DISCUSSION PROMPT: Did you do anything princely for Halloween? What special occasion, meetup, or brand release are you looking forward to next?
>>
>>8697142
Do other gulls do long hair or short hair for ouji? I've seen both
>>
boyfriend was going to do his first boystyle coord on Halloweem for a meet but none of his clothes came in on time. I felt really bad cause it was his first time hanging out with the group but he looked handsome in normalfag gentleman clothes. If anyone had any U.S. shops to recommend that doesn't take 28383828 years to ship that would be so helpful!
>>
>>8697142
>Did you do anything princely for Halloween?
i attended a mid-October Halloween meetup, and explored downtown in a simpler ouji coord for Halloween. a beggar complimented my outfit.

>What special occasion, meetup, or brand release are you looking forward to next?
my first ILD. i feel that i should wear something special or new so i will budget for another secondhand haul.

>>8697195
do what works best for you. i do short hair.

>>8697209
how big is your boyfriend?
>>
>>8697232
he's petite I'd say not sure on specifics
>>

>If anyone had any U.S. shops to recommend that doesn't take 28383828 years to ship that would be so helpful!
Where were you trying to order clothing from that it took so long to receive? I live in US and Japanese shops/services with EMS shipping take like three-four days to get in the mail.
>>
>>8697250
get a flat measurement, in centimeters, of his best-fittint clothes. if a shirt that fits him well is under 42cm across the shoulders, and/or the waistband of a good pair of pants is 80cm or under (around), definitely hit up Japanese shops. like >>8697260 says, they ship pretty fast via EMS.

which led me to look for ouji in GLB scans, which led me to this blog: http://ouji-armoire.tumblr.com

i am checking out their tag system now and it looks great so far. you can search for images and coords by color, theme, brand, etc. i hope the blog stays active because there is nothing like it for boystyle as far as i know!

I'm still looking for a place to buy clothes for my first casual-ouji-coord. I kind of learned few brand names and general idea already thanks to nice anons here, but finding shopping places is hard.
>>
>>8697142
I wore three different outfits this last week, which is a record for me. One was new but unfinished, one I had already worn to a meet months ago, and the last was completely new.
As for hair I prefer shoulder length or shorter. Reason? I am terrible at taking care of long wigs. They tangle so easily and I don't have the patience to comb them out properly.

also nice to know you are a gull, lone ouji vlogger

>you look more Rice than Meyers btw
>>
>>8697718
for casual ouji/oujiable brands, yahoo japan auctions will be your best bet.

unless you are large-sized, then try for a dolly-kei-ish version by thrifting nice vintage clothes near you and altering hem lengths, adding simple trim, etc.
>>
>>8697776

ayyyy anon, haha I like the sound of that lone ouji vlogger. There are other ouji vloggers out there they just barely produce content. It get lonely out here some times.

> Im incredibly flattered
>>
>>8697868
i and at least one other ouji anon want to vlog, but do not for privacy/profession reasons.

i may vlog the seagull secret santa stuff, treating it like an unboxing video to post on or after Christmas. i plan this as a foot in the door video to warm myself up to the idea of making vlogs.
>>
>>8698100
Thats understandable.

You should definitely do it! I'd watch it.
>>
>>8697801
Do yahoo auctions ship to Europe? Should I try typing brand names or is there a general ouji tag? Thank you (in advance).
>>
>>8697801
Also Idk how do I into dolly-kei. There are no vintage clothes in place I'm living in rn.
>>
>>8698912
I highly doubt that.

> Where there are old people
> There is old clothes

Find a thrift shop or antique craft mall. Churches tend to run thrift stores for extra funds and donation practices.

Its understandable not completely knowing how to do the fashion but take time to gather images of dolly kei that you like and try to emulate it. Thats how you learn.
Plus thrifting is fun and all but I requires a good eye and time to dig.
>>
>>8698907
you would need to use a shopping service, and EU can levy some shitty customs taxes.

there are many guides on how to buy lolita secondhand, and the advice will work just as well for ouji.
>>
>>8699250
In place I'm cirrently living there are no thrift shops, but taxes aren't that hard as long as you don't use courier or stuff like shipping services. I've googled some & they don't ship here anyways.
>>
>>8700710
dang. ClosetChild seems like they will ship anywhere and they are very reliable. do you mind saying where you live? is there a lot of disruption of mail that would make international businesses hesitant? i know some stopped delivering to Ukraine because of the turmoil.
>>
>>8701043
That website looks good.
>almost 2k円 for a shipment of a single item
I-I'll have to save on candies and sweets to buy ouji, being a prince will require some work.

