>What is Larme Kei?

"I would like to explain what a 'girly' fashion is from my perspective. I will also include some keywords that is used in the magazine [LARME]. As an introduction, I will state what a girly fashion is. According to Japan's 'girly fashion', being 'Dolly' is an important element, and essential. For example, making the legs look long by using a high waist bottoms, and a balance of exposure.*
There will be a contrast of style using frills and flares to show the clear bodyline as well. These methods will emphasize slender waist, neck and legs which leads to an overall 'girly' fashion. Ribbons and check pattern shirts/bottoms are symbolic for 'girly' fashions too. As a fact, there is another fashion style that's beyond 'girly'. In general it's called 'Lolita'.
For the second facts about girly fashion, is the hairstyle. It focuses on the forelock**, and the atmosphere around the face. The cute girl will show the natural type of being girly. The importance of hair color, affects how girly you would want to show out. Instead of bright colours, dark and grey-ish calm color will turn you into a calm and settled person.
As for the facial make-up, natural colors for skins, then add some colour on lips, cheeks and eyes, which will multiply the cuteness. These make ups are a necessity when showing girly faces to people. It will look cute and wanting men to protect you***.
In conclusion, these fashion, make-ups, and hairstyle are my perspective to what a 'girly' fashion is. It is a unique Japanese style of being 'girly' and I guarantee that trying on these types will turn you into a 'girly' girl.

* by "balance of exposure", she's referring to exposing skin
** forlock = bangs
*** I'm fairly sure she is referring to men wanting to protect you, not you wanting it them to.

I like the way you arrange your collages in a clean and simple manner and I definitely think there’s a place for well thought out larme style collages, especially in light of the amount of irrelevant crap that crops up on tumblr.

I think the top collage is successful but desu the second is a little awakened looking, the dot tights look a bit busy to me and I think the sweater would look a bit odd over the dress since the sleeves of it are so long, not to mention it looks like white hearts on grey as opposed to cream/ pale ivory.

I think it's obvious you have coording skills, I just think it needs a bit of refining. I'd definitely recommend going though larme archives again for some inspiration, plus to help really fix how the style works and looks in your mind.

Also if you're able to, it might be nice to have some makeup looks in there as well since it's such a big part of the larme look.

Anyway, keep it up anon, I'd love to see what else you come up with.

thanks for the response! i do agree i think i went a little overboard with the heart look, probably should have went for short socks instead. But i just loved all those pieces together (even if the white and cream was slightly off)

I'd love to do makeup but I can't think of anything other than posting stuff from the magazines. I have yet to see a "larme makeup" on the internet from westerners that looks good. I would do my own.. but I don't need people bashing my face in.

>>8703955
I would avoid heavily patterned tights or socks. They seem too cluttered for Larme. IF you have something really simple, maybe just a couple of bow accents or something, you could probably pull it off. Wool tights could definitely work though, especially if you can get them in white. I have some off white ones that are lovely.

I want to buy white wooly tights online, but the ones cute are one size only and they gap a bit, i'm just a M/L size but asian tights are too small.I have floral black tights that are pretty toned down for larme and some otks with embossed hearts, these are the only ones that fit Larme kei.

I don't know if they classify as "cute," but I've bought all my wool tights from here in the past: http://www.warmlegwear.com/

If you live in the us/Canada they have free shipping over $35. Not sure what their international shipping is like.

When sizing go by your biggest measurement. I fit the weight size of small but opted for the medium since I'm taller and they fit perfectly.

They're merino wool so they're not as scratchy as normal wool. You could wear another pair of stockings underneath if you're sensitive. They do tend to pill (get those little lint dots) so I just use a sweater depiller A couple of times a season and that does the trick.

I haven't looked for wool tights on taobao or other places because I'm wary about the fit.

Those shoes are fine for Larme. Pretty much all modestly cute and girly shoes and subtly coquettish shoes are suitable for Larme. It's one of the easiest parts of the outfit. As long as they're not neon, space boots or uguu kawaii fairy kei sneakers etc. Obviously there are footwear that are more strongly associated with Larme such as fluffy ones, platforms with cherries and so forth. in basic primary colours (black, brown, navy or red), soft pastels or Dusty pastels then they should be fine. so far the most prevalent footwear I've seen in Larme magazine are kitten heels, high heels and midi heels(strap and slip-on), peep-toe shoes, wedges, ballerina flats, school girl loafers, mary-janes, t-bar Mary-janes and Tokyo boppers.
>>
>>8704321
Unless you already own these, I wouldn't drop the money on these ugly things. Sure you could make them work but you could do so much better.

