At which point did the US economy decide it's OK to allow the private sector to control the prices of life-saving medication, and at the same time prohibit the import of the same medication from abroad?

Gains on selling the investments will be subject to Australian capital gains tax, exactly the same as selling domestic shares. The exception would be if you were a professional share trader, in which case you would treat the shares as trading stock, but I don't think you would be asking this question if you were a professional share trader.
Dividends may be subject to withholding tax in the US. You have to declare the full amount of the dividend (ie including the tax that was taken out) as assessable income...

Just buy some index funds in a first world country. Your money will follow the market so the risks and rewards aren't that big. The market tends to grow a little bit more than inflation every year. Unlike most bank accounts.

How much would you pay for a course that would teach you all about investing for beginners? Assuming you know nothing about investing and it's an 8 week course meeting once a week similar to the learning your city offers as programs at community centers. I'll be teaching financial statement analysis, overall knowledge of investing, macroeconomic effects on investments, some excel, and a bunch of other topics.
MY city offers an intro to excel course for $165 for 6 weeks as an idea of comparison. I'm a finance graduate and a CFA level 2 candidate.
