I make nearly 2x the average household. I pay only 25% income tax (federal and state inclusive) and easily have enough money to cover all of my expenses (including saving for retirement) and then some.
How is it even remotely possible that you can earn enough to pay the top marginal rate, yet still not be able to survive comfortably?

1) Not many that earn in the top bracket are worried about living uncomfortably. They just want to have as much money as possible.
2) Americans have health care costs and education costs that far exceed wherever you are from.
3) Americans do in fact pay a lot of income tax. Our federal tax rate--which pays for defense, healthcare, social security--is ~35% for top earners and our state tax rate is around 10-15%. So top earning Americans do in fact pay as much taxes as anywhere else.

I failed out of grad school last summer, started doing unskilled grunt work to pay off my student loans, and it's just now occurring to me that my resume has no professional, career-relevant experience on it outside of being a grad student for a year and a half and a mid-level summer internship the summer after my junior year of undergrad

With these low sums the best thing you can do to start with is to use it to minimise your outgoings.
You see, many people have no savings and have to do everything on credit.
Can you prepay your cellphone 12 months in advance and save some outlay? Buy the giant box of laundry powder. Bulk buy on all sorts of non perishable items. Buy clothes out if season in the sale for next year.
Sounds like not much reward, but the funds you have aren't really big enough...

I just quit my job as a sec. guard. It is a piss easy job and all you need is to get your guards licensed, uniformed, and have them watch a few training vids.My company wanted me to foot the bill for all of this, I just ignored it and worked there for 2 months still they started pressing me about it. The licensing stuff was going to cost me near 2 hundo and I got paid 8.50, so I decided to quit. Didn't like the job anyway.

I find negotiating with my bosses has been essentially pointless. They generally give me some "market rate" line of bullshit or how corporate has capped funds blah blah blah. But put in your notice and usually the tune changes. Of course, at that point, its too late.
