I threw together some progress on Yamato no Kami Yasusada today. It turned out a lot better than I had expected it to for being all put together in a day. For the most part it was just a lot of practice getting used to my new serger. I know I am probably going to nix the Hakama, just because they were just an attempted made from some left over twill I had. But maybe they're salvageable.

Hopefully I can finish all the fabric stuff and start some armor work tomorrow.

Thanks for the valid criticism! I remade the jacket from the ground up with a better fabric and I made sure to buy enough to size the sleeves properly. My wig got here today and it needs a lot of styling but at least it isn't terrible out of the bag.

Working on my tusken raider cosplay.

I made one about 6 years ago and it fell into disrepair and the helmet pretty much fell apart to the plastic shell, which I've used to make a head for a Mardi Gras parade. So now I'm just trying to find a new shell or somehow make a copy of the inside of the Mardi Gras head.

I'm pretty much making my costume from scrap now and am in the planning phase

>>
>>8781461
Hey anon, I've been following your process with this thing and I have some tips I guess could be useful

first thing, I think I remember you covering it with that paper+glue+water technique. Don't do it again, it never looks good in anything other than kid's school projects.

If you don't want to completely trash it, cover it with acrylic putty or other materials as such, sand it and try painting again. It will look a thousand times better and you won't have wasted everything you did until now.
>>
>>8781586
Thank you for the advice. I will make sure to do that with my next prop.
I would do it for this one but I have neither enough time remaining nor money to do it to this one.

More progress on Abel Nightroad wings, artbook version. Just a bit more feathering and they'll be ready for sealing/painting. In the absence of a wearer for scale, they're 42" wingtip to shoulder.
>>
>>8776209
Sure! It's a pepakura file (like the first thing that comes up when you google majoras mask pepakura). I just followed the normal pep stuff. The black coording around it is stuff you use when you're putting screen doors together. The rest of the raised details are just craft foam.
>>
>>8780683
Basic shape of the sword is nice, but the metallic paint is showing every flaw and making it look super cheap. I highly recommend weathering the fuck out of it to give it more dimension and help cover the rough areas. The pleather is a nice idea as well, I say go for it. If you amp up the detail it could look really nice!
>>
>>8781586

I think the paper+glue is only good for a rough base. I tried it myself and as you said it wont look good unless you put in extreme ammounts of effort on a small piece, i dont even want to know how much you would need to put into a big piece.

But for a base that you then go over with something like bondo or something that actually smothes things out well it might work.

>>8783859

>>8780683
What's under the duct tape? Your problem is that you need a layer of something that can be sanded, and then to sand the hell out of it. The duct tape leaves lots of little ridges, and the paint exacerbates them.

Spent the long weekend playing with some new tools for my little workshop and making some of the foam parts for Wing Zero and doing a test fit of everything from the waist up. The waist wrap, biceps and thighs still need to be sealed and painted but they fit very well.

Quick pepakura question.

Right now im making a helmet, and im starting to get worried it might end up a bit too small.
Could i just in the end split it up at a few major seams and put in some sort of extensions to make it bigger? Or would that end up looking too horrible and/or obvious?

Anon, I understand it's your first time doing this, so here's some tips:

>Don't leave hot glue sticking out, it will show in the finished product.
>Sand the edges of the pieces. I know sometimes it's hard to cut them perfectly so sanding it out makes the piece much better.
>make a mock out of craft paper first, then cut the eva pieces.
>read some papercraft-to-eva guides, they have useful tips on making specific angles and details
>>
>>8797464
It's plastic and really solid I was impressed myself.
>>
>>8797671
I do need to sand the edges for sure, and for the hot glue I do smooth it out whilst it's still hot and it tends to get masked easily because of the mostly grey and black pant job. It tends to end up looking like bubbled pant or scarring when I weather it all. But it's definitely something I need to improve on
>>
>>8787006
Thank you! I'm looking forward to using all the swanky new materials we didn't have back when my sister cosplayed from Trinity Blood back in 200...6?

>>8794816
They're actually really light, less than 4 lbs. PVC pipe for the armature, pipe insulation and L200 foam to bulk the arm up, and EVA foam for the feathers. I'm sure they're going to feel heavier once they're cantilevering off my back, though.

>>8797394
What's the end material, fiberglass resin + bondo over the paper? Filler will hide most sins if you sand it enough.
>>
>>8798076

Well, I'm using really thick card. Like 1 mm card because i couldn't get any other sturdy card stock. And yea, going to resin it in the end with some fiberglass support maybe, altough if the card takes in the resin it might not even be neccesary from my experience.

Never worked with filler, and i might need it for this project tough.

