Should I put this shit in my tank during cycling, /aq/?

I picked it up a little while ago. Assumed it was a chemical way of removing ammonia and nitrites and might come in handy. When I learned about cycling and how it's essentially about cultivating nitrifying bacteria by feeding it ammonia I thought it was stupid to strip the tank of all ammonia so haven't used it.

But now I've read the bottle it says it uses nitrifying bacteria to achieve its effects. So now I'm wondering if putting some of this in the water/on the live rock will help seed/boost nitrifying bacteria in my tank.

Sound useful or is it not going to make a difference?

Ammonia is only reducing marginally and nitrites not at all after about 11 days cycling.

I find that a freshly bought bottle of API quick start works best. I use KB's water conditioner and love it, but I've never tried their bacteria.

When you add it, make sure your room is pitch black, nitrifying bacteria is mostly photosensitive.

None of the bacteria in a bottle works
>>
>>2091455
Here is why none of it works.

>The fish shop that stored it stored it for lengthy periods in improper temperatures
>The delivery method for it to get to the fish shop used improper means for transit
>The warehouse before the fish shop and before delivery stored it for lengthy periods in even worse temperatures and conditions than the fish shop and delivery

They are a waste of money and I rage boils inside of me every time I hear someone suggest to someone new to shell out 10 to 20 dollars on it when they could put that money towards a good test kit.

>>
>>2091461
you forgot the part where you pour it into your tank and if any was alive it promptly starves to death for lack of ammonia.

then all that dead bacteria rots and produces a sudden spike of ammonia but now there's no bacteria to eat it.

They're doing fine. RCS are actually showing themselves around the tank foraging and are learning not to be skittish around the gouramis, since it's movement that activates their prey drive

Wish I could do something about my Amanos, they're fat shits and I have to overfeed the tank to make sure everyone has enough. Not getting those Hikari bottom feeder sinking wafers anymore, since they're small enough to be lugged away, my food has to be either smaller portions in higher quantities or too big for them to carry off. Next tank I'm getting with Amanos, I'm gonna get some bigger loaches that'll chomp their faces in half if they get too cocky

I keep seeing conflicting information on minimum tank size for a rainbow shark. Mine is in a 40 gallon, I was told at least 30 gallons and a few sites back me up, but a lot of people online are saying they need at least 50 gallons. So...is it going to be okay in my 40 gallon? I'm looking to upgrade to a 50+ eventually, but not in the near future. The shark is still young. I've provided many plants and some driftwood.

It's being outcompeted by another source, mainly diatoms which are an algae. Get a reputable snail that doesn't eat plants, a shrimp that doesn't kill it's tankmates, or a fish that eats algae.

I'm >>2091268 guy btw. I put fish food in to spike my ammonia before trying the filter aid.

I gave it a shot anyway. After 24 hours Ammonia has dropped very very marginally and nitrate not at all. I forgot to do the lights-off thing - if I try it again tonight I'll do it.

Any tips to try and help my cycling, /aq/? Also should I see any visual signs of nitrifying bacteria or is it all microscopic? Only growth I've seen so far is a diatom coating on the live rock but it looks like it's shrinking now.
>>
>>2091789
Add fish. Fuck fishless cycles. Cucks started that.
>>
>>2091794
Can anyone elaborate why Fishless > Fish-In cycle? Fish-In cycles seem to be much more faster.
>>
>>2091799
they take exactly the same amount of time.

people like to think that fish can suffer, and that having to deal with some ammonia or nitrite causes them to suffer.

neither idea is necessarily true.

fish used in cycling may die, and that costs money. So there is that.
>>
>>2091801
>they take exactly the same amount of time

>>
>>2091802
>Got any source to back that up?
it's a fact, there's no need to back it up.

if you're ignorant of this fact and find it simply unbelievable I recommend going on Wikipedia or some such and reading up on what cycling is and how it works.
>>
>>2091804

>>

They won't suffer if you keep up the slightly extra maintenance in that time frame

yes, assuming they're capable of suffering in the first place.

usually the fish survive the cycle without any obvious injury or stress even without any special care.

For the worse. To many cucks and inventions. I'll keep with my filter and heated slate bottom tank.
>>
>>2091859
I've been keeping fish since I was 12, so 32 years.

in that time cycling was discovered, marine salt mix was invented, canister filters became a thing, a huge number of new plants and fish have been brought to market, and we've learned to breed a ton of fish that were never bred in captivity before, including some saltwater fish with a planktonic stage.

other than that we've gotten better at keeping fish in general. Mostly because of water changes. When I was young nobody did water changes unless the tank crashed. We took pride in how long we could go without changing water. Years between water changes.

water changes have opened the hobby up for a lot more people and made it a billion times easier.