Are you in the uk? Asos might have some funkier shoe options and they have free returns for uk residents so you could buy and try on, then send back anything that doesn't work. A bit of a process, but you may have better luck with that than physical stores.

Otherwise save a bunch of Larme footwear pics to your phone and look at them while you hit up a couple of shoe stores. You might find something.

I live in Europe, a bit expensive considering ship and prices. But still, i would consider to get, i have wool tights that get piling like crazy but they are just black, it's awful when in offline shops when you want white or pink wool tights they watch you like an alien from outer space, life is too short to wear just dark color plain tights.
>>8704643
I should search again on AE, last time i found only leggings or one size lined tights.
>>
>>8705474
If I find any cheaper European sources for wool tights I'll let you know. Like you said though it's hard to find things in anything other than black that I was ecstatic to find a site with white wool tights that weren't $70.

Reporting back after a quick search. Some of the options on this page seem to be white or off white. Maybe they'll work for you?

and um, top shop, river island, karen millen, warehouse and possibly yumi - just bear in mind that not all items from these brands will be suitable, although they do sell many things that fit the girly aesthetic with lots of sheer and ruffle details etc.

Also although the wuality ids ok with these brands, with yumi and topshop in particular, you may be better of checking auctions on ebay etc for better value.

Orla Kiely for Clarks - I haven't bought them yet as I like the design but the toe looks a bit square/clunky. Actually seconding this anon >>8714348 as it seems to be super hard to find real leather (I know, silly me) non-frumpy looking mary jane shoes.

Just a question:
Are otome and larme kei the same thing? Because pretty much all brands that get called larme are actually otome stores.
>>
>>8714487
Absolutely not, and I'm not sure you'll be able actually grasp the difference even if someone explains it to you if you haven't already just by looking at them.
>>
>>8714487
you could probably find some things in otome shops that will fit larme, but the styling is COMPLETELY different.

I like this kinda flushed face with the blush, only problem I have olive/slightly tan skin and I dunno if that kinda look suits me, due to that I've deterred away from blush in case I over use it and look ridulous.

Any advice for the fashion for girls with thighs they aren't super happy about?

>nb4 'diet and exercise', yes and yes, working on both of those.

I have a lot of dark-colored tights, but I'm speaking more in regards to what style of shirts would look flattering and still work for the fashion. I love pleated but they work the least with my figure.

Stuff like this maybe? Straight up and down, you can't really see what shape your legs are.
>>
>>8714649
Buy some blush at a place that allows returns on used makeup (sephora, cvs, Walmart, etc) and try it out. If you don't like it, return it. Try a few different shades to see what works for you. You might not be able to use Risa's exact shade but there's likely something out there for you.
>>
>>8715139
Sorry I just realized that comment was very U.S. centric. Hopefully you have places wherever you are that allow returns. Otherwise just go for something really cheap. You're checking for color, you can get something good next time around.
>>
>>8715093
This shape is awful for anyone with large thighs or hips. You don't actually get the straight up and down shape if there's any significant difference between your waist and hips, you just end up deforming the intended shape of the garment.

Something with a little more flair is better IMO. The flowy shape skims over and doesn't offer any definition, plus the slight poof gives the illusion of slimmer legs.

On a related note, I really love the pencil skirts, but they fit me in a conventionally flattering way - more Kim Kardashian than coquette - which I don't think really works for larme. Is there any way to downplay this?
>>
>>8715157
Damn you're right
>>
>>8715003
Not that dark, kinda annoying cos its tan, olive, but not enough - under some light I look orange, under some, I'm grey/green. I have, but they seem to be pretty normie like to get the cheekbones and contouring.

>>8715139
I dunno if there's a place like that in Australian, I'll try and see.
>>
>>8715170
I'd just go for red, if you've got gold undertones try a more orange one

>>8715043
Same. My calves are skinny and my thighs are bigger than my hips so these work really well in hiding my fat for me. Even simple circle skirts (as long as they don't stick to you too closely) are great
>>
>>8714487
Definitely not the same thing but the underlying concept is similar; girly, maiden and both use retro/vintage themes; otome tends to be a direct vintage look whereas Larme tends to be a more contemporary Jfashion take on vintage. There are pieces that could be used for both but ultimately the end result should be styled differently. Otome tends to be alot more quirky, alot busier, Use of colours is more adventurous and varied, use of patterns and prints is more prevalent in both main pieces and hosiery(rarely used in Larme except for mainly gingham or the occasional tartan skirt). There are other things as well, but I can see why you asked the question. Pic related is a Grimoire dress that could be used in otome kei, the feel of the photo and the styling has a somewhat Larme feel and the actual cut of the dress is one that features in Larme a fair bit.
>>8714578
MILK is the main brand that has alot of otome/larme cross over.

