It has been a while since we had this topic.

How has your style changed? Post your first and your most recent /cgl/-related coord or cosplay. Multiple pics are okay but we do not need to see anything that does not show significant improvement over the previous pic.

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?
>What area have you improved the most in?
>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?

Starting with some lolita before and afters.

I see a trend away from high-contrast prints toward more complimentary-colored prints. Is this because of seasonal trends or is it typical of lolita progress?
>>
>>8686885
>>
>>8686889
>>
>>8686885
I think it's a bit of both, I was super into bright colours when I started, but even before the trend for more complimentary, darker and/or muted prints that was what I was drawn to as I progressed.
I guess the longer you're into lolita you start to realize how jarring the high-contrast stuff is.

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?
I went to my first lolita meet one year ago exactly
>What area have you improved the most in?
Quality over quanity, I bought a ton of Bodyline at first to build up a wardrobe. Nothing matched. I thought Bodyline was the holy grail of quality until I owned brand.
>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
Coord help threads are nice. Same with bst threads, which I prefer over LM
>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
Purchase some accessories instead of always buying main pieces. I also need to work desperately on posing

>What area have you improved the most in?
My sewing skills.
>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
Ita/nitpick/good coord threads have been great. I learned that color matching is a thing and there's a difference between warm and cool colors.

Not being so cheap, lol. Also I'd like to make more interesting coordinates.

3 years or so, on-off. Cosplay 5 years.
>What area have you improved the most in?
Make-up, some sewing, some knowing how to flatter myself.
>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
It's helped me a lot in terms of being interested into wearing lolita, and definitely for skincare, but not too much otherwise yet, but I'm a newfag.

Losing weight, hair, and further sewing skills.

2012 - 2013 - 2015

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?
I've been in to Lolita since 2007, and cosplay since 2012.

>What area have you improved the most in?
Recently, it's been makeup, but over the years everything has improved (coordination, sewing, wig styling, props, etc).

>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
I've learned a ton about makeup, skincare, prop building, and coordination from threads here. Nitpick threads are also really helpful for Lolita, as they put in to words what feels "off" about an outfit. WIP threads are very motivating for me as well.

>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
Still working on makeup and wigs for both Lolita and cosplay, and for cosplay specifically I'd like to learn how to make armor and get better at props.

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?
Six years I want to say

>What area have you improved the most in?
Costume quality. I use to buy/commission a lot but have branched out to making my own

>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
I love the wip threads. I get to stalk people and see how they make their costumes, etc. and get a sense of what I need to do.

>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
Makeup, props, and wigs. I really want to start making more props and style my own wigs so save commissioning money. I'll forever suck a makeup.

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?
About 7-8 yearsish.

>What area have you improved the most in?
Sewing obviously. But wig styling has really improved too, mostly because I got braver to try new things really. Also I learned how to do makeup thanks to cosplay.

>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
A lot. It helps not having people close to you willing to critique your work.

>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
Prop making. I've sort of avoided it this whole time and I'd really like to learn and make a nice prop to go with my costumes.

I don't know much about lolita but there are a lot of pretty dresses in here.

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?

Since late 2007, early 2008. I was a fatty-chan super ita for a long time and then took a break from the fashion and got back into it seriously in 2012-2013. I was a bit of ita snow flake for way too long. These days I wear a lot of casual AP, chocolate prints and ETC and not a whole lot of lolita.

>What area have you improved the most in?

Dressing for my body. I may love sack dresses but man do they look bad on me. I like to think my color balance has come a long way and I have improved at accessorizing but still need bit of work.

>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?

I self posted in a similar thread about two years ago and got some pretty solid criticism. I have nice hair because of you guys, thanks. Seriously. Watching nit pick and coord help threads has helped me a ton. In the last year my coording although very basic has come a long way.

>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?

I would like to get better at accessorizing and doing more interesting things with my hair. And my coording skills can always improve, although I expect I'll always have pretty simple coords.

Left is 2012-2013, Right 2015

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?
years and years

>What area have you improved the most in?
shopping tbh, i could have been wearing brand sooner if i had budgeted for it.

