>Abronia graminea is an endangered arboreal alligator lizard described in 1864 by Cope. This species is endemic to the highlands of the states of Veracruz and adjacent Puebla, Mexico. It is considered to be moderately common and is regularly recorded, but its abundance is decreasing. Animals inhabit bromeliads in the canopy of montane pine-oak and cloud forest. It seems unlikely that this species can be found in degraded habitat. This is a viviparous species. The species is threatened by deforestation and degradation of habitat, largely through the conversion of land to agricultural use. The pet trade is a potential aid to the preservation of this species through captive breeding programs.

any tips on how to clean driftwood. i'm cleaning my tank out tomorrow for my beardie. i read somewhere you can boil the drift wood. does that sound right?
>>
>>2105019
Boil, bleach, bake.

Thats some quick answers. Wait for more knowledgeable people.
>>
>>2105019
>>2105019

Boil is the easiest and most effective if your wood fits in a pot. Bake is slower but still works. A diluted bleach solution is something I would only do if the wood doesn't fit in the stove.
>>
>>2105023
thanks anon. i just want to make sure i do it right and not poison my little guy or set my apartment on fire lol
>>
>>2105029
just boil in water or should i add a little bleach? or what >>2105023 said boil it then bleach it then bake it
>>
>>2105031

For baking, you do 200 degrees for about one hour. That's well below the ignition temp of wood but you have watch it the whole time. This is why boiling is first choice if possible.
>>
>>2105035

Just plain water for boiling.

Anybody else have African Clawed Frogs? I have one girl, her name's Bean and she's awesome. Pic related

They're super easy to care for, easy pets, and fun to watch swim around. They also look funny when they eat. I'm surprised I've never heard of anybody else here owning one. Almost like a poor man's Budgett's frog

I would love to see pictures of other people's ACFs, or just any type of frog/toad in general, if you have them

Dude she's awesome, big and fat, cute, kinda weird-looking, and strangely friendly.

It's ridiculous how much they tame once they relate you to food. Every once in a while (I was actually just doing this a few minutes ago) I'll get some freeze-dried shrimp or mealworms and stick my arm in her aquarium. She'll come right up to my hand and eat right out of it, and then swim around and kind of sit in the cup of my palm while looking to see if I have more food. She's very comfortable around me so long as I don't make any crazy sudden movements.

And they eat anything made of protein, too. I feed Bean shrimp pellets, mealworms, small crickets, cut-up pieces of superworm, nightcrawler chunks, freeze-dried shrimp and krill, and occasionally baby reptomins. And while I wouldn't recommend doing it all the time due to potential toxins on your hands, you can feed them by hand. There's literally no potential harm because they don't have teeth or even tongues. Bean nibbles my finger tips expecting food and it feels really funny and soft

Like sorry for the long post about trying to shill ACFs onto you guys, but they're seriously awesome pets, super sturdy and really cheap. Again, highly recommended
>>
>>2105572

I say go for it. They can and will take pretty much any water parameters you put them in, and I got Bean for like $10 at a local pet store. Just make sure that the water you keep them in hasn't contacted metal, for whatever reason, metal ions in the water really fucks them up. 10 gallons per adult, the only downside is that you can't keep anything in there that's smaller than they are or else they'll try and eat it.

Also (and this is a mixed bag of good/bad) they're one of the only frogs immune to chytrid. It's good because it won't kill them, but it's bad because they can carry it unbeknownst to you and spread it to other herps. Just isolate it for a few weeks when/if you get one and put some anti-fungal treatment in the water.

All in all, though, I'm a huge fan. I'd say ACFs are a pretty well-kept secret in the herp community, I'm amazed that not a lot of people keep them, on here, at least

Just drop them in with tweezers. They like to hunt so eating out of a bowl isn't very fun. You also get the benefit of making sure your herp is eating.
>>
>>2106648
i got a mealworm feeder. it sticks to the glass and looks fucking badass
>>
>>2106648

glass bowl with vertical sides about 1 inch high is sufficient to hold mealworms. you can also use the disposable plastic dishes that have a lip that overhangs so mealworms can't climb out.

letting mealworms loose in a tank is not a good idea. they will bite your reptile. they will burrow in the substrate and pupate.

How do you deal with your pets not getting on. I got a new lizard today and kept it in the new enclosure while it settles in. But I then went to get out my beardie to hold while at the PC (new enclosure behind), my beardie who never, ever gets stressed/black beards, is the most chilled out little thing caught the new lizard though the corner of her eye while on my lap and just went the darkest shade I've ever seen as became really afraid.