Things getting easier has also made people dumber though. It doesn't take any particular knowledge, experience or understanding to keep fish now. And most fish keepers lack all of those things.

the market has become cheaper and more widespread as well. Large chain fish stores existed when I was a kid, but they weren't everywhere like they are now. Fish cost more, and you got them from the lfs that would teach you all kinds of stuff about them. Equipment and supplies cost way more. The internet is breaking this down even more- now you can get pretty much any animal or thing you want shipped to your door for cheap. We can now buy creatures nobody had heard of 30 years ago.

overall the hobby is way more popular, cheaper, and better than it was when I got started.

everything I look up says they're a pest. I want to grow plants and shrimp in this tank. It's a 55gal. Don't really care about snails. I know snails are hermaphroditic and regardless I have two. Are the population explosions exaggerated or should I get rid of them?

Also, I have some pregnant Danios in my turtle tank, they've been pregnant a while. Should I isolate them in the planted or keep them where they are used to living.
>>
>>2091934
It's an internal filter with exposed media run through an air pump. The shrimp will pick food off the media and it can't kill shrimplets. You can get them for like less than 5 dollars on ebay.
>>
>>2091934
It can be its own filter. Some people swear by them. Somethings about the the bacteria getting lots of oxygen which is good. Most lfs use them as a cheap and very effective option.

I almost always end up with them and they really don't explode as long as you don't overfeed. I also think my shrimp eat a lot of the eggs but I can't confirm this.

Most of the methods to genocide them do more damage then the snails. Unless you want to keep puffers or loaches just pull them out when you see them and bait cucumbers occasionally.

Also assassin snails are an option if you don't have any snails you care about. They're slow workers but they can help curb the population and won't add much to the bioload or care requirements in a planted 55.

I have a moderately to densely planted 40B tank, and my two nerites leave all the healthy plants alone.

They will also rape your diatoms in a matter of days or a week, just make sure there's plenty of healthy biomass and your tank is well established so they can keep munching on dying leaves, mulm and detritus. Otherwise, you might have to supplement their feedings with veggies

/aq/ I'm trying to compile a list of 'no-care' plants
By 'no-care' I mean no special supplies or equipment need to keep them alive and growing, so no CO2 or fertilizers

From my limited experience I've been able to keep these plants alive and thriving without special assistance:

Hornwort (Ceratophyllum)
Anacharis (Egeria)
Marimo (Aegagropila)

I've been told Java Moss needs no special care but I've never been able to keep it alive when I tried it.

More no-care plants for the list would be appreciated.

Try 1 with the moss was a ball I bought from Petco which was wrapped with fishing line around a piece of foam to float. I immediately ripped the moss off this and set the pieces in a cholla wood log I had in the tank and left it alone. It died and never came back, I threw it out after about a week. Nothing catastrophic happened to the tank or water or other inhabitants in that time.

Try 2 was with some moss I bought off ebay. It arrived after 3 days, in the same dark unhealthy-looking spinach color state as the stuff I bought at Petco. I set it in the quarantine tank, kept light on it at day, and it turned brown too, no life after two weeks.

How do you mean, make the inside of the thing more interesting/realistic for the fish or just get a glass tank to make it easier to see them myself?

The fish themselves don't really seem to mind that the plastic sides aren't perfectly seethrough, it's not as opaque as the picture makes it look though, the flash seems to have emphasized the white of the plastic and the green of the water.

It's got a little filter system and an air stone.

Do I need more gravel and stones on the bottom, more plants etc? I'm not being funny, if you have advice i'm happy to take it on board but the box itself is fine in my opinion.

he just ate the eyes, he's pretty damn smart. Excellent vision too. Sometimes I sneak by the tank when he is on his dock so he doesn't swim at me for food. I don't want to interrupt if he needs light/heat.

In general, I am appalled at the conditions that most people keep turtles in. I know it can be expensive but if you pace yourself and look for deals it doesn't have to be. For example, I found a 4 ft T5 bulb fixture for $5 and a milli Q water purifier for $25 at the university surplus store. Bought the stand there for $50, and it is an industrial cabinet that could probably hold a 125g, hard black lab top and hardwood base with cabinets. 55gal tank was on sale for $45 at a pet store. Bought a canister "on sale" but that was probably my biggest purchase.

If I keep everyone fed it's a very happy tank. Bala's are comfortable enough around him to steal food in front of him then loudly munch on pellets like they're proud of it. I know that's how they eat but damn ,they just snag them out of his mouth
