Cat-owners: how do you feel about your cat making human friends?

I have befriended many cats on my walks and their owners seem okay with it. I'd like to hear your thoughts.
>>
>>2100470
My cats are indoors, but I'm always pleased when they decide they like someone. One of my cats is very shy, so it's almost exciting when she decides to come out and sit on someone's lap. And it makes that person feel special. My other cat is very friendly, and I feel like she makes guests feel welcome when she greets them with nuzzles.

I tend to befriend cats on walks, too. Sometimes a specific cat joins me on my walks until I reach what I guess is the edge of her territory. I think if the owners had a problem with their cats interacting with other people, they probably wouldn't let them roam.
>>
>>2100473
My cat friends join me too. Does yours mew in protest as you step outside her territory?

Out of curiosity I've tried to see where they would lead me if I chose instead to follow them, but they don't really go anywhere. Once they're satisfied I'm not leaving immediately they'll go back to whatever they were doing before I tried to leave. I guess if it were up to them they'd collect their favourite humans. One in particular, though, tries to lead me to his front door. He likes to sleep in his neighbour's driveway where I usually find him. After greeting me he will then slink off towards his house, checking every couple of metres to see if I'm following him. Unfortunately for him I usually stop following him at the fence-line so every time we meet it now ends in him sitting in the middle of his yard, watching as I veer off his directed course and into the next street.

That's very true.

I've got some very young kittens, I think they were only a couple days old when I got them, and now I've had them for 2 1/2 weeks and they opened their eyes 1 1/2 weeks after I got them.

I got a good look at one of their eyes, and they're all googly and fucked. Is this normal? Will its eyes straighten out? Or did I get a retarded kitten? I'll take some pictures

A while back our black cat passed away, he literally used up his 9 lives and a few months ago my sister wanted another cat (even though we have 3 dogs already).

I'll get him his rabies vax during his check up next week, then get him groomed. Learned from my mistakes and will brush him way more... old man cats need help with this.

How do you tell if a cat is big or just fat? I have a cat that weighs 16 pounds but he is extremely big and it's hard to tell what is normal for his size and what isnt. He also has a vet app coming up but I was just wondering if anyone had any experience. We also got him fixed at a young age which I've heard makes them get bigger

It was really thin, picture is kinda shit, sorry.

I just got her two weeks ago, she's my first cat. I don't know what to do.
Also, I heard vomiting can be normal for cats?
Please help.

Also, she's going around just normal now, doesn't seem like anyone is wrong with her.

Have you noticed anything else really strange? Is she skinny? Is her coat rough and dry? Do her stools smell extra foul? Is she drinking a lot of water?

She could have an underlying medical condition. I would suggest you keep an eye out for anything else that may be strange. In the meantime try not to feed her too much in one setting, buy high quality food (like blue buffalo) w/o red dye (many cats have an allergy to this), and inspect the house for anything (super potent candles or wet paint) that may make her feel nauseous.

After you do all of this and she's still vomiting then I would take her to the vet. She may have a thyroid problem (easy fix), maybe she has some kind of parasite, or she may unfortunately have something like cancer. I wish you the best of luck and I hope she feels better soon.

What you're seeing is the third eyelid (which shuts horizontally, like a sliding door, from the inner corner to the outer) covering most of the eye. It should straighten out.

>>2101039
It can be, especially the coat is very thick, the cat doesn't groom anymore, and/or you don't brush them regularly. Dead fur can fall out but get tangled in other still-attached fur, giving it that "wadding" appearance when it all comes out.

>>2101045
It happens. At least you didn't try to use scissors. I've seen cats come into the clinic with holes sliced in their sides because their owner was trying to cut mats out and accidentally cut their fur.

Alternately, you may be able to ask the vets to do the shaving for you.

>>2101234
Oddly, it really is normal for cats, not like in us humans. Sometimes even perfectly healthy individuals may "fluke" vomit for no discernible reason. However, if your cat makes a habit of it - for example, vomiting several times a week, or 3+ times in one day - something's wrong. Especially if seen in conjunction with the symptoms >>2101304 mentioned (lethargy is also worth noting).

She's acting as normal otherwise, coat is as beautiful and soft as always.
She's already getting high quality wet food in the evening, but she hardly eats it(50g max.). She gets free fed with dry food throughout the day (25g which is a bit less than half the recommended amount for a day).
So she's not eating very much, a bit under what's recommended, but she's been like that ever since we got her.

