So my Shi Tzu bud is 14 now and I've been feeding him nice sliced ham/turkey etc. instead of dog food. I figure he's pretty old now so what the hell. Is this a good idea or does their body agree more with designated "dog food"? I haven't noticed him getting sick or anything.
you're going to end up giving it a heart disease like that.

no-go then, alright.
>I haven't noticed him getting sick or anything
do you really think heart disease or cancer is easily visible?
>he's lived to a healthy old age on one type of food
>why don't i change his diet
brilliant

This anon nails it. Maybe give it to him as a treat if it doesn't upset his tum, but he has clearly been doing great on the previous food.
I'm all for ditching processed commercial food, but if you're going to switch to a whole food diet you need the help of a licensed nutritionist to ensure your dog is getting almost he right nutrients. Unfortunately nutritional deficiencies can take a long time to appear, and a dog can appear healthy for a time while internally they body is stripping bones and tissues of the nutrients not present in the diet. That's why shitty foods like Beneful can stay on the market, because when nutritional deficiencies eventually show up after several years they are often misattributed to "old age".
