Are birds difficult pets? I am interested but I don't want to mistreat it nor do I want a special snowflake bird.

I just want a feathery buddy who will sit on my shoulder and talk to me but I got a life too so it may alone sometimes plus I don't want to force a creature into a cage that can't stick it for long.

Does anyone have experience with owning African Greys?
I plan to get one after I graduate from college and get a job, but I've seen some people say that you shouldn't own one if you have a job, since they'll get neurotic and start feather plucking from loneliness.

Because out of all the medium to larger sized birds, they seemed to be the "easiest" to take care of.
I know that I definitely don't have enough time for a cockatoo, and I'm feeling that I wouldn't be able to provide enough time for a grey either. Are there any large/medium birds that are less prone to neurotic behavior? I'm not really looking for much, just a chill birb that I can put on my shoulder and take on walks like my cockatiel and conure.

If definitely recommend getting a third if you've got the space and time for them.

Three is more noise, more mess and more money than two. But it is so much fun watching them interact and have their own unique stupid quirks.
>>
How do you get budgies to bond with you? My birds aren't interested in treats and would rather play with each other than me
>>
I miss having a pet birb. You guys have such cute birbs.
>>
>>2102681
If you haven't already, I would really recommend reading the major parrot forums (avianavenue springs to mind). They have subforums for each kind of parrot.

From what I understand, the more intelligent the bird, the more neurotic it could be.
I've read that parent-raised chicks tend to be less neurotic as adults.
At least you already have experience with birbs!

How about Hahn's macaws?
I've heard male Eclectus parrots can be pretty chill, but they do have special dietary requirements. Also note I've not had experience with either, they just came to mind.
Another route would be looking for a sexually mature bird.

In honesty it does sound like you might not have the time for a larger parrot. Maybe some other birdfag can give you better advice.

I take my cockatiel out on a harness frequently and I generally get maybe 2-3 shits on me consistently.
My little birb tries her best to not poop on me so if I put her down every so often, she'll take a poop on the floor instead of me. Otherwise, she'll stick her butt out as far as she can from my shoulder to attempt a ground bombing but generally it just falls somewhere on my leg instead.

All birds will live for at least 15 years plus. Budgies with proper care can live up to 20 so do a lot of research into if having a bird will fit into your lifestyle. Need to spend an hour or more a day with them and make sure they're somewhere relatively stress free where they can make noise if they have to. I don't agree really with starter birds because I dont expect someone to buy and keep a budgies for 20 years if a caique is what you really desired.
As far as species though I usually recommend cockatiels , green cheek conure, quaker, and budgie. Foraging toys are very important and go a long way.
>>
>>2104079
That's a great name for a caique! Cute birb you have there.
>>
What should I do? My mom wants to give me a bird (the breed escapes me) but my housemate is a chain smoker. He's at home 99% of the time because he isn't getting much work right now. Because of the way the house is designed, you can't escape the cigarette smoke 100% even with the windows open/air purifier going on max/loads of white vinegar bowls laying around/etc. It gets REALLY bad sometimes. My bedroom is probably the best part of the house without cigarette smoke filling it up but you can still slightly smell it in there.

Due to the lack of space I have most of my things set up in the living room, but the smoke comes directly into here and there's nothing I can do about it. Of course the living room would be the best place to put the cage space-wise, and also because I'm out here when I'm not at work so she wouldn't be lonely, and there would be plenty of room for the bird to fly around. But I think I would have to put the cage in my bedroom because of the smoke. I'm just not sure how well that would work out, since she would be in there by herself while I'm at home and I wouldn't want to bring her out here. It's pretty cramped in my bedroom too, and if I were to let her out in there I don't think it would be too sanitary if she shat on my bed/pillows/clothing (I don't have anywhere to put them so they're laying out)/other belongings. If my mom actually gives me her old dresser I'm not sure if I would have enough space for a cage. Putting the cage almost directly about the heating vent would be a bad idea, correct?