>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
it has been a large help. most of my practical knowledge comes from anons here. this is where i go for thoughtful or intense discussion about jfash, since i am quite shy IRL. without the collective knowledge of anons and the exposure to a range of jfash shared and discussed here, i would not have crept off my armchair to attend local lolita events.

>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
sewing skills, posing, and makeup. better coordination will come as i acquire and construct more things, i expect.

>What area have you improved the most in?
Sewing definitely
>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
It's definitely shown me a lot of what not to do and I've picked up tips on absolutely everything from here.
>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
Time management is something I still have an issue with, my second pic still has stuff I need to add to it/re-do and I've recently learnt that I have next to no ability to style natural/simple wigs, after doing a lot of shounen anime type wigs, I always want to over style them.

Into lolita for 2 years.
>What area have you improved the most in?
Overall cohesion in my wardrobe and coords. I would also say color coordination and dressing in a style that suits me.
>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
I've learned a lot about different shops and brands, how to order internationally, etc. Seeing all the coords posted here and the discussion that follows provides inspiration and insight on what not to do.
>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
Makeup, definitely. I still have trouble putting on false lashes. I should also work on my posing and facial expressions.

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?
Lolita: 2012. Cosplay 2002, but I'm currently not an active cosplayer. I plan to get back to it soon.
>What area have you improved the most in?
Coordination, making accessories, makeup and overall presentation. I also lost a bunch of weight and it was wonderful until I gained a good deal back. I'm going to attempt to lose it again and then some over the next year.
>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
Being my own worst nitpick. I've learned to up my game in quality of items. I started as a replica and bodyline-chan. I only use bodyline for shoes, and rewear my old blouses but I plan on replacing them with nicer quality ones in the near future.
>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
My weight lol. Posing, not looking like a total derp. I take better purposeful stupid pictures than purposeful nice ones. I also need to work on confidence. I think a good deal of my confidence was lost when I gained weight. I think losing it again and working harder to not fall back into old habits will go a long way in being more confident.

(please try to ignore the too small bolero, it looks awful because I'm dumb and thought I could still get away with sports bras being chunky again lolol. It looks as it's supposed to with proper undergarments.)

On the left is my second coord ever from May 2013 (no pictures of the first thank god) and on the right is my (slightly casual?) coord from today.

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?
Since early 2012 so about 3 years now.
>What area have you improved the most in?
I think I'd say my coords have become neater and look a little less struggled-to-put-this-together-with-what-I-have.
>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
None so far. I've only been coming on for a couple months after all.
>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
Occasionally, I'll have a coord I really like, one I feel really proud of, but a good portion of my coords tend to feel a little meh to me. I'd rather frequently feel proud of them so that's what I'd like to work on next. Losing a little weight and learning how to pose would be nice too.

That before pic.. I'm not sure why I thought it looked so cute doing the "anime girl with closed eyes and peace sign" thing on pictures.

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?
About 5 years I think

>What area have you improved the most in?
Wig styling definitely

>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
I like the tutorial and help threads, they've helped me a bit.
I also learn from here from generally lurking in a lot of the threads and screenshotting important things.

wtf is wrong with you people? - What's with the extreme cattiness today? This is clearly a an improvement, pic on the right is a nice example of a well-balanced oldschool style coordinate. The left is quite awkward - very casual and plain shrug with an elegant classic dress, awkward and unbalanced blocks of white, very basic and not entirely flattering hairstyle...

You’re doing good anon, don't listen to the fuckheads on here - they appear from the woodwork now and again. All in all though, I find /cgl/ can be surprisingly decent and helpful.

Just because something is not OTT doesn't make it "boring". The pic on the left is clearly "old school" inspired and I think it looks good. I can't wait for OTT to die down. You get so used to seeing girls put on every accessory in the drawer and you think that is what it takes to make a good coord. A lot of times it turns into a hot mess. This girls coord actually looks wearable and not a costume.
>>
>>8688042
Your color matching on the right could be a better, but overall you've clearly improved a lot! Just matching your hues of brown would make a lot of difference in coord cohesiveness though! The wig suits you well and the posing is cute :)

The outfit on the right does not suit you. It's too small, the colors don't match each other, and the style of the items don't go together. I'm really not trying to be rude but It looks like you've recently become heavier and don't completely know what works and what doesn't yet on your body type. That OP is kind of notorious for boob loaf. I owned it once and had to let it go even though I was only a b cup and 85 cm.

