Still talking camp food...

It's an 8-day camp. The idea is to use leftovers and boil out bones as much as possible. The first few days are easy because refrigeration still holds.

Mears' roasted salmon > fish soup
Roast chicken > stir fry > chicken salad + chicken soup
Breakfast pancakes > sliced pancakes in soup
Beef soup > stew

The veg will be fresh and pickled cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, paprika, cucumber, and mushrooms. Maybe the occasional baked potato.

I know how to make my sourdough rye, but I need inspiration for sweets. Should I just consult Jas Townsend, or does someone have a good idea?
>>
>>8852427
bring honey for sweeten things. If you have a little flour and various other things you can even bake something on a campfire.

Also we once made doughnuts on campfire too and somewhere I have a recipe for a cake made in a cauldron
>>
>>8852443
Yes, everything would be baked in a fire.

I had good results with a clay pot and maybe I can afford my dutch oven this year.

Doughnuts are a mess, takes lots of lard. And I am not comfortable heating that much grease over an open flame. But they ARE delicious when fresh!

Most US games in my experience are hitpoint based.

>>8853253
It really depends on what you mean. Part of the fun of LARPing is playing someone who is not yourself, but it can be very hard to give your character different limitations.
For example, I am scared of heights. I could climb that tree but it will take a long time and I will be very cautious about it. I would never play a character who loves to climb trees, because I cannot represent it. Plus, the attempt to pretend I love climbing trees would throw me out of character.

I found playing a character got a lot easier once I embraced my OOG flaws into game.

When creating a character, try to flow (at least somewhat) with the things you cannot change about yourself. Work them into your character, but give them different reasons for it than you.

In the long run, HLF is correct. Don't play a character that you cannot pull off.

What specifically are you having trouble with?

At this point, there's literally one character left that's been playing constantly at the local LARP, a PC who at this point is a literal greybeard.

That's 25 years of everyone around him going down for the count. Now he's an old knight, but you don't get to be old without being good.

I have all sorts of types, specifically this was about 'tough' characters. (Best example I can come up with is Graves from League of Legends but this archetype is probably anywhere.)
Sorta feels like I can't pull off the voice and demeanor that one would need, and DESU I'm not entirely sure what archetype would be best for OOG me.
>>
>>8854603
Natural social reticence is one of the hardest ones to work past, imo.

I suggest you begin a character who is as tough as you are naturally capable of being, with the goal of becoming MORE tough. Through roleplay, you may be able to expand your abilities over time. Study the people who have the traits you want and copy them (though don't do it too much- especially for tough characters this can make you seem edgy).

> and DESU I'm not entirely sure what archetype would be best for OOG me.
Obviously I don't know you anon, but think about what you feel are you best traits. Give your character those archetypal traits, but for very different reasons. Take what flaws you perceive in yourself and then add some more- flaws are a lot easier to add than good traits.

Above all, have a really, really good reason for your traits. If you want to play a tough character, but are not naturally tough, you need to sit down and think seriously about *why* they are tough and exactly how they are tough, since just saying "they are tough" won't work for you.
>>
What's your thought on LARPs having a Role Play Forum/Facebook page? I'm starting to get a little sick of my larp in part due to all the important political decisions being made on the RP page without any risk of being stabbed on the spot for saying something really stupid.

I have a bit of a mad idea of some kind of in-universe 'postal system' where people roleplay over written correspondence phrased like snail mail, basically through a web-mail system. One brilliant/moronic idea I also had was a time delay system based on the distance between where the heck in the setting your were mailing to and from.

I might be thinking too much over this.
>>

What does 'edgy' mean and why is it bad?? I hear it rather often, sometimes in a good but most of the time in an especially bad context.

I've got reasons background-wise, although I may change it if I see I cannot pull it off. Not trying to get him stupid-tough (i.e. being surrounded by 5 orc warriors and decide to fight because 'I fear nothing, punk'.),
Just have some intimidating, serious attitude.
>>
>>8854812
It's hard to define edgy, in the negative context.

I think the best way to put it is someone who tries very hard to be cool in a angst, dark, or tough way when it is immediately obvious that they are incapable of backing it up. Usually it includes the edgy person belligerently believing that they are just as cool as they want to be.