I was just wondering if I should refuse the bird from her right now? You shouldn't have birds near cigarette smoke, right? Well, nothing should be, but due to reasons I can't move until around this time next year. Would I be able to get something to work with my current situation?
>>
>>2105278
Just make your roommate smoke outside, problem solved :)
>>
>>2105280
He owns the house, I don't think I'd be able to convince him to do that.
>>
>>2105282
It's really shitty for everyone if there's smoking going on inside a house. Everything stinks and it yellows the ceilings, which would be a bitch to clean. If he was a decent human being he would smoke outside
>>
>>2105282
Birds are more sensitive to air pollution than most animals IIRC so I guess for now it would be best to not get the bird.

I actually wouldn't be too concerned about if she pooped on your clothes or whatever, it happens to me all the time and I just throw it into the wash.
>>
>>2105286
It really is. Thankfully he mostly just stays down in the basement most of the time unless he comes up to get food/booze but good god, even then it's really awful. Even old clothes that haven't left my bedroom for a while stink of cigarette smoke. I'm gonna feel really bad for the people who buy this house when this guy dies in probably 5-10 years from some lung disease. They're going to be scrubbing the walls/ceiling down there for the rest of their lives.

>>2105287
I see, thank you so much.
>>
>>2105287
Forgot to ask, so it still wouldn't be too good if the bird was in my bedroom then? I'm assuming not but I just want to confirm.
>>
>>2105294
I think the bedroom might be alright, perhaps you could crack open the windows to let in fresh air? I'm not really an expert or anything when it comes to secondhand smoke on birds.
>>
>>2105299
That might work. I'm in Canada so leaving the window open during the colder months probably wouldn't be too good, so it'd be best if I got a second air purifier to put in the bedroom right?

I'm just worried about the smoke that travels up and leaves through the vent. It's right next to the window so there's that, but when the heat is on you can definitely smell it. The cage would probably be right next to the vent depending on whether I get that dresser or not. I can't tell if I'm being too paranoid about this, but I just don't want her to suffer if I can avoid it.
>>
>>2105327 here
Any extra opinions? I'm still not sure whether this is all an okay thing to do or not.
>>
>>2105278

got our bird from my sisters bfs parents who chain smoked in the house. within an hour of the bird being at their house, it was coughing and got really sick, seems they are super fucking sensative to smoke. If i were you, i wouldnt take the bird.
Our bird is fine now btw, my sister brought him over to us the next day and he recovered quickly.
>>
>>2105437
Poor little thing. I'll hold off on getting the bird for now then. Thank you so much.
>>
>>2103041
If you got them at the same time, it's hard to get paired parakeets to do so, but not impossible.

Only thing I can suggest is talking to them regularly and eat with them, so they don't see you as a threat, but rather part of their flock. (I know it sounds silly)

Try associating some words with actions, making sure you use the same tone of voice. If you're opening their cage, say 'open', turning off the lights for the night, tell them 'goodnight'..and so on. If you can do so around the same time of day, that's a bonus.

Slowly start with teaching to step up using a perch and replacing it with your finger once they get the hang of it.

This. I'm regretting not waiting to find a local breeder that sells cockatiels, because one of the birds we bought from the pet store is psycho. The male is okay and pretty calm, but the female doesn't like being on your finger and you cant get close to her at all.
>>

Suggesting a cockatiel, since they're smallish, cute and pretty quiet if you can give them the attention they need.
>>
I am so upset right now, I brought my birb along to visit a good friend of mine, and was letting birb fly around happily as per usual when we visit the place.

She landed on my friend's roommate, and her boyfriend just grabbed my birb and threw her away and she hit the wall. Four of her feathers (not flight) got ripped out too. Fucking retards, do they think that throwing a weak animal against the wall to "protect" their gfs makes them manly or something?

My poor child seems ok but I know how birds pretend they are fine and I feel like I'm going to throw up.
>>

>>
>>2106327
What the fuck, anon. I am furious for you right now. No blood feathers got fucked with, right?

What kind of bird is it? Goddamnit I am so angry for you.

Once my caique flew into a wall pretty hard (a crow suddenly landed on the balcony, scared the shit out of me too actually), and I know the feeling of wanting to throw up. That sound.

I felt her all over, watched for signs of 'stargazing', put her in a covered cage for a few minutes, but she was instantly chirping happily again.
>>
>>2106327
I feel very sorry for your bird but you are also at fault. Please don't let them fly around a different room before telling all people that it is safe if the bird lands on them.
>>
Has anyone experienced falconry? I'm not a big fan of keeping birbs, but I would like to raise an American Kestrel. When I go to the rural parts of town, I'll see them on the power lines and I've even noticed that some are in their own territories. I always thought they were cute little buggers, and very colorful. I'd also use him to get rid of a couple starlings and house sparrows in my neighborhood.

