I rescued new pupper last night. She was quite timid and still is, but has walmed to me pretty decently in a day. I went to bed last night thinking everything was great as she wasn't whining or anything. When I woke up she had got into a bag of treats I left out (shit on my behalf I know) and also thrown her toy around. To be honest that's not too bad, but is there anyway I can further help prevent her getting so bored when she's alone? I'm very active and I walked her for about 3 hours yesterday (most days will be 1 to 2 hours). I caught her at 530 in the morning eating the treats so I took them off her and put her in her crate (which she willing went to lay in with no fuss). Is there anything more I can do apart from. Just positively reinforce her not to do that kinda shit?

I have two dogs, both pound mutts. Great with my daughter and kids in general. Once we got the 2nd dog, the first dog became dog aggressive. We are dog sitting for our neighbor, and tried to introduce them and dog 1 was aggressive. I put dog 2 in his crate and dog 1 was fine with the neighbors dog. So the root of the aggression is being around dog 2. This also manifests when they are in the backyard fence, and other dogs or kids run by and they bark. Dog 1 will bark and snap at dog 2 as they both bark at the kids and dogs running by. What to do?

The period of grieving is over, and I need to find another dog to fill that void.
Now here is the hard part, I can't just go and get any kind of dog.
I need to find a dog that will live at least a decade in an alright environment, do well with a diet that has some people food, not shed alot, not be too incredibly huge, and not get vicious when "el cartero" (the mailman) comes to drop off the daily mail.
This really limits my search for breeds I can acquire easily. It will take some looking, but I can probably find a chihuahua, pomeranian, boston terrier, akita, king charles spaniel, pug, and shiba inu better than others.
The shiba has gotten my attention since i've been reading it meets most of those requirements (not set by me) but kinda doesn't as well.
Does anyone have or have had experience with a shiba? Will they do well in a single senior citizen household?

I have two Jack Russell terriers and they're 14 years old but still act like puppies. They still jump up and down when I come home from work, they're always playing and barking.
I've found myself telling them to act their age every once in a while
I've been a dog owner for years and have come across many different families with terriers or other kinds of dogs and they have had nowhere near the same amount of energy at that age.

I was wondering about dogs bred for shows (appearance) rather than health. When it comes to buying a dog, I want something that is fit and healthy. But some niche breeds only have a few breeders in my area and they are all breeding for shows. Which seems to be mainly based on physical appearance. I don't know that these people even get out everyday to exercise their dogs. A lot of people don't have time these days. So my question is, if dogs have been bred for shows for a few generations could that negatively impact physical endurance, strength, genetic health etc? What if I want to get a small toy dog to run with me or do agility courses but all the breeders here only have them prance around in shows? They obviously haven't been selectively bred for what I want but for old women to take them to shows with their perfect (arbitrary) breed standards.
The dog I've been interested in for a year now is the papillon. I've read contradicting information about them, and it could be the way they are bred in different areas. Some say they are extremely energetic and can go for a 30min jog or hike for 7 hours. I've seen them do agility courses as well. But other sources say they are good for old people, and old people generally are lazy and don't walk or walk super slow once a week and I can't imagine that working well unless the dog was a lot less energetic.

Do you exercise much with them? My terrier's personality has remained the same. He's still enthusiastic and gets excited. But he can't keep up with me when I run. Well, I stopped running with him since I didn't want to kill him. So I'd say he's still fairly energetic but not as much as yours sound. Apparently he has a small heart murmur though.

Find a breeder that health tests.You want patella luxation, Von Willebrand (bleeding disorder) and PRA1 (eyes).
Forget this breeding for show milarkly, all that means is that they're breeding towards a standard. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, your best bet is to go to a dog show and physically meet some breeders/dogs. Find one that health tests and you'll be gravy.
Any trick to help a dog learn verbal cues? My pup picks up hand cues about right away and remembers them, but the only verbal cue she ever picked up are "sit" and when I call her name.

2 questions about my new boxer/shepherd cross
he is shit at walking. I am teaching him loose lead walking which he is learning slowly. With me he walks loose about 60% of the time now. With my GF he doesn't walk loose at all. What can i do?
Also he barks or whimpers at other dogs in the street. I'm scared to let him get near cos i think he might bite. Should i wait for him to be castrated?
Thirdly he was chewing a bone today and my cat got near and he "air snapped" at my cat. He is usually fine with the cat no aggression infact they often play. What do?

I do. I've taught her sit and down and get up pretty much at the same time, but sit is still the only one she picked up the verbal cue for.
My pup will shit inside if the back door is closed, so I leave it open almost all the time, and it's bloody cold now.