First pic was my first ever meetup, I had to borrow an OP and didn't own a wig. My hedgehog bag is as old as I am, he's actually a backpack, I thought he looked better than he did. I don't have any more recent photos actually, I'm terrible like that.

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?

I've been a lurker for around 7 years and actually started wearing lolita just over 2 years ago.

>What area have you improved the most in?

I think I'm better now at general aesthetic eg. if something should look good in theory but just doesn't work I am better at noticing. Also I am better at planning accessories that go with more of my wardrobe.

>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?

I think especially nitpick threads have contributed to it, plus cold cut criticism is nice.

>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?

I need to get more accessories together, my coords stay simple generally. I also need to figure out which style of wig suits me best because depending on photo angle, full fringe doesn't suit me.

I think I'm leaning more towards classic now, I'm quite tall and a friend was amazing and sold me a Mary Magdalene OP (pic related) which is my favourite piece I own.

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?
I've lurked for over 7 years but this year and the last is when I've become truly involved with my local lolita/cosplay community

>What area have you improved the most in?
Probably realizing that "just because it's brand does't mean you look great" (re: 2010, that was an AP JSK and Btssb purse... I thought I was very ~loli~)

>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
Probably teaching me how to use taobao/other shopping services and making me realize that I need to be able to not only take criticism and use it to improve but to also not take that criticism too seriously as well, that sometimes you just gotta close your internet browser and not think so much about everything

>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
Instead of impulse buying something because it's cheap, readily available right this minute, and "might" be my size and instead save up and get something custom sized for example or be more patient in waiting for a piece I really love and that's really special. Not really a weak point but as a goal, I would really like to put together at least one gothic and one classic co-ordinate sometime next year. Right now my wardrobe looks like pastel AP vomit a la 2009.

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?
Since 2008, so, 7 years.

>What area have you improved the most in?
All of them? Hair/makeup especially, I guess.

>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
A lot - so much exposure to various outfits and what people criticize in outfits helped me develop a better eye for it. I was posted once with criticism early on (2008 or 2009, the criticism was extremely tame, as well, mostly just "this is cute, but not lolita") and it really did help me improve/see things differently.

>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
Ehhh more accessorizing, or making outfits more interesting than just standard JSK+BLOUSE formula... Also, trying to find more flattering outfits for my face-shape...

Here's progress using the same dress just for fun.

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?
I'll focus on Lolita since that's my pic.

I've been interested in jfashion since around 2008. I lurked lolita related threads like crazy, but I didn't have a lot of money to spend on it as a student. I always liked the style, but I wasn't sure if it would be for me. I started buying a lot of Liz Lisa in 2012. On a whim, I bought a dress from Bodyline just to see if I'd like it. Pic on the left is me trying it on. I didn't look great, but it wasn't hideous, so I went for it.
>What area have you improved the most in?
Everything? Probably taste though. I had to get over a lot of animu style clothing trends.
>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
Lurking concrit threads as well as inspiration threads has been really helpful. Nitpick threads are also nice because I'm still trying to close the gap between what seems like a good idea for a coord, but looks kind of bad irl. I notice a lot more details than I did before as well.
>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
I'd like to wear my stuff out more. I'm not in a comm because the nearest one is mostly students who don't live in the area and are vastly younger than me and also affiliated with the university's anime club which is an embarrassment.

2007ish
>What area have you improved the most in?
Everything. Growing up and getting more money really helped.
>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
Nitpick threads and COF threads are great for opinions on coords and learning what goes with what. I like the tough love concrit.
>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
Accessorizing. I could be better.

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?
I've been actively wearing Lolita fashion for about 4 years.
>What area have you improved the most in?
Using my natural har instead of wigs, transitioning from sweet into gothic, and creating comfortable coords to wear when I go out.
>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
I don't know if I can put it to words, but /cgl/ has played a major role on my improvement, I always like to read Anon's feedback, post my coords and follow the advice I get because I know there is no sugar coating nor asspatting going on unlike other lolita fashion-related sites.
>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
Originality, I tend to copy many trends and coords; also, I love using my natural hair ut I need how to make elaborate hairstyles; last but not least, accesorizing and staying away from complete sets.

