Girls Channel is a female orientated anonymous forum, where girls can discuss various topics. J-fashion pops up a lot, so I thought it'd be fun to translate a few of these /cgl/ related topics.

OP, it's good to remember that actual lolitas usually stay more into anonymous textboards like 2ch. Or they have their own fc2 blogs (their "equivalent" of tumblr, albeit more web 1.0 ish) Translating threads from there would be much more accurate. Ok first of all i love this thread and i love our translator anon-san

From a thread called "Mother: My Daughter's teacher wore gothic lolita. I can't forgive this!"

OP begins by asking "I have a question for parents with children. If you saw your child's teacher wearing something unexpected how would you feel?

The person who said this did mention that she didn't actually wear lolita.
It does sound like the community is not very tight-knit though except for brand events.

>>8709020
I was chatting to an international lolita living in Japan about Western comms and how the Japanese lolitas don't really have communities. They don't tend to hang out in large groups but stick to small friend groups, as opposed to Western comms where we kind of centralize everything, and having small groups comes off as stand-offish. Seeing as the comm system came out of a need to even find other lolitas and try and hang out with them, I can see why they wouldn't need that.

there isn't the same need to have a central community in Japan. So it makes sense that a central online community wouldn't be a thing either, really.

I'd heard from a friend living over there that most lolitas even roll their eyes at KERA and the GLB, which makes me wonder who buys them, since they're clearly still being made.
>>
>>8709831
>most lolitas even roll their eyes at KERA and the GLB
It makes sense. I've heard it too. Like there was a comment on this blog that Kera actually manages to get ahead of the trend sometimes because its stylists take more risks since they know their readers don't understand fashion at all.

Extremely underrated article that I have never seen it posted here before... I think it explains very well a lot about the difference between native and western interpretations of jfashions in itself, especially the last posts. Especially here on cgl we love to insist everything is not a costume out of our cultural context of western style subcultures, but for Japan they just take it as granted that it is, even if it's still their own personal style as a last ditch expression of creativity/character before adulthood.

Thanks for linking!
>>
>>8710751
Thanks! I think I got it in the otome thread. Always thought it was weird that the western community pushed the no costume concept so hard when everything else coming out of Japan was indicating otherwise. Maybe because of the association with cosplay?
>>
>>8710802
Well maybe partially, but like I said I think it's mostly a matter of different cultural context. For the west, where we have societal standards such that that we aren't as heavily expected to discard personality and 'uniqueness' as we enter adulthood, we have subcultures like goths, punks, etc where there are still tons of members who are adults, can spend their adult money on these fashions in their freetime, have their own adult hobbies without being judged as harshly as you would in Japan. So for us it's not taken for granted that we would present our fashion as a costume or uniform of a teen fad, because in the west fashion isn't seen that way. And for that reason it's more insulting to western sensibility to suggest that what you're wearing is a uniform carefully crafted to a specific purpose, rather than a natural and personal expression of your taste (like the writer's example of effortless vs effortful coordination).

Thinking even more about the article, think about how often you hear the word 'effortless' tossed about in western fashion magazines. The idea of not trying, having naturally good taste really is ingrained to western fashion sensibility. Maybe that's why we in the west judge people's coording skills more harshly (vs most of the criticism focused on girls' looks/weight that we've seen in these threads from Japan). Especially with regards to things like complaining about overdone trends (can easily be seen as trying too hard).
>>
>>8710802
Normalfags in the west also associate the outfits with events like conventions or product promotions. Also, theater play advertisement, or a filming for TV.

The same logic of "goths will dress up in goth" won't set off with lolita unless the viewer is familiar with it as a fashion in the first place.
>>
>>8710824
Good point on the word "effortless" getting tossed around in western fashion articles. You want to do fashion right, but you don't want to look like you worked hard to achieve it.

Reminds me of this analysis of what the meaning of "being cool" is in western fashion:

http://www.sloaneconde.com/home/2015/4/12/cool-girls-a-conversation-with-celine-of-double-plus-lovely
>>
>>8710838
There was a comment in the first article that really hit on this for me:
>As I see it, “effortless cool” is more of a Gen X value, while “passionate sincerity” is more of a Gen Y value.
With regards to the growing trend of hipsters and young fashion trends in the west.
I think the common western value of effortlessness is widespread and longheld because it's so old (began with babyboomers who became massively powerful spenders, along with how the designers of that day became the standard for what RTW fashion is today post-war), but it is beginning to fade a bit as the concept of dressing 'interestingly' becomes more popular. Just look at how interest in couture fashion has grown over the past decade, with designer collabs from fast fashion brands and indicators such as Gap's failed 'dress normal' campaign.