>>8797671

Curious, why do people prefer hot glue for foam products? I watched evil ted smith and a few other people on youtube, and most swear on glue. And even i tried some foam crafting and used neostick glue, some contact glue based on kauchuk i think, and that thing was amazing. But it did not really allow for mistakes, as once you stuck things together you could only tear it appart.

Nowhere near as impressive as some of the stuff in this thread. I'm making a toon link costume for a toddler. I'm making the sword and shield out of felt so he can't hurt stuff. This was before I added The last spiraled bit. The little shit bites chunks out of foam toys so no foam sword and shield for him.
>>
>>8799101

Could be because hot glue is a bit more user friendly in terms of smell and usage.

Plus it's cheaper
>>
>>8799167

Could be the smell and maybe user friendlyness, but its sure aint cheaper. I think i paid like 3 eur for a medium tube, and you only need a super thin layer. But then again i use both in my crafts. I guess its just a thing that is nice if you can try it out to see what fits you better.

ive remade a helmet 3 times because I didnt get the scaling right. Its too fiddly to fix later imo and it doesnt take THAT long to make them (like 10 - 20 hours each) just put on your fav show and binge watch it while you work thats what I do atleast
>>
>>8801428

That's still time wasted
>>
>>8801428

I dunno man, potential 20 hours does kinda sound long for just making a base pattern.
>>
>>8801511

To add to this, if you screwed if up 3 times then you wasted up to 60 hours on a base pattern
>>
>>8801558
I think it depends on the pattern. If it's a unique/uncommon pattern that I'll only be using once then finagling with it in a later stage to save time is what I would do. On the other hand, if it's a pattern that I'd potentially be using again, I'll spend the extra hours to make it fit correctly from the get-go so I won't have to go through the trouble and headache again when I use it for a different cosplay.

>>
>>8806126
Cardstock, with resin and bondo. Google pepakura and you'll get tutorials.

If you're doing kindred and not just some random mask, the first few results are a little off looking but if you look hard enough you can find a nice unfold.

My advice is thin layers of bondo and use a mask please! I had a really bad month long cough/wheeze from accidentally breathing this stuff in and I know it can really hurt you so always be careful.

Thanks! It was really fun to wear too so I'm really happy with it. No one recognised me but I got two "your hat is huge" comments from strangers, haha.

I'll outline how I made it here since I just sort of improvised.

I followed this tutorial to draft the pattern: www.deliacreates.com/make-witch-hat-in-any-size-tutorial

I could not wrap my head around how to draft a cone from that tutorial so I'll sum up how I did it:

1. Measure out how tall you want the cone to be and cut some ribbon the same length. Pierce a hole in the end for a pencil (this will be your compass)
2. Draw Line 1 (same length as cone height)
3. Put down the dots of Line 2, which will be a bit longer than your head/hat hole circumference.
4. Using your "compass", round out the line, checking its length with a tape measure
5. Draw Line 3
6. Add seam allowance

I made the base curve a bit bigger and sewed it down onto the hat hole first. That way, you can avoid accidentally making the cone too small. Pinch the excess into the cone height seam allowance and sew that last.

I didn't make a cone for the lining so I could take the wire out for storage and transportation.

I used cotton drill and didn't interface the cone.

For the brim I interfaced both the blue and white, then sewed on some extra interfacing to both (I just used what I had lying around, the end result isn't /really/ stiff). Then I topstitched the brim about 1 or 2mm from the edge.

I didn't have thick wire at home (only wire that was around 2mm thick) so I cut 5 pieces of wire the length of the brim circumference and twisted 1 around the other 4. If I wasn't making it just a couple of days before the con, I reckon I would've added another strand of wire.

Make the total length a bit longer than the brim circumference so it pushes out on the brim to make it stiffer. It'll also stay in place without needing to be glued or sewn down. Start long as you can just overlap the excess.

This is the only pic I have of the end result. It's not great, sorry. Brought the wrong wig with me interstate and everything.

Anyway, good luck guys! I hope this has been helpful.

I'm leaning towards making them from EVA foam to keep them light but the exact look ill be doing I haven't hammered out yet. The AGP Wing Zero Custom girl has some nice wings so maybe those as a baseline.

Project is on hold temporarily till Friday. I'm going to buy some 15 inch drywall stilts to see if I can increase the lower leg length and help the stubby leg look problem i am having. I'm a bit worried since highest Ive done in the past is 10 inches and balance might be an issue considering the size of this build.

Nothing ventured nothing gained I suppose.

