Show me your best moth
CanĀ“t wait until mine start to hatch after their dormancy, should be soon
I love their caterpillars and the adult moths are absolutely stunning too

The best moth is one that provides a stegodyphus social spider colony with subsistence.
MOTHS GET OUT OF MY PANTRY!
REEEEEEEEEEE
>>2105909
Species?
>>2105972
I don't know about the moth, but if I remember correctly, the spiders are stegodyphus dumicola.
>>2105968
Close your flour etc. containers.
>>2105968
It's your fault for having a cozy pantry.
>>2105907
this mofo has a fucking duck on its back
Sup
I saw this cool one in Belize.
Gee I wish I had some of these moths in Virginia. Only ones I've seen are dark, thin, and hairless motherfuckers. One summer they would slam really hard into the window to my room, hard enough to make a loud thud.
>>2105909
>>2105970
They are not THAT big, about 13cm wingspan
>>2105972
Loepa oberthuri
pic are their caterpillars from last year
From /tg/ with love
Here, was attached to grandma's door the other night.
>>2106435
Cute. Is it a Io moth?
>>2106040
that's punpun
>>2106440
Sure looks like it.
>>2105956
Isn't it the same species of moth that rapes other moth's cocoons?
This was frank, a gothic moth I found as a caterpillar on my shoelaces.
I have had two more of them since, all big fluffy qts.
>>2106536
A lot of the caterpillars I collect are Little Brown Apple Moths, I have collected and released 15-20 of them this year alone.
There are 3 pupas in a tub on my shelf on my shelf, two caterpillars in a tub and at least 30 more 'pillars outside on a bush directly next to my back door.
I love lepidoptera so much
>>2106540
I mean Light Brown Apple Moth, I always say little, I have no idea why
Bonus moth I found on a wall outside
>>2105909
STOP SPAMMING BORT
REEEEEEE
I love da mothies. They're so cute!
>>2106092
FUCK IT'S SO TINY~
I wish I could hold it, 10/10 moth right there
Don't you all wish moths were at least the size of kittens (the actual body, not including wings) so we could pet them without wrecking their fur?
I wish I could hold one, like in my arms
>>2106895
Pet moths for everyone! Just make sure that your caterpillar gets plenty of yummy leaves so it'll get nice and fat and your moth will live longer! Moths can't eat or drink so take care of those needs early!
>>2106907
>Moths can't eat or drink so take care of those needs early!
Only some species don't have mouthparts in their adult stage, there are many that can eat/drink still.
>>2106981
this
Saturniidae for example don't have mouthparts, Sphingiidae do have mouthparts.
There are many more families that do or do not have the ability to eat as adults
>tfw used to be scared of moths
What a shameful display
>>2107020
OMG! That's so cool! I totally thought that none of them could eat or drink as adults. Thank you! You've expanded my knowledge and I totally appreciate that.
>>2107264
No problem, bro
Also, here is a handfull of Citheronia regalis caterpillars from last year
CanĀ“t wait until they start eclosing this year
I had a couple of these hanging around my house a while ago. Why are moths so much better than butterflies?
>>2107328
>>2107331
I helped my son raise a couple of these last year.
I have some emperor moth cocoons from last year. I'm pretty sure they should be emerging now. Anyone know anything about raising them because I want to know where I went wrong? the caterpillars all seemed pretty healthy and I only lost a few. They did however experience about 4 days of not being fed while I was on holiday and couldn't find any of their food plants. they did all stillp upate but did that maybe have an effect on them?
I dunno. I feel like I've failed the little guys
Drinker moth from when I was trapping. (west coast, scotland) My favourite moth so I'm going to get a tattoo of it next month
>>2107382
they should still be fine. sometimes pupa take a while to hatch.
>>2107420
is there anything I should be doing to encourage them?
>go outside
>always had an affinity towards bugs
>see a moth on a leaf
>poor thing was dead
>I left it there in case it was sleeping.
seriously this was the most beautiful moth I have ever had the privilege of witnessing.
>>2107430
depends on the species
maybe they hatch another month, maybe the diapause was too cold,...
if yyou tell is the spiecies, we could help you better.
Emperor moth could be anything from Saturnia pyri to Bunaea alcinoe
>>2106435
I saw a similar.
>>2107585
ah yeah. Pavonia
Although a google has told me "late" april so I suppose there's still time
Saw this at my house anyone identify ?
>>2107724
Telling us your location makes it easier to ID.
But this could be the Virginian Tiger Moth
>>2107062

now every time i see one they're a fun friend

This isn't my picture but I found one of these dead and framed it in one of those shadowboxes.
Eacles imperialis imperialis
Japanese giant silkworm, Caligula japonica with a mayflower (hawthorn), which was promptly eaten after the shoot.
This picture really does not do the brilliant sapphire blue spiracles dotting this species' sides justice.

