im going to go see a one year old Rhodie Ridgeback pup tomorrow and was wondering what things I should consider before adopting a Rhodie.

I know some of the fundamentals such as their lifespan, health concerns and general traits. in addition I know they need a lot of exercise and would certainly require training.

But I was wondering what other things im getting into in adopting a Rhodie that I might not be initially aware of.

The musk of the Rhodesian Ridgeback is attractive to brown recluses. Be careful, OP.

I thought I had a rhodie mix for a while (but the WP says rottie mix...pic related lol) so at the dog park I frequently found myself chatting up the purebred rhodie people-- there's a couple breeders in the area so there's several regulars. One thing they all seem to have in common is that their dogs are not trustworthy off leash. I've seen tons of youtube vids with rhodesians out and about w/o leashes so maybe it's a training thing. Also, all the ones I've met have a pretty high prey drive and like to play rough. Cool dogs tho.

cheers, yeah i've heard of their prey drive and im gonna look at training him should I get him.

I'd like to potentially train him to the point where I could take him hunting, so that would take a log time to train for. But if that's the biggest issue, it shouldn't be a problem.

Hunting is a big part of what they were bred for, so I bet if the dog has a decent prey drive and you have the patience to teach it you could make it happen.

Next door neighbour has a rhodie, it is a aggressive do not approach kind of dog. It was on our property and I thought Id stick him in the car and drive him home and he wasnt having it, snarling and mock charging me, I guess maybe it was nervous being out of its territory but in saying that he guards his own territory. So my advice would be to socialise it as much as you can and give him plenty of exercise.

What kind of hunting? Being a form of baying hound he probally would spook deer if you had him by your side just waiting to blood track and not sure they would just indicate and hold off.

most likely deer. But would probably look to hunt birds as well. Its just something that I might do with him, doesn't mean I won't adopt should he be unable to go hunting with me.

I threw it in there as a goal to achieve while training him.

niggers

They used to work in packs hunting down game in the way Americans hunt bears or cougars.

I have a dachshund Im working on getting possums and rabbits with solo, apparently it can be done and alot of people do.

How do you train that? Also how to prevent your dog from just taking off in general in pursuit of prey/scent?
>>
>>2093645

Im using long leads (50 foot) and she can scan for burrows. My vet uses a vibration collar on her vizla to snap it out of prey drive.

any pics? I want to train my dachshund to flush out rabbits or grab badgers
>>
>>2093666

Badgers you will want more than 3 dachshunds. Ive just been training her to scent on my mum and dads pet rabbit (for the grandkids) she is only 14 weeks old.

Food is a great motivator.
Watch out for counter surfing.
They need exercise, lots.
They tend to attach quite strongly; get your pup used to you going out without it; otherwise separation anxiety.
The dog will know when you have a visitor before you do.

Yes, but they work best in groups and they're not bird dogs. They're hounds.