Crate train. Take your puppy out on a schedule, and as often as she needs it. Praise like mad when she goes to the bathroom outside. She'll get the hang of it.
When she gets bigger, you can definitely teach her how to slide the door open (she's probably not heavy enough to do it right now.) I had a door like that in my old house and my dog (50 pounds) was able to jump up and slide it open on his own. Shouldn't be too hard.

Well, Collies are a herding dog breed. They don't like it when stuff moves too fast.
ankle biting is just a way your dog is "correcting " you, next time she does that, put her in submission until she's calm (if that's the first time you do it, make sure you have the time to do it correctly) You'll notice she's calm when she takes a big breath and expires a big sigh. The speed at which she breathes is also a big sign.How to do a submission to your dog: put her collar and leash, step on the leash as close to the carabiner (or whatever you snap your leash to the collar with) as possible and just ignore the dog, don't talk, don't ask anything. This is just putting her in a corner and making her reflect on what she did (in a way).
NOTE: this does not hurt your dog physically. it doesn't hurt them psychologically either, but it does work their mind, they learn who is leading and who is following. if they lift you up, you lose leadership.
when doing a submission, keep calm and serene.
the dog may do whatever to make you lift your feet, just ignore it until it's absolutely calm.

Well, some races have differences in how they change and grow up, but once a dog gets older, they get much calmer (except for some breeds but that's not my fault).
make sure to be patient and make him do what you want, when he does something well, you can finish the excercises. that way, you end on a good note, the dog understands the difference between ending up with a failure rather than a success, it'll make it more enjoyable for him. (so like, just do something simple like "sit" at the end.)
By the way, a very important tip: NEVER and I say NEVER EVER be angry when the dog comes, even you are vein bursting mad because he's just fucking around, you bring him back with you and with a smile, you say the command you were going to say (if perhaps you were needing him to go home, you say HOME) and when you're home, it's a fucking party
a dog won't come back to you if you call him and you punish him. in fact, that's how you break dogs, you get angry when you catch them because they didn't come back and then they don't wanna come back at all.
if you didn't already, bring a tasty ass treat with you that'll change his mind.
otherwise, don't start far with puppies, start from like 3 feet with the comes, then 6 feet, then 9 and do it with the leash so that if he doesn't come, you can remind him where to go.
and last thing: puppies are explorers, if you're outside and it smells good, the puppy finds you rather boring compared to the environnement filled with sexy smells.

So I am considering getting a German Shep
I was looking around and trying to find some (I live In Britain) and there is a few sites with some but they are mainly 5+ months old and I was looking for a pupper.
I found one that is being sold using the kennel club website and was wondering if the Kennel club was a good place to buy from, I know it is legit and reputable but is it like selling you something useless like branding so if a pair of shoes has the nike logo it will add £50+ just by having the logo.
Anything I should Know about German shepards that is not obvious or any tips for training.

Kennel club is mainly just to make sure the dog is i̶n̶b̶r̶e̶d̶ purebreed, as in no 1/64th anything else.

As for german shepherds,

Kennel clubs aren't always reputable. Registration means jack shit as far as how well bred the dog is and how reputable the breeder is. The AKC has recognized puppy mills as certified breeding programs. So that alone doesn't mean you should keep your guard down. What you should be paying for is a healthy German Shepherd that looks and acts like a well socialized German Shepherd. Stay away from shit like frogged legs and roached backs, and if the dog seems aggressive whatsoever, either with people, dogs, food or toys, don't bother. Unless that's what you're looking for

Anyone got any tips for dealing separation anxiety in puppies? I have a 11 week old German Shepard x Samoyed and I've had her for a week. Basically everything is going well except she goes mental whenever she's left alone. We thought it was a problem with her crate but she's fine in it when we are around. Is it too early to be concerned about it?
If there was a dog care, equipment, obedience and fitness training sticky what resources would be in it?

My dog's training was going okay, but then both of our cats died and we moved. It's been over a year now and despite calling in trainers and following professional advice, my dog has gotten worse and is still scared of men she doesn't know and can get aggressive with other dogs, though she gets on fine with the other dog she lives with.
She has bitten "strange" men in the past which in one case a lead to the police being notified although no action was taken other than the police letting us know. I am deathly afraid of her getting taken away from me or being taken to court or something and being forced to have her put down. Around family she is a very sweet and loving dog who is probably my best friend.
I'd prefer not to have to muzzle her when we go for walks because she spends the whole time trying to take it off (sometimes succeeding) so instead I have to be very careful and wait for other dogs to pass/keep her on a short lead/shoo away dogs that are off their leads that come up to her etc. and constantly be on guard for any trouble.
I know that this is avoiding the problem rather than tackling it, I would love to be able to safely let her off the lead and to answer the door without having a repeat of the time she lept at the carpet man and almost caused him to fall over. (Now we have to make sure she's shut away whenever men that are "strangers" to her are visiting). She also will sometimes attack things with wheels going by.
This is probably not something that can be resolved quickly and I have doubts it can even be resolved, but is there anything I can do to help lower her aggression?