>>8710827
I think this is a good point too. For many westerners (I don't want to say a majority, but certainly more than with jfash), the masses have at least a passing familiarity with goth and punk as a concept and recognize it as a lifestyle. For lolita, there is no such common recognition (unless say, you were to be confused with a rockabilly lifestyler) and therefore they will associate it with the next most logical reason that someone is dressed out of the norm, a costume.

I just snapped this pic out of the back of a random j-fashion magazine I have. They have weighloss ads like this in the back all the time. Let's take a look at what Japanese considers fat:

left to right:
>48.8 kg to 38.1 kg (107 lbs to 84 lbs)
>61.9 kg to 46.5 kg (136 lbs to 102 lbs)
>59.3 kg to 39.6 kg (130 lbs to 87 lbs)

So yes, they mean that OP is fat.

As in:

And, now that I've had the time to sit and read through this link, I'm thinking about the aims most would associate with lolita in terms of how you want to present yourself stylistically. Then what does it mean to want to look 'cute'? To look 'elegant'? Where the discussion is going in my mind at least initially is towards the very divisive assertions made often in the lolita community that lolita is a fashion rooted in modesty and feminist rejection of sexualization) might be a little too off-topic and easily derailing for this thread, but I think they're hitting on something here. Maybe the problems with defining cool discussed in the article helps to articulate exactly why that issue is so divisive, in fact- we don't want to admit how we're defining ourselves, necessarily.

The photo they were referring to also fits that pattern.

In all seriousness, one because one can actually die from tapeworm. Two, they will not make you thin in the desirable shape.

A host afflicted with tapeworm will be bone-skinny in the limbs and face, but bloated in the gut.

The reason for this is the tapeworm will be absorbing all the nutrients before they get distributed to the full body of the host.

The host will eat and eat, being in perpetual starvation. Despite their digestive orgasms getting packed and stretched out with food matter, the host will continue feeling hungry because they actually are. The parasite, as well as any eggs it lays, will be absorbing nearly everything of nutritional value.

If you have a tapeworm, do not try to pull it out. This can cause it to snap and release eggs.

Instead, go to a doctor, who will give you just the right amount of poison to kill the tapeworm, but not you. You will be in for a rough ride.

After the parasite and its children are dead, who knows how your digestive system will be afterwards. Given how much it likely stretched out, you might even have a larger appetite than before you had the tapeworm.

But at least you won't be lowered into the grave looking like a cross between a ghoul and Humpty-Dumpty.

I'm a fairly plain white girl, honestly nothing special at all and rather average. I don't even have a nice shape face, it's on the long side if anything. My skin is pale and I have brown hair and blue eyes. When I've visited Japan I've had people fawn and fuss over me especially shop assistants. At first I thought it was just politeness but honestly, it was out of hand sometimes to the point where I started to feel really embarrassed.

One time I was so embarrassed I started to talk really quietly and look down at the floor, and then it was all 'oooh your voice is so small and cuute'! Japanese customers in the store then started giving me stink eye and I actually heard one of them say the equivalent of 'who does this bitch think she is?!'.

I've had the scenario above happen a number of times, where I'm doted on for no reason and then other people around me give me bitch face, talk behind my back saying things like 'she's nothing special'. I somehow manage to have complete strangers hate me and it's made me really paranoid, it's not like I'm swanning around thinking I’m all that - I'm just out and about trying to shop and mind my own business.

I can be quite an anxious person anyway and the whole thing has made me wary of ever going shopping in Japan again or going to get my hair done there or something similar.

I know this sounds all very 'white tears' and I know in the scheme of things it's nothing and I'm very lucky to have the funds to go travelling. From a selfish perspective though, feeling like I can never go to Japan again to shop, look at cute things and have fun kinda sucks. It was always one of the things I looked forward to the most in the world.

can't a certain type of tapeworm that usually affects pigs like make you develop massive cysts in your brain that can explode and kill you and shit?
