A lot of cosplayers don't want to spend more money than necessary, so their first costumes are sometimes literally the first real outfit they've made mostly from scratch.
If you really don't want to screw it up, make a prototype of your costume with scrap/cheap fabrics or even old bedsheets. THEN make the actual costume. Professionals usually make prototypes of their garments first, or practice new techniques on scraps before applying them to an actual product. You get practice & you get a second chance.
Also, test how your makeup looks by taking photos with flash and without. Hallshots are not usually that flattering in the first place, so you want your face to be camera-ready, which usually means using more makeup than usual (that's why we contour, otherwise our faces will get washed out.) Also, shiny fabrics & cheap satin look bad in these shots as well, so please stay away from shiny stuff before you learn more about which shiny stuff is good.
and don't skimp on the wig. Congrats, you probably wont be in a bad cosplay thread now. You could always post in the progress or help threads to ask gulls for honest advice before leaving the house.
