I love her face on vol 9's cover so much.
I just finished watching melancholy and disappearance for the first time. I'd like to see more and I know about the Nagato spin off, but it has really shit reviews on MAL. My question is: Is the show really bad, or are people just upset that there is a change? I'm not asking if the show is cute, because obviously it's cute. I need to know if it's genuinely good. I loved all of the characters in haruhi and all of their personalities and interactions. I'm well aware there's probably no SOS club and that's fine, but I don't want a shoddily produced spinoff. I felt like the character's were genuinely interesting and I don't just want a show that doesn't properly represent that.
I know this isn't the best place to ask this question because /c/ isn't about discussion really but you guys are pretty much the only board I can trust not to spoil something for me because everyone here is pretty fucking cool. Thanks. I'd post some Yuki art just for your trouble but I started and finished the show in the past 3 days and I don't have anything yet.

Well, the art style is like.. very different, and I for one don't like it. Especially when it comes to Yuki - she doesn't like Yuki for me anymore.

I personally like KyoAni Yuki much more, closely followed by her depiction in manga.
If you can get over it, then okay, but second warning: the characters are too much out of context - they're completely rebuilt, Kyon doesn't use sarcasm, Yuki seems to be more shy while being more expressive and such. ALL the characters do not feel like the original ones.
Personally, I don't recommend the anime, manga is good enough for me to get through it.

Well, you have to remember most of it was aimed at Haruhi. And in his head. So naturally, being more focused on Yuki, we don't see any of it until Haruhi shows up, and then we only see what he lets out.

Nice timing. I actually started the spin-off show after I finished the movie. It is quite different than the original as the others mentioned but there's a lot of callbacks to the movie, which is kind of nice. If you can get over how different Yuki is, I think you'll be fine. I'm not very far in but with what little I've seen, I've enjoyed it. It's fun and fucking cute out the ass. However, I'm surprised at how low the rating on MAL is (not that it matters)

Again, the difference is who is being followed. Disappearance, we're following Main!Kyon in the Alt world. Vanishing, it's a simple slice-of-life/romcom following Alt!Yuki.

You sound like a delightfully jaded person. Naturally everyone is trying to make money. It's called capitalism. The basis of our entire societal system in much of the world (including Japan).
This does not preclude doing things because you want to tell a story or because you want to create something for people to enjoy. The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki was created as a spin-off of the Disappearance of Haruhi because it's a part of that universe quite a lot of fans wanted to see explored further and obviously the author felt that it was worth their time and effort to do s well as it's quite well written and not just a cheap half-ass cash-in.
