Full disclaimer, I'm as ignorant as it gets regarding finance and economics, and am in engineering.
The other day, I picked up "A Random walk down wall street" from my uni's library having heard good things about it, and it made a lot of sense for the most part, it was a very informative read. That being said I feel like something flew right over my head.
It says in the book that a portfolio composed of ETFs provide solid annual returns, and outperform most of other actively managed portfolios.
I looked at the S&P500, DJIA and Vanugard's total stock market ETF 10-y annualized returns, and to my big surprise it floats around 7%.
Living in Europe, inflation is around 0%, and my bank account gives me 0.75% annual interest rate.
Now, I asked myself, why can't my bank give me a higher interest rate if a diversified ETF-only portfolio is that safe and profitable ? Can't they just invest my money and give me a better deal? Something seems off, a safe 7% annual return seems too good to be true compared to my current interest rate. Surely some bank could rake all the clients in with an account giving a variable interest rate following the total stock market performance.
Am I misunderstanding something /biz/?

Ps: Does anyone (eurobros?) know about a trading platform with low commission fees I should use ?

I have a lottery broker. That means that I have a "buy random amount of shares of random company at random price"

There's still risk associated with it. There's actually laws (at least in the US) about using client money to invest. Dodd-Frank, I think it is.

Mall kiosks is a really rough frontier. It seems like a really plausible answer to get your name out there while still generating sales.

I have worked my entire adult life at Israeli kiosks at the mall.

You know the ones, the guys that jump out at you.

I have sold

A friend of mine did this for awhile. It's not a store, it's a testing lab. Once a product becomes popular, it gets yanked out of the kiosks and replaced by new, untested products.

Peddle your wares elsewhere, merchant.

Anybody got that pic of the qt Jew kiosk girl?

Guys, i'm thinking getting $5,000 worth of Frontline LTD (NYSE:FRO), Long Term (5-10 Years) wise, it seems like a good decision but what do you guys think? Short Term Yield FTW?
And don't give me that GLXFX crap, Already in it.

Honest question; What makes business degrees worth anything?

An incredibly popular major over here is "International Business" at CBS.
What what I've understood, people see it was some sort of fast-line to a shitton of cash.
But, from what I see, you are much more likely to work for a company that 'optimizes' other companies. Not bad work, but it doesn't seem like the best way to earning a lot of money.

Heres what you learn on their Bachelor

>Would it not be better to go for a STEM field, then learn economics, marketing, business etc. on your own, and then use your skills to develop some of value to base your business around?

Absolutely. I'm not in either field (I'm in law) but if I were more focused on entrepreneurship I'm certain that it would be better to go into comp sci or engineering and hone my creative skills while learning business on the side.

The people I know who studied STEM are doing...

These are my exact thoughts.
The only other scenario is that if you were to inherit a company from your parents, in which case it could be useful to 'piggyback' and manage it properly.

I mean, I'm in a higher social class, so I've met a lot of children of rich people. All of them have some sort of STEM background. Even if it's something not very climactic that made them wealthy (One guy made a sort of 'database' software, that hit it big).

I'm mostly asking since...

They're all bitch work. I personally left a 3 year network engineer career because I'd forever be the equivalent of a tradesman working for other people my whole life. I'm now studying to be a web/iOS dev where I'll pick up work when I want and develop my own apps. Honestly I'd be more ok with going into sales than going back to IT

I have thought about this too. But then I remember I barely use phones let alone apps or games so I will be serving an audience I'm alien to.

Only an asset if you
1) Can keep it rented without people that don't destroy it
2) You can afford to carry it if #1 gets bumpy during a recession

>becoming a Youtube partner?

Hey there /biz

So I started my own business about 2 years ago and we've been doing extremely well--which is actually the problem. We're growing at a very fast pace and managing everything has been more than difficult.

To save costs and operate efficiently, I was wondering if any of you knew a software for small business that incorporates basic business management into one platform. A software that includes: HR, Accounting, Financial Planning, Time Management...etc.

Is there anything like this out there?

Also pic unrelated

31 KB,
It has come the time to name a little company I'm starting that sells woman shoes. It's not a factory, I don't make the shoes (for now).

The strongest name I had in mind was "Kiwi" but later found out there is a shoe polish brand with the same name that is well known globally. I could use the name anyways but I don't want people to think I'm trying to take advantage of their reputation or something like that.

Any suggestions for a name?

I'm new to Roth IRA's. I've got about $1k in one, but haven't used any of the money. It's just sitting there. If I'm hesitant to make any investments right now (still learning the ropes), is it worth my time to put money into one? Or am I better off keeping it in savings at 1%.

Also, does funding for the Roth IRA have to come from my employer? Or can I just transfer money from a checking account.

IRA means individual retirement account and you can deposit a max of 5.5k/year from your checking account. Put it in a mutual fund if you're confused when you have about 3k. Do a riskier one if you're under 50.
>>
>>1179805
By all means start the account and start funding it ASAP, but I would personally warn you against investing in anything at the moment. We're due for another recession anytime within the next year or two.

Forget about keeping your money in savings as the 1% interest rate makes you actually lose money because inflation is > 1%. Stocks typically return about 8% per year when averaged out over 10 year spans. But there is risk.... You will get 25-30% in some years (2012-2013) as the stock market recovers...

If the US prints tons of money in secret, what affect would it have on inflation?
7 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>1179672
Printing doesn't mean shit, only when it's circulated does it cause inflation. The money could have come out of a time machine from fucking 1989, and it still wouldn't have an effect unless it was circulated.

Secondarily to this, money is not the same thing as cash/hard currency. Most money isn't even generated via the printing of currency, it's created via fractional reserve banking.

This stuff is macroeconomics 101.
>>
>>1179681
What this guy said, except for the part about fractional reserve banking because that meme doesn't actually describe how it fucking works. Banks create "money" from nothing all the time irrespective of their reserve position at the central bank (the actual constraint is capital requirements).

Inflation will result from excessive demand (too much spending) which can happen whether the government spends some more money into existence or not.
>>
>>1179672

>in secret

it will have absolutely no effect. Inflation is something that occurs based on peoples expectations of what the inflation rate will be.

hahaha your dad's fucking you over because he doesn't want to pay for your premiums, dude. *If he wanted to*, he could claim you as a dependent, since you're full-time enrolled in school. But, he doesn't want to pay for the family-plan health insurance that would cover you, so he's told you it's Obamacare's fault and left you out to dry.

Sorry bro, your dad's an asshole.
>>
>>1179447
He doesn't pay the premium it's covered by his job. He gets a base pay of 42/hour plus benefits (401k/healthcare/life insurance) which makes his total pay come out to about 60-70/hour.