>>2106327
That's a real shithead of a human. I would get help because that sounds a lot like animal abuse and something in the lines of attempting to destroy personal property. I'm not familiar with the law, but I feel you can press charges on him.
>>
>>2106378
No blood feathers were hurt, which is lucky since she's in the middle of molting right now. She's a cockatiel and is back to randomly chirping off key so she seems alright. She was really shocked for a while though and wouldn't make a peep until we went back home.

>>2106379
I visit my friend at least twice a week and my bird has flown around many, many times near my friend's roommate in full view of the boyfriend. I don't know what prompted him yesterday to decide to throw her against the wall, perhaps it was because he felt she was "intruding" on the two of them, who were cuddling.

>>2106380
I don't think I have much of a case unless my bird was actually injured; also, it is their apartment so technically, my bird intruded in their space.

Well, the two of them aren't that great people in the first place, the girl is an IRL redpiller who thinks that men can't be raped and women deserve getting raped, and the guy makes disturbing comments about my animals as jokes.

he is rubbing his wings on something to stimulate a sex response. those triangle tunnel sleeping hammocks can cause it. anything really. its not bad.

if you want the bird to stop it you have to stop petting it on the back and remove anything soft it can rub its side against. over time it will become a less sexual bird.

hello /an/ first time here, where can I get a bird trained to do pic related?
>>
So we got a cockatiel about 2 months ago and are having trouble getting her to step up. First time bird owners. My gf is the one who is working with her and she will put one foot on her finger for a second to reach the millet but won't get on her finger. We've been trying for like two weeks and no progress. She gets sassy once in s while and we read you weren't supposed to pull your finger away to not teach them biting works but also to stop if the bite so they don't think they get a treat for biting. It's very confusing
>>
>>2109432

Fuck what is with tiels and self harm? Mine tries constantly to put himself in the microwave, the oven, the grill, the toaster and on the top of the cooker when its all hot. I chase him off, dont let him have a chance to land so he can get burnt of hurt but wtf, doesnt he feel the heat? He gets so pissed off that i dont let him burn too, he attacks me and makes angry squawks. I love him but he is such a bird brain sometimes. I try to have him in the cage when im cooking, but he doesnt always want to go in.

Someone would just grab your bird and smash it, then sue your ass for assault

Would it be okay to get a parrot if im out 6 hours a day for school or is that still too much for a parrot to handle?

I had the green one for eight years, the grey one for seven, and three for the blue one.
Over these years I had foru females all of them died of cancer except for the last one which the vet suspects she sufferded from circovirus and only lived for 7 months.

Am I doing something wrong or are female budgies that prone to tumors?

I got a conure off craiglist for free living in an apartment. I had a loft and the bird often flew in the open area between levels. youll want to cover the area where the bird is with a tarp or plastic tablecloth. you also have to keep a lookout for any wood chewing the bird does and cover it if you want your deposit back. my bird liked to chew window sills and the trim above the doors and windows. For the sills, I put down sandpaper with double sided tape. for the trim i cut a fence post 2x1 at a severe angle with table saw and taped it with double sided tape so the bird couldnt land up there.
many leases do not consider birds as pets.
if the bird is loud your neighbors may complain. get a corner loft apartment to mitigate this. corner means only 1 wall is shared with a neighbor and loft means top floor, no neighbors above you.
>>
>>2117218
Didn't elaborate enough, but I'm planning on moving into a duplex or townhouse, but I don't know when it would be happening (At least a month).
Also I saw an SI Eclectus in a similar situation, now I'm really tempted, fuck I need to get this housing taken care of

Unplanned cockatiel owner here, long story short found him either lost or abandoned, checked with the neighbors and none of them owned him. Got seeds and cage from one of the neighbors who owns other birds. Nobody has come looking for him either.

So I guess I'll have to take care of him for now, maybe find a new better owner for him eventually since I've never owned birds before and don't know much about it, or just learn my shit and keep him as my pet. What are the basics I should know?