Have some friends help you out on this one. She really needs to be socialized.
First step is having the stranger/friend in an area with her, preferably the yard. At this point she just needs to be around other people.
Then when she's comfortable with having people just a few meters away from her, invite people over (one person at a time, but different each time) and have her in a separate room. Slowly introduce them again until she's comfortable having people in the house.
If you're tense, she'll be tense. Trust in your dog, but keep an eye on her.
If anyone you know has a dog, or even if you pass a nice person on a walk with their own dog, ask if you could let your dog sniff theirs. For socialization purposes. A lot of people in my area let me do this.
Because of her age, it might take a long time for this to work. But progress is progress. This worked very well with my dachshund who previously was NOT socialized except with her owners and one other dachshund. It took a year and a half, and she's still a bit wary and could snap at people who approach quickly.

Hi friends, can I get advice on how to better train my girl to fetch? When I come home she super excited and grabs her toys. So I throw it and she grabs it and kind of brings it back. It's best to work with someone who has expertise until you have some earned knowledge and experience, I would encourage you to first join a training club and go through all the levels of basic obedience (usually goes Puppy/Basic, Intermediate, Advanced/CGC, CGCA/CGCU), and then after partner up with a friend who is well-versed in training (has trained multiple dogs for working or obedience titles--if you go to a good breeder they can probably both help and put you in contact with others who are training toward similar goals).

Most dogs are fine moving and you don't need to do anything special aside from keeping a close eye to make sure he doesn't run off in all the excitement. I've moved five times with my dog and have never had a problem.

Long story short, me and my fiance got a female puppy about a year and a half ago before we knew much about BYB or bad breeding in general. The people that gave her to us claimed she is half pit, half lab, and I'm pretty sure the pit side was one of those more bully breed, short, barrel chested dogs.
Her bag legs are fucked up though she doesn't act like she's in pain, and I'm pretty sure her front legs are shorter than her back legs.
So I want to know what that is called so that I can bring it up to the vet and see if there is any possible corrective surgery I can get done on her before she gets too old, and while I have a well paying job.

I just adopted a 3 year old male Found-hound/possible other hound mix.
He came house broken and with a great temperament, not food protective, and he's just unbelievably easy going. Fell asleep on the ride how which was only a ten minute drive. Definitely not a guard dog, but I've got another dog for that. Good with kids, good with other dogs, but of course I don't leave him unmonitered with kids or dogs.
He doesn't seem to know any commands though. He has a few bad habits like getting into trash and up on counters, so I got him a crate for when he's alone.
Any tips on training this type of dog personality? I have trained a Cattle dog in the past very successfully, but I recall it being much easier once he learned I was the dominant one. This guy doesn't seem to care who is dominant. I have a feeling he used to be a hunting hound because he was picked up as a stray by the SPCA.
This dog is just kind of in his own little world. I'm thinking of starting really simply and just getting him to give me eye contact when I say his name. I'll probably use the clicker method like I did before.
He doesn't seem to be familiar with walking on a leash, he just kind of bumbles around or stops randomly. So I was going to do a lot of square walking exercises.

I think an easier approach rather than a firm hand would be good with him, and probably just stopping him when he's about to do something bad and showing him what you would rather he do.
Also, though a lot of people are going to tell you the dominance theory has been disproven, I still think its important to keep a more parent/child relationship with your dog, as I feel like we have bred them to act like obedient children honestly. Yea making sure my cattle dog knew he wasn't dominant changed everything. He was really bad when I first got him. He bit me straight in the face during the second week I had him when we where playing. Not hard, enough to break skin, but pretty damn hard.

Depends. A byb GSD will cost thousands in hip replacement, or an early death. A dog bred by a reputable breeder will also cost quite a lot. You happen to chose one of the most popular and most badly bred dog to choose from.
As I see it, you have two choices when looking for this dog; get one cheap OR get one that's healthy.
If you want a cheap one, mine as well go cheap as you can get and go to an animal shelter, look for a GSD-looking dog that's already fixed, UTD on shots, microchipped etc and save up for possible health issues along the way. Or, find a reputable breeder which, considering the breed, is not only difficult but debatable.
A hip replacement alone (not including office visits, meds, after care etc) costs anywhere from $1000-3500 depending on certain variables. Reputable GSD breeders can range from $1000-3500 on puppies, possibly more if the dogs are good for showing/breeding.
Unfortunately with such a popular breed, you hit into the same crowd that occupies toy dogs. Dogs that cost $15000 or more because they were imported, because their backs are stacked, because their parents were champions etc. Just like with the toy dogs that cost thousands and sometimes hundreds of thousands, there is no reason to pay that much for a GSD. They try to latch onto people who don't know better, but that doesn't mean a breeder charging 2g for a pup is trying to scam you. Do a ton of research, because both of the breeds you're looking at suffer from popularity and a ton of bad breeding.