I would agree with this, I could imagine items such as in pic related being styled in a lame way for instance, perhaps with sheer socks, chunky heels, little lace wrist gloves and cute clutch or ruffle pillow bags etc.

As a side note, have any brands more associated with otome ever been featured in larme and styled in a larme way?

I actually think Kim was cute as shit before all the contouring crap etc - so much of it has to do with styling and attitude. If you get the make-up and accessories right you should be able to pull it off. The pencil skits with extra ruffle details are a good choice I think, they're super feminine and the ones below the knee or not much above seem more cute coquettish than sexpot that way.

Even if you have a fuller, curvier figure I think it's possible, I mean look at Christina Hendricks, when she dresses super girly and femme she seems pretty cute and coquettish to me (rather than man-eater).

That blouse with the dress will look great imo, the belt I could take or leave.
Necklace is a bit chunky but would still work.
I feel that the ankle cuffs on the shoes are a bit out of place, but you can't really go wrong with black platforms. I would either swap out the socks for sheer white ones, or the shoes for more slender heels. Just to add a more delicate vibe.
>>
>>8716813
what material would a skirt like this be made of? (new to sewing)
>>
>>8718420
http://verybrain.thebase.in/items/2014399
Original is 100% polyester, I'm guessing it's light to medium weight suiting of some kind because the ruffles protrude so much that the fabric can't be too delicate. If you ask for polyester suiting at a fabric store that's a good starting point

The back of it also seems to be pretty butt-hugging, which just makes me want the original even more.

I don't know how others feel, but I'm really liking the chunkier more statement type jewellery that has been appearing in more recent larme editions.

That's the thing, though. Very long hair is incredibly difficult to style in a girly way since it's so heavy and Larme hair needs texture and volume. You really need short layers at the front for styling, then either braid or bun the back.

I appreciate that it's not easy but you can still achieve some volume/softness and fluff by pulling out the braids etc a little so they're not too tight and formal much like in this image (although you'll likely need hidden pins to take the weight of the hair and stop it flattening) >>8719343

Also if you don't have bangs or shorter layers, you could try experimenting with fake bangs that come with longer side pieces (pic related). You can also sprinkle a bit of talc on them to make them appear more realistic and even thin them out with scissors if you prefer a less heavy look.

I don't think you're correct. It's true that a lot of Larme hairstyles are short, but I think that's due to the fact that a lot of the models get their hair done a lot and over processed hair is hard to grow out very far.

Ofc limp, unstyled, long hair is absolutely not Larme.
>>
>>8719464
And you can't style below the waist hair beyond braids. Curling doesn't hold unless you damage it first with bleaching

This is a fat load of nonsense with hundreds of years of hairstyling evidence to prove it. Curls will stay in long hair, in fact something like the middle >>8719479

This is entirely dependent on your hair texture and weight. My coarse stranded, dead straight Asian hair needs heat and a fuckton of product to hold curls below APL; other friends with classic length hair that tends to waves when shorter and pulls itself straighter due to the weight when long can put their hair in braids or rag curls overnight and get perfect waves or curls with minimal hairspray or a small amount of mousse

Incoming wall of text!
First off, I appreciate that you didn't go for the overdone obvious Swankiss fluffy thing that seems to be the go to choice for everyone trying Larme outfits, and you went for a more mature colour scheme. The outfit doesn't really work though for the reasons the other anons have already pointed out so I won't go over that again. I did an edit of how I would make your outfit more Larme looking (50 hours in MS paint). Ok so we've covered the flesh coloured tights things and you can wear those under thigh highs. I would invest in some platform type footwear, or some kitten heels or midi heels, just anything feminine and cute that you see in Larme. Pour over Larme scans, or better yet buy some issues of Larme, and really absorb the source material. Buy a few key pieces you see models wearing, like say a fluffy mohair sweater, a midi length tulle skirt and so on.
You really have neglected to accessorize at all. A few suitable necklaces with pendants and earrings (almost always gold in Larme magazine) , and hair ribbons can make the difference. I feel like the bag is wrong but I've added a fluff ball bag charm to improve the feel.

