Definitely not. They're not easy pets. You can't just put them in a hutch and feed them once a day like pet stores like to make you think. They need a lot of space (at least 2m2) and mental stimulation by toys as well as a partner. They hate being picked up and a good amount of them don't care for being pet.

tl;dr they're great pets, but they're a handful

When I was a kid I found an orphaned baby rabbit next to its mother that had been sadly killed by some predator. I took the baby home and took care of it until it could be released back into the wild.

It was a hare-raising experience.
>>
I found an abandoned pet rabbit yesterday, and I don't know what to do with it. I called around and almost places here say they dont take in rabbits with the exception of one which currently has like 30 rabbits already and very little space left. From the looks of it dropping him off there would mean he stays there for months. I might foster or hold him and see if any of my acquaintences who has rabbits wants another.

Any tips for what to do until i figure out what to do with him? I am really more of a bird person, so i don't know what to do. He has been eating spinach and drinking water, while staying in a borrowed cat carrier. In the morning I let him roam the house to get exercise, but I had to leave for work.

Halp.

Rabbits eat pinecones? Can they eat just any old pinecone, or does it have to be a specific type? The ones we have around here are the spiky kind, I shouldn't feed those to my bun, right?

As someone who's looking into doing the same thing, the most costly things would be the rabbits themselves and any medications they need. Of course fees will cost you quite a bit over time but if you get good rabbits than can effectively turn feed into gain you shouldn't have to worry too much. Just make sure you keep records on your bunnies so that you can look through them for when you're evaluating them to find breeding stock. Also, hutches, feeding equipment and such are generally one time fees.
I wouldn't recommend wire hutches because of sore feet, but they're easier to sterilize. If you want to have metal you can do that by breeding buns with alot of fluff on their feet or giving them something to stand on, like a mat or something. I've heard rabbits costing as much as $40 a bun, but I'm assuming the price would be determined by the one selling. In all, yes it isn't the most expensive animal to raise, just make sure you know exactly what you're doing.

>>

they are free roamers so they have a basement and of course a hell ton of cages, i own 8, so they each have their own private cage if they want peace from the others, love my buns <3
>>
Im researching about pet rabbits, and I have a question. Can you just let them roam around the house? Can they be potty trained? Id really like to have one, but I need to make sure they're right for me.
>>
>>2091672
>Can you just let them roam around the house?
If there are no cables or stuff you mind getting chewed on openly lying around, yes.

>Can they be potty trained?
yes

>Id really like to have one,
You need to have at least two.
>>
>>2091675
Out of curiosity, why should I have two? Do the genders matter?
>>
>>2091679
Because bunnies are very social animals and humans do not serve as a substitute for a bun partner. If you keep two together you'll realize how much they cuddle, clean and play with each other.

A male + female (with at least the male being neutered) usually works best.
>>
>>2091672
>Can you just let them roam around the house?
Yes, you just need to secure the place for wires and make sure you don't mind that they can chew in stuff, mostly when the rabbit are young.
>Can they be potty trained?
Yes, it's easier if the bunny are neutered but you can potty train it very easily anyhow. because it's a clean animal naturally
>why should I have two?
Because bunnies are social animals that loves company by their own kind and you'll have a much happier bunny if you keep two instead of one. You also need to activate your bunny very much if you only have one.
>Do the genders matter?
Yes and no, it depends on the bunny.
It's often easier to put a female and male together because naturally they want to make babies. So if you want to keep different genders you'll have to get them neutered because they literally fuck like rabbits.
Females have a very strong territorial feeling so keeping two females can also be difficult if they aren't neutered, unless you have a ton of space and give them private spaces where the other bunny isn't allowed to be.
and keeping two males together are just plain dangerous if they aren't neutered because in the nature they castrate each other to keep competition down and they easily fight.