I'm living in slightly less important part of EU right now but nothing like Ukraine or any of dangerous countries, so if website has international shipping it'll certainly work.

I'm really new at ouji and lolita in general. So I've been wondering if anyone had any suggestions on accessories to go with this? >>8704582

Not really too sure about do's and don'ts about the fashion when it comes to accessories. Also any other help is great too!
>>
>>8704874
Feels like you're missing little things, and that it could use more gold. I definitely think a lapel pin or brooch, possibly a pocket watch on a long necklace chain depending on how big you go with said lapel pin, and even consider a brooch pinned onto the jabot just above where the chain is sitting. Hair wise you could consider a gold floral corsage with white ostrich feathers, although that will make the outfit very feminine., and having the wig as it is is also ok
>>
>>8704874
I saw this on insta!
The thing missing the most to me is accessories like gold and white enamel rings and maybe some decorative pins in the wig. White tights with some sort of sheer pattern would look nice.
What would slay me is switching out your glasses for thin gold frames with a decorative gold idiot-chain.
>>
>>8704935
>>8704986
Aaaah. Thanks for the help! Also slightly flustered you actually saw it on Instagram! Definitely will keep those in mind when I'm shopping.

As for the glasses suggestion, I was thinking of getting prop ones for whenever I do a photoshoot or something! My eyesight is horrendous so I couldn't survive with fake glasses haha
>>
>>8705005
Np. I'm not one of those "your glasses ruin the coord you should go blind!!!1!" People, but having a matching prop pair for photos would get you an A+
Do you have shoes figured out yet?
>>
>>8705967
Not really. I've been looking around for white or gold (more partial with gold), but it's really hard not to find one TOO girly.

anyone else tired of the huge gold trim on many boystyle releases? it looks too formal for regular wear. i would feel like i was in costume going to tea in most AatP items.

it's a great idea. not my style but the pieces can be used versatilely enough so that it is not only a character-themed coord.

I was wondering if there are any taobao or indie brands that have released any jackets or coats in a similair aesthetic to atelier boz or moi meme moitie? I'm not looking for replicas. not indie, but h. Naoto sometimes releases jackets like that, pic related. Black Peace Now/BPN for Men also had many, which come up often on Japanese secondhand sites and auctions and can be more affordable.

also look for Ozz On/Ozz Croce and Gadget Grow.

45cm is pushing it for Japanese brands but i have seen some go around that big. not often, though.

i do not know what style specifically you would like, but alice auaa is a high quality gothic brand whose pieces are well-made and often expensive.

this coat is only 16k yen and the shoulders are listed as 51cm, which is the widest i have seen in a Japanese brand.

no it's not. aristocrat isn't lolita, it's a different fashion all together plus there is aristocrat for females too. boystyle is just ouji since it's easier to say boystyle instead of little prince. only recently did you retards start using them the same.
>>
>>8726533
unlike in lolita, there is a lot of overlap between ouji and aristocrat. having one word to refer to both would be nice.

additionally, outside of Moitie brands don't seem to use "aristocrat." it's all just ouji/prince/boystyle. see >>8697492 for example.

like i said, terminology is balls for this fashion. "boystyle" seems like a fine middle ground for discussions that involve the range of masculine lolita-related styles, but if you have an alternate suggestion, propose it.
>>
>>8726581
there are atleast 2 brands other than MMM that sell both lolita and aristocrat, and you know, aristocrat styles have their own brands. my "proposal" is that we just have threads for ouji and also for aristocrat for both genders since it seems stupid to include aristocrat in 'boystyle' and also have an aristocrat thread.
>>
>>8726531
No, it's really not. There's nothing boyish about aristocrat.
>>
>>8726590
do they call it "aristocrat" or just "gothic"? links or caps would help your argument.