>>8723363
No offence but that looks terrible; to be fair you didn't have a great outfit to work with. Those ankle socks are rarely seen in larme, they usually go for a clean crisp outline for the ankle area, with the exception being the rare use of Katie style lace cuffs. In that particular outfit the triangular shape of the ruffle is completely at odds with the boxy shape of the dress. This is also in answer to >>8723047 those socks are kind of childish looking; I don't doubt you might find some magazine scans somewhere with models wearing them but I think it's more an exception to the rule.

Don't get me wrong, There are pics with those ruffle top socks, they seem to mostly be Swankiss shop girl photos though. So I guess my additional advice is, if you do a Swankiss style Larme outfit they would be great for that. Pic related - every single pic I have that features those socks is Swankiss (the top two rows). Bottom row is the type of ankle sock you commonly see in most other Larme photos.

I really like Risa's recent 'sweetsexy' look she posted. I think we'll be seeing more of sweet sexy styles appearing in larme, particularly with brands such as verybrain, with their cute but saucy style appearing in the magazine.

The single bun with a bow looks good, but you definitely need bangs (clip ins will do, easy to find attached local beauty shops) or at least some pieces around your face. Bare foreheads aren't cute

Is is possible to do the younger look in larme while fully covering the areas in gray? (meaning no wide necklines or cutouts there) (excuse the crappy drawing but it was easier than trying to explain with words)
I'm extremely uncomfortable showing off my back, it's full of acne scars, or wearing anything that emphasizes my breasts, meaning no cleavage, no low necklines, no underbust straps (high waist is fine), no fitted/padded cups, etc
I have no problem exposing anything outside of that zone though (arms, legs, midriff, etc), so can covered on top/exposed on the bottom work and look balanced?
>>
>>8725273
turtle necks, crop tops, sweaters, anything with frilly or peter pan collars works just fine.

On another note, what coords would best suit a tall slender person with wide hips? Short dresses can look like little girl dresses on me, and something about super ruffly/fluffy things just looks really bad and inelegant. I want to look cute, but still wearing adult clothing.

Does everyone say that? the decision to wear hair away from the face should be decided on a case to case basis. Yes there are lots of examples of these hairstyles in Larme magazine, all worn by gorgeous models which not everyone trying these styles are. Certain individuals with certain face shapes or unfortunate foreheads may benefit more from bangs (the girl who self posted in this thread happens to look fine with hair away from her face though desu). So I'd suggest just figuring out what looks best for the individual and not relying on the old "if it's in the magazine it will work for me" type of thinking.

That definitely makes sense. But personally ive seen enough people say that bangs are a requirement for larme that for a while i almost gave up on ever fully accomplishing the style. So I just want people to know they don't need bangs to wear the stlye as long as the put some styling in cuz for some reason it seems to be a common misconception.

I think you can use plain or simple patterned tights (polkadots, small flowers, small hearts, bows) or over the knee socks. I can't use for larme ankle socks with flesh tights only in winter (i freeze easily), layering otks with flesh or same colored tights or fleece tights is a better winter idea.

But anon, she has glitter on her cheeks like Swankiss Saaya! Seriously though, I too do not get how, at this point, two years after the magazine has been in circulation, with so many scans available, that these people still can't get a basic outfit right. I have a vague idea of why Tumblrinas and normalfags are always so way offbase, I sort of suspect it's disinformation at the hands of more popular bloggers they want to emulate, who blog an outfit pic they incorrectly tag as Larme and usually has certain reoccurring elements (ones I've noticed so far are, cheek glitter, Barbie font pendants, pastels, often bright/candy pastels not soft or dusty) then Tumblr majoritively believes that this is indeed this brand new trend called Larme and want to be a part of it asap. So they recreate this incorrect look and post away. Add to the fact that Tumblr is obsessed with uguu kawaii and can not grasp the classier or more mature elements of the style and you get results like your pic.
>>
>>8726416
Isn't this just fairy kei?

