Only cats with super long fur and are constantly fucking filthy because their humans never bathe them get hairballs.
A cats toungue is very rough, almost like sandpaper. So if the fur is long enough then ordinary grooming causes them to swallow the fur. And the unusually long strands aren't passed safely through the digestive tract. They get tangled up in the stomach and the cat barfs it up.
Or, if the cat gets into something nasty that causes it to excessively groom itself, then the length of fur doesn't matter, once enough individual hairs are swallowed the cat barfs it all back up.
