I was just cleaning out photos on my phone and realized bought the fabric to make Pearl over a year ago. I have the bottom half of the costume done, but I've lost a lot of motivation with how the fandom has been going.

What's the best way to go about Rose's star cutout? I don't want to just paste a skin toned star on my dress, but I've seen some cutouts that have drooped and completely lost their shape. Would reverse applique be the best approach, or is there a way to do an actual cutout that doesn't involve fabric and still holds its shape? Sorry if this is a pretty stupid question, I've never had to do something like this before in my sewing.
Im going to do garnet to a convention soon. Pretty happy with everything on my costume so far (minus a few setbacks)

Yes reverse appliqué would be the best way. One way of getting very crisp cutouts is to stitch a thin but stiff fabric like organza in the shape of the cutout, cut the shape out leaving 1/4" seam allowance, turn under and press, and then edge stitch (if you aren't sure what a edge stick is look it up it will keep it from rolling), and then reverse appliqué the flesh color fabric.

post jailbreak, her skin is purple. there are so many places online to buy paint in many different colors, or you could mix your own. TAG's berry wine is a great color for garnet's post-jailbreak skin tone. you could use purple paint, contour with dark purple, and highlight with a lighter purple or pink. and there's nothing wrong with contouring with eyeshadows as long as they're matte. im cheap and i tend to buy those to contour with- they work great if you know how to use them

How is that anon weak? I've lost interest in things before from over exposure to shitty fans. It's a pretty normal reaction to start to resent something you once loved because it begins to take on the negative aspects of the fandom in your head no matter what you try.
She makes the costume, wears it to a con, those are the sorts of people who she will meet in that outfit. You can say all you want about the rest of the fandom being decent but the loud idiots always shout over the chill parts, and that is who you are going to notice first.
It's unrealistic to tell people to not lose interest in something when the fandom's less than savory exploits are plastered all over the internent.

Actually, I really, really love TAG and I have other colors by them too, but yellow is not something I would recommend from them. It's quite hard to blend and is easy to make splotchy. Maybe it's just me, but their other colors are just so much easier to work with. I would recommend something like Kryolan for a yellow, since I've seen some pretty good results from them, although its twice the price of TAG.

So the other two who suggested wire and stiff interface are somehow is better to make it lay flat? Look up how welt pockets are done. The technique is done to enforce the cutout and not show a raw edge which reverse appliqué usually has. My degree is in apparel development so I'm not talking out of my ass I'm speaking from the years of experience I have and thanks to recent trends my experience with cutouts and appliqué techniques.

Please stop suggesting wire for Rose's star cutout.
In order for it to be strong enough to hold the shape it will have to be around coat-hanger thickness which will looks lumpy and bad in all likelihood.
Personally, I think interfacing+reverse applique is the best choice, with a sheer, nude material inside to keep the gut from bulging out.
Whatever process used should be figured out before the dress bodice is constructed too since any quality Rose dress is doing to need boning built in which had a good chance of interfering with the star placement/bodice stability.
tl;dr use trial and error before constructing the whole dress instead of waiting til the garment is complete to figure out the star.

well yeah, but it all depends on the clothing you're wearing over it.
i mean like if you're getting tights that are thick enough to really have the color pop out and look natural, they're gonna end up getting rubbed and moved around as you move around, and it'll bunch up a bit where the stockings lay over the tights.
i'm also just not a fan of armsocks or ights being used as a sub in for skin color. almost no one gets it to look good. i've seen tons of pictures of people using tights and armsocks, and i've only seen maybe 3 that didn't look exactly like you were wearing a bodysleeve.

Different anon here who has worn her fair share of dance tights and colored tights for both SU cosplays and homestuck. What you're describing just simply doesn't happen up on the thigh. Maybe it does if your tights are too big or cheap and stretched out, or I could see this maybe being a problem in the wrist/ankle area where the tights are loser, but thighs?
