Their paying me 10 an hour, under the table. It's not much, but I really love this store and it's going to be a lot of fun working with them. And it's not that they are incompetent, they have all breed clownfish at some point and all actively keep at least a frag tank. I suspect their betta tank is tainted by the previous owner, who dropped it off. Then other customers dropped off their unwanted Berta's.

Just biofilm. Naturally given off by plants, algae, and even fish in your tank. Increase surface agitation or equip a surface skimming filter and it'll go away, if it bothers you. Otherwise it doesn't really hurt.

Hardscape, micro sword, stem plants. The sponge filter kills the whole iwagumi thing anyway so put some background plants in that bitch. H. Corymbosa grows like a fucking weed and gets bushy, or you could bunch a bunch of rotala or najas in front of them.

Danios will eat 100% of their offspring in an aquarium every time.
They may very well be breeding every day in your tank without you even noticing.
All I did was feed them live food for a few weeks and then moved a few to a 10 gallon with a bunch of Java moss for a few days before catching them and putting them back.
They're probably one of the easiest fish to breed besides mollies etc. the Java moss really helps the fry survive the first several days but you can breed them in an empty tank (which that tank now is).

I think it's because in real life the tank is much larger than it is in a picture, so all the little details and individual views that we enjoy are kinda crammed together into one pile of tank in the picture.
I like to try for shots of individual fish or small parts of the tank that are interesting to look at.

I have two african clawed frogs in one tank, and several mollies in another. The mollies are breeding like crazy, and I'm thinking this would be an easy food source for my frogs. I have red that certain fish such as ruby red minnows can cause the frogs problems while digesting them. Just trying to confirm that a Molly is not one of these fish, and make sure I don't harm my frogs in any way.
If this is better suited for amphibian general I will take it there.

according to Wikipedia the problem is that goldfish and rosy red minnows contain thiaminase that can cause a vitamin B imbalance if that's all you feed for long periods of time.
The article doesn't mention any other types of fish, so presumably those are the only feeders that can become a problem.
Feeding goldfish or r.r. minnows should be fine though as long as you also feed other foods, or if you're dosing vitamins.
either way, I'd guess mollies are fine. Even then you probably want some other foods to mix it up a bit.

Thank you. I feed them mysis shrimp a few times a week and occasionally throw in some floating pellets. There are a few guppies(and now mollies) that are sharing the tank with the frogs. Frogs definitely don't pig out on the fish, but they disappear at a fairly steady rate. Appreciate the response!

Like >>2097696 said, the problem is thiaminase. Thiaminase destroys thiamin (vitamin B) and will cause a deficiency if eaten regularly. It's rather difficult to counterbalance the effect. Mollies are considered safe, though, so you're fine there. If you want to feed minnows or goldfish as a treat once a week or so, that's not enough to cause problems.

I think you'll like the rotala. Even in low light with no CO2 mine would at least look decent. If you get a better light or CO2 it's one of the most beautiful plants around imo.
One observation: it seems prone to potassium deficiencies, evidenced by tiny holes in all the leaves. You might end up needing to supplement that.

It's better to pick an ecotope and use only fish and plants from that environment. You've got a lot of Asian stuff but there's also African stuff in there and just way too many plants in general. Good planted tanks tend to focus on just a small handful of plants. For a South American ecotope that might be a variety of swords and cabomba and eridea

Most reefkeepers used to keep planted tanks. Many still do.
If you want to know which one is actually more difficult, try them both. I'm not knocking planted tanks here, they often ARE extremely difficult to keep.
Reefs are just a whole different level. The sheer amount of equipment required should be some clue.

Acclimation usually isn't necessary in that type of situation, especially if it was only in your bag for an hour or two. The slight pH/temperature shock the fish might go through is usually less of a risk than leaving it in a bag with ammonia creeping up.

If you notice when you look at aquascapes the light is very bright, but there's still a large contrast between the light and dark parts.

Expensive lights seem to have light the travels more directly and doesn't bounce all around the tank flooding everything with light.
The light that hits the leaves is very bright but after it hits the leaves it's very shady behind them

Blue rams are always considered generally peaceful. The only thing I've ever heard of one attacking was a Betta when someone put the two in a 10 gallon tank.

I had some eyespot rasboras for a while that I liked, but they kept jumping out of the tank so I gave up on them. Neon, green neon, cardinal, and glowlight tetras will also have that effect.

Some of it has to do with the glare of the bulbs and the quality of the reflector or lens. Better reflectors and lenses disperse light more evenly, and higher quality bulbs glare less.
A great deal of it is also the camera. HDR photography goes a long way in evening out light levels.

I didn't realize you had both. You could run it off of either, but most of those styles of filters are designed to run off of air pumps. air-powered filters are still very effective and do a great job of keeping the tank stable and clean.

So do to me getting a new job at a LFS, I will be diving into a 5,000 gallon shark tank at the end of may. The tank includes 3 foot black tip sharks, coral banded sharks, and a large bat ray.
Does anyone have any experience with doing something like this? I think vayeate may, but is there anyone else? The more I think about it, the more real it gets. And the more I don't want either.

I'm not to worried about something bad happening... as far as I've been told by the people at the shop, the sharks are pretty docile. The hardest thing it seems, is not stepping on the sting ray, since it loves to bury itself in the sand. Suggestions?

Fake plants provide fish with cover and create shaded areas for them. Live plants provide additional benefits like oxygenating the water and removing nitrogen. Fake plants certainly aren't "bad," unless you're talking about sharp plastic and fish with large, delicate fins like bettas.
I'd never use fake plants in my own tanks, but seriously, anyone who would give you shit for using them is just an asshole and not worth listening to.