I knew they wouldn't be best of friends and had no intention of them physically interacting but it just made me really upset to see my beardie get so stressed as I'd still like to have be able to have them in the same room occasionally (but not able to get to each other, like how it was with the new lizard in enclosure and beardie on my lap).

So I have a leopard gecko that eats superworms/mealworms but I wanted to try something healthier. I bought some dubia but he didn't much care for them, and more importantly my roommate FLIPPED out about them like a retard so I had to give them away.

I'm thinking about Phoenix worms. How healthy are they as a staple diet?
>>
>>2107527

*sorry meant to say phoenix worms are very high in calcium

butterworms are a good overall balanced food item
>>
>>2107527
>despite their name, they are not high in fat. butterworms are very high in calcium

Literally the feeder with the highest amount of fat and lowest amount of calcium on your chart.

Do you even read the charts before you post them?

i see that. i downloaded that chart without looking. now doing some more research, it seems the numbers are all over the place on butterworms. i don't understand this discrepency.
>>
>>2107533
You also failed to mention that Leopard Geckos become very addicted to them and will refuse to eat anything but them if they become hooked.
>>
>>2107534

What? I've never heard that.

I'm deleting that first chart. I can't find any other sources that agree with that one, so I assume it to be in error. Several sources confirm the information in chart #2.

Person with the Leo again.

I have heard that waxworms are fatty and addictive and only to be used for sick or underweight geckos. I've never heard of butterworms before so I am not sure about them. That chart doesn't make Phoenixworms look too bad (at least better than mealworms) but what's with the missing data?
>>
>>2107544

I don't know. I've been looking in to this the past half hour and am increasingly confused about the origin of these numbers. Good peer reviewed data just isn't there.

In any event, the numbers on phoenix worms seem to be solid and you can confidently feed them to your gecko in addition to your other regular feeders. The only argument around phoenix worms is whether they are pretty good or very good.

I do feed butterworms to my geckos as one of several insects in the rotation without any trouble. They have done no harm. That's just personal experience and of course has no scientific value. Grain o' salt. More variety the better though.
>>
>>2107544

small hornworms and small silkworms are also a good dietary supplement. kinda spendy though.

Is it normal for a new tegu to be so calm. I got a 4 month old one yesterday, and while she was a bit skittish and flaily getting her out to feed her she calmed down near instantly, ate (which I didn't expect since new reptiles usually go on hunger strike for awhile) and is now on my lap with no problem.

Tegus can be pretty comfy around people just in general, especially if they have had people around them right from the start. Not unusual at all.

Neato. Watch and be amazed at the unexpected ways your future gecko puts it to use. When i first started keeping geckos i would arrange tanks thinking, okay gecko will climb here and here and sleep over here and hide over here... Put gecko in and they use the spots i put zero thought in to the most and spots I thought they would use, they use the least.

Would a 30 gallon terrarium be alright for a California Kingsnake? At first I was gonna go for a 105 gallon one but my buddy told me that's pretty overkill. Haven't really had snakes, or reptiles for that matter, as pets before so I really want to make sure it has a good place to be.
>>
>>2108806

yes 30g should be fine. make sure the terrarium has a locking door/screen top. kings are adept escapists and will find weakness in the tank security if it exists.
>>

a 30 should be ok, unless you end up with a huge one thats like 6 feet long

mercury vapor bulbs last a bit longer than fluorescent uv tubes. general rule is to replace them after a maximum of 12 months use.

say hello to the crested geckos before heading to bed this evening. male is in frisky mood, right up against the front door, pawing at it because wants to be a spaz outside his tank for a bit. open door, let him climb on my arms for a couple minutes. play defense because he has a habit of jumping down to my leg then down to the floor then up the wall and on up to the ceiling. makes this barely audible little squeak he does when he climbs on me. cute. pees on me. not as cute. wanders back in to tank.

he does this because he can smell the female geckos on the other side of the room. ...at least he didn't ejaculate on me this time.

>>
>>2109241

no? They are sold everywhere and it's easy to distinguish between them and young clawed frogs
>>
>>2109232
Theres always risks with loose substrate. Get yourself some tile. It looks great and its easy to clean.
>>
>>2109232

Yes eco earth works well for gargs. I use a combination of eco earth and sphagnum moss in my tanks. If you're concered about your gecko accidentally eating substrate while hunting crickets, you can put a layer of leaf litter over top. Only one of my geckos actually likes bugs and for him i just feed phoenix worms from a bowl 2-3 times a month.
>>
>>2109361

No tile for tropical arboreal geckos. They need something that holds moisture to keep humidity high.

