Elon is an anomaly. A regular person cannot work up to his level. The only way to reach his level of influence is to be abnormally smart and driven.
The first step, though, would be to get a hold of lots and lots of money. Start a business, copy exactly what everyone else is doing and make boat loads of cash. Use the money to start a company that recycles radioactive waste and uses it to do quantum computing. Now you're the talk of the town.

Easiest way for right now? Get a job teaching English in China. They pay for your plane tickets there and back. Part time 12k (6k in China goes as far as 30k in America, 5-1 on most things). You can easily double that by tutoring pushing you up close to full time, and your visa to China switches over to one that lets you come and go as you please, you just have to renew it periodically.
It isn't that hard mate. They'll even help you learn Chinese while you're there.

Here's the plan:
1. Take a residential mortgage for 2-room apartment (or take a loan in a bank and buy an apartment)
2. Rent it out to some people
3. Their rent will cover the monthly fee you need to pay to your bank
4. After a while, the apartment is 100% yours

Physics isn't particularly useful by itself I would say, maths or chemical engineering would probably be a better option if you want to make a lot of money.
If you do a gap year make sure you're going to definitely have a job and not just doss for a year, depending on where you live, getting a job straight after your a levels may not be easy.
