The cycle continues unabiding, Our goddess continues to reign over the infinite wired, the reality layered above our own. Love her, and we too might ascend.

Off to a good start! There's a tropical storm today so I might not be able to bump the thread.

I hope you stay safe, anon!
Thanks for making a new thread.
I just wanna stay home today ;-;

Sometimes I have bouts of fear and depression. When it's really bad I look at a picture of Lain on my phone. Her smile is surprisingly comforting.
>>2678726
>Layer 22: SECURE SHELL PROTOCOL
Heh. I get it.
>>2679015
Anxiety and depression is the way to go, man.
Always afraid that the worst could happen.
Always ready to accept it when it does.
There's an image I forgot to save that I think was in the last thread. It was of Lain smiling with wide eyes when she was covered in wires like in this one. I think it may of had a transparent background.
>>2679309
This?
>>2677839
Does anyone have interpretations on Lains bear symbolism?
I stumbled upon a Lain subreddit (Yeah yeah, I know) that is surprisingly more active than you'd expect for an 18 year old anime. It has daily picture posts too, even.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Lain/

From "Robot Ghosts and Wired Dreams":
>Lain's bear suit, which she dons throughout the series, attests to her own desire to escape reality, in this case by wearing a costume suggestive of a stuffed animal, an omnipresent signifier of cute shōjo culture in contemporary Japan.
TL Note: shōjo means girl
I have a sneaking suspicious that the author just pulled that out of his ass though, as the bear suit was not part of the original design. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_Experiments_Lain#Character_design)
>>2680660
/r/Lain is awesome. The guy who runs it has some dedication posting daily pictures for over a year.
>>2680660
I don't think the author is too far off, it definitely represents escapism to a degree. It's seems to be another way of telling what Lain we're seeing. Most of the time we see Lain wearing it she is around her family, or confused. We don't see confident wired Lain or the knight's Lain ever wearing it. Think about Layer 01, when Lain asks her father for a new Navi she is shy and in the bear suit. Later in the series when she gives her "The border between the two isn't so clear" speech, again to her father, she is not wearing the bear suit.
Then we she is fully realized as a Goddess, and to another extent an individual, she is told she no longer needs it.
Lain is fully of nice visual and audial clues like that.
>>2680708
Sounds like we'd get along.
>>2680073
Wow I hadn't even posted the "Similar Image" I must of been really tired. But anyhow no that wasn't the image but thanks for linking to that thread, I was able to find it. It's this one.
>>2680738
>>2680660
From what I read they were kind of forced to include the bear stuff by one of the artists to get them to work on it. They then used it to portray "Childish Lain" one of her three personas. She wears it gradually less as "Advanced Lain" takes over and at the end when she's talking to her father's spirit in the wired he says something along the lines of "You wont need that anymore" signifying that Lain's childish side was gone along with her corporeal form and the vices that come with it. So I guess in that way she was free of fear as well as innocence in a way which is what the suit represented.
>>2680738
This is the most accurate imo
The bear suit is her comfort during times of insecurity. Like a child and his favourite blanket or stuffed doll
>>2681174
So,
Wired Lain = God
Bear (human) Lain = Jesus (physical manifestation)
The Wired = Holy Spirit (non-corporeal manifestation)
?
>>2681326
Would that make evil Lain Satan? I guess it makes enough sense.
>>2681585
Evil Lain is not a very good Satan (by 'good Satan' I mean 'accurate portrayal' of course), I don't recall her tempting Lain even once.
>>2681665
True, I just don't know where she'd fit into Anon's theory otherwise.
>>2681585
>>2681665
I don't really see any kind of concrete comparison between Lain and christianity.
>>2681723
The Jesus analogy is a stretch for sure, but it can almost work.
Wired Lain (God) has always existed on the wired (everywhere), but was given physical form as Iwakura Lain (Jesus) to save humanity at the cost of her existence (his life).
"Lain Iwakura formatted herself for your sins" is a quote I hear every so often that seems to fit this comparison.
>>2681766
OK yeah that makes sence in a cursory(?) way.
I really didn't mean the question to come out so bluntly.
>>2681326
>>2681585
If you're trying to compare it to Christianity Eiri makes the most sense for a Satan character as he is aware of her existence (working at Tachibana) but tries to rebel or undermine her.
He's not the popularized Satan character you'd think of though, closer to the actual text as an adversary, he speaks out against Lain and challenges the status quo.
>>2681786
I'm mainly just trying to figure out where evil Lain could possibly fit in. I think that's what really breaks the parallel.
>>2681895
Yeah it breaks down fairly quick if you think about it enough.
Evil Lain, The knights, Tachibana labs and the men in black, lots of pivotal plot points don't really match up to anything.
>>2681983
this Lain represents temptations, though not lucifer literally. Original sin, if you will.
It's gonna be one of those days again....
>>2682683
Thanks for bumping the thread, normally I sneak away during work for a minute and do it but I didn't get a chance today.
I wanna know
Have you ever seen the Lain
Coming down a sunny day
I was upset and my friends helped me get over it. Now I feel happy.
I switched all my servers to use public key authentication only, still no Lain gf though.
Turning in early tonight.
Being awake isn't very appealing.
I really like this pic
Sorry I've been kind of slacking off in my contribution.
I've been in a pretty depressive and anxiety-ridden state for the past few days and am now just coming out of it.