I watched some videos on taming them but I can't get this little guy to step up, he keeps pecking my fingers instead no matter what I do. The cockatiels in the videos are much better well behaved, even when the video maker claims they are untame. Is he scared because he got lost or something?

Fucking tell him not to smoke in the house, its disgusting. My own smoke disgusts me, if he has to spend 90% of his time outside in the freezing rain so be it. Its harmful to you, and will ruin the house. That shit seeps in to everything, the smell will linger forever and the nicotine will stain walls and furniture that nasty yellow colour. Definately don't bring any animal in to that environment, cigarette smoke is really nasty stuff.

Ok, so random question to anons with more experience than I
There's 2 birds up on Craigslist that are looking for homes, an Eclectus Parrot (Male, almost 2 years old) and an African Gray (Male, somewhere between 2 and 4)
I was really wanting to get an Eclectus in the future, but an African Gray would probably be my second choice and frankly might be better to start as they seem easier to handle/more stable.

If I were to see about getting the African Gray soon, would it be too crazy of an idea to get an Eclectus in the future as well and reasonably expect them to play nice?

Disclaimer: I've never had a bird before, nor have I had any significant interactions with pet birds (Small town, closest pet store with birds is easily 90 miles away)

neither
>>
>>2118847
Any elaboration as to why?
>>
>>2118572
Neither.

An african grey is a life long relation.

Get a cockatiel first.

Then you'll be able to imagine what hell a true parrot is.
>>
>>2118847
>>2119168
So it sounds like I should start with something smaller and easier to care for before getting a parrot, no?
Does a green cheek conure fit that bill? I ask because there's also one on CL looking for a new home, and I'd feel better giving a home to one in need than going out and buying one from a pet store (Not to mention the closest one with birds is ~90 miles away, and I work 7 days a week)

Granted I do work a lot, but all my time outside of work is pretty open (Terminally single), and if I had a bird that was decently behaved I don't have a doubt they could hang out with me at work all day, since I work in an office as an engineering tech.
>>
>>2119187
Green conure is more accurate to your level.

But taking care of a bird that you plan on being his only comrade/playmate is gonna take time no matter the race.

However a connure is already way easier/cheaper than a true big ass parrot.

However you say he already had an home, do you know if they trained/occupied him or if he was left alone most of the time.

An already adult and antisocial bird may not be the best partner.
It's not impossible to tame one but it's going to take more time for sure.

Not really topic related but still close enough.

A bird flew into my window and crashed onto my balcony, first it lay on its back opening and closing its beak and then it stopped moving completely still on its back. I placed it in a shoe carton with some paper to keep it from the wind and to let it be able to somewhat keep warm if it's still alive. I tried feeling heartbeats and breaths when I picked it up but couldn't feel any, don't know if it's because they're too subtle and me too insensitive or if it's just dead. Any advice on checking for life signs on small birds?

When checking on it later I noticed that a brown liquid is coming out of one of its nostrils, looks like poowater but it's probably blood mixed with something. Been thinking about letting it lie there for an hour or so and if it's still inanimate take it into the woods and let nature run its course.
>>
>>2119265
Disregard this, just checked it again and rigor mortis has set in.
>>
>>2119187

green cheeks are great pets, and they don't have a lot of the issues larger birds have, so if that's an option definitely go for that
>>

For the African Gray, this is straight from the post
"Semi tame. $350 and will include small basic parrot cage for free or I have a bigger cage as seen in photo for $150

no lowballers
Male African grey
Approx age is 2-4 years old but I cannot verify this. No tags no paperwork.

He is very quiet. Doesn't squawk. Whistles beautiful tunes in perfect pitch. Doesn't talk but he tries to. Very easy parrot to own. He is no hassle at all. Very low maintenance.

He has no plucked feathers. Absolutely no known health issues. In perfect condition.

Owned him for approx 13 months.

