Hi /biz/, I'm a first time poster here. I'm looking for advice, hope someone will be willing to help me since I've no idea where to start
I'm looking to change direction in life
I'm in the middle of a two-year master's programme at Oxford in a useless humanities subject, and I hate it
My original plan was to go into academia. But I'm no longer interested in my subject since I don't believe any of it, and I'd never make much money
I don't want to sacrifice my life to a comfortable career making a mediocre amount of money, if I could try and do something great
Ideally, I would either get into some kind of high-paying career in the City/Canary Wharf, or acquire some highly sought-after knowledge (in computer science or something? I don't know) that would put me in demand and give me power, so another degree would not necessarily be out of the question, if it's truly useful
At the moment, I know little about finance/economics. I have good mathematical skills though, my undergrad degree was joint with maths
Am I delusional in thinking that the fact I'm at Oxford helps despite not doing a useful degree?
What advice would you give to me? I don't know how to begin exploring my options

Amerifag here. I admit I have no idea how it works at Oxford, but have you considered emailing the math, stats, finance, or comp sci departments? I did my masters in Mathematics in Canada while on a grant to do economic policy research, so I don't think it's impossible to multitask and work towards a second/different degree. It can't hurt to ask, and I would start there.
That said, graduate level mathematics can be brutal. You say you did well as an undergrad, but are you emotionally prepared...

My thesis was in reputation effects in Bayesian games (game theory - John Nash is my hero), but I also did coursework in statistical modeling, stochastic systems, and probability. I used what I learned to develop a program to more accurately evaluate corporate goodwill.
Got offers from TD Bank, Citi, Deutsche, Booz Allen, and a few smaller firms, all at double my B.Sci. salary. I work in business intelligence and forecasting because fuck being a quant and working 100 hour weeks.

OpenBazaar is still early in development. Updating the UI, integrating IPFS, building services around its protocol, and the addition of OneName should help make it better.
I would say start getting used to it and see if you can find opportunity with it. Once enough users are in its network I plan on using it to sell professional services for my job through it.

I'm an ebayer and started looking to expand my business with more products and inventory. I met someone online yesterday who happened to be looking for a quality ebayer to sell off his "overstock and extra" items.
i assumed he was a nigerian scammer but he wound up suggesting for a local meetup tomorrow and will give me a small batch of items to work with for test run
theres lots of weird:
-we just met a day ago, yet hes comfortable handing me (a stranger) a fairly large sum of value
-never asked for my ebay profile to check if im really what i claim
-he agreed to a 50/50 split of the -full selling value- of the item. He's not factoring in any cost of item initially to get it.
-the stuff he has is fairly good stuff (popular brands and items), or at least what he showed me so far is.
-said I can decide the prices
I asked for inventory examples to get an idea of what hes working with, he responded with pictures
Everything he showed me was in retail packaging. said some is used and/or not have packaging, but most do
fitbit, amazon fire, some off brand/small brand tablets, lg bluetooth headphones, etc. Some of it -might- be bootleg (i know lg headphones are bootlegged often, same for fitbit) but things like amazon fire and low brand tablets I don't think get bootlegged?
did a quick n dirty price check, if he gives me what he showed in the pictures the end result is around 400 bucks in my pocket.
questions:
-why does he trust me, a stranger, with that high of value
-how is he getting all this? I've looked for years. never any decent profit

Your cover letter should be highlighting your experience. Instead of writing an essay make bullets. Make an introductory paragraph of who you are and why you would like this opportunity. Then make bullets of highlighted experiences and projects you managed. People reading these don't want to read an essay. They want to see the person you are and your qualifications as quick as possible.
If you buy a put or a call which is out-of-the-money and then an earnings release suddenly rockets it deep in-the-money, who the hell is buying the option when you sell it?
How is buying an ITM option on the maturity date a good idea? It'd be less expensive to just buy the underlying security at the current market rate, though you're not guaranteed to be able to buy the same amount as the option would guarantee.

Institutional traders on the wrong side of the trade covering their position. They could have been using options to protect a large stock position, the options did their job and now they're covering and repositioning using the new earnings information.

You just gave me a interesting idea, OP.
Provided you have some knowledge of a sector or industry and are waiting for financial or earnings report, wouldn't be profitable to bet on about 5 different companies (either long or short) using options? Provided you're not wrong more than half the times when you're making that bet, I assume the times you stand to lose are more than covered by the right choices, no?

Whats the minimum Investment to join?
What does /biz/ think of the career "Occupational Therapy Assistant" (OTA). It's a 2 year college program that is rather difficult like Nursing, but probably not as bad. And you will make something like 45-50k a year starting. I was thinking about doing it, but its very difficult to get into, and only 3 colleges in my state offer it. It's probably roughly 10k to finish the entire course, but making 50k a year, you can make that back quick. Anyone have any experience with this field at all? If its worth it, I might get an apartment a few hours away to attend...

10k is a pretty good deal for that. I was doing DPT for a while, but switched.
OTA has the same problem that PTA (physical therapists assistant) has. It's harder to get jobs due to the new medicare and ACA rules in hospitals and out patient clinics.
Most hospitals and clinics are just hiring OTs and PTs instead of the assistants because medicare won't pau for certain therapies done by the PTA and OTA.
This seems to affect major cities more than smaller ones.
Make sure the well isn't dry in your town
if you want a 2 year degree where you make good money in healthcare, go for ct technologist/ ultrasound tech/ mri tech. Or respiratory therapist if you want a lot of action.