Take a typically cool, 'dark' character, and then make a hopeless nerd play it who refuses to even slightly admit that they are incapable of being that person, and they have become a tryhard edgelord.

Intimiation is not an easily learned skill. If your intent is to intimidate and you are not certain you are able to be intimidating, I recommend you avoid this character concept. Nothing is more cringeworthy and embarrassing than someone failing at being intimidating.
>>
>>8854827
I see. There's plenty of time for that game, so I'll either work hard enough to learn how to pull it off well, or drop it like you suggested. Thank you!
>>
One of my friends shared this. Figured it was worth making y'all aware as well: [gofundme dot com slash]savelarparchery

TL;DR
>Archery tag guy decides to patent padded arrowheads
>Sues small retailer who is selling them for LARP use
>Our lawsuit system is fucked up
>This means the richer guy can basically hold the case forever and force the retailer to concede when he runs out of money

I have a lot of faith in my country to improve our LARPs, I don't want to be stuck back at carrying bow props and throwing packets.

>What's your thought on LARPs having a Role Play Forum/Facebook page?
role play facebook page is completely unfit for this. Facebook is simply shit to do longer coherent conversations between more than two people.

Forums can be useable but highly depends on the rules and the people.

For the game last weekend we used something different, it was basically "played" through emails with two week turns. Every faction could do various amount of actions with varying level of success, sent them in an email to the organizer and when the end of the turn come the organizer sent back to everyone the results and the publicly seen stuff were also announced. There were an abstract resource too but we tried to keep it as simple as possible
Then again this system at the end was heavily stretching it's limit and because of a lot of players had different views on how stuff works in the world there were a few drama moments because of this (and because what happened on the game)
>>
>>8854916
NERO banned archery since years. Nothing big news about this.
I know that this is now different but when I see that a lot poople over there see that factory made arrow heads are way more dangerous than what THEY make, and a lot of larps require you to padd the arms of the bows or even doesn't use arrows but throw spell packets... Larping is taking advantage of people who don't read the suit and just watch the video.

That's a shame, it would be nice to see tutorial videos or something. Ill keep looking,
>>
>>8857490
In my experience most of the awesome stuff are way too specific to have a tutorial. People aren't really considering that others want to do the exact same thing because everyone is playing their own characters.
Or in other cases it's just some medieval clothing with good accessories that needs only a pattern and that's all.

There are some Tumblr blogs that are picture collections (though it sounds like you already found those).
Individual costumers sometimes have costuming blogs, but the best ones I've found are mostly 19th century and Edwardian.
HLF is correct that there aren't really any 'famous' LARPers (other than Frenadian, and that's not the kind of fame you want).

Thanks for the reply, sorry for leaving it so long. I'm familiar with silver smithing as my Mother is a fine art's jeweler, grew around it actually. Because of this I'm pretty sure I don't want to get into it right now, don't really want to complicate what I do more I guess. Sorry to be that guy.

I'm playing around with the idea of making some viking stuff, it certainly is popular. I'm concerned the market is saturated because of that though.

One of the ideas I'm playing with is using some gold toned flower and leaf connector "charms" to make necklaces inspired by some found in the cheapside hoard. Paint them with enamal paints.

What I'm a bit stumped about is what semi-precious stones to use. Other then pearls I was thinking jet, carnelian, garnet, and clear quartz. It's kinda a limited pallet though.

Like Shea said, I don't post that much. I'm more of a seamstress/history enthusiast then a larper so what I have to offer in the thread is limited. I also haven't had much time to make anything new or attend any events. I want to change this.

I do still lurk though.

>Looks like a great larp, I love the photos of the different houses. As usual I kinda feel like the women are a bit lax in their costumes compared to you fellows. (other then the lady in dark red, she looks great).
well the women on my team has a good reason.
As you said the women in the dark red dress has no problems, she was my characters wife.

The woman who looks like an assassin was the servant of my characters wife, her costume was a slightly modified assassin creed cosplay. It was her first larp ever and after consulting with the organizer it was decided that her costume fits the larp after removing the assassin signs.

The woman with the dog was my seneschal. She simply left her costume at home out of mistake and we had to borrow spare cloths from others so she could play. She is the blind girl I sometimes talk about.