You don't seem to understand?
A shame, you seemed an honest man.
I have a theory I've been thinking about. I really like looking for different color symbolism types in media. I find one of the most permeating types in japanese media is the use of red and blue to represent duality and something not appearing as it is. Although I don't see it mentioned often I noticed this a lot when watching Lain but couldn't exactly pin point what exactly it meant. The most obvious one was the mottled shadows in the material world occasionally changing between blue and red as lain did different things. Another was the use of red on all of the non modified navi systems and blue as the major color in all the software.
I could be wrong as I haven't rewatched this show with this specific theory in mind but my guess is that the red represents the material world as blue represents the wired crossing over. As the series progresses these colors seem less prominent possibly showing the two crossing over. This also makes sense considering the red laser motivs of the men in black while the knights use a blue logo.
Arisu is always seen wearing red which would also makes sense considering she's the only thing rooting Lain in the real world. Eiri is always shown wearing blue with the exception of the paint on his eyes which could represent his omnipresence in the material world while still only residing in the wired.
I may just be projecting nonsense here but does this seem noticeable to anyone else?
>>2685214
Interesting theroy anon, reminds me of the office worker scene a lot.
When it is Iwakura Lain the lighting is orange/reddish.
>>2685357
Then when he starts asking about Wired Lain, and draws her out the lighting shifts to a blue.
>>2685360
Oh wow, I hadn't even noticed that, very nice observation. After thinking about it more I also recalled how the logo screen for "Phantoma" was blatantly half red and half blue possibly relating to how it crossed the lines between reality and the wired and caused people to kill themselves in order to cross over.
Lain-chan sits upon her throne of AR mags!

I miss 1998.

Sitting inside checking the radar and playing games on your ancient PowerBook as a tropical storm rages arround you.
Those were the days.
Lain a god. A GOD!
Oh gosh
It's been pretty active lately thought I could relax a bit.
Last time I let my job get in the way of bumping this thread.
I've got the thread open most of the time I'm at the computer but I'm so preoccupied with shit I forget. Sorry.
>>2687633

I don't feel like posting a picture today.
Thank you for the thread anons, just got into the show and I'm really enjoying it.
>>2689148
Glad to here you like it anon.
...Does anyone wish Lain was unironically real?
>>2689275
Just finished the series and I loved it. I wish I had seen it earlier
>>2689537
What would being ironically real entail?
>>2689560
Glad you enjoyed it!
Welcome to the wired anon.
>>2689735
...Not being real, essentially. I just really wish Lain was real.
>>2690187
I like to think that she is, and that SEL was divinely inspired without the production team's knowledge a la Solomon's Song.
Ne? ...ne?
>>2691505
I want to protect that goddess.
>>2678728
arisu!
>>2678750
Lain playing normie is a really strange part in the show.
inb4 r9k reee I'm not from there.
>>2685214
kind of like the color code in "Matrix" (green for the matrix, blue for the real world)? Although they are way more obvious.
Normies reeee.
>>2691944
Not exactly. Green overtones were used in the real world of the matrix as well.
They used red and blue symbolism (sparingly) in a similar way where red pill was the opening of the real world oppressed by machines(which had red eyes and pods) and the blue pill was staying in the simulation. Red and blue coloration is extremely common in the japanese works that inspired The Matrix and is present in some ways within the movie, but unlike the things that inspired it, the symbolism feels very half baked and fleeting.
Lain seemed to stick with it even within the most subtle details now that i rewatch it. Like how Taro's navi goggles had red frames but blue lenses and how the user interface of the portable navi used by Nezumi uniquely has both red and blue within it's OS showing his desire to merge the two realities.
>>2691157
Arisu... Arisu, where are you...?!
>>2686521
I've lived in houston my entire cognizant life, and I still end up leaving a doppler radar open to see what's coming for me.
I can still feel the past here. It's here, it's around me. Affecting me.
I apologize for my lack of presence for most of this thread. It's been a busy time IRL, and I haven't been able to keep up with my devotion. I'm due for a trip for florida, to make sure the barriers between our realm and the wired are, slowly but surely, crumbling.
Blessed be, blessed be.
>>2692943
Have fun in Florida. It's 86 degrees at 11:00PM right now.

What the fug :DDDDDD
(I don't have any spurdo Lains so this will have to suffice)
It's a shame this thread is ending.
We've been having some interesting discussions lately.
Gonna just finish it off now.
New thread will be up when this one isn't on the first page anymore.