Thanks. Haha I'm nowhere near that point, but I'm getting close to the obese range again as far as BMI is concerned. Plus I don't feel as strong, energetic or flexible as I did last year. I have to wear binders to just fit into most of my brand without maxing the shirring all the way out when it was quite comfortable before. At least that's motivation.

>What area have you improved the most in?
Pressing my seams while sewing. I wish someone told me sooner because everything looks so neat and clean now because of it.

>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
Progress threads are my main source of inspo and where I picked up a lot of small tricks. Bless all of you that post still.

>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
I want to meet people but I'm terribly self conscious. I need to buy more feet for my sewing machine and I should probably invest in more blouses and shoes for my wardrobe.

Coording in general? I'm much better at putting outfits together now, though I still have a lot of work to do.

>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?

Cgl has helped me realize what looks bad and tacky. It also provides me with a lot of lolita photos that give me inspiration.

>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?

My weight(I've recently started working on this with a workout routine and healthy eating), and better coording. I want to be better with coording before I actually buy brand.

About four/five years? I looked at it for ages before taking the plunge. Thought I looked hot shit in the first coord.
>What area have you improved the most in?
I think I've improved with colour balancing, and knowing how to match themes and add in little bits to make it look more uniform. That and finding cheap burando.
>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
Mostly for inspiration, like looking at other people's coords, how they matched colours, how to surf taobao and aliexpress... I think without /cgl/ i'd still be a massive ita.

My weight for sure. I put on a lot of weight due to hormone injection, stress, laziness and too many cookies. Got a gym membership but I haven't used it yet.

>>
>>8690874
It doesn't do much aside smoosh them and create a flatter look. Doesn't always work out better, but I will take it over strait up boobloaf. I've mostly been a con lolita lately because that's all I'm ever able to get off work for, so that means wearing my stuff for hours on end while doing artist alley. Not to mention my petti's are standard size CP ones and while they do stretch bigger than listed, I'm really pushing it. It rides up under the band of the binder and makes it really painful when I get out of it. Normally I'd just throw on my corset and not feel anything and have great posture and no back pain. I can't even wear it now with a lot of stuff because it adds 1 1/2 inch to my measurements. I'm not looking forward to the next two days.

But that said, if you want to try one, I'd recommend the underworks binder/sports bra. It actually works really well for running and keeping them in place. Don't go with the cheap ones on ebay. Those are painful and worthless.

Thankyou x I like elements of the newer looks but something in me always drags me back to simpler coords, contrasting or white lace trims etc. My wallet won't stretch to let me do proper old school or OTT justice most of the time but I have a little stab at current trends then retreat to cotton peter pan collar blouses for a bit

>>8693879

Thankyou so much! But can I just say I am the most awkward turtle in the world; I'm always fucking up and shitting myself on the inside, so if I come across as 'cool' to you I guess I've worked hard enough, but the last thing I want to do is be unapproachable or make someone else feel inadequate. Please don't let me make you feel too uncomfortable to be yourself. I think I'd like to talk to you, too but honestly I'm just as scared. Apologies for this not so artistic or eye pleasing collage.

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?
I've been in cosplay for 6/7 years now and Lolita just over a year!
>What area have you improved the most in?
General construction in putting things together and definitely make-up also.
>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
Inspiration and honest as hell feedback.
>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
Just continue to improve in general! Also get better when working with armor or large props. Posing/making my face shape more flattering (thanks shironuri for making my face look even more round) I need to work on as well.

1. feb 2014 my first coord oh god
2. around aug 2014 i didn't improve very much in my first year, and was a huge ita
3. oct 2015 my favourite coord
4. oct 2015 what seems to be my best coord

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?
since february 2014
>What area have you improved the most in?
posing, make up and matching things a little better
>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
i used to post in coord help but i think just looking at a lot of other people's coords in general has influenced what i think looks good. cof concrit has been helpful too, i like that people are honest and give me pointers on how to improve
>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
i was more adventurous with my coords at first, but seem to have fallen into being super matchy. i want to have the self confidence to experiment again

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?
about a year and a half but have been interested and buying it before I actually started.
>>What area have you improved the most in?
I honestly don't know really, I know I still need to work on accessorising though.
>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
I think coord help threads and inspo threads are the most helpful.
>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
Learning to accessorise and buy less skirts.