Also the guy in the landsknecht cloths was my characters cousin who I kept with me because he was good with a sword and he was kind of infamous of starting duels and ending them with the other guys death even if it was for first blood. Some people even said I was assassinating people this way but that's obviously a lie

Viking Leathercraft goes up to a size 14 on most models, and they are willing to do custom work. They are extraordinarily waterproof (we recently had an event during the rainiest day of the year and my socks were dry!) and they very affordable.

Knight is a big word and means nothing really. You gotta think about who your character is as a person, and what knighthood entails for the setting your playing in. What is his culture like? Whats are the expectations for a knight in the culture?

Again, the name is totally nebulous too. Where is the knight from?

So, after lurking these threads for a while, I'm into the idea. However, from where I am, most of the LARPs around here either seem dead or are just a bunch of nerds who meet in a field outside their community college and hit each other with foam noodles. I'm not too keen on hanging out with the people of Trimaris either from what I've heard/seen. For now, at least, I want to stick to costuming and some form of armoring.
I've gone through a few of the archived threads over the past week or so looking for info and guides, and I found quite a few that helped my ideas. Tarantula's short guide on color and emphasis, for example, helped quite a lot.
However: I'm a guy who has little experience in most costuming fields outside of woodworking and making small chainmail bits. My idea is to start roughly with late 12th/early 13th century-style gear.
Outside of a sleeveless surcoat or tabard, what can I start with for sewing?
How many yards of a fabric should I get if I wanted to make, say, a basic shirt? Long braies?
If I make a hauberk or chausses, butted or riveted? Should I work for quilted or leather cuisses?

I've already told myself I don't want to buy many, if any parts of the costume pre-made.
>>
>>8863050
>Outside of a sleeveless surcoat or tabard, what can I start with for sewing?
headgears are basically easy and you can practice on them a lot. Also makes you stylish.
Later you can try a hose or something similar, those are really hard to get it right (that is, if you want them to be form fitting)

>How many yards of a fabric should I get if I wanted to make, say, a basic shirt? Long braies?
3 meters should be enough if you aren't a really big dude. But probably 2 meters could be enough too. depends on size.

>If I make a hauberk or chausses, butted or riveted?
for a larp? If you value your time butted. If you have no life and can't sleep during the nights then riveted.

>Should I work for quilted or leather cuisses?
quilted is cheaper to work with and somewhat on the same difficulty level (it's difficult in a different way) Also easier to paint.

And I presume you already found the medieval tailors assistant
>>
>>8863050
I actually recommend you buy your shirt. You'll waste time and money making one, when there are already plenty of acceptable ones on the market. Homemade shirts (especially ones made by novices) fall apart extremely easily. Spend your efforts on your statement items like your surcoat and other regalia.

You can, however, make your braies. The amount of fabric depends on how tall you are, but you shouldn't need more than 3 yrds (I always over-estimate the amount of fabric I need, and then the rest just goes in my scrap bin).

If you have the time and the sheer willpower to do riveted chainmaille, do riveted.

>I've already told myself I don't want to buy many, if any parts of the costume pre-made.
Again, totally suggest you don't hold too heavily to that. Everything homemade will look very nice and unique, but you will lose durability and if your fitting skills aren't up to snuff you can run into issues. Making costuming, especially just setting out, is extremely frustrating.

I try a hood for that universal medieval swag, then. On the subject of butted vs. riveted I figured you guys would say the former- I'm not expecting to ride with Louis the Fat into battle.
And yeah, I have been reading the assistant.

>>8863072
Again, I'm just more into the costuming practice for right now especially since my friends aren't too keen on doing anything like this so far. Mostly I just plan on working on stuff that looks good and can hold up well enough.
And on that last bit: I'm obviously not going whole hog and trying to make everything from scratch, especially footwear. That was just a way of saying I don't want to be a cosplay company's posterboy.

Thanks for the quick advice!
>>
>>8863120
I will go against Tarantula here and agree that you should make your own shirt.
it's realatively easy to make and you can learn the ropes with it. Especially the armpits part which will be a nightmare for more complex or padded stuff.
>>
>>8863164
>>8863120
HLF is right. Making a shirt will give you a crash course in every, single, possible way you can fuck up sewing ever forever.

Since it doesn't sound like you're in a hurry, go for it. Have fun with dem armpit gussets. You will be a much better costumer by the time you are finished.

