Has anyone ever thought of keeping their pet's skull? I've had thoughts of properly preparing the skull and putting it into a respectful display like pic related. I feel it's less creepy and space-saving than taxidermy and more identifiable than a box of ash.

I guess it wouldn't just be that nice to decapitate and skin your loved pet, nor to dig up its rotting carcass, and then boil it.

But if you're up for it, go to town.

Why not a nice urn? Urns are way more tasteful and very identifiable.

Boiling skulls is shit, don't do it.

And yes OP I have two of my dog skulls, some rat skulls and a cockatiel skeleton. I've skinned and mounted things before so you could say I was used to it at that point. Sure I'm sad my pet died but at that point they are dead and that's it. What I loved about them is gone.
I'd mount up my current old dog but I adopted her from a young woman who couldn't keep her anymore and while as far as concerned she has no say in it, but I'd feel bad if she found out. Same if it was an animal I adopted from a shelter, least they think I killed them for their skin. But that's really just a moral issue.

Anyway cut off the head, macerate in it water, after all the tissue is gone soak it in more water with dishsoap and there you go. Done. If you want to whiten it, dilute hydrogen peroxide with water and let it soak a bit.

Just bury it in the backyard under a nice tree.

Adding onto this:

I use purple power industrial cleaner and degreaser, instead of dish soap I find it works a little better.

Also to give it a nice color afterwards I used hair developer, it contains peroxide and it whitens skulls perfectly. Look up taxidermy forums for the best one to use.

Used to have a skull cleaning business, and once in a while between hunting seasons someone would bring in a cat head or dog, one time a guy brought in a horses head for me to whiten
