Snek thread!

I plan to add some style of snek to my reptile menagerie sometime this summer. It's hatching season right now and it's been fun watching all the breeders posting their early clutches for the year so far.

I just go by the whole long side short side rule, if your snake can stretch out to the length of the long side plus the short side, and wrap the corner, you should get a bigger one.

ok

My littly male here has a "problem"
It doesn't seem to bother him, but it bothers me.

The scales on a part of his belly look a bit like a stuck shed (it isn't) but small parts of the skin is coming off a bit (only the transparent one, he is not loosing scales)

The belly also has a few scratches (pic related)

Do I have to worry about it, or is it just because of crawling on rough surfaces?

At first, I was thinking scale rot, but his enclosure is neither dirty nor too wet (if anything, it's a bit too dry)

I hope it is understandable

Can anyone please tell me what's wrong?
>>
>>2136472

Definitely not scale rot. Looks more like he just rubbed up against a scratchy surface. I guess keep an eye on it if anything changes but I'm not seeing anything in that pic i would consider cause for concern.

Hello there snek lovers. As well as posting an image or two also wanted to ask a question. So i have a female ball russo and a male ball pastel apparently also possible het clown (will post pics) that a breeder friens gave to me. Both are of age to start breeding but no real clue where to start honestly. They're just now getting acclimated to their new setups(theyve been in there about a week). Just looking for tips and tricks for the future really. Will also post setup pics if people are interested. Also have other sneks(like my dumerils in pic) so any interest will be responded to. Thanks folks.

Okay /snek/ let's talk ball python morphs. I've wanted to add a BP to my reptile family and am browsing around for what sort of morph to aim for that continues to look nice as adults. Looking at general opinion, it seems pastels, albinos and axanthics tend to fade quite a bit over time. Morphs that old up seem to be lessers, fires, clowns, and the leucistics. Pieds too but those are more money than i want to spend... and i don't really care for that look much anyway.

I really like how lessers and fires look as adults. Any other common non-expensive ones i should look in to?

Poor guy! He looks weathered as hell. I didn't know grassies played dead, that's interesting. I'm not too read up on European snake behavior.

Pic related is one of my 6 serpetine finds this weekend! This kid was hanging out in the middle of a trail. Also found a black rat, two garters, and two Nerodia. Nothing too exciting, but I was searching high and low for copperheads and timber rattlers and struck out on both.

Here's the Thamnophis, found him periscoping right next to a busy trail but no one had noticed.

Some frigid bitch walked by and scowled saying "Oh, that's a really bad idea, you shouldn't handle snakes. You will give them all kinds of diseases."She also thought it was a black rat.

Hid my power level and just ignored her. Also saw a black bear sleeping in a tree about 500 feet away!

That's a new one to me. People are weird. I've heard the usual stuff from people that think everything that isn't a garter is venomous, but somebody saying don't touch snek because YOU could pass on disease to THEM is an extra degree of special.

Ugh, she was one of those crotchety know-it-alls who always has some unsolicited opinion to interject into every situation. I could just tell by looking at her wrinkled fucking face.

God forbid I try to show the kids nearby and educate them on how snakes aren't to be feared or shoveled in half at every encounter. Luckily everyone else who walked by was either fascinated or asked questions.

Great finds!

I wish there would be as many species where I live.
But we don't have nearly the variety.

all in all snakes are really rare here, which I think is sad. Luckily, every species is protected now.

The grass snakes are more common, but the other ones are pretty hard to find (depending on the region, of course)

If you hike to about 2000m sea level, you often find V. berus.
If you get a bit higher, you might be able to find solid black specimens, which are allways a highlight.

Already found an acknowledged breeder and the vivarium is almost ready.

I'm unsure about the bedding though .
What do you use?

i like that red reptile bark, although during a shed sometimes the dust can get between scales. no big deal though. theres always newspaper, but it looks like shit

Cypress mulch.

Not this. Dont use cypress or any aeromatic scenty shit. Aspen or paper, or reptile bark. Id start with paper towel for a couple weeks to assure your snake doesnt have mites on arrival, also to make sure hes pooping regularly.

>shitty pet
>difficult feeders
>messy
>harder to house properly

The baby I had, was a baby so obviously handeling wasnt an issue, and would be less of an issue then one grown in the wild. It ate a DEAD minnow the day i got it, theyre huge scavengers not problem feeders at all. And i think you meant theyre more fun to house, maybe not if your broke and cant afford a good setup, but semi aquatic tanks are my favorite. Also theres tons of retic, tree python, anaconda fans out there and theyre super aggressive. Its just a badass snake.

thiaminase

hope you like looking at skin lesions

watch less tv and touch more snakes, you're wrong.

There's nothing wrong with cypress mulch (reptile specific mix, not garden center mix) as a substrate for snakes and, depending on climate, can be helpful in maintaining correct humidity.

The thing to look out for is 100% cypress. 'Blended' cypress mulch often also contains pine and cedar, which you definitely do not want in your tank.

I don't think it's that uncommon to not have the instinctive fearful reaction to snakes that many people have, is it? I mean some people have the same reaction to rodents or spiders but it's not common enough to be considered anywhere near universal.

Lmao youre retarded, also, please show me your retic or anaconda. I dont need to handle one to know theyre more aggressive than your ball python you probably have. Of course snakes have their personalities and youll get a good one every now and then, but you cant breed behaviour out of a snake. Just like the whole pitbull argument, though you cant train a snake like a dog.

>comparing a reitc or anaconda to a northern water snake

Gtfo 99% percent of everyone, if they had to live alone in a room with one or the other, would choose the water snake.