So, any thoughts on engaging your herp-friends mentally? I've always been worried my snakes were sort of just wasting away, living a cycle of being handled, laying in their tanks, eating, and shedding. You can't play with them like dogs or cats to sort of stimulate them, but I put my bigger king snake down in my hamper that has dozens of diamond shaped holes on the sides just big enough for his face to fit through and watched him try each hole to try and find a way out before he figured out to just climb out the top. Is there anything else in this vein that would challenge my snakes? Do you guys have any ways of engaging your herp-pals?

My baby bearded dragon is starting to shed

hes also moving a lot more in his tank

>>
>>2110082

reptiles don't need much in the way of enrichment. a new hide once in a while, paper towel rolls, small box with herp sized holes cut in it, pvc pipes, different piece of wood for climbing. it's important not to introduce too much change all at once though. meaning keep the wholesale tank redecoratings to a minimum. best to introduce one new thing every once in a while. once every other month is more than enough.
>>
How often do "virgin" female beardies become gravid?

Mine had been running around and refusing food recently, pooped everyday, and dropped a little weight for the past two weeks. Then she popped out 18 unfertilized eggs while I was away for work. >>
>>2107685
Tegus are some of the smartest reptiles, from what I remember. She may have quickly figured out that if you hadn't eaten her yet you weren't going to.
>>
>>2110617

>use tile or those rough desert mat things that exo terra sells for substrate. reptile carpet also okay. paper towel also okay.
>best feeder insects for leos are dubia roaches and superworms. if you feed crickets, remove uneaten ones ASAP as they will harrass your geckos
>use a thermostat
>put a moist hide in the tank
>leos love paper towel rolls (the cardboard inner part)
>they will also use reptile hammocks (mount fairly low to ground)
>if you have a table or a shelf or bookcase or something to put their tank a few feet above ground the geckos will appreciate it. they like being able to see the goings on in the room.

Leos like to climb, and while they are not experts at it like arboreals, you give them stuff to climb it will be thoroughly climbed.

If anyone has a monitor lizard don't go to varanus.net, Frank retes is an asshole cockmongler and if I knew how to hack the site would be dead!

Holy moly! I took that picture. Those are juvenile Komodo dragons at the Calgary zoo. Never seen one of my animal pics posted on 4chan before. This is a happy feel.

The junior dragons are doing well. They are now maybe 50% larger than when that pic was taken last year.

How do people just let their Cobras wander around, aren't they super temperamental?

They're both very simple to care for. Crested geckos need to be misted once a day, so just slightly more work there. Also need to set up your tank so it maintains the required 50%-80% humidity range (easy). On the plus side they don't really need to eat live bugs anymore thanks to protein rich diet mixes like Repashy Grubs and Fruit, and Pangea Fruit Mix with Insects. The only reason to put bugs in if using either of those two mixes now is just to amuse your gecko. Feed one of the aforementioned one feeding a week, and ordinary cgd the other two feedings. Also on plus side, if your home maintains a temperature somewhere in the low to mid 70's, they do not require heat source or lighting.

Kingsnakes and colubrids in general very easy maintenance. Change water bowl every 3-4 days, clean soiled substrate, frozen rodent once a week or so. They require some supplementary heat in the form of an under tank heater.

Better pet? I guess it depends on your preference for reptiles, but for your first herp I would go king snake. The reason i say that is that you will find king snakes to be more active during twilight hours and more willing to hang out in the open. They're also easier to hold than cresties. Cresties sleep all day and wake up around 7-8pm. Depending on the individual there can be a couple days a week that you will not see them at all. They can be shy. And they are very froggy when held. If you have no previous experience holding reptiles, cresties can be a bit of a uh... handful, to control without stressing them out and without having them hop away and climb up the wall and on to the ceiling. So i say king snek. Or any colubrid. Or ball python (fussy but easy). Or children's python or rosy boa. There are a lot of easy snakes.

Gecko sounded easier but I guess I will go with king snek, thanks anon.

One thing I find confusing though, what the heck kind of enclosure do I get? I am a aquarium hobbyist primarily and moving over to herps is so confusing, no one really seems to specify a one size for an enclosure, this is confusing me since I'm used to aquariums and fish having set sizes for habitats.

for an adult king you want something along the lines of a 30g breeder size. 36" x 18" H12"

If you get a baby, keep it in a smaller clear plastic bin around say 20" x 12" x whatever height. Large enclosures stress them as babies. It can be done by putting a ton of decor in to fill the space but eh, plastic bins are cheap anyway.
