I raised a clutch once from about 30 or so eggs that a frenzied Polyphemus moth had sprayed all over a kitchen. At each instar they were pretty in a different way, but they eventually turn into fat blobs the few molts before pupating.
In the end only 6 or 8 made it to cocoon stage, and after a year they hatched. Polyphemus moths are basically mice with wings as adults. Definitely closer to birds than moths. The caterpillars were more fun to handle, but they gave some folks a rash.