Not lethargic at all, just lazy. Will meow for attention, but will ignore most attempts at playing with her. But I think that's normal for her as well.

>>2101439
Thanks anon, made me worry a bit less. She only vomited twice, and it was at least a week apart.

why do people say cats can't/don't modulate their bite force like dogs do? my cat is very expressive and uses a little, entirely painless nip frequently to tell me what she wants.

I think one of my parents' outside cats might have leukymia or something.

Symptoms:
- Rough coat/apparently hair loss in some areas near spine.
- Teeth may be yellowed, hard to tell completely for me.
- Loss of a lot of weight, especially near ribcage and hind hips. Kind of skeletal back there.
- Less energy, but he's 15 now, I don't know.

Originally we tried anti-parasitics thinking it may be worms.
I've recently finally been able to track down where the fucker does his business, and have confirmed he does not have worms.
After that I considered dental infection of some kind, but while his teeth aren't perfect, I see no signs of infection.

He's a 15 year old shorthaired feral, I've read that cats can have a pretty dramatic change when they reach a sort of "cat menopause" stage in their lives, but this has to be something more.
Anything I can do from home about this?
Chances are if treatment would require medication and constant visits, he'll be put down. I'm not in control of that decision.
>>
>>2102691
There is obviously something not right, so call your Vet. Better to have the cat put to sleep than suffer; 15yrs is a grand time, x
>>
>>2101234
So, she vomited again just now, in the middle of the night.
Again yellowish thin liquid.
She's cleaning herself now, doesn't seem like she feels ill or anything.

Should I worry? This is the third time total, and second time this week.
>>
>>2103546
That is a lot of times for a cat to vomit in a week. A cat occasionally vomiting is pretty standard, but twice in a week is a bit much.

I would take her to the vet when you can. I wouldn't say it is an emergency, but definitely have her checked out.

There's a female cat that I feed, and she's given birth to kittens before (3 boys, who I all trapped and neutered before letting them out again) she she gave birth again a week ago last Tuesday. She gave birth to them in the heated dog house I have on my porch, but because her sons come to my porch to eat as well she ended up moving them. I think I know where she moved them to though

I'm wondering what should I do about this? I've taken in pregnant strays before and found homes for the kittens and sometimes the mothers, and I ended up keeping the ones that I couldn't find homes for (the 6 cats I currently have were all strays) so I'm hoping to find homes for these kittens when they're old enough, but their mom is pretty feral. All the other cats have given birth inside my house. She's pretty friendly and will come up to me and rub against me and let me pet her and touch her stomach, but she isn't fit to live inside. After these kittens are old enough to be left by themselves I plan on getting her fixed

I'm not sure what to do about these kittens? Should I just leave them alone and get them fixed when they're old enough like her last litter and let them live out their lives as ferals, or should I try and socialize with them and then rehome them? I've thought about turning them over to my vet and lying and saying the mother was killed so they can bottle feed them until they're old enough and then give them back to me (they've done this before when one of the queens I took in had a respiratory infection and later I found homes for all of her kittens) but I'm not sure if I should since they currently have a perfectly capable mother to care for them
>>
>>2104514
That's tough man, my fridge really suctions (sucks?) itself shut, a cat wouldnt be able to op;en it. How old is your fridge?
>>
>>2104559
If it's a financial issue, do what woudnt be too expensive for you, but safest for the cats. Try to find a middle ground, but at least get the mother cat fixed asap.
>>
>>2104749
Like 10 years old? It has decent suction though. My cat just somehow devised some method to open it, maybe he pushes the rubber part in, so he doesn't need to actually pull the door apart. Only feasible explanation I can come up with. That cat also figured how to open a normal cupboard (inside which is the trash can). We put a wooden spoon forcing the door shut, he learned to move it sideways after a while, when the spoon started bending a bit.

I have another cat that, somehow, learned how to open my living room's cupboard doors. They have a round, really smooth knob that has to be rotated.
>>
>>2104751
Money isn't an issue, which is why I'm conflicted on what to do. I don't want to take them away from their mother, but if hand rearing them and then rehoming them is the best option, I'll do it. I'm worried that we might not be able to find homes for all of them, and I would have to keep them myself and I really don't want any more cats
>>
Hey, so i don't know how active the cat General is or if I should maybe just make my own thread, but I've got a question.