When I got him we spent some time with him making him more social. We can hand feed him and used to be able to pet him but lately I work away a lot and spend no time with him anymore.
If you buy him be prepared to be patient and give him some time to adjust. "

The conure's post (No pic):
"I need to rehome Gypsy. She/He is a 3 year old Green Cheek Conure. No DNA testing has been done to prove sex. She is very tame and loves music. We have started traveling to much to give her the attention she needs. I prefer to rehome her to someone who has bird experience. She will come with one of her 2 cages, a 2ft. x2ft, x 6ft tall cage or the parrot starter cage purchased at Petsmart when she was purchased. Also all food, treats and toy making supplies I have collected. I will text pics upon request. Feel free to text me with any questions."

my green cheek's name is gypsy too (pic related) wonder if they named theirs after gypsy rose lee too...

honestly, you should go with the green cheek, they're really good companions, mine is well behaved enough that she can go outside with me and to stores and people have actually asked me if she was fake (she just chills on my shoulder and looks around purring, she just can't go outside with my bro's dog cuz that dog jumps at people and when she sees the dog do it she does it too), extremely affectionate, and really easy to deal with as long as you can give them attention (which is as simple as playing with them, mine rolls onto her back and makes this laughing noise while she kicks her feet at me and wrestles my hand... or letting them sit with you while you do whatever) cuz that's literally all they want, and usually just from everyone... mine climbed onto her vet's shoulder to preen herself and the vet after a check up, and will hop right onto people's shoulders when they visit whether or not she's met them before

african greys are usually more prone to issues, and a lot of them are one person birds which makes things like having a bird you could take with you to work or even just out hard, and can even affect you having company over (having to put the bird away, having to worry about whether or not you should let people over cuz you work and it needs a lot of time so if it doesn't like new people it'd be unfair to cage it frequently for that purpose etc) the only person i've known with an african grey was my s/o's aunt, and it only liked her bit everyone else...

idk much about eclectus parrots but i do know that larger birds tend to have more issues, and i do know that they aren't generally as affectionate or friendly as green cheeks are
>>
>>2119403
That sounds nice. When you take your bird out, how do you keep her from flying off/into trouble? (Clipped wings, flight harness, just well-behaved, etc)
>>
>>2119403

+ the only thing that would bother me about the green cheek listing is the lack of pics, but if you're considering it you could ask

also if these people care about the home the bird is going to i imagine you could probably arrange to meet the birds and see how you feel about each one... i'd never rehome my birds personally (i'd rather burn the world down), but i imagine if i was gonna i'd want to meet the person and have them interact with my bird before letting them take it anywhere... so asking to meet it and interact with it before agreeing to anything is probably a reasonable request
>>
>>2119411
Oh yes by all means I plan to visit with the owner + bird before pulling the trigger on anything, just wanted to formulate a plan first

she has a harness, her wings are currently clipped but that's mostly cuz i used to rely on them when i'd garden... she was fully flighted during the fall/winter (she's only a year old) cuz i didn't see a point in clipping them for her to stay inside + her vet made me a little paranoid about just relying on the harness during her check up (she was fully flighted at the time)

i realized i couldn't just rely on clipped wings when she decided to fuck with me for an hour playing in treetops after getting mad that i asked her to step up... she flew around flock calling me, waited 'til i was right in front of her and then would take off again and repeat (she would do this on the stairs, a painting's frame, curtain rods and door frames inside as a game) 'til she got bored jumped onto my shoulder, cuddled into my neck and let me walk her home... it only happened once out of hundreds of times, but there are hawks here and it just isn't worth the risk so it doesn't happen anymore... i trust her to not disappear and to come home with me, but i clearly can't trust her to not draw tons of attention to herself from animals i have no control over, and birds can definitely fly better than you think with clipped wings... she can still do loops and get across rooms indoors so outside where she can pick up the wind well... if that time hadn't been completely fucking horrifying it would've been kinda just amazing how well she flew and the distance she could cross etc

so just based on my experience i'd say invest in an aviator harness, it's like 30 bucks you can find it online easy... she has a flightsuit as well, but those only work as diapers the leashes on them are pure shit and literally all they do is look uncomfortable and upset her so the leash part of her flight suit is essentially just garbage

pic is her on a hike, chilling on my s/o's shoulder you can see her harness a bit (the red thing)
>>
>>2119413

yeah, honestly i wouldn't really trust getting a bird from anyone who won't allow you a visit first, but from what it sounds like a green cheek is more the kinda bird you're looking for
>>
>>2119423
>>2119424
Welp it seems the guy forgot to delete his post, as Gypsy found a new home a week ago
>>
>>2119470

that's too bad, you should really consider waiting to see if another small conure shows up at some point and maybe do a little more research to be sure of what kinda bird fits what you want... i personally don't like them, but cockatiels are good first birds (i think they're boring) and budgies are actually really underrated and can be great pets too

My brother and I have two budgies for several years and they have a seed only diet. We try to get them to have more greens in their diet but the two shits refuse to eat anything that's not a dry seed, preferable if it comes from the pet store.

