Any other people here on /an/ that breed Moths?

If so, what species do you breed?

I have a few species.
Here is a pic of my Saturnia pyri, Instar 2 and 3

Depending on the species you either use netted cages, Plastic boxes or raise them on their living host plant in a sleeve.

If I want new species, I usually get the eggs from other breedes in exchange for other species.

here's a pic of a Citheronia regalis Larva from last year.
I hope the'll eclose soon, because the Pupae showing no signs of hatching whatsoever.

I don't breed them but I do take caterpillars in to keep them safe till they pupate and eclose before releasing them.
I have had 30ish so far this year and have two more Light Brown Apple Moths left to eclose as well as a mystery pupa that I found in a flowerpot, pic related.
I need to get out and find some more, I love the adorable spiky little guys.

How did your interest in moths start and what advice would you give to a beginner/someone who's interested?

Also what kind of enclosure do you keep them them?

Ever since I was a little kid, I went out with my friends to collect caterpillars.
We put them in cages and let them grow and pupate. Depending on the species, we usually released them as adults.

My fascination never ended.
It is just amazing how they change after each shedding.

I would say, do your research first and choose an easy species. The ones that have no diapause are more suitable for newcomers.
At least that's what I think.

If you have any specific questions, just ask

How do you ensure that exotic moths don't escape and ruin the ecosystem?

How do you source host plants for exotic moths?

What do girls think of your hobby?
>>
I rescue/raise Pseudosphinx tetrio, and sometimes Automeris sp. and Spilosoma congrua. But of course, if I find any other I also bring them home and care for them. I live in Brazil where people simply murder all caterpillars on sight due to multiple stupid myths.

I love tiny moths for the cute factor but the big ones like the Pseudotetrio are just hnngg in beauty. I can sit for literally hours with one on my hand and just stare at every small detail.

>>2144226
I keep them in netted cages or plastic containers, depending on the species. They are not able to escape.

Once the damn neighbour cat destroied a flight cage at night. Luckily it was a native species.

Many exotic moths accept a variety of host plants, eg. Salix sp, Quercus, etc.

Well, depends on the girl. Some really like it, some do not bother. But there are none who are disgusted, to my surprise.

Also, S. pyri are now in fourth instar
they would have grown faster if it wasn't so fucking cold and wet this year.

Same for the H. cecropia, they should be in 3rd instar, but still are in first.

Also, it looks like two of my Citheronia regalis pupae are close to "hatching"
looks like the work last year is paying off finally, I thought they wouldn´t eclose, because they moved so little

and absolutely great pictures

Here is a pic of one of the cages, In this one, there are about 60 S. pyri

the cages are usually all lined up on one side of the house.

please excuse the dirty bottom of the cage, but they eat a lot and therefore shit a lot too.

Photo was taken bofore cleaning
I just "pour" the droppings out and put the caterpillars and twigs back in
sometimes I disinfect the cage if needed

I collect wild, buy online, and breed any and all species I can. Here are my six oak eggars that I bred from their wild-caught parents, with four and one skin huddled up in their hide. They love that thing, when they're not eating they're always in it. Lasiocampa quercus.

I have a collapsible laundry basket made of nylon mesh. Would that work if I just turn it upside down?

sure, just make sure you get an easy species which likes high air flow, like Actias luna or Antheraea polyphemus/pernyi

>>2147196
finally, one of the C. regalis hatched this morning, a really big female

Let's hope more hatch soon and I get at least one pairing, because that seems to be the problem with this species.

also, the Hyalophora cecropia finally reached 2nd instar
I hate the unusually cold weather this year
>>
>>2149330
If you're in the US I would advise you to put her in one of those cages to attract wild males.
They're indeed hard to inbreed but they will mate with ones that are unrelated.

I tried exchanging pupae with other people, but I wasn't able to find people who would like to trade

What would I give to breed this species.
but I think they won't be available in Europe anytime soon

Do they only get the weird little spiky ladybug balls on the final instar?
>>
>>2152908
They get them in 3rd instar, but they look a bit different than the ones they have in final instar

but they actually already have them, the tubercles are just black at this point in time, they get their color after the next molt