>Id really like to have one, but I need to make sure they're right for me
stuff you need to know!
>bunnies are expensive if you want to hold them right
>They get fat easily so you can't feed them only with bunny pellets
>bunny pellets should not contain corn
>they need at least three different veggies everyday
>at least two of them should be of the right kind , which means the veggie makes the bunny chew right
>a bunny can chew in two ways. up down, which doesn't do anything for the bunny and they can chew sideways. which makes the bunny grind teeth and in that way it's teeth doesn't get to long.
>some right veggies are carrots, but a carrot to a bunny is like you eating a cream cake so you can't feed them carrots too much
>>
>>2091705
>good veggies for your bunnies teeth
Broccoli
Selleri
Spinach (only given in small amounts)
Carrots (only given in small amounts)
Kale (only given in small amounts)
and you have to remember always have an unlimited amount of fresh hay for your bunny
>>
>>2091705
>>2091709
I myself own 8 bunnies, and they cost me about 375 dollars a month.
so i use about 47 dollars on each bunny a month.
so about 94 dollars on two bunnies
i'm not saying you should do the same but i would recommend you use somewhere near that (if not more) to make sure your bunnies are happy

Maybe it's too fat to be able to reach his butt for eating its poop. It sounds like you might still be feeding your bun too many pallets.
>>2091672
Most important thing is to not keep rabbits alone. Besides that, off the top of my head:
>they need a lot of space, at least 2m2
>bun teeth continue to grow their whole lives, so your buns will need wood to chew on. willow and apple are good choices, the fresher the better. some types of wood are poisonous so it's best to do plenty of research
>after 24 hours of not eating, a bun dies. pay close attention to your buns every day. if they don't eat at feeding time, try giving them a snack. if they refuse the snack as well, immediately call a vet.
>buns can't handle sudden temperature shifts. they are also bad with heat and can die of heatstroke at temperatures higher than 27 degrees celsius. if you want keep your buns outside, make sure to get them in the house on hot days.
>buns have a weak constitution, as you might've noticed. make sure to have some savings for potential vet bills. i own two buns and have spent 1000+ euros on vet bills over the span of 2,5 years.
>buns are very curious and smart and need lots of toys. look around the web for suitable options.
>>2089442

>>2091721

I think most on /an/ can agree with you that people buying pets because of their cuteness and just throwing them out because they lack brain and emotions, they deserve to be treated badly..!

Something has been bugging me for several years, maybe you guys can help out. When I was younger, my sister and my cousin bought two rabbits from a guy who worked on a farm. Both female, both from the same breed. They were still young when they got them, but I can't really pinpoint the exact age.

Anyways, about a month pasts and one of the two got sick. The vet said it had some flesh eating disease and they had to put it down. Up until that point, the two rabbits were pretty much together all the time. I was wondering, was the disease a natural thing or was it somehow caused by poor care? I wish I could give more details but hopefully you guys know what happened.
>>
>>2093195
Well it depends on what kind of skin problems, some bunnies have a higher chance of getting skin infections than others, i've though never heard a bunny that needed to be put down because of a skin infection. Normally it can be treated easily. But it could come from poor care, like not cleaning enough in the cage or overweight. Hope it helped :)

Hey there, fellow /bun/ lovers, new owner with a few quick questions.

Are there any suggestions for bedding? When I purchased this rabbit from craigslist, the previous owner gave me a huge bag of dust free pine bedding, but I read conflicting things about pine and rabbits.

This is the bedding she currently has:

http://www.amazon.com/Sun-Seed-Company-Pine-Press-Cubic/dp/B0002ASMLC

The last owner was also using the bedding in the litter pan, and not covering the full cage with bedding, so I'm looking to change that with "Yesterday's News" and some hay placed on top in the litter pan, like I read online, unless that's not a good idea.

And the other question I have is in relation to her ears. She is supposed to be a "mini lop", but only one of her ears will droop. The other is pulled back like a comb over kind of deal, where its straight back, not even standing up, and almost like its attached to her more traditional lop ear. Is that normal? I mean, for a so-called mini lop, she's huge for a 4-5 month old rabbit, at least as far as I can tell, so guessing some bad breeding or something involved?
>>
>>2095592
>bad breeding

a non "mini" breed was advertised as "mini" to make people interested.

