My dog found this guy walking around in my garage but then it curled into a donut. So i picked it up and put it in a box and its still a donut.

It's a wooly bear caterpillar. Some of them can have mildly irritating hair, so don't let your dog play with it.

Yeah my dog just sniffed it and I picked it up. So I guess these guys like leafs? I'm gonna have to look around some because everything around me is dormant
I kept one as a pet once when I found it in my house in the dead of winter. Fed it lettuce, it did pretty well. Turned into a big orange tiger moth.

Unbelievable. I'll feed it lettuce but it gets nothing more.
We have caterpillars like that here, only they have orangeish stripes. It's cool when they swarm and are all over the damn place. No idea what they're called though.
If you want to stop taking care of it you can leave it under a tree with some leaves on it (I don't know where you live but if you have a tree people won't use leafblowers/rakes on it can live there)