Earlier, i slipped a collar around my cats neck, and she hates it. I can't even take it off of her because she'll attack my hand. I managed to slip my fingers under the collar, so i know it's not too tight or anything. It's actually pretty loose. So how do i get her used to the collar? I can calm her down for a minute with treats but that's it. Do i just keep distracting her until she gets used to it?

So I adopted a year old cat from the shelter 4-5 weeks ago, pic related. He was very skittish at first but now seems to trust me to a high degree. I have one big problem though:

Anytime someone pets him, he always moves around to show you where he wants to be pet. I'm guessing this is normal- but another thing he'll do is arch his rear right towards you and curve his lower back and tail upwards, exposing his rear end. He also like to put his butt on things, and i've caught him sleeping with his butt on his chaser-mouse string toy's stick. This behavior has made some of my guests and myself uncomfortable at times. Why does he do this? Can I get this to stop? Is it possible for cats to be homosexual like swans?
>>
>>2105103
There might be a medical problem causing his anus to be itchy or painful and he's just trying to relieve it. Congested anal glands is a common problem, and although it's gross you can express them yourself; look up how to do it. You can ask your vet to do it instead. Cats are one of the many animals that display homosexual behavior, but I'm entirely sure trying to shove things up his butt isn't normal
>>
>>2105119
He doesn't shove things up his butt, just against it. I'll look into this anal gland thing some more when I wake up, thank you.
>>
>>2100623
>I've got some very young kittens, I think they were only a couple days old when I got them

>>
>>2100623
No, it's not normal. Take it to the vet
>>
>>2104441
thanks for the response, i checked and the local shelter only takes animals who desperately need homes, so i figure i may as well take care of them

another question though, the pregnant stray cat's husband has been drooling for the past few days, like, long beads of drool coming out of both corners of his mouth

could this be rabies? he's pretty feral, and is always shy and aggressive, no way i can catch him to take him to the vet

could he transfer whatever disease he has to other cats?

If I want to take my cat on walks or drives, how concerned should I be about him getting hot in the summer sun? His fur isn't short and isn't long. He's all black and I worry about him getting too hot in the sun's rays.

Obviously I'd carry a bowl and some water with us and take breaks under shade, but I wonder if 80-90F weather would be too much for him to take 5-10 mile walks with me. I'm only a first time cat owner, so take it easy.
>>
>>2106546

Cats cope extremely well with the heat, but they're generally not fans of prolonged, tiring activity (like several mile walks) or unfamiliar places. If you have a weird dog-like cat that's OK with it, cool, but definitely start with shorter walks. Cats tend to have a high surface area to mass ratio and need very little water so they're usually ok with heat, but it would be very unusual for a cat to just up and go for a ten mile walk in hot weather, so it may find the experience unpleasant if not harmful.

I adopted him(found him in grandma's place) took it to vet and he already had that. Told me it could be an abscess or something viral that could ended up making it hard to breath I got scared as fuck and told me to wait a week, so I did and he still has it, taking it to the vet tomorrow again.
He doesn't look sick, he's playful, loving, and eats normally.
Someone could help an anon plase

Not sure if you know, but is it bad to shave the cat's fur for the summer season? Should you douse the cat in water if you suspect it's getting hot or would that only make things worse?
>>
>>2106573
If it's a long haired cat and it gets really hot where you are, you could maybe shave just its belly, especially if the floor on your house is usually cool. That way they can feel fresh just by lying down on their bellies. At least this is what my vet suggested me a couple years ago.
>>
>>2106576
>>2106573
Oh, I didn't check the chain of posts before that one. I'd simply recommend not getting a long-haired cat, then. I also wouldn't recommend dousing your cat in water, as they tend to find that unpleasant unless they seek that themselves.

So, my cat has this usual habit of coming over to table every time we're at lunch, eating dinners or snacks.

He hears dishes and utensils, comes to the tables and demands food.

But, he doesn't come when we're just pretending to prepare something, or when we're grabbing something that won't suit him.

How can the cat know when I'm eating something that he will want too?

I almost never let my cats outside. Though my 3 year old male that I hand raised from 2 weeks old goes out on a leash sometimes. Yesterday I let him walk around the fenced in backyard while closely supervised. He finds a patch of dry clay and starts rolling on his back like a dog. Purrs really loudly and then while still rolling grabs my hand and rubs his face against it.

I've never seen him look so happy before.

My vet recommended my cat get a dental cleaning.

