I was thinking of buying a large parcel of land probably 15 to 20 acres, running a road through and municipal services like water/sewer, and power, and making lots for people to buy for new home construction.

if the parcel of land is cheap, it is for a reason: utilities arent available/adequate at your parcel and it will cost a fucking forune + many years to get them.

Think more like maratime provinces, where most subdivisions are built by individual investors and municipalities are excited for new home development and try to help you in any way they can. Zoning is as simple as "Residential" and subdividing is as easy as hiring a surveyor and a lawyer.
The ideal location is middle class but not highly populated areas. Populations of 5 to 10k in communities. The kinda places that have 1 main street with a 1 mcdonalds and 1 tim hortons.

Just started a new job in finance about a month ago and my new boss has passed a massively overwhelming project on to me and I don't think I can deliver on it. It isn't related to my educational background so I'm completely lost. I'm going to be working on it all weekend. I have no human resources available and this project is for people pretty high up in the company. What the fuck do I do? What's a good way to start getting into shares and trading? I have around $3-4k of disposable income that I could play around with, and just started up a Comsec account.
Thing is I don't really know a whole lot about what shares are best and that sort of thing. Mate of mine who trades told me Gold is always good, but doesn't fluctuate a whole lot so making a lot of money off of it isn't going to happen quickly.
