I know this is a controversial thing to say here, mostly due to the whole "let nature take its course" meme, but I'll go ahead and say it anyway:

If I saw this in real life, I would save the frog everytime. Sure, the plant needs subsistence, but as an animal, I have more in common with the frog than the plant. Since I'm also an animal with the ability to feel empathy, it comes natural to me to save other animals in need.

This being said, I'm pretty sure the recording is from a live feeding in a closed environment.

Don't worry, it's not cool to be cruel. It's just a shithead millennial male meme. They'll all be dead from their own stupidity in a few decades anyway. There is absolutely nothing right with the naturalistic fallacy. Never forget that. If anyone ever tries to give you the reason "Well nature, therefore..." just stop them and remind them they're a fucking idiot and ignore anything else they ever have to say on any matter, because they clearly can't into ethics or basic logic so their opinion is worth exactly one day-old shit.

It's not fucking cruel shithead. If I were being cruel, I'd purposefully go and catch a frog to feed the trap. If that frog stumbled into a trap all on its own, sucks to suck now don't it?
>>
>>2095898
No they're not, stupid. Pain requires neurons. You're just another edgy little kid trying to feed intelligent creatures to plants and use "muh nature!" as an excuse. And opening or pruning one leaf on a flytrap does a lot less damage to the plant than getting eaten does to the frog. Most traps don't require feeding in captivity anyway.

>>2095903
Of course it is. You're just a little edgy cunt. Claiming muh nature doesn't make something not cruel.

>If I were being cruel, I'd purposefully go and catch a frog to feed the trap.
I'm pretty sure that's what we're looking at.

My house is normallyaround 79-81 throughout spring and summer and around 77 during the fall. Winter can drop to around mid sixties to low seventies, with little difference between day and night year-round. I dont think thats a big enough difference for them though.

My house stays cooler than yours, but the location of the plants has more temperature variation than you describe, and even still I have the same problem.

Generally buy a couple small phalaenopsis in February each year, stay in bloom for 2-3 mo and then never bloom again. It's so frustrating because the plants are clearly healthy with thick vibrant foliage, but just refuse to flower again
>>
>>2095985
Pretty much. I have like 5 phals right now at my parent's house, and none of them have flowered since I bought them. They're healthy too, based on the pics that my mom or brother or dad send me occassionally. Frustrating as hell

>>2096012
I love that too, also, the "live cyle" of Amorpophallus and related Genera is absolutely fascinating, the way they trap their pollinators is also absolutely amazing.

Also, the phase after the "flowering phase" is quite beautiful. What looks like a small tree, is in reality one single leaf.

Absolutely great plants.

One more thing:
If you can grow Calla lillies, you might want to try T. venosum too, there are easy to grow, as long as you don´t drown them or let them dry out during their growth period (After the flowering phase)
>>

What are good starter, low allergy plants? I kill almost everything. I already know pothos is unkillable, but what else?
>>
>>2096063
Easy to grow?
Something like Chlorophytum would be a good idea. If you want indoors, which I'm guessing you do, you could also go a little bit more exotic and get like a Nepenthes x ventrata from a home depot or a lowes
>>
>>2096080
Nepenthes are not a starter plant, anon.
>>
>>2096062
Where are you from?
Also, I would say it would be better to get them from a fellow Hobbyist.

But don´t forget the downside of Voodoo lillies... the smell
>>
>>2096086
Well most aren't but the hybrid >>2096080 this guy mentions, ventrata, is pretty hardy. Just need slightly purer water than most houseplants tolerate and that's about it
>>
>>2096090
Califagnia. I don't know if I would even want to though, because of the debilitating smell. Can they tolerate extreme sun?
>>
>>2096098
Yes, and you can't use the usual soil most plants use, fertilizer kills it, it takes like 4 months to adapt to a new place and produce pitchers, also it needs a bit of sunlight but not too much and a bit of moisture too or it won't produce any pitchers.
>>
>>2096109
hahaha not Ventrata. Usually a four month acclimation period is only something you'd find from like a rafflesiana or maybe a bical. Ventratas are quick to adapt, you can use foliar fertilizer and as long as you don't dry the thing out or keep it soaked, it'll be just fine. Common sense kind of things. It also doesn't need a ton of sunlight, usually a west or a south windowsill is plenty
>>
>>2096100
sorry, I don´t know where to get some in Cali
Well, I wouldn´t put them in full sun, a few hours in the morning or evenening are ok though.

The good thing is, they only stink for a few days.
You can keep them indoors, if you spray them with water
That way, they don´t smell as bad

If you don´t spray them, you might as well drop a dead deer in your living room and dump a few turds on it.
That´s about the way they smell (yes, they smell THAT intense)

But as I said before, you can just place them outside while they bloom. Just don´t put them Into full sun all day, a few hours direct sunlight doesn´t harm them at all in my experience.

They are perennial, look up the ones best suited for your climate, but most should probably do good. Takes about a year or two to start producing if you get a baby transplant. Check out your nurseries and such.

Also asparagus is perennial and strawberries to an extent.

Does anyone know any plants that would do good in a vivarium? Specifically with my hissing cockroaches? Im trying to turn pic related into more of a self contained and permanent environment. Relative humidity is 70-80%. Im thinking of adding some green anoles evauntually and getting corkwood for the background so i can graft airplants and such. Also im going to get a false bottom and proper soil for the plants to grow in (currently everythings mostly in pots)

Right now i have a croton, wandering jew, pothos, some kind of lily and a bromelid.