You listed one trait you're looking for and that it can't be small and probably not medium sized.
Personally I have found that aussies and border collies express this quality very well. Those are both rather medium dogs.
GSDs that I've had would follow me more loosely but sleep on the bed or by the door. They're a bit larger than the other two breeds. And lastly the two Saint Bernard dogs I've had have expressed a more childish neediness than 'velcro' qualities. Always having to have that touch connection, either with a paw on my foot or backing themselves onto my knees. If you are a tiny thing yourself or frail I can see this being an issue.
So from my experience, from smallest to biggest tends to get further away from that quality. Granted I've only owned 1BC, 2Aussies, 2 GSDs, and 2 saints.

Get her a collar to get comfy with and adjust to. I got my pup at 8 weeks and started just walking her up and down my driveway to get her used to a leash.
Also, don't make the mistake of letting her pee and poo inside. I regret it very much.
When you start to leash train her, use positive reinforcement to teach her that by your side is the best place to be. This will hopefully stop early on leash pulling.

Ya, I'm not completely sure if it is affecting her or not is the thing. She has a limp/weird run that has gotten worse as she's gotten older. She can run pretty fast, but if she's doing a light jog she doesn't really..ah itself hard to explain without a video or something. You need to go to the kennel club's good breeders club and contact people on there: there WILL be a waiting list, and you won't get your puppy tomorrow. Sorry, that's just not how this works. I had to wait two years for my sheltie due to waiting lists, but the wait was worth it in the end as I now have a five year old very healthy sheltie, with a solid background, that is a very much loved family pet (who I also show and do agility with).

Starting my search now to have a new pup in time for late spring or early summer. I have a preference for the giant breeds. Have a big house and a fenced in yard. I have a lot of experience with dogs but never had a giant. Basically, I had two dogs put down this year. Basically both were similar ages, both just reached a point where they weren't functioning well enough to move much.

Raising two puppies of a similar age along side each other can lead to problems. Look up "littermate syndrome."
If she has you, she doesn't really NEED another dog for companionship. She might enjoy it, though. So if you still want to get another, why not look into adopting a dog who's already grown, or at least a puppy who's quite a bit older than her?

He will gingerly take a bone, but he has a good temperament and doesn't resist if you try and take it. I thought of tieing a bone to a toy, but I doubt he'd mind me taking it.
My other dogs would play if I covered their head with a towel or blanket and play bite through it. If I put a towel on his head, he believe it is the end of days cometh and he runs desperately trying to get it off.
I'd like him to at least learn tug-of-war.

How do you teach a dog the "show pose" where they look majestic as fuck?
Also how effective is it to train your dog by putting him yourself however you want (sit, down, etc), then calling out the cue compared to shaping/rewarding the dog for small steps toward the end result/luring?
Where is a good breed website that I can read about which health tests each breed should have?
A good friend of mine got a german shepherd puppy from a breeder and I don't believe they are registered with a kennel club (but I'm not sure, I haven't got to talk to them).
I want to check them out and see what tests they do on their dogs because his dog is 7 months now and doesn't have that weird sloped back, looks and feels like he is solid as far as body and structure go, and is really well tempered and smart. Honestly I'm freaking jealous and really want one, and have been wanting one for years, but I want to make sure these guys do do health tests. I don't personally care about the registered dog show dogs or agility training and all that, I just want a healthy GSD pup with a good disposition that can handle hiking with me.
I'm gonna be adopting a foster dog in a few days (unless he hates me, which is unlikely). 3 year old chill, affectionate pibble with no people, dog, or cat aggression issues. Playful cuddlebug according to the foster.
Really looking forward to meeting him, hopefully on the 2nd.

What is the best way to socialise it ? Is there a more affordable way than "puppy classes" or whatever it is supposed to be called in English ?
Also I'm already torn between taking him out to see the real world, meet people, places, noises and stuff as soon as I get him ; or keep him inside until his vaccines are effective, which could apparently keep him from becoming a happy and confident puppy.

The dog is a aussie/lab mix. He's not a certified breeder, it's a mixed breed and he hasn't had his shots yet.

My doggy gets sick in car trips. It's not that she's scared of it, she jumps in the car by herself most times, I just believe she gets motion sickness. She starts to salivate and I had her vomit today. She's only 9 months. I've read it's to do with their ears not being fully developed and they get crook because of it? Should I just not take her for ages and try a couple weeks down the track? Would getting calming stuff from the vet help?
