I am learning how to start a small garden and plan on building several beds. I am planning on rotating crops. I know that I should not grow the same family of crops in two consecutive years. However, is it still ok to grow different kinds of crops in the same family in the same year? For example, is it ok to grow radishes and then broccoli in succession in the same year?

it's better to not have related crops on the same plot in consecutive years. Pests often target the whole family. Plant curcubits next year, and one of the nightshades the year after. That gives you a good enough rotation that your pest species can't get well established.

Also look into raised beds or straw bale gardening as another way of keeping pests in check.

Hate to be that assailed but in my experience polycultures mitigate pest problems.

Though coming from arural background I've come to find if say for example cover crop brassicas are being grown within a couple miles of you no amount of rotating will deter brassica pests.