It's Aristocrat. it's a different fashion. It's Japan's anwer to romantic goth and is actually older than lolita. I can't believe you're so fucking new.

i think you misunderstand the use of "older" there. it is not literally older, and you will not find Japanese publications referring to what we call "aristocrat" as anything but gothic, lolita, or prince. when fyeahlolita says it's the older cousin, she means it's more mature.
>>
>>8726615
additionally, the fyeahlolita page for Boystyle includes Aristocrat, so that's another reason it's not the best source to fall back on for your argument.
>>
>>8726628
i think she meant romantic goth is older than lolita, anon...

if anon had said "which is," that would have been my interpretation, but they said "and is."

>>8726615
>It's Japan's anwer to romantic goth and is actually older than lolita.

the "and" cannot refer to "romantic goth" here, it clearly refers to "It" (aka aristocrat). of course romantic goth is older than lolita, you would have to be complerely ignorant to think otherwise.

In this case, "boystyle" refers not to boyish youthfulness, but to being the masculine counterpart to a feminine style. So boystyle lolita would be ouji, while boystyle aristocrat would be male aristocrat.

We're not ageplayers.

There isn't a big enough distinct userbase for each on /cgl/ to get their own general. We've discussed them together before without an issue, and no one is really losing anything by keeping the thread open to both styles. It's just pedants being pedants.
>>
>>8726631

Palace of Princes uses boystyle as an umbrella term for ouji and aristocrat as well.

Are there any relatively decent F+F ouji pieces? I know the general concensus is that their quality is pretty meh but I saw their bat vest and I'm interested. Is there anyone here who owns ouji pieces from them (or even the bat vest) that can give their input?
I'm new to the fashion and the few pieces I have so far are second-hand taobao from sales groups (which can take loads of time till someone is selling something interesting for me) and modified Bodyline. I can't justify expensive ouji purchases since I don't wear it regularly so I was wondering about F+F or if I'm just better off buying from taobao and second hand. Thanks!
>>
>>8728696
sorry, i do not have experience with F+F. but have you ever tried to order from Japanese secondhand sites? prices can be comparable to taobao and even Bodyline, if you can fit the standard sizes.

i would suggest to avoid anything satiny or shiny, and watch out for low-quality lace. but i think the quality of many items must be at least as good as Bodyline or F+F, so consider checking here if you are too large for brand.
>>
has anyone purchased these F+F pants and know how the fabric quality is like? I have a couple of IW tops/vests that I want to coord with puffy pants + beret and these are the only ones I can find that come in brown and are cut like pants and not bloomers.

was thinking to ask them to remove the belts on the leg openings and add pockets if they don't really have them, but yeah, I'm not sure about the fabric quality and if we can ask them to use better fabric (I don't mind paying more for good basic pants)

so if anyone knows/owns anything from F+F please let me know what you think of their fabric quality! thanks

http://store.lolitacollective.com/collections/wigs?page=1

All Lockshop boystyle wigs in the above link are $30, down from $40. These are part of the infamous Anime Matsuri Wig Crisis of 2015.

Review of Lockshop's Prince wig:

It is very fluffy, and has a feminizing effect. If you are going for a bishounen look, it might be a good choice. If not, I would not recommend this wig.

The wig fibers are soft and I have not had a problem with them tangling. However, as a novice styler, I feel out of my league. Compared to the stock image, the length is more uniform around the wig, without a defined bang area, and the wig in general tends to fluff out at the sides. I think I will need to trim mine significantly to get it to lay the way I want.

It may be worth the sale going on today, especially if you are not a novice styler. The fibers are very nice and the color is gorgeous. For those reasons, I wish it worked better for me, but the wig's fluffiness is a serious matter to contend with.
>>
I have a problem: My hair is long and thin and I have sensitive scalp. I would use wigs but my head starts hurting easily. Does someone know good hairstyles for me that would fit ouji or should I just buy lots of hats to hide my hair?

what do you think about the hairstyles posted upthread?

for thin hair, look for styles that create the illusion of volume. this usually means short along the back and sides and layered on top. if you keep longer sections, you have more styling options as well. if you get highlights that will also help add to the illusion of volume.

however, since you may want to keep the length, i will post some long haired boystyle coords.