Sounds like the case, since the mom that I bought the rabbit from was amazed at how big she is.

Here she is facing forward, to give an idea of that ear that I was talking about. The right ear droops like it is supposed to, but the right ear is tilted far back, and doesn't seem to move at all, no matter how she changes head position.
>>
>>2092463
Teasers/trailers really don't do it justice. I thought it was stupid when I saw that first teaser but then it ended up being one of my favorite movies. The characters, their chemistry, and the themes of prejudice are really done well, I didn't expect that. Good movie for animal lovers, too, since its world is so fleshed out and interesting.
>>
>>2095592
Don't forget you should never keep a bun alone.
>>
>>2087592
But have to keep in mind that is not case with all rabbits. Their teeth and nails/kicks can really hurt and scare a child, child can also be way too rough to rabbit.
Rabbits are not pets for children.
>>
>>2095592
>>2095614
As a kid I bought what was advertised as a 'dwarf lop'. He looked a lot like one.

When he died he was the size of a fat housecat, and still wasn't fully grown. So yeah, always be suspicious if it's not from an actual dwarf breeder and you can see the parents.

IMHO rabbits I hunt can get gamey if not prepared right, tame meat rabbits always seem a bit greasy.

It really depends! A well cared for rabbit can live 10+ years on average so I would say you don't have to worry too much until they're around 6 ish!

Sup /bun/

Almost 3 years ago my best bunny buddy died. I still miss him.

We'd love to get some new rabbits and have seen an adorable pair for sale (mini lop/lionhead cross) ready for collection in 4 weeks - plenty of time for bunnyproofing.

Of course they'd have to be houserabbits, but the house we live in is a 3 story townhouse with only a kitchen on the ground floor. The old house we lived in was a normal house and the buns had free reign on the ground floor.

Also we have a 3 year old son, who likes doing toddler things such as riding bikes round the house and spinning round til he falls.

I really want buns again but my head is telling me to wait until the boy is a bit older and that the house layout is less than ideal.

Thoughts?
>>
>>2097405
Unless you could guarantee that the toddler only interacts with the bunnies under your supervision, waiting is better.
>>

why don't more people eat wild rabbits?
They're a serious pest of farmland, taste pretty good, eat only forage rather than grains, produce a fairly high grade nutritious meat, very cost effective compared to poultry

Looking for advice on how to prevent my rabbit from chewing cables. I've secured my bedroom to almost perfection, but there are a few loose cables that I could not effectively hide, and my rabbit will run right up to this specific cable and chew on it, no matter how many times I stop her, to the point that I think I'm being trolled by a ball of fluff.

Is there some kind of smell I can apply to keep her away from things I do not want chewed? She's destroyed a live router adapter, as well as a live Wii U charger, so I'm afraid that she might experience that cat scene from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation with biting a live wire, and becoming extra crispy as a result.

Because they provide no nutritional value. I mean I don't know where you get this idea that they provide nutritious meats. Wildlife basics pretty much tell you if you are living off the land that you cannot eat only wild rabbit because you will starve to death from malnutrition.

And at that point if you are farming these buns for meat, they aren't really wild then are they?

Today she has a house visit with a possible adoptive family. Fingers crosssssed.

You're badly misunderstanding what rabbit starvation is. It's true you cannot live *only* on rabbit, but the same applies to any lean game and it's not because it has no nutritional value at all, it's because it is deficient in one area - dietary fat. Rabbit is a good lean protein source as part of a normal diet, it just shouldn't be your only food source. The same applies to lots of healthy food sources, but it doesn't mean kale has no nutritional value because you'll eventually suffer malnutrition on a 100% kale diet.

And when people do suffer rabbit starvation, it tends to be during a famine or extreme survival situation when the last available food source is extremely lean wild game - even in that situation, eating rabbit is better than eating nothing at all.