Any experiences with this?
>>
>>2107130
Expensive as fuck but cats and dogs need their teeth cleaned too. You should brush them regularly because tooth extractions and oral surgery in general for them is even more expensive. And yes it is very common for their teeth to go to total shit and require that if you feed them and shitty diet and don't brush their teeth. Tooth abcesses and infections can be deadly.

So when I get my own place I'm thinking of adopting an adult cat. I know they're typically more mellow, but I'm concerned for cats that have previous trauma and are just fucked in the head and me not being properly equipped to make sure the cat's as happy as possible
>>
>>2107105
Same reason people like massages. I'd be pretty happy if there was some random person who followed me around and constantly gave me massages

>>2107114
Spreads through feces, so probably not. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before it evolves to spread through saliva and cats can spread it much easier
Sooner or later cats will cause all of us to have severe schizophrenia until we are unable to survive as the dominant species and they'll take over. I try to be as nice to them as possible so when they do take over they'll allow me to live a comfortable life as a higher up man spawn slave
>>
>>2107194
Cats with psychological and behavioral problems can overcome them with enough tlc. You can ask the shelter about their background and personality and if there's a history of abuse and neglect and whatnot. They probably wouldn't let you have a cat that's fucked up in the head if you've never had cats before since you wouldn't know how to properly take care of it

>>

It's pretty rare to find a cat with serious behavioural issues. Most of the cats in shelters haven't been through some hideous trauma, they've had somewhat neglectful owners at worst, which isn't ideal but doesn't tend to fuck up cats as badly as it does dogs. If you meet a cat in a shelter situation and it seems friendly, it's not going to turn into a broken, traumatised shell when you bring it home.

Is it safe to use compressed air to discipline a cat? New kitten likes water and thinks the spray bottle is just a novel drink delivery system. On the one hand, he reacts very negatively when I spray in his direction and tends to avoid me for a bit after, so I don't want to hurt him.

I found two kittens about this age:
>>2100626
They were outside on concrete and there was a raccoon trying to get them. The mother cat was there but not defending them against the raccoon. Not sure why the raccoon was out during the day.

I think my neighbour put all of the cats outside. I've taken them in and got milk replacer. Should I take care of the raccoon (trap it and move it) and put the kittens back outside? Try to catch the mom and bring her inside? I don't want the kittens to get eaten.

How do I play with my cat?

What are some good cat toys?

She has a stick with string and a toy attached to it, she has toy mice and other stuff but she doesn't get as excited for those as she used to get. She also likes to play fetch with plastic bottlecaps but gets tired of doing that after a bit.

She's only about a year old.

Anesthesia is very safe these days. I've been working in the veterinary medicine field on and off for a decade now and have only known two animals that died under anesthesia, and one of those was elderly, overweight, and had a hugeassed tumor in the back of its mouth that nobody knew about until she'd kicked the bucket.

$175 is a great price for a dental. Do it once and you'll probably never have to worry about your cat's teeth again, and can rest easy knowing he's not in pain or going to develop further health complications from dental disease.
>>
>>2107720
>Doesn't compressed air have chemicals in it?
Yes, it does, which is why people huff it. As long as it isn't sprayed AT the cat it should be fine, though.

>>2107848
It's weird that the mother didn't do anything, that shit's pretty instinctual. You sure it was the mom?

If you have one near you, you could surrender them to a no-kill humane society or rescue. This time of year there are lots of young litters and pregnant females being fostered until they're ready for adoption.

>>2108146
Give her the ol' ping pong ball in the bathtub. I've also known a lot of cats that went fucking nanners for the toy called Cat Dancer, which is literally just little bits of cardboard attached to some wire. Pretty easy to replicate and make yourself. Plain old string is good too.

>>2108470
What kind of litter are you using? It may seem innocuous, but this can actually be indicative of significant health problems (such as anemia) or nutritional deficits.

Regardless, be sure to use non-clumping litter until you've figured out the source of her problem. The last thing you want is an intestinal blockage.

It's possible, anon. If not, I'd say even go around and check some shelters. Depending on where you live, it's possible someone could be trapping cats in your area and putting them in shelters.

If it's been that long I would probably begin to worry too and assume the worst. Then again, I start freaking out if my cat is gone over night. But over a week is just too much. I hope your cat is just off on an adventure and comes back soon, anon.
>>

I really want to get a cat when I finally get my own apartment, but I keep having this recurring nightmare and it's making me feel terrible. In the dream I have an apartment and a cat, but I am always at work so the cat is ignored nearly all the time. And when I'm finally home the cat looks like it's starving, cold and about to die, yet for whatever reason it still loves the fuck out of me. And now I'm afraid to get a cat because I don't want that happening.
>>
I need some advice /cat/.