this one is more costly but also more cohesive. maidenclothing has a Cock Robin AatP set in navy: matching ladies size vest and shorts, with unisex tie. the blouse is also AatP and is off-white to match the print (but it is men's size). you can remove the navy bow to use the Cock Robin tie instead.

not a coord, but some quick links:

Excentrique military shirt, over 8,000 yen, probably out of your budget. 42cm shoulders, could work on its own or under a coat.
http://www.maidenclothing.net/s/search/detail.php?id=154058941001

BPN for Men simple white shirt with pointed collar and strap embellishment. 1,620 yen, 44cm shoulders. perfect for layering with coats, jackets, vests, etc. it's nothing fancy, but the pointed collar is a gothic touch you will not find in an average dress shirt. http://www.maidenclothing.net/s/search/detail.php?id=154050521001

>closetchild
BPN for Men high-collar white shirt. looks like the type of collar you can keep buttoned up high, or unbutton and fold to have more typical lapels. 1,800 yen, 44cm shoulders. might be a weird fabric. http://www.closetchildonlineshop.com/phone/product/88644

>wunderwelt
BPN for Men black asymmetrical blouse. over 5,000 yen so possibly over your budget, but nicer than the other two BPN blouses. 45cm shoulders and unique details. pic related. http://www.wunderwelt.jp/products/detail5519.html

if you make an account with FromJapan, you can broaden your shop lists by using them as a shopping service. they offer package markdowns and can hold your items up to a month for free, so if you get something out of your budget you have a month to save for shipping/customs. i think most of my stuff has come from ClosetChild stalking (good boystyle vanishes fast) or yahoo auctions. you can get great deals with auctions, so a shopping service can be worth it.

first, dress for your body type. if what you're wearing fits and flatters you, you can get away with a lot.

second, look to historic fashion for your inspiration. a lot of ouji calls back go Rococo fashion, so focus on that rather than the schoolboy look. "Grabdpa Adel" from Life's Sweet Essentials pulls this off well, and his age actually adds to his princely look.

historically, princes have come in all shapes, sizes, and ages. the kawaii shota look may not look good on you, but something akin to pic related could. to keep from just looking like a historic fashion reenactor, add flair with matching brand (major or indie) accessories, like jabots, bow ties, and jewelry. also look for printed legwear you won't stretch out; short, fitted breeches with eye-catching socks and dapper boots are very ouji.

that looks pretty cool. it's not ouji--could use more matching, and a more modern fit/fabric, for example--but you seem to be starting from a decent background.

look for accessories made by brands like Excentrique (jabots, berets, brooches) and VooDoooDolly (US-based quality jewelry/accessories with a dark twist, pic related). i think they could fit the more mature rococo/history-influenced side of ouji. also be on the lookout for rossettes and sashes; some Etsy folk handmake them, as do indie designers like Mossbadger (rosettes anyway), and some lolita brands release them as well.

finally, for inspo, check out hominidwatching on tumblr. he is one of the boystylers who gets posted a lot and he wears more historic-inspired fashion than straight up jfash.

First shot at a boystyle coord. Normally I'm a sweet-classic style lolita but it's fun to change things up once in a while.

Concrit/suggestions would be much appreciated!
>>
>>8741636
Oh, def not ouji, just one of the closer things I've done (though now I'm wondering if that coat is remotely coord-able - it has many hours of my life in it, and the fit is more flattering when it doesn't have a billion layers under it)

hominidwatching seems to have abandoned his tumblr and deleted fashion stuff sadly :( though I found some shots on his SO's tumblr. I may go hunting for some more ouji inspo tumblrs though.

this looks like a coord from coordisnap/codenote! i think it looks good. what's up with the layers under the waistcoat? the clashing patterns give it a punky look that you could bring out elsewhere.
>>
>>8742808
Oh I'm glad you think so!
The layers are a modified ruffly skirt lol (it's an atternating pattern of small polka dots and stripes of tiny embroidered flowers).
I definitely wouldn't mind giving a few more punk elements, though I'm kinda unsure on how to do that. You think possibly a change in shoes and a few more accessories would do that trick? Personally just want to avoid making it look too cluttered haha.

sorry anons looking for feedback, i will return, but first: results of my research into the origins of the neologism kodona.