>I was the guy who did the experiment earlier this year giving a sample of hornworms fluorescent dye in their food to look for any visual side effects
>I'll be taken the single viable pupa out of refrigeration and let it develop
>will post updates and a quick summary once it emerges
What kind of moth is this?
>>2109830
Hippotion rosetta maybe
>>2109839
>Hippotion rosetta
> It is found from southern Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka, east across Thailand, southern China and Taiwan to southern Japan (the Ryukyu Archipelago) and the Philippines, then south across south-east Asia to the Andaman Islands, eastern Indonesia, the Solomon Islands and the Torres Straits of New Guinea.
Weird, I'm in Chile.

>Weird, I'm in Chile.
see, you give a location and you get an identification...
Hyles annei
>>2109862
Nice, thanks. I had never seen these before, we had a strange mid summer rainy week and there were moths everywhere in Santiago.
>>2109863
You're welcome.
I've always wanted to visit Chile.
Someday.

I mean moths are probably the cutest type of bug out there. I would definitely cuddle a moth girl.
>>2106540
I have a genuine phobia of moths. You would be my neighbour from hell. This entire thread has been nightmare fuel, proper horror show. I thought I was on /x. Keep breeding them they're a necessary evil.
>>2111639
Well, at least you're doing the right thing and looking through the thread in order to desensitise yourself instead of being a little bitch and posting about how they should all die and then closing the tab.
>>2111369
>yandere mothgirl
Oh baby
I didn't think I would grow attached to my Tarantula's food when I got it. Cockroaches are so damn cute. Now I want a moth.
Plz help. I'm addicted.

>>2113860
CUTE!
>>2108094
Pandorus Sphinx.
They should be in my area within the next month.
how do moths know they aren't dead
>>2115193
not sure, but it probably has something to do with nociception
I told my friend about how I like moths and now she keeps sending me pics of moths in her area.
Only problem is I'm jelly as fuck since there are like none in mine.
>>2109810
It's a shame that Hawk-Moth's are so based when their Larval form is such a pest.
>Late evening class is boring as fuck
>Step outside to have a snack and wake up
>See pic related
>Get him to crawl on my finger
>Ate chips with that little dude for ten minutes
Moths are the most bro-tier of insects.

>>2107062
I'm scared of moths, trying to desensitize myself. Some of these ones are cute but the ones I see around here are fucking terrifying.
>>2117551
Ik, I have a sacrificial area of potato plants planted where I'm going to release the adults. Hornworms are way overpriced as a reptile food.
And the adult form are fanfriggintastic pollinators. i just wish there was less of a risk of crop damage.
>>2119538
/an/ is a comfy board, anon
Comfy like the moth
>>2108115
Luna moths are cool as fuck, they even look cool when their caterpillars
moth i found in my yard a while ago

SO UHH
SOME CATERPILLARS EVOLVE INTO MOTHS?
>>2120381
Yea, this makes them annoying to feed
You always think you are hurting them
>>2120425
no, all caterpillars "evolve" into birds

It's a native species here, but I've only ever seen one dead individual, so they are kinda special to me
Can't wait to see the caterpillars live for the first time (Also the adult moths next year in April-May)
>>2120434
ANON
YOU HAVE CHANGED ME
Sometimes I draw them!
>>2121061
This Is sweet
How about this monster??
>>2121972
THAT'S A BIG MOTH
>>2121972
Looks like Actias luna
here is one of my Attacus atlas females which eclosed last year
>>2122050
I fucking love the worried snake faces on Atlas moth wings.
I have no idea how anybody can be afraid of these things. Bees, ok, they can sting you in theory, and are somewhat less fluffy, but moths?
Carpenter bees have the softest fur of any animal I have touched, by the way.

Inornate pyrausta
Found just the right and left bottom wings of a luna moth stuck to the top of my bird feeder after a recent storm. Never seen them around here. RIP.
>>2121061

Saturnia pyri first instar
>>2125963
It's great. I don't know what aerodynamics actually are, but they sure look like they've got a lot of them.
>>2112173
Mothman scared the shit of me when I was a kid. I didn't even know where Point Pleasant or West Virginia was but the idea of a big moth dude flying around with his glowing red eyes was enough to freak me out.
>>2120257
Nice Cecropia!
Here's one I caught like 2 years ago...