How do you plan to do the digital skull effect? I imagine you could probably run an actual LED matrix inside with super legit animations, but throwing some EL wire behind a carefully-cut-out cardstock screen could also look great. Like, a roughly shaped skull of 3-4 panels kind of like a beach ball or hot air balloon, with a grid of squares cut through it all. You could even line it with packing tape and watercolor over the inside to dim the different pixels. Just an idea.

>>8781284
Pepakura is the beginning and end of many armorers' careers. Don't get stuck there! Give foam a shot if you get bored or fed up with resin and fiberglass.

I've been pushing pixels on several 3d printing projects lately. This is the alien blaster in Fallout 4. I still have a lot of cleanup and polishing to do.

You should look into something like this to assist with your cuts.

http://www.usi-laminate.com/store/wpbec_viewItem.asp?idProduct=3932&tid=s_dc&cid=z9vrhgdn80&pcrid=83575699844&pkw=&pmt=&WT.srch=1&WT.mc_id=google_Shopping+IDs&gclid=Cj0KEQiAq920BRC8-efn57XrotYBEiQAlVlMQxe2vmCcDHSO82INEZS5QQhh_20RSZPlWR3i-ugm6ScaAl-r8P8HAQ

A tool like this will allow you to make those beveled edges easier and uniformly. Invest in a channel rail for it too. Idk where you live but if you have a Utrecht art store nearby they sell these tools and usually have coupons for 30-50% one item on the company website.
>>
Ok, so i finished my pepakura helmet.

A tight fit. Really tight, but whatever i want to finish it just to have it sit on my table if nothing else.

How should i procede? Should i trim the edges of the carboard and put painters tape over messy parts before i resin it? Or should i just clean up the worst offenders, resin over everything and let whatever i will put over (gesso or filler etc.) hide the mistakes? Images will follow if i manage to get ahold of my camera.

I finished Mitsuba's uniform in my free time over the last few weeks. My biggest gripe is using black fabric instead of the dark blue because the local fabric store only has so much nice quality fabric colors. That and I can't find a nice interlocking belt so I am substituting it with a white one until I can get a hold of one.
The pattern I used was pretty easy to follow so I might make a second one once I find the perfect fabric.
This was also the first time using a serger, not that we can see the hems but hey.

Some slight Kindred progress. Unfortunately my foam was like 2 inches too short to fit the whole bow on it so I had to make it in two pieces but w/e.

I really hate how flat other bows look, even if it is more accurate, so I gave it to a friend to see if they had any ideas and they did the sharp curves. It's taking a liberty but I think it looks good.

Also the mask is finally ready to have the grain put into it! Kinda nervous because I've never done detailed work like that before but the paint job can probably fix any big mistakes I make.

spackle or body filler would probably be too rigid and brittle for this kind of thing.

i don't have much experience with eva foam, but i'd imagine something like acrylic caulk (not silicone!) could work nicely.
>>
>>8838915
I've had good success with thick acrylic gel medium/molding paste, which is more flexible than something like spackle and can be wet sanded. Then seal the whole thing with several layers of wood glue, also wet sanded.

Thanks matey, you should do, me and a friend only started ours because of the XCOM 2 hype

>>8832945

Eh, sort of, once I have it finished I intend to scan all the templates I made of the breast plate, rest of the armour pieces, the jumpsuit I had sewn etc. and trying to hash together at least a basic guide as several people seem to be showing interest.

If you wanna know how I did the breastplate well, its the only thing I used pepakura for, although the file wasn't ideal for going straight to foam so i printed it anyway assembled it as a paper model, backed the inside with duct tape and then drew on the paper model where all the panels and details and such would go and then cut it apart in such a way it could easily translate to foam.

Y-you too

Yeah, XCOM 2 is hyping me up super bad, kinda wanna do one of the new designs with the GREMLIN.

What's the gun made out of, also foam? Curious as to how you got it so close and accurate to the in-game gun.

Yeah not gonna lie, i've been thinking how cool it'd be to somehow make a gremlin too, either heavily mod a quad copter or just have it sticking outta my back suspended on wire or something.
But for now we do have a SHIV that we still need to stick an RC car inside to get it moving

The gun is made out of the same foam as the armour, just in white instead of black, only reason was so its easy to see the sharpie lines to cut it. The type of foam is 10mm Plastazote LD45. As for how we got it close to the in-game gun? Well, we deccided we wnated the gun 1m in length and then got a lot of screenshots and ref images which we then got measurements from and increased to fit the 1m scale we wanted. Although there was a fair bit of luck involved and bodging parts and measurements

Hope you're going to EGX in September, would be neat to do XCOM cosplays together

Yeah it'd be cool to get a squad going, any class in particular that you'd wanna cosplay?
I'm trying to get mine done for Midlands MCM which is in 2 weeks so i'm only carrying the rifle but im gonna make a pistol and medkit to go with it and be a Support

first time working with EVA foam.
whats a good way to make it look/feel like hard armor?
so far im thinking of brushing on some resin on the foam to stiffen it up. or will that cause it to crack if it gets bent a little?

or maybe a mixture of watered down woodglue? that might be the cheaper route but not sure on the outcome of that.

plastidip is what you need my man.
nowadays, it even comes in handy spray bottles.