I've remade this cosplay twice with three different colour palettes and i'm not remaking it again.

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?
Cosplaying since 2011, conning since 2007
>What area have you improved the most in?
Patterning and construction.
>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
Harsh critique and honest opinions along with helpful tutorials have helped me considerably.
>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
Prosthetics, latex, and makeup

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?
Since around 2010. I admired lolitas from afar and lurked until 2013. Been wearing it for two years now and have finally settled into my own style.
>What area have you improved the most in?
Haha, uuhhh everything really. Mostly I've learned what looks good on my large chest.
>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
The brutal honesty def helped me. Sifting though ita and COF threads to see what looks good/bad and why.
>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
I'd like to be a little more adventurous/ experimental with my coords and lose a little weight. Also I could be better at posing.

BEHOLDDD!!!!

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?
Since my weeaboo days, 2006ish

>What area have you improved the most in?
I have definitely improved in being able to tell apart shit quality from reasonable quality.. however my normie wardrobe is now effected by this.

>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
If you dress like shit, you will get called out - STOP DRESSING LIKE SHIT. /cgl/ likes to be upfront and blunt, which I can appreciate..

>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
I need more matching themes.. I own a lot of stuff with the tags still attached because its unwearable due to me never having stuff to match it.

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?
I've been into the cosplay scene for almost 7 years now. Yoko was my first semi-self done cosplay, though.
>What area have you improved the most in?
I've improved a lot in sewing, which I'm super thankful for. I also learned how to make props, that's probably my best achievement.
>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
/cgl/'s inspired me to take better care of my weight. i was never "fat" but i see that my body wasn't flattering for mid drifts so i've started eating better and i'm working on a flat stomach. I've also gotten pickier about accuracy.
>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
Makeup for sure. I see i'm getting better the more I try though.

I'm in this comm and don't worry about feeling too awkward to talk to people. L & E are both lovely and have their awkward moments themselves - as do we all - so just approach people for a chat as it's a friendly comm!

>>8693104
Looking good - that dim light skirt is just perfect on you!

>How long have you been in the jfashion or cosplay scene?
Going on two years this december.

>What area have you improved the most in?
No sure, i think I've improved in lots of little ways.

>What role has /cgl/ played in your improvement so far?
Coord help threads are always useful to me.

>What weak point(s) do you want to work on next?
I need more accessories. I only just found my preferred lolita style, so now i need to get more quality jewelry, headdresses and things of the like. I'd also like to buy more boleros because i feel like they can really add to an outfit.

Everything in your current photo, from the coord to the expression, makes you look so cool and elegant!

>>8701749
Your right bottom coord is seriously one of my favorite coords of all time! How do you get the lighting in your room to be so even and flattering?
>>
>>8701761
Thank you!! My bedroom has two massive windows, and my mirror sits between them. it helps so much with bright, natural lighting.
>>
>>8687716
You are awesome, keep it up.
>>
>>8701749
Where is the bottom right wig from/what model?
>>
>>8701749
you look so much better in classic and light colors, I hope that's your new preferred style

I can't even imagine you in sweet any more, such a switch matie, you looked good in both though.
>>
>>8701863
My preferred is still gothic and dark classic hehe, but i'm building up a light classic wardrobe for summer and spring now that i'm working and have the funds for multiple styles.
>>8701860
Lockshops mermaid! i forgot the colour though.
>>
>>8690123
It would be better if you had full body shots to see more of your shoes. But it's a slight improvement with the wigs and wearing OPs
>>
>>8698853
your paint looks the worst on ur current. Why yellow?
>>
>>8700595
hey I follow you on instagram, your progress is amazing!
>>
>>8686881
desu I liked your old coord better.
>>
>>8688548
Yeah I'm trying to figure out better ways to colour my eyebrows white, I've seen cosplayers like Knitemaya use white facepaint so I considered trying that out or something.
Also they should be greyish since his eyebrows are that originally but yeah, it's difficult with thick black brows haha. Thank you tho!
>>
>>8698853
I think you'd benefit from better facial expressions, but nice work!
