My sister picked up a baby opossum in the middle of the road last summer.
She kept him in a cage outside with the door open, so it could come and go as it pleased. Once it got big enough, it wandered off.

when i was studying in istanbul there were tons of street cats everywhere but they were hardly a problem at all. people took care of them (think the government or a charity has an innoculation program) and they were generally pretty friendly as far as strays go. istanbul is a clean city in general so there wasn't a huge problem with waste either

Especially here in the south, there's this irrational hatred towards them like they're this malicious, evil monster. They're just animals, dude. Doing what animals do. And for the most part, they really don't bother anyone, and they stay out of people's way.

I hate my neighbor, and his multiple cats are always outside my house, but they are scared of everyone but him so I can't even pet them.
And I love watching birds, even the noisy ones don't bother me. Scrub Jays are loud as shit...
Fucking drain flies. I worked at a wastewater plant with an infestation of those damn things. Mostly I hate them for the completel lack fo self-preservation, they will fly right into your eyes, nose, mouth, and ears constantly (it's worse in the ears because they flutter around and die slowly).

I think people who let their cats roam are being a bit irresponsible, but I also think the anti-outdoor cat people are generally pretty extremist. For a lot of them it has little to do with their actual experiences and is more of a political belief or even religion. It's just another strain of ardent environmentalism.
I mean they talk about sound birds and biodiversity... biodiversity in WHAT environment though? The biodivisity in a suburb at least 50 miles from the nearest area that could loosely be considered "wilderness"?
I can understand it better in a place like Australia or Hawaii, but in most other places the concern about song birds is pure bull shit.