Definitely try plastidip. It's actually pretty cheap. You can even paint on top of it.

My Grando Espada cosplay is basically done! I still need the tights, shoes & style the wig. There's a few small adjustments that need to be made (like her cravat thing is a little too big). But otherwise I'm fairly happy with it! Also covered my face because I look roooooough

I actually just bought a pre-styled wig from an eBay user for 16.99. It actually arrived in a week and is styled pretty nicely. The only problem I have is I need to loosen the ponytail a bit and possibly trim up the underside of hair because you can see my dark hair.
Pic related is the exact wig I bought, but they aren't selling it anymore it seems.

Oh I did see that but the bun look a little too large initially, though I might try it now.

Are you satisfied with the overall quality then?
Also how is your Meiko going? You doing the brown uniform variation or the red?
>>
>>8840963
I'm actually pretty happy with how the quality is, and it seems the bun can be tightened.
I'm doing the tan blazer version, I actually found the blazer for clearance at Target and finished the skirt the night before a 1 day local con (I dressed up as Mari because my Meiko wig wasn't scheduled to arrive until after the con).
>>
>>8840977

Well I've seen this one also which I'm debating on because the bun is detachable which seems useful if you're dissatisfied with the bun placement in the other one.

I keep trying to look at other cosplayers for inspiration and decision making, but sadly there aren't many...

I hope you've been doing your squats Anon!

Oh I forgot to ask, if it isn't too much trouble, would it possible to photograph the wig and post it here so I can get a better idea of the quality? I'm really frugal with my spending and I hate dropping money on anything until I've got a good idea of what I'm buying. It would be an amazing help to me.

Sorry, here's some quick shots I got. The top two and bottom left are right out of the bag. The bottom right is after I undid the ponytail and took off the bun attachment, fit it to my head and then redid the bun kinda quickly. I plan to redo it again to make it smoother, probably ask my friend who is a hair stylist to assist.
Added the root beer for you as well

It's kind of dumb progress but I got my boots for Meiko Shiraki and I'm just so satisfied with the fit and shape.
I just need to get some PU leather fabric and assemble some cuffs to go on the top and that'll be them out of the way.

It's so nice when that little ignition towards a finished product begins.

Thanks, unbelievably they were actually pitifully cheap.

I got them on eBay for just £19.99 with £3.99 P&P. They're actually all over eBay and Amazon when you search stuff like "black stretch knee high boots heels". but you can get them even cheaper... £18 + P&P... £15, £12, but this was the last listing I could find them in stock in a UK size 6.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400995057010?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&var=670523896811&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

The stock photo makes them look horrifically shitty quality but they're actually pretty snug and sturdy, not to mention comfortable to walk in which for me is priority with cosplay.
>>
>>8843701
I'd avoid fleece. I'd say maybe a suiting material like wool or a fabric on the heavier side.
>>
>>8843701

The fabric of this always reminded of the very thick, tightly woven, wool habits that ancient European monks and friars would wear. The one that had a visible grain when closely inspected and kind of resembled a potato sack. I've no idea what it's called but it's on the tip of my tongue...
>>
>>8843701

Kinda looks like this, only thicker and heavier.
>>
>>8843932
holy crap those are exactly the boots I need for one of my costumes
>no size 9

welp it was fun dreaming.
>>
>>8844821

Keep looking! There's LOADS of listings for the same boots on Amazon and the rest of eBay with different stock photos and they're always going in and out of stock so keep all the bookmarks in a folder and wait for a size 9 to come back in stock.
>>
>>8844821

Also, who're you cosplaying?
>>
>>8844821

Anon, assuming you're in the US, a US 9 is a UK 8 right? They have them in stock here.

Revamped the legs a bit more and plasti-dipped most of the foam parts. Finish on the foam parts is better than I expected them to be so that's good.
>>
>>8843701
A twill fabric would work fine with this. Please dont use fleece. Not only does it not look like the fabric used but you'll also be sweating like crazy. If you're concerned about thickness, double up on what you're using. I would recommend canvas but i feel that would be way too stiff for what you're making. Perhaps gabardine?