Does anybody here have two male buns bonded? I bought a bun last year not knowing they did better with friends, was told he was a girl so while he was at the vet getting fixed bought a baby boy bun, and then found out he was a boy. So I have two male buns. They are both neutered now and under a year old. Can I bond them?

I'm thinking about getting rabbits... any of you who has, please confirm or deny these few points:

1) They make tunnels under the ground and can escape.

2) If they escape they run much faster than you

3) They can have easy heart attacks when they are cornered or scared

4) Their pee/poo can smell strongly.

5) If I feed them the kitchen scraps or stale bread it's a matter of days until they turn belly up

6) They bite down every plant in the garden (even if they don't eat them) and even bite around the bark of shrubs/trees
>>
>>2107569
1) i dont really know, my bunny lives indoors, but they usually tend to do their nest for babies, maybe you should secure the area your rabbit will be

2) they run faster than you when they're escaping, yeah

3) yes, they're prey animals and get easy scared and when they're terribly scared they could have an heart attack, or they start to yell if they're in pain

4) yes, but be sure to clean everyday and you can use vinager for the hard smell, search in youtube for more bunnyhacks

5) you can give them a little of bread o some food they dont usually eat and it's not proccesed, but a little, just for them to try, but it's not recommended, and dont overdoit, they have their special diet, so just give them vegetables and bunnyfoods, and soda cookie or a corner of bread as a treat , not costantly

6) they don't going to chew a plant who dont going to eat, or maybe they were planing to eat the plant but got bored and left it there, yes they could chew trees/wood, and it's good for their teehts, their teehts grow everyday and they must chew wood toys or real wood to get heir teehts controled

sorry if my english sucks
i hope this can help you

Yo, pet-noob anon here. And I have heard so much about rabbits being awful little fuckers. Being gross or hard to care for or biting the shit out of their owners and all this nasty, nasty shit.
But they're cute as hell and as this thread can attest, people love their buns. So my question for y'all buncha experts is what's the truth? Are they evil little fluffballs, and if not, why do you love your buns?
>>

My bun usually hangs out in my living room. Sometimes I use the tv to play videogames or watch something and while I tend to keep the volume at a reasonable level the bunny prefers to go and lay down at a distance from the living room (but sometimes she returns and gets comfortable behind me or when she wants me to groom her).

I want to ask if there is a good source material or from your experiences how sensible are rabbits to constant sound and volume (such as from a tv, or music).

I have a problem with it because it bothers my gf a lot, she says that the bunny is scared of the sounds from the tv but I kinda doubt it since the bunny just takes some distance and keeps chilling in the dinning room or kitchen (all withing our range of vision).
>>
>>2108717
My bunny loves everyone. If you pet him, he'll sometimes fall asleep under your hand. He's good with kids and other animals, too. I've never had a mean bun, but I have had some when I was a kid that were apathetic to people.

Cats and dogs can turn into assholes if their owners don't know how to care for them.

Like if youre picking up your bun too often or handling it badly and freaking it out, its gonna flip out and not want your hands near it, and probably bite you or hop away.

If you annoy something, it gets mad.
>>
>>2110218
Only if you're lucky. Usually they end up fighting.

I'm told they have an oddly quick temper. Its one of the reasons I've never had one, moody people and animals give me anxiety.

Thats not much of an answer. There's plenty of animals that aren't predators.

>>2102535

They aren't kosher, as they are coprophagous, as ancient cultures sometimes regarded such creatures as unclean when they didn't understand germs. Because they are plentiful, they may also be considered a poor persons food. The taste can be a bit strong for some.

Rabbits as livestock dont have many protections; its nearly as bad as chickens.

Our zoo had an embarrassing series of incidents with kangaroos, wallabys and rabbits. Apparently as kids were walking through the open habitat, the kangaroos would find rabbit nests and gore the baby bunnies somehow. No idea why. It was a little hard on the kids, and it happened at least twice.