Any tips on helping them have a bit more of a varied diet instead of just seeds?
>>
most recent birb
>>
>>2122718
how about chopping up greens and sprinkling seeds in mixture
>>
>>2122763
we've tried it a few times with some chopped fruits and veggies. They will either ignore it all together, or meticulously pick off the seeds and leave the rest.
>>
>>2122764

you have to give them the food every day, and leave it available all day... you just have to be consistent (and keep it fresh for their safety), and not give up... also hanging food up like it's a toy will encourage them to taste it while they play with it and get them eating new stuff, so will eating food in front of them and then offering them some... as long as you keep trying they'll eventually start eating it

i had a budgie that was really picky at first, and eventually she was happily eating all kinds of food, and even trying new things the first time she encountered them... and i just did the shit i mentioned every day...

also once you see them trying new food take note of their preferences and then slowly take away the seed 'til it's an extremely small portion of what they eat... you should also consider switching to pellets if they're extremely resistant to a more varied diet so they're at least getting their needs met (i don't use pellets personally cuz my birds eat what's in them every day in fresh food form - soy which i've heard a lot of really mixed shit about... so it seems pointless)
>>
>>2122772

+ btw when i say make it available all day i mean switching it out every few hours for fresh food... you'll waste a lot at first (i throw leftovers in my garden... compost and i've made chipmunk friends and a lot of wild birds will visit), but it'll be worth it
>>

wut. THey were outside, and something pulled the chickens through the cage? That's fucked up..

Raccoon probably. Coons and their grabby little hands just love to pull little chicks through the wire cage. They'll rip them up to get them through. Need finer mesh. Fine enough that coons can fit their hands through.

My cockatiel has recently started raping the drapes over my window several times a day. Never displayed such behaviour before. Should I be concerned or is it a spring time hormonal thing?

Does anyone have experience with lovebirds?
Mine is a hand-fed female (she laid eggs last year) and whenever she's out of her cage she always seem to be looking for a nest. When she finds something she can hide in (say, a box or even a plastic bag) she gets extremely territorial and often bites if you try to get close to her.
Any way I can discourage this behaviour, apart from hiding all possible "nest" objects?

Also is it true that male lovebirds are more chill than females? Mine sure is quite neurotic.

My bird will do this thing with my fingers where kind of nibbles them but not really, it's like she's eating invisible breadcrumbs off my hands. Is she trying to preen me?

>have lovebird
>change water
>bites me
>touch food tray
>bites me
I read article that grasping the beak and saying no biting helps but fuck that when she is territorial. Lucky mines claimed the cage as its territory so just hitting the cage and touching her tray makes her go back in. I think mines is female based on her behavior and they are more aggressive than males.

Not a lovebird, but I just went through hormonal hell with my caique. This was her worst one yet.

Things that helped:
>making sure they get 12 hours sleep in a DARK covered cage
>never feeding warm soft food; let it cool first
>never letting them 'kiss' you around your mouth area (not a good idea anyway, humans have bad shit in their saliva)
>if they regurgitate for you, ignore it and don't encourage it.
>if you have one, remove their sleeping tent for now

Hope this helped a bit. Good luck anon.

>regurgitate
Mainly on male lovebirds.

He might be still scared from escaping and then you taking him in. Just leave him alone for maybe a couple of days so he can get used to you and his new home.

I have 3 cats now (and have had a few others over the birds life span) and a bird that is freely let outside his cage, and they have never harmed him once. They will go and hang out with him and stuff too, once, one of the kitties was sleeping inside his cage with him.
All of the cats were raised as kittens with the bird though, so maybe they kind of recognize him as family? I'm not sure what would happen if I adopted an adult cat right now.

I have a cat and a bird, but when I put my bird near my cat (I will hold birb very securely), I have seen my cat try to paw/claw at the birb. So I don't let them go near each other.