Bought a new litter box for my two cats. It's a dome one, since I was hoping it would reduce the amount of litter that ends up getting dragged around my apartment. Everything was fine and dandy the first few days that my cats were using it, but now my older cat is having issues with it. She's the larger of the two (cat on the right in pic) and just can't seem to get how to work this new litter box. I just witnessed her stand inside the box, stick her ass out of the entrance in the dome part, and piss on the litter mat rather than inside the actual box. I'v also come home from work to find cat poop sitting on the mat over the last couple of days, presumedly from my older cat as well.

tl;dr: Do you guys know where I might be able to find a super large dome litter box for my cats? I'm assuming the issue is that she's just too big for it. I've used just regular litter boxes for the both of them in the past, but again, I run into the issue of having litter dragged all over my house, which I'd like to reduce as much as possible.

My 3-year-old male cat seems to experience some kind of tremors when he dozes and sleeps. It's not sleep twitching/jerks (which he also does), but a very slight quivering you can barely see, like you get in your arm if you flex your bicep as hard as you can. It's so slight that at first I thought it was from him purring. He cuddles with me a lot at night and I can feel it when his body is pressed up against me, mostly in his hind end but also up his back and front end to a lesser degree. If I wake him up, he'll stretch and yawn and it will stop.

Any idea what this is? He just recently checked out fine with a vet last week, but I was mostly focused on his sibling (who had health concerns) and it slipped my mind to mention it. He's never lost control of his bladder or jerked around (aside from normal sleep twitches cats and dogs get) or anything I'd expect in an epileptic cat.

I recently moved to a new apartment with my 2 inside cats. One of them has taken to walking around and screaming from 4 am to 6 am every morning.

He's not hungry or thirsty, he's not in pain, he doesn't want to be paid attention to. Has anyone experienced this before? Any suggestions for how to get him to stop? I can't just lock him out of my room, because my concern is bugging the upstairs neighbors (He's the loudest cat I've ever met)
>>
>>2109998
How old is he?
>>
>>2110023

3-5. He's been to a vet recently so we don't think it's a health issue. He's always been a talker and we used to live with 4 more cats he was constantly interacting with, so we think it might be stress/anxiety related. Any suggestions?
>>
>>2110039
Could be just stress, my cat suddenly got a lot louder when we got a 2nd cat..and again when we moved

I'd try 2 things: a) play with him right before you go to bed, and b) try keeping a radio on classical or talk radio at night.

My cat's butt leaks. Since I got him back in December this 4 year old brown tabby with more asiatic features hasn't had a SOLID shit like a normal animal. It's always lumpy and similar to diarrhea but not it. I've tried different dry foods with no success. Even did limited ingredient stuff too.

My vet wasn't much help either, "lol idk who cares"

Confirmed no parasites, confirmed no diseases.

He originally came from the shelter, was adopted, lost and eventually found by the shelter again and that's when I adopted him. I'm thinking maybe as a stray his diet was actual birds and animals.

>>2112159
You should probably visit a different vet. No good vet would respond to abnormal feces like that

I'd try raw meat diet if you haven't. It's usually the best although it is more of a pain to feed your cat, but imo it's worth it. Getting your cat to eat it at the beginning is usually the hardest part. It's like if you feed a kid nothing but French fries and burgers they aren't going to want to eat healthy food. My cat had yellow, smelly poop and my vet confirmed he didn't have any diseases or anything so I switched him to raw meat, and I haven't had a problem since. His breath smells better and he's more active and his fur is more shiny and soft, and he doesn't have dandruff anymore. It's not a miracle cure, but it made my cat a lot healthier
>>
>>2112167
That's what I would think.

To be clear I summed my vets response. I've been going to that guy for nearly 20 years. He just assumed it was the food and left it at that.
>>
>neighborhood has a stray cat that's very friendly
>if he sees me he'll run over to the house and hang out for a while
>one of the neighbors takes him to the vet and we both give him food
>suddenly disappeared for months, got worried a fox or another animal might have killed him
>see him running on the side of the road while driving home from work last night and he showed up at the backdoor this morning
I'm so relieved to see him again, maybe the neighbor was keeping them in their garage or something for the winter.