>butted vs. riveted
You don't *need* riveted stuff for LARP, but it is unarguably nicer. A lot of people who make a chainmaille bracelet come in here saying they want to make riveted shirts without understanding the sheer amount of mindnumbing tedious toil that goes into that kind of thing.

>cosplay company
fyi, don't buy LARP gear from cosplay companies. There are good gear companies out there.

>12thC French
>Plate armour

Got some bad news for you, Norman.
>>
>>8867469
It's a fantasy setting that takes inspiration from eras for costume rather than being historical. Dawn is 12 - 15th century, high chivalric inspired. So plate is in brief.
>>
>>8867472
So why mention 12thC explicitly?
>>
>>8867507
I should have been more clear I suppose. It was more to show the difference in look from what I currently have to what I now need.

Figured this was a good place to ask.

The linen "crown" on this knights head... that's called a "torse" right? Anyone know how to make those, and how to make them stick to the helmet?
I've looked at a few images and they seem like such a mystery to me. Do you really just tie them to the helmet? That doesn't make sense with a few others I've seen.

Thanks in advance!

I post this a couple times now. You should always check the archive first.

Here you go. Torse and mantle, from the Revised SCA Fighter's Handbook, circa 1989.

meanwhile, just so we can laugh at shit tier stuff from hungary too, not just from the US.

At the same time when the larp was held where those pictures were made >>8854378 there was another... game.
They like to call themselves a larp but honestly it's just an overglorified boffer tag, with no characters, only teams (you aren't even allowed to separate from your team) and little to no roleplay.
Anyway here are some of the pics they put on the net
>>
most of the equipment are literally unchanged in the last 4 years. Like the spears.

around here this is literally the worst game that still consideres itself a larp and still exists.... apart from vampire games but those are a different subject

That vaguely celtic elf has pretty good taste in shields.
>>
>>8867796
>vaguely celtic
Well, that's the catch. They are supposed to be a celtic reenactor group, and the best they otherwise manage is "vaguely celtic". But on every larp they go, they refer to themselves as "the celts". No such thing exists in the game world? They are the celts regardless.
>>
>>8867796
that vaguely celtic elf is a vaguely reenactor* guy who allegedly reenacts* celtic stuff. So is the rest of the elves. And this is mostly the same stuff they use for the reenacting*

*according to them
>>
>>8867697
>vampire games
I kind of need to hear about this. Only vampire stuff around here are edgy emo/scene teens hanging out together pretending they're vampires that feed off energy and blood.

Of course, there was that one infamous highschool 'werewolf' pack that got featured on the news. They wore tails and collars to schools and had an alpha girl that later killed a neighbor's dog and decapitated it and put pictures of it online because she was 'into taxidermy'.

there aren't much emo/scene girl in vampire larps here, more wannabe goths though and edgy dark persons.
Plus a fuckton of retards. Mostly retards.
There are a lot of different group though so qualities greatly vary, some of them decent enough, some of them a little on the idiotic side, some of them are full retard.
And some of them look like this
>>
>>8867812
>And this is mostly the same stuff they use for the reenacting
Does that include the ears?

>>8867811
>But on every larp they go, they refer to themselves as "the celts". No such thing exists in the game world? They are the celts regardless.
They sound like faggots but I'm one to talk, I show up to any fantasy game in full Roman gear though I never call myself Roman in game.
>>
>>8867837
no, doesn't include the ears and the leather armours. I would like to say that it doesn't include the spear either but I'm not that sure about it, sometimes "reenactors" here like to use boffers as a perfect "weapon simulator". These are usually the same people who then talk shit about larps.

>They sound like faggots but I'm one to talk
Let's just say we have stories about them. Like when they shit next to our tents.
>>
>>8867835
If this wasn't labeled 'vamp1' I would have just wondered if this was some joke about a wizard, a zombie, and victims of a car accident walk into a bar.
>>
>>8867842
>Like when they shit next to our tents.
On purpose or are they just that idiotic to think that it was a good place to go?

you underestimate the power of vampire lives (because they aren't larps, they are LIVEs all uppercase. And it's somehow better than larp. Don't ask)
>>
>>8867859
It's very hard to shit right literally next to a tent and then leave the toilet paper there, by accident.
