white, gold, wine, emerald, etc.
For ott instead of scepters we bring pikes and halberds, or foils/swords for those who want something smaller.
Jeanne D'Arc is our Mana.
Meets usually start at a fencing club, then move to a teashop, and end with praying the rosary at a local cathedral.

I had kinda wanted to do something like this with Surface Spell Gothics Sword Saint. I made a shield brooch and added these cute buttons that had a flaming heart /sword motif to my small hairbows.

early art deco lolita

volumous dresses and trousers, shape based forms, heavy emphasis on lines, fur coats, oriental jewellery, be a Wiener Werkstätte brandwhore
accessories: dead soldier bf, homemade bullets, suffragette sash
activities: who can ice cupcakes with the finest erte drawings? who will create the best ballet russes themed coord?

Lumberjack Lolita: Bring out your old plaid jsks and combat boots, but coordinate them with rustic cable-knit tights, matching knit hats, axe and tree themed accessories, and a denim-blue blouse! Now 40% more lesbian!
Note: avoid treelitas and plantkin.

Another one :Quinceañera lolita is a youthful hime style featuring brighter colors and dark, curly hair. It has intense poof, lots of chiffon, and is almost always ott.
I'm thinking Meta probably has some stuff that's bright enough.

Oz-kei
>the overall style is to be head-to-toe in a lavish monocolor theme
>acceptable colors are bright vibrant jewel tones
>literally everything must match when suitable
>use different shades of the same color instead of a different color
>contact lenses, makeup, accessories and hair color included when needed
>glitter, velvets, sheen fabrics and so on are acceptable
>various clothing examples in pic
>hats and head accessories are very important
>for men and women, because anyone can be a citizen of Oz

Watching that movie always makes me wish I could live in Emerald City.

Angel/Demon Lolita
Angel Lolita featuring white with gold and sky blue accents. Wings with every cord.
Accessories could be things like harps and maybe arrows? Like Cupid arrows? Idk
Demon Lolita has similar themes like the cuts but with blacks and reds. You obviously need horns with demon Lolita.
Accessories can be things with upside down crosses and pentagrams.

>>
>>8773820
that sounds awesome, I love the idea of the lenses
I don't really think there needs to be a specific style for that though, all of the things you mentioned could work with demon Lolita