Hope she turns up in good health dude.

Our old lady disappeared for about 10 weeks when she was 11, We'd been scouring the woods and all trying to find her. One day she just came home. No signs of being malnourished, but we took her to the vet for a checkup anyway. Healthy as ever.

She started deteriorating shortly after that, we figured it was her kidneys or an uti or some shit like that, vet couldn't find nothing, gave her the all clear, and sent us off. Shoulda taken her to a different vet after the 3rd time they couldn't find anything.

Is it chronic kidney failure or acute? The former can live quite a while post-diagnosis. I gave my CRF girls subcutaneous fluids once or twice a week and put them on kidney-friendly diet, and they lived 2 and 4 more years before dying of unrelated conditions.

Don't give up hope. Switch to an all-wet diet if you haven't already, consider getting a cat fountain to encourage water intake, and start looking into subq fluid therapy.

Chronic. His kidneys are functioning at 30% of normal.

He already got all wet (Weruva) and the vet recommended him to go on a special prescription diet to help slow the progress of the disease. I haven't given up hope, but at the same time, I've accepted what is going to happen to him one day.

I knew he was ancient when I got him (didn't stop me), but it just really hurt to know what bad shape he is in and to know he is more or less dying slowly.

Feed your cat wet food. It's the next best thing to raw diet, and you can get boxes of them for cheap. Dry food is awful for cats. It is chock full of carbs and fillers, and cats get most of their moisture from the raw meat they eat, so if you feed your cats only dry food they're most likely dehydrated. Free feeding cats is one of the causes of obesity in cats as well
BFF cat food is one of the better brands for a cheaper price. You can get a case of 12 cans for 10 bucks. It's the cheapest kind made by Weruva, which makes some of best cat food imo. I feed my cat plain Weruva brand food

Cats are generally self sufficient if you leave some food for them,
but if you aren't working all the time, you
should be fine.

Looks like a Korat, or a mix of one. Korats have heart shaped heads and darker coats, while Russian blues have elongated, wedge shaped heads and lighter coats (which is where they get their name from)

I've had my cat for like half my life and now she's getting old, I don't want to lose her. She barely survived birth and I wouldn't leave her and now she's such an affectionate little asshole, but she's developed somekind of problem recently where she has problems breathing. Vet says there isn't anything wrong but I can feel it coming.

so do korats, also korats are pretty rare in the usa.

Russian blues don't all have one coat color some have darker coats other have lighter ones. the show cat ones are usually on the lighter side. any striping or white lockets on the neck on the Russian blue usually disqualifies it from show.

I've had my cat for about two months, and she's three years old. Since my bf and I always shower her with affection, she's become spoiled and has started attacking whenever her meows are ignored. She will sit by our chair and meow or stare for attention. If we pat her, she purrs happily and comes in for a hug. If not, she pounces. While I love my cat, my hands are not always free for chin scritches, and sometimes I don't notice her staring. She also always does this if we're walking by her and don't acknowledge her in some way. My ankles are so scratched up. She also bites hard if we have to get up when she's cuddling/sleeping on us.

>pls help me
>>
Should I give my cat a bath if she pissed on herself? I was taking my cat back to my house in her carrier when these 2 dogs ran up to me and started sniffing it. Although she didn't make any noise, I think this may have startled her enough to make her pee as she was wet when I took her out. Her paws were soaked, so I dried her off. I tried bathing her, but she really hated it and I only managed to rinse her for about 30 seconds. Does she really need to be bathed? I hate forcing her to do something.

when's the right time to get a cat? I'm in my second year of uni and not sure if I'll stay in the city when I graduate and might be moving from place to place over then next few years.

but when I think about when I'll be for sure settled, it's going to be when I'm married with a house and I don't wait until then to have a pet in my life again. at what age did you guys get yours?
>>
>>2113597
Right time is when you want it. I'm in my first year uni, moved to a completely different country and cat stayed with parents. After 2 months I got a sacred birman 3 year old male. He can stay home alone every day and when I come home, we hug and cuddle. Didn't scratch or knock down anything so far. Make sure you get a peaceful cat so it doesn't do stupid shit while you're away. As for the cost, if you had cats before, you should know how much they cost. I spend 40$ a month on him (food and litter), but it should be less because he's spoiled and doesn't wanna eat cheap food.