I like her hair though.
>>
>>8726480
no
that's not close to fairy kei's aesthetic
pastel ≠ fairy kei
>>
>>8726432
I can help you with that. The entire top half needs to go - makeup, piercings, wig, silly hat, kawaii cupcake top, wig. The bottom half is workable
>>

>>
>>8726486
didn't even notice that piercing. huh
i guess she could get one of those open loop ones and flip it up so people can't see it
>>8726475
this is why i try to avoid following westerners who post jfash on sites like Instagram unless they've really, really, got the aesthetic down because it's so much better to usually get it straight from the source. I mean look what happened to cult party kei. popular tumblr bloggers spread misinformation and now like no one in the west seems to know who to do it correctly
that sounded incredibly weebish but i just rather get the pure version untainted by misconceptions
>>
>>8726432
Ohhh i didn't know, i should check it out!
>>
>>8726497
I don't think that's weebish, I think that's understandable considering. To be fair, there are westerners who do get it right but off the top of my head, I can literally only think of one for each of those styles (Saramari - Larme, Cosmashanti - cult party)

I have mentioned something along these lines before in previous threads but seriously, if you can, try to up your ebay auction game. I found all in pic related selling for under 7USD with no bids.

If you're looking for a bargain or just want to be able to experiment without breaking the bank, it can work out really well.

To find the items I used phrases such as - peplum, sheer, lace, peter pan, baby pink, baby blue, midi, lace blouse, ruffle, net, gingham, cropped, heart and pin-up.

You have to be prepared to trawl but with practice you can get quite fast; it took me about 15 minutes to find everything here. I also always organise the search starting with 'price plus p+p lowest fist' to find the very best deals.

Also try not to be too put off by poor quality seller pics, as long and they are in good condition, you can usually use a bit of imagination to see their potential.

These all look terrible. Look, the yen is weak. It's not that hard to buy Larme. There's no reason to be sinking 15 dollars into an ebay purchase. It's not lolita fashion where things can get up around the 200-300 dollar mark regularly. Just suck it up, save maybe about 15 more dollars and buy a legit Larme item.

I think that's maybe a bit harsh, they're poor quality amateur snaps of mid-range clothing - you can still find stock photos of some of these and they look pretty decent.

I agree it would be silly to blow a bunch of cash on a lot of items like this, but for a few wardrobe fillers or the odd outfit it's not a bad way to go, especially when some of these are $50 pieces for around $4.

Also in terms of 'legit larme', for what it's worth, several of the brands in the collage have actually featured in Japanese larme based style blogs and one in the magazine itself. I still think there is merit in trying to gauge potential in an item and trying to see past dodgy looking, unflattering photos etc. I didn't mean to suggest that you should restrict yourself to ebay or even mainly buy on there, more 'worth a look'.

You can probably hang up any larme ~official~ brand and it would look like shit sitting on a rack anyway. larme's style is an overall coord. lolitas dresses look gorgeous laying on the ground. larme's whole thing is about the atmosphere which is hard to pull off in a static hanger image.

just look really normie to me.
They could theoretically fit into the look but just don't have enough of the main points of >>8703069 to look really sweet and girly in a larme way, and you'd have to all out with hair/makeup/accessorising to make it work.
>>8728404 shows good examples.

>>8728473
From what I've heard mon lily is the exception in terms of quality. Dear my love and plumprino stuff you'd have to watch out for.
>>
>>8728481
It's a little like lolita, clothing from larme brands are MEANT to be worn in larme coords, so they're designed with that in mind. Sometimes, due to current trends or pure luck, normie stores happen to carry something that works. The whole "nymphet" thing was in style this summer so some pieces worked because "nymphet" fashion and larme share some common points (as much as i despise the whole "soft nymphet daddy spank me cummies uwu" thing it's hard to deny that larme shares some things with it.)
>>
>>8728481
but your 'good' examples were just close-ups plus one stock image version pic from the ebay collage you said looks too 'normie'.

i agree that there are certain items/cuts that instantly look 'larme' and have interesting details etc, but if you look through all the magazines they have plenty of 'normie' passing stuff as well, just styled in the larme way we've come to recognise.

I have five copies of the magazine now which I know doesn’t prove much beyond the fact that i have the power to buy stuff, however some of the things (ie the 'boring' stuff that doesn’t get uploaded/reblogged so much) are normie as hell.
>>
>>8728548
Thanks, that's a good way of putting it. I'm an ex-lolita so I think that's planted something in me inherently against buying stuff from normie stores, but I agree about how it's just a nice coincidence when they do have something that works. Starting otome has opened me up more to a lot of western designers that have pieces that work in jfashions (alannah hill, cath kidston) so I'm getting there slowly.

>>8728553
I said -most- of the ones I quoted looked too normie, and then quoted what I thought was compilation of good examples from within them. But I do agree that the larme magazines have a lot of 'casual' outfits that are closer to normie clothes, probably because they want to show everyday larme looks to readers as well as their more fantasy or story based ones.