the issue is a dead horse by now but for anyone interested in history, i want to share to discussions on EGL about it, from 2005. they both boil down to an OP asking: "My Japanese lolita friend has no idea what 'kodona' means, and I can't find it on Japanese websites. What gives?" followed by various comments about how ouji is the correct term (though one Japanese lolita friend says no one calls it anything because it's rare), but fans of Plastic Tree started using it because it seemed to fit and was easier to pronounce than oujikei/oujisama.

this discussion specifically pinpoints the origin of the term to a mailing list circa 2002: http://egl.livejournal.com/2370169.html#comments, which is backed up by this older discussion: http://egl.livejournal.com/1285136.html#comments

the second discussion involves an OP with a Japanese lolita friend, the one who (in the comments) claims the style has no name (despite magazines and brands using "ouji"; make of her claim what you will): http://egl.livejournal.com/2006654.html#comments

apparently it is a horse that has been dead at least 11 years, but it persists in style guides, tags, comm names, etc., sparking explanations and debate. since the true origins of the term "lolita" are unknown and controversial, i am glad to find more solid records of our own terms.

kind of hope the use of "kodona" is phased out completely so the international community can match the categories released by brands and fashion mags. but at least we're not faggots, as the style seems known in China.

Based, sorry for late reply. I might get that asymmetrical blouse, if not I'll for sure get the the cool collared one next time I order of CC, which will hopefully be soon. I keep seeing dream-pieces sold out on closetchild ($200 granny smith vest, $200 thaddeus) and just found out they put a lot of their stuff up on auction sites first, so I'm going to try to pick through those next round.

I've been keeping an eye out for pieces to pioneer 'erouji' without just being nouji, but it's hard to find blouses like this that fit. Hopefully I manage to get my hands on one of these vests before I'm 30 and can't look like a schoolboy anymore.

in my opinion, pic related could be considered decent ero ouji. the deep/romantic neckline and ZR legwear give the outfit an erotic feel while maintaining class.

>schoolboy
Christ I don't mean ageplay, I just meant youthful in general. I meant my ability to look 16-20 is going to get worse the thicker and greyer my beard comes in.

>>8747267
These are.. poor examples. I guess you can go the shota route but.. it's in poor taste. I'd basically be taking a shot at 'sexy vampire prince' and trying to make it ouji enough to stay away from aristo and vkei.

>>8747275
This is closer to what I was thinking, I would just experiment with how 'ero' it could go without looking terrible. I'm confident I could pull it off, or at least cause a large argument about whether or not I pulled it off.. it's just a matter of finding suitable pieces.

went a little crazy. about 45,000 yen pirate coord off of Alice Fururun. ditch the hat and shoes and necklace and it drops to around 20,500. i do not know why this giant fluffy hat with its giant feather is worth 10,000 yen, but it commands my attention and insists it is pirate-like.

totentanzdandy is good inspo for boystyle that flatters the male form, imo.

found a Japanese crossdresser (possibly transman?) whose outfits range from classy to cartoony. her knowledge of classy menswear informs her ouji in a good way and reminds me how helpful it is to learn to dress well in normal clothes. also great thinspo, ouji really looks best on slim people.

pic very related.

Half of the outfits aren't even boystyle though. Just a little oldfashioned menswear. Which I agree is very flattering but that's because it's "proper clothing".

half of which outfits? both persons mentioned/posted do a range of fashion, from super-frilly ouji to nice contemporary menswear. my theory is that those who learn how to look great in regular menswear carry those skills over to boystyle.

i also think, especially for adult men who are too big for brand, mixing ouji with modern nice suit elements could be more flattering than full-on burando. i think folks like totentanz/Japanese-person-whose-name-I-already-forgot can be good inspo in that regard.

especially when just starting out on a tight budget.

looks like buttcape is disappearing from the internet or something. google ouji 101 and use neogrotesk's post and the dandy handbook for now. i've also had success in the past going to my favourite ouji (bakasoseji RIP) tumblr page and checking the FAQ, which has included where they buy stuff and preferred brands.

The collar's the nice part of this, along with the print, imo. It's the weird ruffles which just don't work together with the collar design. I have a couple of coats by them with this style collar, and they're great. They've been doing them for years.