I want a russian blue. I've heard they're meant to be very independent but also deeply attached to their sole owner and not fond of strangers, which makes me worried about if I'll have to leave him with my roommate or with someone else, for an extended period of time, i.e. an international summer internship.

My parents have a cat and dog at home. could you post a pic of your cat btw? birmans are so pretty.

Doesn't it stress you out though? It's a commitment, you'll be with him for a long time. It's not like when my family got a cat as a kid and we knew she'd spend her entire life in the same house growing up with us.

and a responsibility too. you can't just randomly stay out all weekend without calling in a favor because your boy's gotta eat. and he'll miss you too and you'll feel guilty.

The veterinary came in today to check out my two kittens and says they're mostly healthy but since they're strays it's possible they have HIV or some other nasty disease but will only know for sure when doing vaccination in a month.
>>
>>2113703
More common than the vax companies would have you think. How old was the cat? Which vaccine was it? How many times had the cat been vaccinated prior? Before vaccination did the cat display any signs of illness? What were his symptoms after being vaccinated?
>>
>>2113764
She was about five and a half years old, she lived mostly inside but had access to a fenced off garden where she could run around. But iirc it was a feline pneumonitis vaccine(which is also what killed her) but she was generally fit as a fiddle. She had all of her vaccines done regularly, especially everything that was needed. I asked the vet if she should have a few more than normal because she did have a shitty immune system for whatever reason. I assume it's because she was a NFC.
But she was completely fine until I found out she'd died in her sleep when I woke up. Bummer though, she was an asshole but she was a kind asshole.
>>
>>2113726
Does anyone know if this is common?
>>
>>2113703

Not common but can happen. If it died from an attenuated vaccine though then it would have certainly died if it had caught the real disease, which it had a pretty high chance of contracting if it went outside or to a groomers or even the vets, so.
>>
>>2112945
It could've been a stroke, blood clot, heart disease, etc. even if she was a younger cat. I had a friend come home from work one day to discover her ~6-year-old cat dead - no previous symptoms, no prior health concerns, no indication of what had happened except a small spot of black, tarry feces in the litterbox. She's one of the most dedicated, responsible pet owners I know. My cousin's older cat just up and dropped dead one day under the kitchen table.

It sucks not being able to have the answers, but honestly, cats are masters of hiding pain and there are things even the most meticulous doctors won't detect. Sometimes shit like this just happens. Your cat had a good life with a bro who loved her and a quick death in a place she knew and felt safe, which is more than a lot of animals are afforded in this world. Sorry for your loss.

>>2113020
Weruva is better than the prescription diet your vet would probably put your cat on. Check out the ingredients for some popular kidney diets:
https://www.chewy.com/royal-canin-veterinary-diet-renal/dp/118339
https://www.chewy.com/hills-prescription-diet-kd-kidney/dp/54762
I've made this mistake before; do your research before buying into "prescription" foods. Oftentimes they're moneymaker garbage vets recommend because that's what they've been taught to do.

Good luck to you and your cat.

>>2113041
If you can find Taste of the Wild, it's a pretty good grain-free food. I think here it's $12 for a 5-lb bag, obviously cheaper if you buy in bulk.. Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul is roughly the same quality (not grain-free, but it's good stuff) for a similar price.

My cat somehow managed to split one of his back claws. Hard to tell with his squirming but it looks like it's split down the middle. There's no bleeding, he's not limping and in fact he's still hyper as fuck and wanting to hop around everywhere. He's also not in pain because he's not doing that twitchy tail thing or trying to lick at it.

Should I go ahead and take him to get it snipped at the vet?

She might be bored/have pent-up energy. How often do you play with her?

>>2113597
Not during university. College - and the settling period shortly after graduation - are chaotic, uncertain times where a lot of change happens (e.g. your internship example). It's not fair to put a cat through that, especially if you are the type to stay out for a weekend on the fly. I'd advise waiting 'til you graduate and get a job. If you want cat-love before then, look into volunteering or fostering at a local humane society.

>>2113703
>>2113791
What makes you think this had to do with the vaccines? Typically when cats are life-threatening vax reactors, their bodies will tank quickly and violently after they get their shots. I had a cat when I was little... the night after her vaccinations when she was still a young cat, she became extremely lethargic (could not stand), feverish, and vomited a shitton. For the rest of her life, her vaccines were on a more staggered schedule than her sister's, and she'd be pre-treated before receiving them. Never had any problems after that.