Looking for things that will stay under about 12 inches. Also what would be an appropriate light to use. I was gifted this aquarium by my brother and the default light that came with it is a t8 flouresecent bulb. Some of the plants look like theyre growing but the wandering jew looks kinda leggy. Any thoughts?

i live in northern cali and i had a voodoo lily planted in my backyard. It got morning light and did pretty good, got a little bit burnt but still looked nice. I think its just because it flowered right around the time summer was getting hot.

I got mine from a local nursery as a bulb, if you live by a nursery called "green acres" they should have a healthy bulb for sale. I planted mine next to the neighbors i hated, and no joke these flowers smell like dead body. I like to think its still there without anyone realizing where the smell comes from.

Saucer magnolia should be easy to find, but I don't have any. Where are you? With those trees, you could be anywhere on the east coast.

I have:
Ironwood
Beech
Chestnut Oak
Deodar Cedar
Japanese Maple
Camelia
Southern Magnolia
Live Oak
...Florida Torreya...

That's all I can remember right now.

One rule about magnolia: Don't dry them.

Just go straight from the pod to the dirt. Mine came up 90 percent this year. Oaks and magnolias are very sensitive to drying.

Sorry for late response, I'm in southeastern In, temperate zone 6a I believe.
I won't be planting anything until fall, and right now I'm focusing mainly on ornamentals.
I have fruit trees that produce, but they are quite old. I've considered planting some slow growing hardwoods close to these fruit trees, but nothing is set in stone yet.
Thank you.

>>
>>2100210
Replace them. Originally I thought about planting slow growing hardwoods close to my apples and peach trees. The other trees I mentioned are going elsewhere on the property.
I believe my larger, older fruit trees are 25 years old, and still producing. I was under the impression I could plant a hardwood that ten years from now not be very big, and if the fruit trees are still going good, I could transplant.
You would know more about it than me, care to share your thoughts?

Get some daylight grade CFL bulbs, and then some clip on desk lamps. Make sure the inside of the lamps are metal and as reflective as possible.

So, it depends on the species, but, in general, transplanting a tree that old would have a pretty low success rate and cost a lot of money.

Nah man. I would be transplanting the 5-10 year old hardwood, not the established fruit tree. This is only if the fruit tree is still producing, and the hardwood is 10' or less.
Basically I'm thinking my old fruit trees may not be worth a fuck in ten years, I just want to have something else started before I cut them down. However if the fruit trees are still going good, then I can transplant the hardwood somewhere else. Sorry for the mix up.

Yes. I used them to grow smaller nepenthes, or juvenile ones with good results, right up until they got too big. Im actually working on this myself right now. Look up vivariums, basically planted aquariums in which you can decide if you want pets in it or not.

Im ordering soil right now along with isopods and springtails, they help clean and cycle nutrients in the tank. Also you probably want a false bottom to help give you get an idea of how much water it needs and help the soil breathe.

I'm a bonsaifag. Put the Japanese Maple outside. Otherwise it will die. It's too dark inside. Keep it outside in winter too, it needs dormancy.
If you're gonna wire it, put some bends into it. That's why you wire bonsai. At this point there's no real point to wiring yet though, it's too young. Give it a couple of years outside and it'll be something really damn nice though.

Hey,

So I'm decently new at keeping plants. I've had succulents and beginner stuff before I've kept and grown well, but now I have a money tree that keeps drooping. I don't know why. It has African Violet soil and I water it whenever the soil starts to get dry and it is in an east facing window. It grows a lot of new branches, but they droop a little instead of fan out. Not my pic but it looks similar to this.

>>

it needs a bigger pot. id also suggest feeding it something. you can mix some used coffee grounds into the soil of the new pot, it will act as a time-release food source for the plant. if you happen to have a fish tank, give water from it to your plants. and obviously theres plenty of stuff you can buy too, but im cheap.

I am so sick of these goddamn things. They are a constant pest on my cat palm. I get rid of them completely but then they come back in a month. I take my entire plant outside and completely cover every inch of it with alcohol/hydrogen peroxide + soap water solution using a rag and check it every single day for a few weeks, every inch of the plant and dab away any remaining bugs. But as soon as I'm sure they're gone, they come back in a matter of weeks. I am angry. :(

Has anyone successfully gotten completely rid of these things? Do I have to trash my plant? I've been battling them for 6 months, since a little after I bought the plant.
>>
>>2104887
Remove all potting soil and spray the plant's roots with a hose and also the plant itself. You're removing all the pests on the leaves, but you're not stopping the actual problem as mealybugs live usually in the roots. Post results. Happy growing!

So my S. Flava got attacked by a fungus, I removed the affected part and kept treating it with fungicide, but the fungus kept developing (slower, that's it) so I had to remove another part...
What should I do? Separate all the plants divisions and change the substrate or see if the remaining parts are healthy?
>>
>>2105248
My Sarracenia purpurea had the same "illness" it died.

If I were you, I would just trow away the affected plant
I don't think, that it spreads trough the substrate, because the other sarracenias, which were also in the same "tub", did not get the fungus.

Also, why are all your Sarracenias (the ones shown in the thread) so big already?
Mine are just starting to grow their "flower" and do not yet have pitchers, only their "winter leaves".

well...maybe it's because spring was really cold until now.. hopefully it gets warmer soon
