What if something terrible happened to him? What if a cat killer found him, lost and afraid in their yard, so they toss out a few bait treats and then lure your cat in? What if they tortured your poor kitty for hours before it finally died from the trauma of it all? What if it kept thinking of you as it mewled in pain but you weren't there to help it??