Vaccine side effects are common, but serious reactions are very rare. I've worked in animal medicine on and off for about a decade now and have seen more worrying reactions to beestings than shots. I'm surprised your vet would vaccinate against chlamydia in the first place, though...? I've only seen it recommended in cases where cats are visiting groomers, boarding facilities, or cat shows.

>>2113726
>>2113806
It's possible, but very unlikely. An estimated ~3% of cats are infected with FIV, another ~3% FeLV. I currently work at a humane society and in spite of the high number of strays we deal with, we get... maybe half a dozen cats with either disease every month, mostly in unneutered males that have been fighting. I've only seen a handful of kittens with either disease. Don't fret anon, your babs are most likely just fine.
>>
>>2113857
If you can afford them yeah, just to be safe.. It could get damaged even more/the skin could get fucked up especially if he's an active cat. But if you're really tied then its not life or death, keep an eye on him though
>>
>>2113858
Had the vet look at the her, lungs and throat were filled to the brim with mucus. Vet said it was probably the vaccine. Same cat as in >>2112945 She does, or did, occasionally go to cat shows though. My mother likes going to those and was very active in them until very recently. I mean I know she had a weak immune system to begin with, and something in her family tree about heart problems, but I'm just going by what the vet said.
Though I do find it peculiar because the kitten I brought in for the same haven't been affected in the slightest. Kitten's moving to Switzerland in about two weeks so it needed a range of shots over time as per what the law says.

So my cats are both somewhat overweight and this asshole doesn't clean himself as often as he should. Just now i noticed a large amount of dead skin bits on his back where he cleans the least, looks like he rolled in powdered sugar. Going deeper i found there to be a patche of dead/dry skin. Should i just say fuck it and shampoo his fat ass or am i overreacting?

My kitten's stomach has felt lumpy to me since I got her about five months ago. She poops a lot and has the worst gas of any animal I've ever met. Is bad gas and a lumpy, fat tummy enough reason to go to the vet? Could it be an intolerance to something in her diet?

So my family has been talking about getting a cat for a couple of months now but we just never got around to it, my sisters birthday was 4 days ago so her friends just went out and bought her a cat and now we've got this cute thing running around the house. She's apparently 14 weeks old but we've no sure way of knowing currently.

Now we were a bit unprepared for it and we've never owned a cat before (it's a pretty fucking stupid thing to just buy someone but hey). We got some dry food and litter with her, we also went out and bought a few toys, a litter box and ordered a scratching post that should arrive during the week.

The previous owned was apparently a bit "strange", she's pretty thin, I don't know if I'd say malnurished and she doesn't seem abused in any way really, she loves people, we've had a couple of quests over and she will instantly let them pet/handle her, she doesn't scratch furniture and she uses her litter box perfectly. But she does begs for food as soon as we enter the kitchen and will gulp down anything we give her. The previous owned included some dry food but she seems to hate it, we got her some wet food instead but I don't really know what's best for a young cat.

She has a pretty nasty scar on her chin and 2 small sores on the her back left leg that she seems to licks a bit too much. She doesn't seem to be in any pain tho, I've touched her leg and moved it about and squeezed a bit around the wound but she doesn't seem to care. When she goes for a high jump she does avoid putting any weight on the leg for a couple of minutes after.

We're taking her to the vet in a couple of days but is there anything I should pay attention too, should I avoid playing with her if it involes a bunch jumping? What should a young cats diet be like? I heard 4 sets of meals per day at set times, is it too often?

Nobody who has ever owned a cat would tell you that they don't/can't modulate their bite force.
>>
>>2109860
Every single cat you don't own equals a cat having to live on the street.
>>
>>2102686
Probably because cats has much sharper teeth than dogs so it hurts even if they don't put much pressure.

Same deal with my grandma who thinks pushing my cat around with my foot is the same as kicking my cat.
>>
>>2101439
>He's obviously not hurting the cat but I'd feel so fucking bad.

Why? You realize the cat isn't scared right?.

Cat eyes can't focus on objects close to their face. It flinched because it did not know exactly where the hand was and if it was slowing or coming to a stop.
>>
>>2113054
Theres a ton of dry cat foods without carbs and filler. Also keeping clean fresh water out at all times is more than enough to get your cat to drink an adequate amount of water.

Please don't spread disinfo.
>>
>>2103548
I strongly disagree with that. I have a cat who used to vomit every single day until I took him off Science Diet. 100% healthy other than that.
